THE MISSION OF LAUREUS
Laureus is a global movement harnessing the universal
power of sport to bring people together as a force for
good. The combined elements of Laureus present a
unique entity that supports and showcases the work of
the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation.
The Laureus World Sports Academy is an unprecedented
collection of the world’s legendary athletes. They select
the winners of the Laureus World Sports Awards and act
as global ambassadors for the Laureus Sport for Good
Foundation, volunteering their time to visit projects in
order to draw attention to the problems afflicting society.
The members of the Academy share a belief in the power
of sport to break down barriers, to bring people together
and improve their lives.
The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation is an innovative
charitable initiative that uses the positive influence of
sport to tackle society’s most pressing challenges around
the globe, supporting projects on five continents.
The vision of the Foundation, as defined by Laureus
Patron Nelson Mandela, is ‘Sport has the power to
change the world.’
Its mission is to use the power of sport to address
social challenges through the support of sports-related
community development initiatives, using sport as a tool
for social change.
Projects worldwide have improved the lives of over
750 000 children through the support of the Global
Foundation and a growing network of eight subsidiary
foundations in Argentina, France, Germany, Italy, South
Africa, Spain, Switzerland and the United States.

The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation is supported
by Founding Patrons Daimler and Richemont, and
their designated Founding Partners brands Mercedes-
Benz and IWC Schaffhausen who provide funding and

The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation is championed
by a growing number of Laureus Friends & Ambassadors
around the globe who have joined the members of the
Academy as ambassadors and spokespeople of the
Foundation’s work.
The Laureus World Sports Awards is the premier
global sports awards honouring the greatest sportsmen
and women across all sports each year. The Awards is
a platform to showcase and generate support for the
Foundation’s social programmes and the work of the
Academy. The winners are selected by the ultimate
sports jury – the 43 members of the Academy, the
living legends of sport honouring the greatest athletes
of today. Each year the Laureus Sport for Good Award
is presented to an individual (or group) who have used
the fundamental beliefs that underscore the Laureus
Sport for Good Foundation as the inspiration for their
work and have made an outstanding contribution to
society through the medium of sport and in so doing
have made a difference to the lives of young people in
local communities.
