tion from waste to product can be expected to have an impact on prices as well as on marketingpossibilities. This will be pertinent to the market for utilization of sludge but also for the market fornew technologies/phosphorus products (e.g. Struvite or HAP).In order to compete with conventional fertilizers the product must comply with the quality requirementsfor e.g. fertilizers. At the same time, the price of the product must reflect the marketprice for phosphorus. Many of the new technologies are not yet commercially viable. Capital andoperational expenses are typically relatively high and if these expenses are to be covered, the productprice will be accordingly high. This means that the new phosphorus products will not be able tocompete with conventional fertilizers, as the market price for phosphorus is still relatively low. Apolitical requirement for a high rate of phosphorus recycling could become an important tool forinfluencing the market in this direction.A few Danish wastewater utilities have established an internal combustion solution for their sewagesludge. As a result there are today a number of landfill sites for ashes from sludge incineration (e.g.at Lynetten), which can potentially be treated and the phosphorus recovered. The ash from suchsites may in principle be included in the treatment technologies as described in Chapter 5. In connectionwith the recovery of phosphorus, the price of phosphorus is crucial for the profitability of anew technology, as the selling price is part of the overall economy. If the selling price of phosphorusis not sufficiently high during the coming years, ashes from sludge incineration plants may not berecycled and the phosphorus will consequently be lost. Therefore it is important that sludge ash from dedicated combustion of sludge is deposited in acontrolled way to ensure that the phosphorus resource can be recovered when the technology hasbeen developed and/or finances permit. Landfilling of sludge ash could be executed together withother types of ash with a significant content of phosphorus – for example ash from incineration ofmanure fibre, provided that it is not contaminated (for example by heavy metals).Landfills and the handling of these is a well-known technology, but it is necessary to further developthis technology in order to be able to handle the various phosphorus ashes. There will be a need toreduce the costs of disposal, as the economy will be crucial for the implementation of such phosphorusbanks. Phosphorus banks might contribute to further put focus on resource efficiency and couldbecome a new concept for possible development and export in the form of system export. This solutionwould involve a need for further development and it must be clarified how ashes should behandled in the depots/landfills, how the legislation should be for a phosphorus bank, and whethernew or adapted technologies should be required for this preparation of recovery of phosphorus.Based on an examination of the various sludge products and technologies, it has been estimatedthat the Danish potential in relation to exports lies in know-how and that there are opportunities forsystem export outside the EU. The global activities of Danish consultants put them in a uniquesituation, where the latest international and local knowledge is brought to Denmark, while Danishcompanies can assist in adapting technology and solutions to specific local needs in the internationalmarket. There will be a significant international market for technologies that produce economically viableand sustainable products from wastewater and sewage sludge. There is a need for further developmentof these technologies and at the same time the demand for phosphorus fertilizers is expectedto increase. If Denmark is to maintain a leading position internationally within wastewater treatment,it is necessary to be able to demonstrate the technologies. This is only possible if there is awell-functioning cooperation between R&D companies/institutions and wastewater utilities.Innovationspartnerskab for anvendelse af fosfor fra spildevand og spildevandsslam fra spildevandsforsyninger 15
