Why postgrad?
—
The Postgraduate Edge
Postgraduate study has broad purpose and appeal –
and Falmouth offers the support, expertise, facilities and
community to make your dreams and aspirations a reality.
— Are you a recent graduate wanting
to gain specialised skills and further
your knowledge base?
— Has your career lost momentum
and you need to extend your practice
and explore new themes, skill sets
and ways of working?
— Do you dream of a new career
entirely but don’t know where
to start?
— Would you like to learn more about
a subject that has always interested
you but you’ve never had time to
pursue it?
Whatever your motivation,
postgraduate study gives you the
opportunity to immerse yourself in
your chosen specialism, enabling
you to develop a wide range of skills
and enjoy new experiences while
at the same time significantly
increasing your earning potential.
MA or PhD?
An MA will provide you with technical
skills and insight for a chosen field for
your future career. A PhD allows you to
undertake in-depth research into an area
of specific interest, developing and using
a specific methodology to generate new
knowledge in the field, and you’ll graduate
as a research professional. Whichever
you choose, Falmouth will provide you
with the training, support and guidance
to pursue your selected profession.
Falmouth offers:
— An inspiring environment for your
studies, combining the beautiful
and relaxing Cornish landscape
with cutting-edge facilities
— A diverse range of national and
international partnerships and
creative networks
— Enviable industry connections and
a stimulating, lively, research-active
community that nurtures innovation,
collaboration and enterprise
—
UCF has a phenomenal reputation for producing
journalists who reach the highest level of their field.
Before I arrived, I had met several graduates who
were working in newsrooms, so I knew it would
be the right place to study.
Professional expertise
Our staff have years of professional
experience, with many of them still
active practitioners in their fields, and
are always there to offer support and
direction, helping you to both develop
new ways of working and to build on
your existing skill set. You’ll also gain
inspiration from the many visiting
professionals and their diverse range
of lectures and workshops.

Without the Professional
Writing MA I wouldn’t
be where I am today. The
tutors steered me towards
working in non-fiction and
convinced me I could write
comically (something I had
never tried before). Within
two years of leaving
Falmouth I was offered a
book deal with Random
my second book.
Our modes of study
—
Flexible Learning
Studying for a Master’s or PhD doesn’t have to
mean a complete change of lifestyle. We understand
that work and family commitments are important
considerations when contemplating postgraduate
study, so have devised a range of forward-thinking
initiatives that allow you to blend your existing
career or family life with your desire to study.
University College Falmouth aims
to provide a variety of options for
those who cannot undertake full-
time postgraduate study. We offer
part-time courses that fit flexibly
into your life and a pioneering
online learning approach.
The University College offers
the following courses on a part-
time basis:
— MA Art & Environment
— MA Fine Art: Contemporary
Practice
— MA Illustration: Authorial Practice
— MA Performance Writing
— MA Professional Writing
Our MPhil/PhD programme is
available full-time (normally
completed within two to four years)
and part-time (normally completed
within three to eight years). We also
offer a PhD by publication in one year
for applicants with appropriate
experience.
Our Continuing Professional
Development courses (p44) are also
designed to fit in around full-time work.
MA Professional Writing:
Online learning
Run over a two-year period,
this part-time course has been
developed in response to a high
demand from would-be students
who couldn’t commit to a full-time
version because of geographical,
work, financial or family commitments.
“The online version of the MA is just
as challenging, and uses the same
successful approach to developing
skills,” says lecturer, Susannah
Marriott. “We’ve been astounded
at the rapid speed at which our
diverse online students cultivate
the writing, collaborative and
professional skills vital for a career
in writing. Over 50% of the first cohort
graduated with distinctions.”
The course has been carefully
designed to ensure that students
studying from home develop their
skills as part of a tight-knit learning
community, working alone and
collaboratively within a state-ofthe-art
virtual learning environment,
which is packed with multimedia
learning resources and a variety
of ways to interact with both tutors
and peers.
Short courses in Professional
Media Practice
Our Professional Media Practice
short courses are designed by industry
for industry. Flexible, practical and
forward-looking, these courses offer
creative stimulation and hands-on
skills development. The courses
involve one weekend ‘residential’ in
Falmouth, followed by eight weeks’
online learning, so participants can
work around existing commitments,
embedding new learning into current
business activities. Please see p44
for more information.
openSpace: technology for
online learning
Falmouth has been quick to embrace
the potential of studying and teaching
online, and is developing new and
exciting ways to deliver its flexible
learning programmes.
Pioneered by the MA Professional
Writing team, openSpace is a platform
for making teaching materials free

to learners and academics all over
the world as Open Education Resources.
“We know there are lots of people
who think they would like to pursue
education of some kind, but feel
alienated from higher education for
one reason or another,” says Christina
Bunce, who led the pilot scheme to
develop Falmouth’s Open Education
Resources. “New technologies
combined with our confidence in our
subject expertise and teaching model
means we can now offer greater
study options to a greater variety
of learners than ever before – not
just complete degrees, but bitesized
tasters, try-before-you-buy
options and Continuing Professional
Development courses for businesses
as well as individuals.”
openSpace currently offers
taster sessions in a variety of writing
forms, as well as a full Master’s-level
screenwriting unit and a Master’s-level
unit on Intellectual Property Rights.
the learning Space
The Learning Space is our virtual
learning environment, which offers
24-hour access to course materials,
podcasts and video lectures, as
well as live online chat, text and
email facilities. It gives you access
to learning resources and other
information outside of the normal
academic day, enabling you to plan
your learning more flexibly – crucial
if you’re juggling work and other
commitments with your study.
“I could be in classes in the day, go
out and film in the evening and then
still check the learning Space after –
in my case, sometimes at 1am in
the morning,” says MA Television
Production student, Sharon Robins.
—
I’m a project manager working in food retail but have
always wanted to write full-time. I live in London
but the University College’s location wasn’t an issue
because of its online delivery. We had regular online
chat-room meetings and had to critique our fellow
students each week so there was plenty of interaction
both with tutors and other students. Lectures were
delivered as podcasts and that worked very well, as
you could download and refer to them as you went
through the course.
Alex Higlett / MA Illustration: Authorial Practice
In the competitive world of illustration, combining
your creative talents with a professional approach
is of paramount importance when it comes to
securing commissions. Alex Higlett took full
advantage of the opportunities available during
her time as an MA Illustration student at Falmouth
and is now reaping the rewards.
www.falmouth.ac.uk/illustrationma
“I did a degree in Illustration and then
worked for three years in a number
of part-time jobs as well as doing the
odd illustration commission.
I was persevering with my illustration
work, but couldn’t find an agent. I was
also working on collaborative projects,
doing lots of freebies and putting on
exhibitions, but I felt like I didn’t really
have much direction.
I decided to do the Master’s at
Falmouth to try and rectify this.
The course was really well suited
to what I wanted and needed. There
seemed to be a particular emphasis
on looking at the relationship between
words and images, and on narrative
and sequential illustration. Since
my work was nearly always about
storytelling, I thought the course
would be really beneficial for me.
the career opportunities you hear
about and get through being a student
at Falmouth were really great.
We did a book with the Brighton Stanza
of the Poetry Society, the course runs
a graphic literature competition and
publishes a student each year, and
there are lots of other competitions
and professional opportunities. I came
joint first at the Cheltenham Illustration
Awards, and as a direct result have
illustrated a book for Walker Books.
the course has given me lots of skills
that helped me to work independently
and professionally. The emphasis on
research, practice and reflection has
remained an important part of the way
I work, and I think this has positively
influenced my professional practice.
the course was definitely a sound
investment. It has improved my work,
helping me to understand and engage
with it in a deeper way, and building
a skill set which has been invaluable
to me since completing the course.”
A graduate of Falmouth’s MA
Professional Writing degree, Sarah is
now a film and entertainment journalist
with four published books already to
“I’d just finished an english degree at
Manchester Metropolitan university
and wanted to do a Master’s. I’d
recently won a scriptwriting award
in my local area and it had made me
want to become a scriptwriter. After
pondering about becoming a primary
school teacher, I decided that I wanted
to try and become a writer first.
the course at Falmouth was all about
making a living from writing. There
was scriptwriting, writing for business,
writing novels/creative non-fiction,
writing features... It’s the only course
of its kind in the country and I was on
cloud nine when I was told that I’d got in.
From day one the course encourages
you to be professional. Meeting
deadlines is so important on the course
and this is what I’ve carried forward.
I always try to finish my books a week
or two before the deadline now.
Four months after graduating I was
appointed editorial assistant of a
celebrity news website.
I was told that it was my Master’s that
got me the job. Less than a year later
I was promoted to editor and now I go to
all the latest film premieres and press
conferences. It’s unbelievable and all
down to the course.
I decided to write a biography of
twilight star Robert Pattinson.
Christina, the course leader, helped
me secure an agent and within a month
I had a book deal. The last six months
have flown by and I’ve written four
books, which are about to come out
in America. I love the buzz of walking
into Waterstone’s or Asda and seeing
my books on the shelves.
I can’t stress enough how the course
has changed my life. I’m a journalist and
an author now and that’s all I ever really
wanted to be. My MA course was the
best investment I’ve ever made, and
I’ll be forever telling people who want
to write to apply for the course.”

Nina Saada
MA International Journalism
After her BA in Broadcasting and
freelancing in local radio for a year,
Nina Saada was looking to break
into international news.
www.falmouth.ac.uk/
internationaljournalism
Her MA in International Journalism
not only enabled her to shoot an
award-winning documentary in
Uganda, but also paved the way for
her job as assistant news editor on
the International Desk at NBC News.
“Falmouth has a fantastic reputation
for journalism and is very well
respected in the industry. Every
newsroom I have ever been in has
had at least one Falmouth graduate.
Studying at Falmouth was the
springboard for my career in
international news. The course
was very vocational and hands-on
and we were encouraged to stand
on our own two feet and behave as
industry professionals from day one.
One of the best parts of the course
was the three-week internship that
we were required to complete. I spent
mine at NBC News in London and am
now employed there as an assistant
news editor on the International Desk.
My MA project took me to uganda
where I produced my documentary
Sacrificed, which not only secured
my Distinction but also won me the
prestigious bJtC award, along with
respect and credibility among employers
and other industry professionals.
The project was the best thing that
I have ever done and I’m still reaping
the benefits over a year on.
everything on the course was designed
to prepare us for a professional
working environment. Every skill that
I learnt has definitely been transferable
to the workplace, from media law training,
to video editing, to social networking
and setting up blogs.
One of the best parts of the
International Journalism course was
the hostile environment and First
Aid Course (heFAC). We had three
days of intense training by former
Marines who put us through our
paces and gave us hands-on training
and knowledge about how to react in
dangerous environments. I graduated
with a recognised HEFAC qualification
and valuable knowledge about how
to react in situations ranging from
road traffic accidents, to coming
under enemy fire in a war zone,
to a kidnap scenario.
If you want doors to open in the
world of international news then it’s
definitely worth considering this course.
You only have to look at the success rate
of previous years to see how effective
the MA has been in helping students
find work. From my year (2008/09)
alone we already have people working
for BBC World Service, NBC News,
ITN, Reuters and more.”
Simon Hawtin / MA Television Production
Developing documentaries for the likes of the
Discovery Channel and Animal Planet, Simon Hawtin
has seen his dream become reality. And the practical
experience he gained as an MA Television Production
student at Falmouth was the perfect springboard
for his success.
www.falmouth.ac.uk/televisionproduction
“I was working as a freelance
event and film festival manager
interspersed with periods of travel.
But I always knew I wanted to make
documentaries so decided to look into
doing a practical course. I happened
to visit Falmouth and completely fell
in love with the town. When I looked
at the courses available at UCF, they
did exactly the sort of course I was
looking for.
the facilities are really good. The
edit suites are fantastic. I think
I probably spent far too much time
in those suites! Being able to check
your own kit in and out is great too.
As part of the course we had to spend
a month doing a work placement –
you couldn’t graduate without doing
that. I did mine with TwoFour in
Plymouth and was fortunate enough
to receive one of their bursaries,
which pays you for your work.
My experience at Falmouth set me
up for working in the ‘real world’.
I left with a really good skill set.
I see lots of work experience people
now who have done other kinds of
degrees and while they’re bright and
want to work in TV, they can’t shoot,
they can’t edit and they don’t really
know what the building blocks of
a programme are.
I was able to walk into an entry level
job and say “here are a number of
films I’ve shot and edited” – and
straight away I was out there shooting
and cutting taster tapes. Falmouth
enables you to hit the ground running.
I’m now a development assistant
producer for touch Productions.
I’ve found a niche in development;
pitching big ideas to the BBC,
Discovery, Animal Planet and so
on, then shooting taster tapes.
last year I spent six months working
in texas on a series called Dallas DnA
for the Discovery Channel. I’ve also
just finished my work on a new Animal
Planet series called Taking on Tyson,
with Mike Tyson, which is about the
incredible subculture of racing pigeons –
“Sopranos on the rooftops” was the
pitch! It’s a really great project.”
Research degrees – MPhil/PhD
We offer postgraduates the opportunity
to undertake the following research
degree programmes:
— Master of Philosophy (MPhil)
— Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
Each is achieved through an individual
research project in a programme
of study agreed with the Director
of Studies. Both research degrees
represent an original and unique
contribution to research, creating
knowledge and understanding. The PhD
represents greater depth and a more
substantial individual achievement,
while the MPhil is a respected award
in its own right or can be undertaken
as preparation for a PhD.
Completing a research degree
provides a deeper look at life and
gives you the skills to see beneath
the surface of published opinion and
accepted wisdom. The ability to cast a
critical eye and draw new conclusions
is powerful and in demand. Asking the
right questions, choosing the right
methods of enquiry and diligently
sifting through the facts, events,
contributions and opinions all serve
to sharpen creativity.
What are the benefits of doing a
research degree?
Your research questions are unique
to you and will define you as an
expert. You’ll learn to drive your own
research journey with support from
national and international experts
in their field; published scholars who
have made an impact through critical
thinking and creative practice. Your
thesis will contain material which
is worthy of publication and public
presentation. On completion of a
PhD, as a high level reflective
practitioner, you’ll be able to pursue
a career in academia or practice.
Your advanced analytical skills will
also boost your employability in
entrepreneurial, industrial, public
and third sector roles.
Different approaches
Many students choose to study
part-time while they continue
their own art or design practice –
something which can enable
reflective practice to develop over a
longer period and allow additional
time for experiment and analysis.
You may choose to study full-time,
part-time, or a mixture of both,
depending on your circumstances.
You might take a practice-based
or more theoretical approach. We’ll
work with you to develop the most
appropriate approach to answering
your research questions and making
the best of the personal development
opportunities in research degree study.
Supervision and training
We aim for excellence in our
supervisory teams and will make
sure that you’re able to work with
staff with the right mixture of
expertise and experience to enable
you to make the most of your study.
At Falmouth, you’ll have the option
of an interdisciplinary team, with
co-supervisors at businesses or
different institutions.
In addition to guidance from your
supervisory team, research training
is available to all PhD students. The
sessions bring together students in
their first year of doctoral research
to share consideration of the key
issues for research, especially
research in and through art, design
and media. Most of the sessions will
draw on the participants’ specific
research projects. The Foundation
Programme establishes a local
network of support across
neighbouring research fields and
gives you the benefit of a regular
gathering of peers, acting as a
resource to each other.
Awarding bodies
We deliver our research degrees
under a partnership agreement with
the University of the Arts London,
(UAL). UCF students are ultimately
awarded their degrees from UAL,
and benefit from access to its
diverse programme of dedicated
events, seminars and lectures.
Improving digital inclusion
Dr Justin Marshall, in the design
research group Autonomatic, has been
working with computer scientists in
Newcastle University’s Culture Lab on
the ‘Family Hedge’. This device provides a
crafted, tangible and engaging means of
experiences with analogue family photos
and treasured objects – encouraging
inclusivity and the charting of existing
extended family connections in all their
contemporary complexity. This is a
collaborative project with the Digital
will enable its business partner, Woof
Wear (a leader in the field of equestrian
products based in Bodmin, Cornwall)
to develop their in-house design and
test facility, drawing upon Falmouth’s
strength in 3D design, graphics,
branding and performance sportswear.
Through a series of increasingly complex
design and product development
projects, the team will help Woof Wear
introduce a range of new premium
equestrian products.
—
One of the best things
about Falmouth is the
range of different PhDs
and research taking place.
There’s expertise across
a wide range of subject
areas and PhD researchers
have the opportunity to
do an interdisciplinary or
collaborative doctorate.
This means the networking
opportunities for future
work are great.
Supporting new products
Our Design Centre offers businesses and
practitioners a range of design, sampling
and prototyping services and has
continued to work with a wide range
of clients, both locally and nationally.
Many of the projects are commercially
confidential, but recent examples include:
— healthcare: medical devices used
during surgery, hospital ward products
and healthcare products to be used by
patients at home
— truro Cathedral: new resources to
enhance the experience for younger
visitors
— Design companies: watersports
products, new household products,
interior designs for commercial
outlets and restaurants.
Arts and environment
Falmouth plays an international role in
examining the relationship between the
visual arts and ecological thinking, and
has close links with leading organisations
such as Cape Farewell, the Environmental
Change Institute at Oxford University, the
Eden Project and the Royal Society for the
encouragement of Arts, Manufactures
and Commerce (RSA).
Collaborations between artists and
scientists in our RANE research group
explore how we can creatively respond
to our rapidly changing 21st century
environment. RANE researchers have
specialist skills in art and photography,
sculpture, installation and public art,
as well as garden design, user-led
landscape planning and
environmental aesthetics.
3D digital production and digital
economies
The Autonomatic research team
focuses on digital technologies in relation
to autonomous craft practices, with
particular emphasis on collaboration,
accessibility, scales of production and
how manufacturing is changing through
digital technologies. Their research
explores ways of integrating computeraided
design and manufacture with
traditional making skills, challenging
perceptions of the boundaries between
craft and industrial production.
Researchers are also developing
new ways of designing and making
that exploit the creative potential and
connectivity of digital technologies,
and new business approaches to flexible
small-scale production that can connect
with a global economy through the web.
Superfast Cornwall labs
This group is engaged in the key
research challenges associated with the
roll-out of superfast broadband across
Cornwall. Members include Cornwall
Development Company, BT, University
College Falmouth and selected
academic institutions and business
representatives. As the first county in
the UK to benefit from 40Mbs-100Mbs
broadband, there’s a significant
opportunity to develop expertise and
capacity to make the most of pervasive
‘superfast’ connections and to open up
new prospects for digital commerce
and cultural engagement.
The pervasiveness of the proposed
broadband connections promises a
greater breadth of inclusion amongst
the social and commercial communities
distributed across Cornwall’s rural and
coastal landscape. Socially, this new
infrastructure could connect communities
in ways previously not possible – bringing
towns, villages and cities together through
interactive and connected public spaces.
The research team is exploring the match
between the needs and challenges across
Cornwall and the new capabilities the
digital infrastructure presents.

Falmouth has recently been awarded research funding
from the European Social Fund for ten research
students to work with a Cornish business on themes
related to economic regeneration. These include...
1.
Cornwall, Romanticism and the
Maritime empire
In association with the National Maritime
Museum Cornwall, this research
explores Cornwall’s role in national and
international contexts during the period
of the Napoleonic Wars and early 19th
century – in particular how that role can
be brought to a wider public attention via
digital heritage initiatives. The project
examines how Cornwall, and Falmouth
in particular, served as a communications
hub in the expanding British Empire that
contributed to the work of significant
figures in Romantic literature and art
such as Lord Byron, Robert Southey
and JMW Turner.
2.
environmentally and ecologically
durable surface design for the coastal
built environment
A collaboration between UCF, the
University of Exeter and the University
of Plymouth, this PhD aims to better
understand the ecology of artificial
urban coastal habitats, in order to
promote biodiversity and sustainable
approaches to coastal protection. Taking
a design approach, it aims to marry
findings from scientific studies of how
biologically diverse colonisation of
animal and plants in coastal regions can
be encouraged. The effects of saltwater
and sand weathering are also being
investigated using both a scientific
and design-focused approach.
3.
Storytelling as a paradigm for
promoting pro-environmental
behaviour: the effects of perceived
social norms on business attitudes
towards sustainability
Working with Low Carbon Futures,
this research investigates the effects of
storytelling on businesses’ sustainable
behaviour. Individuals’ sustainable
behaviour has been shown to be affected
by their perceptions of what others are
doing (social norms) – and anecdotal
evidence suggests the same principles
may apply to businesses. Exploring
whether businesses are resistant to
change because they think they’re
doing more than they are, this research
assesses how these perceptions can
be challenged.
completing a four-year pottery
apprenticeship in his native Denmark
and later studied 3D Ceramic Design
at Cardiff Institute of Higher Education.
“My research interests are located
in the field of emerging digital design
and fabrication technologies, in
particular the potential these new
tools present for developing new
models of creative practice.”
Tavs has an impressive portfolio
of papers, talks, presentations and
exhibitions with more planned for 2012.
He is also a member of the research
group Autonomatic who were donated
a £30,000 rapid prototyping machine
from leading American company,
“I spent many years exploring various
avenues to fuse my practice in travel
writing and professional surfing
with a PhD. Dr Larry Lynch and
the Performance Writing Research
Group welcomed my PhD proposal
with great enthusiasm and an open
mind. The prime motivation for me
to research a PhD is to take risks
I cannot in freelance writing.”
Sam is the author of Surfing
Brilliant Corners (Alison Hodge
Publishers, Penzance), and is in
the process of completing a second
publication. Business start-up
Full-time PhD student
PhD title: Testing and evaluating
user-centred design methods to realise
a new methodology for the development
of improved healthcare products.
“Studying at Falmouth has been
different from Nanjing, Shanghai,
Amsterdam, Rotterdam and many
other cities where I stayed before;
the UCF research community is
relatively small, but it is active, well
organised and well supported. The
PhD student training sessions, for
example, which are offered every
month for first-year students,
helped me manage my work and
learn to conduct research properly.
I feel lucky to have such great
supervisors, who have been
extremely helpful to me since the
beginning of my PhD study at UCF.
Their support and assistance has
given me the confidence to be able
to continue with my research for
the remaining two years.”
If you’re an EU student from outside the UK wishing to study
be funding implications that you need to be aware of.
If you wish to study for a qualification that is equal to or lower
and are engaged in a number of outreach programmes to
help achieve this. If you have non-traditional qualifications or
APl/APel
The accreditation of prior learning (APL) or accreditation
of prior experiential learning (APEL) is a process which
enables people of all ages and backgrounds to receive
recognition and formal credit for learning acquired in the
past. This might have been acquired through the successful
study of a qualification (or part of a qualification) or through
professional experience.
APL is the account taken of traditional study or
course-based learning that has been formally assessed
by an educational institution and resulted in the award of
a qualification or part-credit for an uncompleted course
of study.
APEL is the account taken of learning experiences
gained through life, work or business that by their nature
cannot be evidenced through formally assessed certification.
For example, you may have been running your own business
as a designer for several years and wish to gain entry to a
related MA award. APEL can be used to assess the skills
and knowledge base you have gained through your
relevant professional experience.
For further information on APL/APEL and to find
out if your prior learning and/or experience might qualify
you for entry on to one of our courses, please contact the
Funding a postgraduate course at Falmouth
A Master’s degree or PhD represents a significant
investment in your future, and you’ll rightly be concerned
about funding. This section is intended to introduce you to
ways of funding your postgraduate course at Falmouth. A
year of full-time postgraduate study is likely to cost around
£8,000 plus tuition fees, so you’ll need to do some planning
in order to get through the course without the distraction
of financial problems.
Apply early to the University College if you can and, if
successful at interview, accept your place as soon as possible
in the year before you wish to begin studying a postgraduate
course. This will give you more time to arrange your finances
and apply for major sources of funding whose competitions
have an early deadline.
For advice and information on all aspects of postgraduate
funding, please contact the bursary Adviser
Professional & Career Development loans
Around 80% of all UK postgraduate students fund their
studies through a Professional & Career Development Loan
(PCDL). Generally aimed at postgraduate students, PCDLs
are a scheme designed to help people who want to improve
their career prospects, but lack the funds to invest in a
suitable vocational programme.
For further details, please call the free phone information
number 0800 585 505 or visit www.direct.gov.uk/cdl
— A PCDL is a bank loan designed to help you pay for workrelated
learning. You don’t have to start paying your loan
back until at least one month after you stop training.
— You can take out a PCDL whether you are employed,
self-employed or unemployed.
— PCDLs are available through an arrangement between
the government and two high street banks.
— Remember that a PCDL is a personal loan between you and
the bank, and you’re responsible for repaying it to the bank.
Before taking out a loan, check how much your monthly
repayments will be, and that you feel confident that you
will be able to make them.
there are three areas that a PCDl can cover:
— Course fees (up to 80% of course fees)
— Other course costs
— Living expenses
Your loan can cover one or more of these elements,
but cannot exceed £10,000 in total. PCDLs will only support
the vocational or learning elements of a course.
