MZB – KEY TO FAMILIES OF EUROPEAN FRESHWATER MACROINVERTEBRATES
LEAF LITTER DECOMPOSITION IN A LOW ORDER TROPICAL STREAM IN SRI
LANKA
The decomposition study of three leaf species was carried out on upper reach of Eswathu Oya, a low
order stream in the wet climatic zone of Sri Lanka: a) bamboo (Ochlandra stridula) with tough tissue;
b) rubber (Hevea brasiliensis) with middle tough tissue, and c) Alstonia macrophylla with soft tissue.
‘The litter bag technique’ (8 mm and 100µm) was used. The decomposition experiment was lasting
totally 300 days. The k-rates in coarse bags were -0.0090 d -1 for bamboo, -0.0253 d -1 for rubber and -
0.0550 d -1 for Alstonia, increasing significantly with decreasing tissue toughness of these leaf species.
Macrozoobenthic colonization started immediately after the exposition, more or less in all coarse
bags. But the temporal colonization patterns are different for each leaf species, with adversative
strategies in rubber (fast maximum, fast away migration), and bamboo leaves (slow increase to a
plateau). Dominating colonizing group is Diptera, followed by Coleoptera. Macroinvertebrates and
potentially high mechanic abrasion influence leaf litter decomposition, whereby we can’t differentiate
the contribution of each factor yet. Toughness of leaf tissue is a very important factor in breakdown
processes.
