DISTURBANCE AND DIVERSITY AT TWO SPATIAL SCALES
Disturbance is regarded as an important factor in influencing diversity in aquatic communities.
Disturbances can act on a local scale (e.g. a single pond) or at the regional scale and impact a network
of communities, a so-called metacommunity.
In a microcosm experiment we tested the influence of two disturbance frequencies at two spatial
scales on the diversity of benthic protozoan metacommunities. Metacommunities consisted of four
local communities and contained four ciliate species which could migrate actively among the local
communities. Disturbance was simulated by removing a part of the protozoan metacommunity and
replacing it with uncolonized substrate. For eight weeks, abundances of ciliates were surveyed to
compare diversity among the treatments.
At the end of the experiment, disturbance of high frequency resulted in a decrease of diversity
compared to the undisturbed control and the weakly disturbed treatments. When disturbance acted at
the local scale, this reduction in diversity was due to species loss, whereas disturbance at the regional
scale did not influence the species number but the dominance structure of the community.
