NEUE MUSIK IN RHEINSBERG
Spiels. Rheinsberg war eine Art Experimentierwerkstatt für Neues. Das verpflichtet. Neben
historischen Wiederaufführungen entsteht wieder Neue Musik in Rheinsberg. Es sind die
Uraufführungen, die Musik lebendig halten. Also vergibt die Musikakademie Rheinsberg
Feldmann heute in DANN UND NUR DANN, WENN... Gerd Domhardt konnte seinen Akademie-
deutsch
I. Einleitung für Tape und E- Gitarre
II. Trio I für Streichtrio
III. Zwischenspiel für Tape und E-Gitarre
IV. Szene für Solotanz und Tape und Dia-Projektionen
V. Trio II für Streichtrio
VI. Zwischenspiel für E-Gitarre, Tape und Streichtrio
VII.
restaurative Welt erinnern soll.
Raphael Heinrich, geboren 1959 in Berlin. Violinstudium an der
1992-1994 tätig als Redakteur in Frankfurt/Main. Seit 1996
Streichquartett I und II (1985/1988), Kammersinfonie (1992),
inzwischen verstorbenen Solisten Karl-Bernhard Sebon.
bedeutendes Podium. Gerd Domhardt verstarb 1997 in Halle.
Domhardts Streichquartett entstand während seiner Meisterschülerzeit bei Ruth Zechlin
Gastaufenthalte in mehreren
Elektronikstudios (u. a. in Bratislava, Budapest und Bourges), mehrfach Auszeichnungen.
So könnte
Raum gegeben.
NEW MUSIC IN RHEINSBERG
When Prince Friedrich was a young man, he insisted that the ink was “still wet” on the pages
of music performed under his patronage. At 24 he filled his first court orchestra in Rheinsberg
with musicians who were some of the most famous virtuosi of their time. Many stood at the
beginning of great careers and composed their own pieces: the Benda brothers, the Grauns,
Schaffrath, Janitsch, Czarth, Baron. Friedrich played the flute and occasionally his teacher
Quantz would stop by. From 1736 to 1740 people referred to Rheinsberg as the “Court of the
Muses”. When the prince later became Prussian King Friedrich II, he took his musicians with
him to Berlin and founded the core of the famous Berlin Staatskapelle in the Lindenoper.
Then a new prince came to Rheinsberg. Prince Heinrich was 14 years younger than his brother
Friedrich. Above all, he cherished the masquerades, Singspiels, tragedies, operettas and the
many forms of musical theater popular at the end of the 18th century. Under him, a new
small theater was built, performing works by Gluck, Piccinni, Sacchini, Grétry, the Berliner
Liederschule and Johann Abraham Peter Schulz, who himself presided over Rheinsberg
musical life for seven years. The prince painted backdrops, recited texts, directed plays and
played first violin. Everything had to be new and of course different than what was done
in Berlin. From 1765 to 1802 master musicians met at a place that was a safe distance from
Berlin, but close enough to attract the attention of the city.
Nearly 200 years later, in 1991, the Rheinsberg Music Academy again began working in the
historical Kavalierhaus, in the newly built Künstlerhaus, and soon afterwards in the small
theater as well. Early manuscripts were viewed with awe, as were performance facilities
and descriptions of the improvisation on older themes. Friedrich’s circle was courageous,
departing from the simple baroque domain and spontaneously composing what’s known
today as “preclassical” music. Seldom did the theater people of Heinrich’s day bother with
popular “forms” of playing. Rheinsberg became a kind of experimental workshop for what
26 27
was new at the time. The legacy continues. Along side the interpretation of historical works,
new music has again found a home in Rheinsberg. It’s the world premiers that keep music
alive, and to that end the Rheinsberg Music Academy commissions new works annually. This
practice began in 1991 with Raphael Heinrich’s Sonata for Solo Flute, performed by Werner
Tast, one of today’s premier flautists. Close cooperation with the United Berlin Ensemble
made possible commissioned works by Sebastian Stier and Matthias Jann; MONOLITH and
mouvement du silence both award winning pieces by young composers. Lothar Voigtländer’s
VOICI - Feuerklang was given its world premiere at Rheinsberg’s Grienericksee lake. The singer
was light by candlelight under the palace colonnade, percussion was set up on the shore,
with the contrabass soloist improvising from the middle of the lake and a fireworks display in
sync with the music. The roofless walls of the theater ruins provided the backdrop for a threelayered
stage used in Helmut Zapf’s approximation, a musical encounter between a strictly
notated string trio, an improvising guitarist and prerecorded tape. It was a multimedia event
combining musicians who appeared as silhouettes behind white canvas screens, a dancer,
and slides of paintings by Rose Schulze projected onto the screens. A master class for lute
and modern guitar inspired a composition for the Lautten Compagney and the Feldmann
guitar duo; an encounter between the sonorous world of Castaldi from the early 17th century
and Klaus Feldmann’s modern touch in DANN UND NUR DANN, WENN... The unexpected and
premature death of Gerd Domhardt prevented the completion of his work commissioned
by the Academy. His previously unreleased String Quartet pays homage to a composer
who never gave up finding what’s new in music. While this CD is being released, other
compositions appear to reassess what is needed today – fresh computer print-outs of new
music in Rheinsberg.
COMPOSERS and COMPOSITIONS
helmut ZapF: approximation
Helmut Zapf was born in 1956 in Rauschengesee, Thuringia.
Besides receiving piano, organ, trumpet and guitar instruction,
he was also trained as an auto mechanic. During his studies as a
choirmaster at the church music schools of Eisenach and Halle,
he regularly took part in vacation courses in contemporary
music in Gera, where he studied under Paul-Heinz Dittrich.
From 1980 to 1982 he worked as a choirmaster. Starting in
1982, he spent three years as a master student under Georg
Katzer at the Akademie der Künste of the GDR. He moved
to Zepernick near Berlin in 1987, where he’s been working
freelance ever since. Zapf has been commissioned to compose pieces for music festivals
in Berlin, Donaueschingen and Dresden. Preparation for commissioned works has led him
to the experimental studios in Freiburg and Oetwil, Switzerland. He’s organized a concert
series as well as the “Randspiele” new music festival in Zepernick’s St. Annen Church,
and he directs the Berlin-Brandenburg “Junge Musik” ensemble. Zapf regularly instructs
participants in the “Jugend komponiert” competition for young composers.
The two string trios come from approximation, a piece for string trio, electric guitar, solo
dancer, slide projection and tape. This work was produced in 1996 and commissioned by the
Rheinsberg Music Academy, where it was premiered during the Pfingstwerkstatt. I intentionally
conceived a piece comprised of various parts and genres in the following order:
I. Prelude for tape and electric guitar
II. Trio I for string trio
III. Interlude for tape and electric guitar
IV. Scene for solo dance and tape and slide projection
V. Trio II for string trio
VI. Interlude for electric guitar, tape and string trio
VII. Epilogue for solo dance, tape and slide projection
28 29
The scenic expression and visual realization was created by the painter Rose Schulze. The
main intention of our piece was to artistically express the search for human closeness. That’s
why the two musical levels of classical string trio and rock guitar were intentionally placed in
separate chambers facing each other on the stage. The dancer, who tries to enter the chambers
in scene IV, is positioned – like the electroacoustic tape – between the two musical worlds. The
compositional tightrope walk turns the event into a musical whole while at the same time
giving each part autonomy. The two string trios play an important role in this process, because
they come directly before and after the dance scene.
The basic structure of Trio I is chordal material consisting of the notes C, C sharp, and E flat,
and forms the opening with its 48 bars. In the first section, this chordal material develops into
a contra-puntally variable and melodically meaningless phrase A - B - C - C sharp - E flat, which
later in the trio approaches once again a noise-like character. This helps to achieve a structural
connection to the other parts of the work, also connecting back to the somewhat suffocating
opening. Trio II, which comes after the scene seems to end in resignation, is intentionally
structured with a fugai beginning – C, D, D flat – meant to recall an isolated and restorative
world. This leads to an attempted escape in the form of rhythmic and contrapuntal compression
which causes Trio II to end statically and aggressively.
english
The sudden ending of Trio I, which for non-dramatic performances would omit the following
Interlude I, makes it possible dramatically and structurally for the second trio to act as a kind of
second movement with the character of an epilogue.
KlauS FelDmann: Dann unD nur Dann, wenn
Klaus Feldmann was born in 1951 in Halle. From 1975 to
1980 he studied guitar and composition at the Hochschule für
Musik „Hans Eisler“ in Berlin. He studied composition under
André Asriel. While still a student, he became musical director
of a theater until 1989, where he grew familiar with music
for theater. Working at the same time as both performer and
composer, he toured internationally with the Feldmann guitar
duo, also composing a series of works for various chamber
music groups. Feldmann has been working as a freelance
guitarist and composer since 1989, and has been Managing
Director of A&R for the Swiss record company MUSIC ALLIANCE since 1994.
Feldmann‘s compositions include numerous works for chamber music, film and radio plays.
DANN UND NUR DANN, WENN (quartet for tiorbino, tiorba, two guitars and tape) is an attempt to
find a harmonic relationship between instruments that, in spite of sharing an equally long history
of development and possessing supposed similarities, are radically different from each other. The
development of the lute, for example, had practically ended by the middle of the 18th century,
while the development of the guitar continues to this day. The idea was not to demonstrate or
copy specific styles, but rather to allow the instruments to serve a certain concept.
30 31
The main idea of the work stems from the difference in time of each instrument’s historical
blossoming. In addition, an ally was created – the tape – which eloquently symbolizes the
phenomenon of time, expanding the sonorous quality of the instruments into a further
dimension. The sounds recorded onto tape are exclusively original lute and guitar sounds
processed electronically. Despite the alienation effect, a strong cohesion exists between the
taped material and the live music. The gradual gliding between tape and live music creates
moments of great clarity, points where the instruments themselves stand out and represent
their special sound qualities before they once again disappear in the constant stream of time.
Leading the instruments together into a final quartet generates hope that if the new and old
are combined in a meaningful way, both accepting their respective peculiarities, they can lead
to a new quality reflected in the title, “Dann und nur dann, wenn...”, or “Then and only then,
if...”. And finally, if one wishes to get to the core of the piece, then one important prerequisite is
time and taking time, especially while listening. To discover the charm of this work, the listener
must open up to and grasp the slight changes taking place during long passages, which are
reminiscent of earlier minimalist music.
Raphael Heinrich was born in 1959 in Berlin. He studied
and Sonata for Violin and Bells (1997).
The Flute Sonata was completed in 1992, commissioned by the Rheinsberg Music Academy for
the renowned soloist Karl-Bernhard Sebon, who has since died. The main motif goes back to
an impression made on the composer in the early 1980s. It’s the nymph song of a birch tree,
its leaves and branches giving way to the most subtle forces of the summer wind, down to its
swaying trunk. The soloist insisted on a number of modern techniques in the piece, provoking
wild and sharply contrasting events during some passages.
Gerd Domhardt was born in 1945 in Wolmirstedt and grew
up in Schlesingerneundorf in Thuringia. From 1963 to 1968
he studied musicology, music education and German studies
at the Martin-Luther-Universität in Halle/Wittenberg. He was
a member of the Hallenser Madrigalisten from 1963 to 1973.
During the same period he read manuscripts on choral music
for the Deutschen Verlag für Musik publishing house in Leipzig.
Starting in 1973, he spent three years as a master student
under Ruth Zechlin at the Akademie der Künste of the GDR,
later working as a freelance composer in Halle. From 1987 to
1997 he was a lecturer at the Institute for Musicology at the university in Halle and guest
lecturer at international courses in composition. He won the 1977 Händel award, the 1978
32 33
composition award from the Hans Stieber Foundation, the 1982 Hanns Eisler award, the
1988 Arts Award of the GDR, and was a guest of honor at the Villa Massimo in Rome in 1993.
Domhardt gave international composers of contemporary music an important podium as
initiator and director of the “Annäherung” concert series at the Händelhaus of the City of
Halle. Gerd Domhardt died in 1997 in Halle.
Domhardt’s string quartet was written while he was a master student under Ruth Zechlin in
1973-74. Throughout the four interconnected sections, he triggers a conflict between static and
dynamic events in sonorous, polyrhythmically structured surfaces, directly foreshadowing the
tonal qualities of his later night pieces. In the tradition of a sonata movement, he introduces
the two opposing gestures at the very beginning; the unison opening marked “con passione”
puts the entire 12 tone material in fortissimo, exposing the typical second invervals with their
inversions in only three measures. Aside from that, an interval deduction of the opening gesture,
now comes as a dolce motif in the first violin. Both gesture appear repeatedly, the dolce motif
now coming from the cello, and as a transition to the second section again from the first violin.
The static gesture pounds itself solidly into octaves, periods of moaning, and chords. Within
the new playing techniques, which can be individually shaped, the four players free themselves
from the uniformity of the static gesture, the intervals now adding the tritone to the octave.
Flute-like sounds from the strings introduce the third section, in which the four voices playfully
hint at choral and waltz intonation. Together but rhythmically free, they once again find the
dolce motifs of the opening, ending in a pacified pianissimo. The composition is dedicated to
the Erben Quartet of the Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin.
Brandenburg Colloquium for New Music at the Rheinsberg Music Academy. In 1996 he gave
a feature concert and received his first commission to compose a piece from the Rheinsberg
Council in 1997. Since then, he’s been an instructor at the Hochschule für Musik “Hanns
Eisler”, and since 1998 trombonist in the “European Music Project” ensemble in Ulm.
mouvement du silence (movement of silence) is an attempt to make a music audible which
comes from silence, returns transformed and develops all events exclusively from within
itself. The process of crystallization plays a formative role on various musical levels. The
instrumentation offers a wide spectrum from nearly toneless noise-like sounds of the O-Daiko
drums and congas to the unchanging, clearly contoured and fixated alto flute, clarinet and
cello. At one particular point, the material is confronted by itself in another concentration, an
34 35
addition that changes and marks the return of a build-up lasting more than eleven minutes.
This build-up leads back to its source, altered by new color, contour or even a new awareness,
thereby giving the starting position a different quality.
lothar VoigtlänDer: VOICI - Feuerklang
Lothar Voigtländer was born in 1943 in Leisnig, Saxony. From
1954 to 1962 he was a choirboy in the Dresden Kreuzchor. After
completing secondary school, he attended the Hochschule für
Musik „Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy“ in Leipzig from 1962 to
1968, where he studied conducting under Rolf Reuter and Franz
Jung and composition under Fritz Geißler. After completing his
studies, he became choral director and choirmaster at Altmark
Theater in Stendal. From 1970 to 1973 he was a master student
under Günther Kochan at the Akademie der Künste of the GDR.
During this time he wrote his first larger works for orchestra,
including Metamorphosen for Orchestra in 1970 and his First Symphony also in 1970. He’s
been working as a freelance composer in Berlin since 1973. Starting in the mid 1970s,
Voigtländer got heavily involved in electronic composition, a practice that has taken a
special place in his work ever since. He’s been a guest at many electronic music studios, for
instance in Bratislava, Budapest and Bourges, and he has won many awards.
The composition VOICI - Feuerklang represents my most consistent attempt to make all
compositional levels and spaces with respect to multidimensional perception the object of an
english
artistic event. That means forming the subject, which gives rise to the theatrical framework, as a
continuing process of unfolding the sound, as well as modulating the other parameters (space,
light, movement), all fixed in the musical notation. The listener is then defined as the “center”
of the sound space. The development and movement of the sounds are no longer fixed on one
position or performer. The simultaneous production of both the sounds in virtual (electronic)
space and the noise and sound development in real time (metal plates, anvil and steel bars)
give the impression of a “sound bell” – the listener finds himself inside the sound.
Included in the “composition of spaces” are lake, park landscape, architecture, stage
constructions, lighting, etc. The impression of a “staged sound landscape” is strengthened by
“pyrotechnic choreography” lasting more than 45 minutes.
SebaStian Stier: MOnOLITH
Sebastian Stier was born in 1970 in Köthen, Saxony-Anhalt.
He was trained in the children’s composition class of Günther
Eisenhardt from 1984 to 1989. From 1991 to 1997 he studied
composition under Paul-Heinz Dittrich at the Hochschule
1995 and 1996, the same year winning a Busoni Prize grant
from the Berlin Akademie der Künste. He was commissioned to
compose works by the Berlin Studios for New Music, the Rheinsberg Music Academy, the
Dresden Center for Contemporary Music and by the Berlin City Council. His works have
36 37
been performed in Berlin, Rheinsberg, Illingen, Dresden, Moscow, Kaipeda, Lithuania and
in Hartford, Connecticut. His works have also been played on Deutschland Radio, SFB and
MDR. In 1998 he took part in a composition seminar of the Vienna Klangforum. And he
continued his studies in 1998/99 under Hanspeter Kyburz at the Hochschule für Musik
“Hanns Eisler”.
The title MONOLITH (hewn from one stone) has three essential meanings for me:
The tonal material. Organized tonal material is important in all my works. In MONOLITH,
however, all sections are dominated by a single chordal structure, which barely changes. The
material is modified only by the timbre of the various instruments, rhythmic overlay while the
chords are split into lines, and slight microtonal coloration at the end of the piece.
The form. The interplay between surfaces and accents mark the formal shaping of the four sections
of the piece. Surfaces and accents, however, are not intended as opposites. I consider an accent a
kind of snapshot of the surface, and surfaces as accents stretched out through time. Static surfaces
become animated surfaces, which in turn are resolved and formed into new, unfocused accents
which no longer lie exactly on top of each other. Through this process of dislocation, I end up
looking through a virtual microscope at what lies under the surface of the sound, giving me another
perspective of one and the same thing. I’m more or less looking at a stone from different sides.
The associative level. Alone through the rather unusual choice of the title, associations are
inevitable. These, of course, I cannot prescribe, but I can steer them in a certain direction or work
against them. I could imagine, for example, that MONOLITH brings to mind something quite solid,
compact and unified. While this expectation is fully satisfied at the beginning of the piece – the
four instruments playing at extremely low registers are “welded” together into one sound – I tried
later in the piece to compose against those expectations. More space is given to the character of
the single instruments through the blurred borders between surface and accent.
II. Trio I pour trio à cordes
III. Interlude pour bande sonore et guitare électrique
IV.
essais ).
