Community Based Aids Programme<br />

(COBAP) / Kampala, Uganda. Provides<br />

sports activities, healthcare and education<br />

in a large slum area where HIV/AIDS is<br />

rife. Social Issues: Health and education;<br />

reduction of juvenile delinquency.<br />

Courir pour la Vie / Morocco. In order<br />

to fulfil its mission of ‘developing girls’<br />

rights in rural Morocco’, the project<br />

seeks to increase the confidence and<br />

independence of girls through sporting<br />

activities and workshops and to promote<br />

a change in socially acceptable roles <strong>for</strong><br />

females in Moroccan society.<br />

Mathare Youth <strong>Sport</strong>s Association<br />

(MYSA) / Nairobi, Kenya. Football<br />

league of over 1 000 teams where<br />

youngsters are encouraged to improve<br />

their health and wellbeing, thus raising<br />

their self-esteem. Was nominated <strong>for</strong> the<br />

Nobel Peace Prize in 2003 and 2004. Social<br />

Issues: Self-esteem; education; health and<br />

environmental awareness.<br />

Right to Play <strong>Sport</strong>Works Project /<br />

Idrimi and Milé refugee camps, Chad.<br />

Provides regular structured sport and play<br />

activities to contribute to the normalisation<br />

process <strong>for</strong> children and youth while they<br />

are living in refugee camps. Social Issues:<br />

Self-esteem; community building; capacity<br />

building and inclusion.<br />

ASIA<br />

Magic Bus / Mumbai, India. Creates<br />

‘classrooms without walls’ offering sports<br />

activities, education, food and healthcare.<br />

Social Issues: Health awareness; crime<br />

prevention; gender equality; counteracting<br />

negative peer pressure; malnutrition.<br />

Operation Breakthrough / Hong Kong.<br />

Operates in partnership with the Hong<br />

Kong Police and the Hong Kong Rugby<br />

Football Union to help fight crime and<br />

juvenile delinquency amongst low-income<br />

and immigrant communities. Social Issues:<br />

Rehabilitation of youth offenders; crime<br />

Sri Lanka. Aims to address the lack<br />

of opportunity in rural areas, increase<br />

Special Olympics Unified <strong>Sport</strong>s<br />

Programme / China. Breaks down social<br />

barriers by bringing together youngsters<br />

with and without mental disabilities to play<br />

promotion of physical health.<br />

Spirit of Soccer / Cambodia. Through<br />

an innovative method using football<br />

and games, boys and girls learn about<br />

the dangers of mines and unexploded<br />

ordinances as well as their identification.<br />

Sucheta Kriplani Shiksha Niketan<br />

(SKSN) / Rajasthan, India. School<br />

<strong>for</strong> the disabled, including polio victims,<br />

who take part in sport with able-bodied<br />

children, helping to break down community<br />

prejudices. Social Issues: Breaking down<br />

social taboos on disabled individuals;<br />

gender equality; empowerment.<br />

EUROPE<br />

Fight <strong>for</strong> Peace / London, United<br />

Kingdom. Based on Luta pela Paz (Fight<br />

<strong>for</strong> Peace) in Rio de Janeiro, the project<br />

uses boxing to provide alternatives to<br />

crime and violence <strong>for</strong> youth from deprived<br />

estates in East London.<br />

It’s A Goal! / Manchester, United<br />

Kingdom. Combats depression by<br />

encouraging young people to attend<br />

discussions using sport as a metaphor<br />

in a local football club. Social Issues:<br />

Depression; social exclusion; potential<br />

suicide.<br />

Youth <strong>Sport</strong> Foyle / Donegal,<br />

Northern Ireland. Cross-border peace<br />

initiative that brings together communities<br />

in multisport activities to create an<br />

environment in which every young<br />

person can participate irrespective of<br />

race, religion, ability, gender or economic<br />

circumstance. Social Issues: Tolerance;<br />

integration; cultural exchange; peace<br />

building; community regeneration.<br />

MIDDLE EAST<br />

Peres Center <strong>for</strong> Peace / Israel<br />

& Palestine. The Twinned Peace<br />

Basketball programme promotes sports<br />

cooperation between Palestinian and Israeli<br />

communities. Social Issues: Peace-building;<br />

discrimination; stereotyping; negative<br />

perception of ‘the other side’; intergroup<br />

conflict resolution.<br />

OCEANIA<br />

Indigenous <strong>Sport</strong>s Gold Programme<br />

/ Australia. An activities programme<br />

targeting young indigenous people as an<br />

aid to discouraging antisocial and criminal<br />

behaviours as well as developing and<br />

sustaining community cohesiveness.Social<br />

Issues: Inclusion; increasing employment<br />

opportunities; reduction of crime and anti-<br />

social behaviour.<br />

SOUTH AMERICA<br />

IT Crossover Programme / Grenada,<br />

West Indies. Provides basketball and IT<br />

courses to help in the rebuilding of the<br />

community following the devastation of<br />

Hurricane Ivan. Social Issues: Community<br />

and capacity building; reduction of<br />

poverty, delinquency and drug abuse.<br />

Luta Pela Paz (Fight <strong>for</strong> Peace) / Rio<br />

de Janeiro, Brazil. Based in Maré, an area<br />

of Rio de Janeiro plagued by drug gang<br />

wars, the project uses boxing as a tool to<br />

provide alternatives to crime. Social Issues:<br />

Reduce crime, drug trafficking and armed<br />

violence; education; unemployment.<br />

Meninos do Morumbi / Sao Paulo,<br />

Brazil. This project provides an afterschool<br />

learning centre offering music and<br />

sport activities. They believe the social,<br />

cognitive, and competitive characteristics<br />

present in sports have a positive effect on<br />

children, their families and the community.<br />

Social Issues: Reduction of violent conflict,<br />

crime, drug abuse, teenage pregnancy,<br />

gangsterism, family abuse, HIV/AIDS.<br />

<strong>Sport</strong>s in Underdeveloped Areas /<br />

Canelones, Uruguay. The Gonzalo<br />

Rodriguez <strong>Foundation</strong> implements a<br />

project to reduce school absenteeism,<br />

delinquency and drug abuse in<br />

underdeveloped areas. Social Issues:<br />

Integral education; gender equality;<br />

Lamadrid, Argentina. This communitybased<br />

initiative in the province of Buenos<br />

Aires uses sports as well a traditional<br />

Argentine dance, the murga, to rein<strong>for</strong>ce<br />

the importance of education, community,<br />

and values.<br />

Unión y Amistad de San Isidro (San<br />

Isidro Development Project) / Buenos<br />

Aires. <strong>Sport</strong>s activity sessions and<br />

educational workshops in an area where<br />

crime, drugs, alcohol, violence and the use<br />

of firearms are prevalent. Social Issues:<br />

Reduce youth delinquency and substance<br />

abuse; self-esteem; education; health<br />

awareness.<br />

FRANCE<br />

Bout de Vie / Corsica. While providing<br />

outdoor physical activity, this programme<br />

creates an environment in which the young<br />

handicapped people can integrate, adapt<br />

and overcome their disabilities. Social<br />

Golf Educatif / Paris. This project<br />

adapts the game of golf <strong>for</strong> suburban<br />

living and uses it as a tool to fight social<br />

exclusion and reduce antisocial behaviour<br />

and drug abuse among young people who<br />

live on low-income estates. Social Issues:<br />

Integration; motivation; prevention of drug<br />

abuse; increasing opportunities.<br />

<strong>Sport</strong> dans la Ville / Lyon. Uses sport<br />

as a means to encourage young people to<br />

avoid antisocial behaviour, teaching them<br />

the importance of teamwork, leadership,<br />

social integration and racial tolerance.
