Cooling Media – Advantages and Disadvantages
Oil-Based Cutting Fluid
Oil: Traditional cutting fluid, at one time used in most
shop operations. Advantages include ease of use and
versatility. Main drawbacks are high cleaning and disposal
costs.
Coolant
Emulsion: Most coolants use a small amount of an oilbased
solution mixed with water to achieve optimal toollife
and maintain part-accuracy through thermal dispersion.
An emulsion uses the oil-based component to
lubricate the cutting tool, and the water as the carrier
base. Additives are used to help avoid bacterial contamination
of the solution, and constant monitoring of the
solution for proper Ph and concentration is essential.
Modern cutting tool geometries place the emphasis on
transferring heat to the chip from the workpiece, so thermal
dispersion is less of an issue in many applications.
Minimal quantity lubrication (MQL)
Minimum quantities of lubricating fluids mixed with air as
a carrier.
Actual cooling-media usage can be reduced to from 5 to
75 ml per hour while still effectively cooling the workpiece
and tooling.
• Advantages: More efficient use of media, typically allowing
higher removal rates while im proving surface
finish. Can improve productivity and reduce chip-processing
and machining costs.
• Disadvantages: The main drawback of MQL is that at
this stage of development, there is no one standard type
of system. Key features that need to be considered are:
• Homogenous mixing of media and air
• Uninterrupted flow of the homogenous media to the
toolholder
The better Shrink Technology
Key Features that need to be considered:
Cutting tool geometries must be optimized for usage
with MQL. If the heat generated by the cutting surface is
allowed to remain in that surface, or in the workpiece, all
of the benefits of MQL are lost.
Air
Out of health reasons as well as cost reasons for maintenance
and disposal of emulsion and MQL, there is a
strong trend onto pure air. There only the blow-effect is
used to clean the parts from chips and to avoid jammed
tools. The critical point here is to have the right amount
and pressure of air at the right point.
Diebold JetSleeve Tooling can solve many of the problems
associated with consistent coolant and air delivery.
If you have a relatively low-speed (under 7K) application,
standard coolant delivery pumps and pressures
work well. If you do go to higher speeds, JetSleeve is
ideal for MQL applications, and Diebold’s technicians
will work with you to ensure your delivery system is calibrated
for best results.
