„Meine Motivation ist die Arbeit

“What motivates me is working with the local people”
Jung, apart, engagiert: Die Weststeirerin Nina Passegger leitet
die Geschicke der Child & Family Foundation seit mehr als
vier Jahren. In einem Interview erzählt sie, was sie beflügelt und
wie sie das Leben zwischen Familie und Beruf meistert.
Sie begleiten die CFF nun schon seit
ihrer Gründung im Mai 2008 und haben
in dieser Zeit die Erfolgsgeschichte der
Stiftung mitgeschrieben. Was waren für
Sie die Highlights der vergangenen Jahre?
Für mich persönlich ist jedes Projekt der
Foundation ein Highlight. Die Zusammenarbeit
mit Menschen aus unterschiedlichen
Ländern und Kulturen ist eine unbezahlbare
Erfahrung und birgt oft auch einige Herausforderungen.
Besondere Highlights für mich
waren der Startschuss unseres Projekts in
Südafrika und das damit verbundene Treffen mit Südafrikas Ikone
Nelson Mandela und natürlich die Eröffnung unserer ersten eigenen
Lyoness Foundation Schule, der Escuela Lyoness, in Honduras. In diesem
Projekt liegt mein ganzes Herzblut, da der gesamte Projektablauf
– vom Kauf des Grundstücks über den Bau der Schule bis hin zur
Implementierung unseres eigenen Lyoness Bildungsprogramms – viel
Zeit und Energie beansprucht hat. Aber es hat sich gelohnt. Die Freude
der Kinder, unsere Schule besuchen zu können, und der Stolz ihrer
Eltern motivieren mich noch stärker, mit unserer Child & Family
Foundation weitere Schulen weltweit zu eröffnen und somit noch
vielen Kindern Zugang zu Bildung zu verschaffen.
Die Leiterin einer weltweit aktiven Stiftung zu sein erfordert
eine starke innere Motivation, eine Vision. Was treibt Sie zu
Höchstleistungen an?
Meine größte Motivation ist die Arbeit mit den Menschen vor Ort,
der Umgang mit den Begünstigten, ganz egal, ob es Kinder, Jugendliche
oder Erwachsene sind. Zu sehen, wie viele Menschen unter oft
menschenunwürdigen Bedingungen leben müssen und ihre Lebensgeschichte
zu erfahren, das motiviert mich, täglich mein Bestes zu
geben und wirklich etwas zu bewegen.
Young, individual and dedicated: Nina Passegger from western
Styria has been managing the fortunes of the Child & Family
Foundation for more than four years. In this interview she explains
what drives her and how she manages to achieve a work-life balance.
You have been working with the CFF since it was established
in May 2008, and over this time have played
an instrumental role in the success of the Foundation.
What have the highlights been for you over the last few
years?
For me personally, every project of the Foundation is a highlight.
Working with people from different countries and cultures
is a priceless experience that often entails some stern
challenges. One particular high-point for me was starting our
project in South Africa and meeting the icon of the country
that is Nelson Mandela. And obviously the opening of our first
Lyoness Foundation School, the Escuela Lyoness, in Honduras.
I put my heart and soul into this project as the entire process – from
buying the land then building the school to implementing our own Lyoness
educational programme – demanded a great deal of time and energy.
But it was worth it. Seeing the joy on the faces of the children attending
our school and their proud parents only motivates me even more
to open further schools around the world with our Child & Family
Foundation, thereby bringing education to many more children.
Heading up a global Foundation requires strong inner motivation
and a vision. What drives you to deliver such maximum performances?
My greatest motivation is working with local people and the people benefiting
from the projects, regardless whether they are children, young
people or adults. Seeing how many people are forced to live under what
are often quite “inhumane” circumstances and learning about their life
stories is motivation enough for me to give my best every day and really
achieve something.
You have a 3 year-old son. How do you manage to reconcile your
family life with all this travelling you have to do in your career?
My whole life revolves around my family. As far as possible I always try to

Meine Familie ist der Mittelpunkt meines Lebens. Ich versuche, meine
beruflichen und privaten Ziele so gut als möglich unter einen Hut zu
bringen. Das erfordert ein sehr gutes Zeitmanagement und selbstverständlich
die nicht mehr wegzudenkende Unterstützung meines familiären
Umfeldes. Ich versuche auch, meine Arbeit meinem Sohn näherzubringen
und ihn an den Projekten teilhaben zu lassen. Wenn er
etwas älter ist, möchte ich ihn gern zu einigen Projekten mitnehmen,
damit er sieht und versteht, warum seine Mutter so oft weg ist.
Die Projekte der CFF führen Sie nicht selten in politisch unsichere,
potenziell gefährliche Regionen der Welt. Wie gehen Sie
mit Gefahrensituationen um?
Solche Dinge darf man nicht unterschätzen. Ich habe mit der Zeit gelernt
– auch durch unsere Projektpartner, die teilweise schon jahrelang
im Projektgebiet leben –, wie man sich in den entsprechenden
Ländern und Kulturen verhält und bewegt. Ich bin grundsätzlich
allem gegenüber positiv eingestellt, trotzdem gilt es, vorsichtig zu sein.
Ich habe aber noch nie eine gefährliche Situation erlebt, die mein Leben
oder das der Menschen in meinem Umfeld bedroht hätte.
Das Jahr 2012 war für die CFF ein Jahr voller Neuerungen –
auf welche Entwicklungen dürfen wir in naher Zukunft noch
gespannt sein?
Wir richten unseren Fokus in nächster Zeit verstärkt auf Projekte auf
nationaler Ebene, also auf Länderprojekte. Der Ausbau der Bildungspatenschaften
auf alle Lyoness Länder sowie die
Gründung von eigenen Child & Family-Ländervereinen
stehen dabei im Mittelpunkt
der nächsten Monate.

Interview
strike a balance between my professional and private goals. This requires
excellent time management and obviously the constant support
of my family, which I could not do without. I also try to bring my work closer
to my son and let him experience the projects. When he is a bit older I
would love to take him with me to some of the projects so that he can
see and understand why his mother has to travel so much.
You often have to manage CFF projects in regions around the
world that are politically unstable and potentially dangerous. How
do you cope with that?
You should never underestimate these things. Over time – and with the
help of our project partners, some of whom have lived in the project areas
for many years – I have learned how to behave and move around in
the various countries and cultures. Fundamentally speaking I take a positive
approach to everything, but nevertheless you need to take care. I
have never been in a dangerous situation where either my own life or the
lives or those with me were at risk.
The year 2012 was a busy one for the CFF – what new developments
can we eagerly await in the near future?
Looking forward we will be focusing more on national projects in different
countries. Over the coming months one of our main tasks will be to
extend the educational sponsorships to all Lyoness countries as well as
set up separate Child & Family country associations.

Qunu, ein kleines, unscheinbares Dorf am Ostkap Afrikas.
Und doch hat es in der Vergangenheit immer wieder für
Aufsehen gesorgt: als Geburtsort Nelson Mandelas. 1918
wurde der Friedensnobelpreisträger und ehemalige Präsident Südafrikas
hier geboren.
Trotz der Bekanntheit des Ortes leben hier viele Menschen in
ärmlichen Verhältnissen. Und auch die Schule des Ortes ist stark renovierungsbedürftig.
Seit ein Sturm im Jahr 2002 Teile der Schule mit
sich gerissen hat, werden derzeit 228 Schüler in viel zu kleinen Klas-
senzimmern unterrichtet, die schon lange kein ideales Lernumfeld
mehr bieten. Die CFF hat sich deshalb der Schule angenommen
und wird in den kommenden sechs Monaten die No-Moscow Primary
School von Grund auf neu errichten. Dabei erhält die CFF
Unterstützung von prominenter Seite.
Kooperation mit der Mandela-Familie
Nelson Mandela hat sich zeit seines Lebens für Kinder und ihr Recht
auf Bildung eingesetzt. Und auch heute ist es dem 94-Jährigen ein
großes Anliegen, wie er selbst verrät: „Bildung ist wichtig, denn nur
wer gebildet ist, kann ein Leader sein.“ Daher unterstützt er das CFF-
Projekt in seinem Heimatort gemeinsam mit seiner Frau Graça Machel
und seinem 21-jährigen Enkel Mbuso, der als Mitglied der Lyoness
Community den Kontakt zur CFF hergestellt hat.
Der Startschuss für den Schulbau fiel am 16. Juli 2012. Zu diesem Anlass
waren Hubert Freidl, Nina Passegger und ein Team von Lyoness.TV
angereist, um Nelson Mandela und seine Familie persönlich kennenzulernen.
Deren Freude über das gemeinsame Schulprojekt ist groß. „Wir
danken der CFF dafür, dass sie den langen Weg von Österreich gekommen
ist, um hier in Südafrika etwas zu verändern“, versichert Graça
Machel. „Wir sind uns absolut sicher, dass dies erst der Anfang unserer
Zusammenarbeit mit der Child & Family Foundation ist.“
Qunu – a small, inconspicuous village in Eastern Cape in Africa.
Yet in the past it has attracted attention over and over again, as the
birthplace of Nelson Mandela. Nobel Peace Prize winner and former
President of South Africa, Mandela was born here in 1918.
In spite of its fame, many people here live in poor conditions,
and the local school is also in dire need of repair. Ever since a storm
ripped off parts of the school back in 2002, a total of 228 pupils
have been taught in classrooms that are much too small and for a
long time have failed to offer anything resembling an ideal learning
environment. This is why the CFF has taken the school on and over
the coming six months will be completely building the No-Moscow
Primary School, but the Foundation is also receiving some rather
special support.
Cooperation with the Mandela family
Nelson Mandela has devoted his life to children and their right to education.
This is a major priority for the 94 year-old even today, as he
said himself: “Education is important, as only those who are educated
can become leaders.” This is why he is supporting the CFF project
in his home village together with his wife Graça Machel and his
21 year-old grandson Mbuso, who as a member of the Lyoness
Community made the first contact with the CFF.
The re-construction of the school started on 16 July 2012. For the
occasion, Hubert Freidl, Nina Passegger and a team from Lyoness.TV
travelled out to Africa to meet Nelson Mandela and his family personally.
Their joy about the joint school project was clear for all
to see. “We are grateful to the CFF for making the long journey from
Austria to make a real change here in South Africa”, said Graça
Machel. “We are absolutely convinced that this only signals the start
of our cooperation with the Child & Family Foundation.”

27 Jahre saß Nelson Mandela im Gefängnis,
am 11. Februar 1990 wurde er aus der Haft
entlassen. Bereits mit seiner legendären
Soweto-Rede am Tag der Freilassung setzte
er ein Zeichen der Versöhnung. Bei den
ersten demokratischen Wahlen 1994 wurde
er zum Präsidenten Südafrikas gewählt.
Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years
before finally being released on 11 February
1990, and his legendary Soweto speech on the
day of his release represented the first step in
the process of reconciliation. Following the first
democratic elections in 1994 he became the
President of South Africa.

die präsidiale Republik (Hauptstadt
Pretoria) ist eine sehr junge Demokratie
mit einem Wahlrecht, das erst seit 1994
für alle Menschen gilt. Bis Anfang der
1990er-Jahre galt in Südafrika ein striktes
Apartheidsystem, die Diskriminierung
der schwarzen Bevölkerung gehörte zum
Alltag. Erst der internationale Druck der
Staatengemeinschaft, das Engagement des
Afrikanischen Nationalkongresses (ANC)
und insbesondere das Wirken von Nelson
Mandela läuteten den Umschwung ein.

winner is a symbol for freedom and tolerance.

With its population of 50 million, most
people have a picture of South Africa
that is cheerful and colourful, not least
thanks to the football World Cup in
2010. But this was not always the
case. This presidential republic (capital
city: Pretoria) is a very young democracy,
and voting rights were only
extended to the entire population in
1994. A stringent apartheid system
was in force in South Africa until the
beginning of the 1990s, where the
black population suffered discrimination
at every turn. It was only the pressure
exerted by the international community,
the work of the African National
Congress (ANC) and particularly
the impact of Nelson Mandela that
ushered in the change.

Manche Dinge im Leben möchte man sich nicht einmal im
Traum vorstellen: Unschuldig im Gefängnis zu sitzen,
unterdrückt zu werden, für seine Hautfarbe diskriminiert
zu werden. Müsste man das mehr als 27 Jahre ertragen, wäre man
vermutlich ein gebrochener Mensch – oder von Hass erfüllt.
Um so beeindruckender erscheinen vor diesem Hintergrund Charakter,
Weisheit und Güte von Nelson Mandela. Als er 1990 freikommt,
hält er vor mehr als 120.000 Menschen in Soweto, einer Township nahe
Johannesburg, eine beeindruckende Rede. Keine Worte des Zornes oder
des Hasses, stattdessen eine Einladung „an alle Menschen“, an einem
„nichtrassistischen, geeinten und demokratischen Südafrika“ zu arbeiten.
Zwanzig Jahre später weiß man: Wäre Mandela nicht gewesen,
wäre Südafrika in einem Rassen- und Bürgerkrieg untergegangen.
Jung und schwarz – und unterdrückt. Die
Apartheidgesetze der burischen Nationalisten
verlangten eine strikte Trennung zwischen
Schwarz und Weiß. Der junge Rechtsanwalt
Nelson Mandela kämpfte gegen diese
Willkür in seinem Heimatland. Am 5. August
1962 wurde er deswegen verhaftet.

There are some things in life we wouldn’t even like
to dream about: sitting in prison, innocent, suffering oppression,
and being discriminated against for your skin colour.
If someone had had to bear this for more than 27 years,
they presumably would today be a broken man. Or filled
with hatred.
Against this backdrop, the character, wisdom and benevolence
of Nelson Mandela seem all the more impressive.
When he was released in 1990 he gave an awe-inspiring
speech to more than 120,000 people in Soweto, a
township nearby Johannesburg. No mention was made of
anger or hatred, and instead he invited “all people” to work
towards a “non-racial, united and democratic South Africa”.
Twenty years later we know that if it hadn’t been for Mandela,
South Africa would have been overcome by a racial and
civil war.
From the Thembu royal family to law studies
Nelson Mandela is a man of reconciliation and dialogue, like
no other in the history of the world. The young Nelson Rolihlahla,
as he was then known, was rather hot-headed in his
youth. Coming from the Thembu royal family of the Xhosa
people, he began studying law in 1939 and took an early interest
in politics; this led to conflicts with the university and
eventually he was expelled. Only in Johannesburg was he
able to continue and complete his studies.
As part of the ANC (African National Congress), the
leading political movement fighting against apartheid (and
banned from 1960 to 1990) Mandela renounced the use of
violence. The only event that prompted Mandela to re-think
his position for a while was the Sharpeville massacre in
1960, when 69 black protesters, including women and children,
were shot. In 1961 he became the leader of the armed
wing of the ANC (“Spear of the Nation”).
His arrest in 1962 and the many years he spent in prison
caused him to change his views again – this turn of
events strengthened Mandela in his convictions about promoting
peaceful resistance, very much in the spirit of Mahatma
Gandhi who fought for freedom in India. In spite of
the significant harassment and humiliation, Mandela treated
his white guards in the prison on Robben Island with the utmost
respect and civility – and became a respected figure.
Prison guard James Gregory, originally a brutal white racist
who looked on black people as a subhuman race, became a
friend of Mandela over the years – because he realised that
“the blacks” were not all about terror and simply wanted the

politischen Bewegung im Kampf gegen die Apartheid (und von
1960 bis 1990 verboten), war Mandela ein Vertreter des Gewaltverzichts.
Erst das Sharpeville-Massaker im Jahre 1960, wo 69 schwarze
Demonstranten, darunter Frauen und Kinder, erschossen wurden, ließ
Mandela für kurze Zeit umdenken. 1961 wurde er der Anführer des
bewaffneten Flügels des ANC („Speer der Nation“).
Seine Verhaftung 1962 und die lange Zeit im Gefängnis ließen ihn
wieder umdenken – und bestärkten Mandela in seiner Überzeugung
des gewaltfreien Widerstands, ganz im Sinne des indischen Freiheitskämpfers
Mahatma Gandhi. Trotz Schikanen und Demütigungen begegnete
Mandela dem weißen Wachpersonal auf der Gefangeneninsel
Robben Island mit großem Respekt und Höflichkeit – und wurde zur
geachteten Persönlichkeit. Der Gefängniswärter James Gregory, ursprünglich
ein brutaler weißer Rassist, der Schwarze nur als Untermenschen
betrachtete, wurde über die Jahre zu einem Freund Mandelas
– weil er begriff, dass „die Schwarzen“ nicht für Terror stehen, sondern
einfach nur gleiche Rechte für alle einfordern. Der Regisseur Bille
August hat diese Geschichte 2007 verfilmt („Goodbye Bafana“).
Weil Mandela seine Überzeugungen und seinen Kampf nie aufgab,
ist er zu einem Vorbild und Idol auf der ganzen Welt geworden. In
seinen Memoiren („Der lange Weg zur Freiheit“, 1994 in mehr als 20
Sprachen erschienen) schreibt Mandela bescheiden:
„Ich hatte keine Erleuchtung, keine einzigartige Offenbarung [...],
ich tat es einfach, weil ich nicht anders konnte.“

fertig! Zur Eröffnung am 23. August luden CEO Hubert
Freidl und CFF-Director Nina Passegger zahlreiche Gäste:
So waren Mario Hoffmann, CEO Lyoness America, das Leaders
Team USA, CFF-Stiftungsratspräsident Mathias Wunderle, Vertreter
des honduranischen Bildungsministeriums und der Bürgermeister von
La Ceiba vor Ort, als Hubert Freidl das Band am Haupteingang durchschnitt
und damit das Gebäude für den
Schulalltag eröffnete.
Zur Feier des Tages führten die
Schulkinder Tanz- und Gesangsstücke
vor. Die Besichtigung des Schulgeländes
bot den Anwesenden einen Einblick
in die zukünftigen Räumlichkeiten
der Lehrer und Schüler. Besonders
erfreulich ist die von der Greenfinity
Foundation gespendete Photovoltaikanlage
auf dem Dach. Der daraus gewonnene
Strom deckt den kompletten
Energiebedarf der Schule. Zusätzlich
wurde das Projekt von Sachspenden von Lyoness Partnern unterstützt,
die in Containern nach Honduras geschickt wurden.
Starten wird der Schulbetrieb mit einer Pre-School-Klasse im
Alter von 5 bis 6 Jahren. Darüber hinaus wird es eine erste Klasse mit
Kindern im Alter von 7 bis 8 Jahren geben. Die rund 60 Schüler erhielten
zur Feier des Tages jeweils ein School Starter Kit der CFF als
Geschenk und sind damit ideal für den ersten Tag in der neuen Schule
ausgerüstet.

Many guests were invited by CEO Hubert Freidl and CFF Director
Nina Passegger to the opening ceremony on 23 August, meaning
that the CEO of Lyoness America Mario Hoffmann, the USA Leaders’
Team, the Chairman of the CFF Foundation Board of Trustees
Mathias Wunderle, representatives of the Honduran Ministry of Education
and the Mayor of La Ceiba were all present when Hubert
Freidl cut through the ribbon across
the main entrance and declared the
school officially open.
In celebration of this the school pupils
performed dances and sang songs.
The guests were given a guided tour of
the school grounds, giving them an
idea of where the children and teachers
will be learning and working in the
future. The photovoltaic installation on
the roof of the school, as donated by
the Greenfinity Foundation, was a particular
highlight, and great to see. The
electricity it provides is sufficient to cover all of the school’s energy
needs. The project was also supported by donations in-kind from
Lyoness partners, sent by containers to Honduras.
The school will start with a pre-school class for children aged 5
to 6. There will also be a primary 1 class with children aged 7 to 8.
The roughly 60 pupils in the school received a School Starter Kit
from the CFF as a present to celebrate their first day, which means
they are all well-equipped for starting their new school.

und dort zuhause bin“
Die Schweizerin Doris Eggenberger betreibt ein Spital in
Honduras und ist Direktorin der neu eröffneten Escuela
Lyoness. Ihre Ziele sind hoch gesteckt: Die Schule soll die beste
des ganzen Landes werden.
Doris Eggenberger ist viel in der Welt herumgekommen.
In Buchs im Kanton St. Gallen aufgewachsen, hat sie 22
Jahre lang bei verschiedenen Fluggesellschaften gearbeitet.
Eine ihrer zahlreichen Reisen führte die gebürtige Schweizerin
nach Honduras. Das war 1985. Damals hatte sie die Gelegenheit, mit
zwei Medizinstudenten eine Nacht in der Notaufnahme des Universitätsspitals
in Tegucigalpa zu verbringen. „Die mangelhafte medizinische
Versorgung und die Not der Patienten, die ich dort erlebte, veränderten
mein Leben“, erzählt die sympathische
Eidgenossin. In ihr entstand der
Wunsch, ein eigenes Spital zu gründen.
Aus dem Wunsch wurde schließlich
Wirklichkeit: Im Juni 2000 wurde das
„Medical Center La Ceiba“ eröffnet, das
sie seitdem persönlich betreut.
Zehn Jahre später lernte Doris Eggenberger
die Verantwortlichen der Child &
Family Foundation kennen. Als sie erfuhr,
dass die CFF ihre erste Lyoness Foundation
School in Honduras realisieren wollte,
war sie sofort Feuer und Flamme für das
Projekt. „Dass ich darüber hinaus zur Direktorin
der Schule bestellt wurde, ist eine besondere Ehre für mich“,
gesteht sie. „Ich habe mein Herzblut in dieses Projekt gesteckt und
möchte es so lange als möglich begleiten.“
Als Direktorin der Escuela Lyoness in La Ceiba hat sie vor allem
ein Ziel: ihren 60 Schülern, die im Herbst ihr erstes Schuljahr begonnen
haben, eine umfangreiche und solide Ausbildung zu ermöglichen.
Dafür soll das von der CFF erstellte Bildungskonzept, das Lyoness
Education Program, sorgen. „Wir werden den Schulbetrieb Jahr für

Escuela Lyoness. She has set ambitious goals of
making the school the best in the entire country.
Doris Eggenberger is well travelled around the world. After growing
up in Buchs in the Canton of St. Gallen she worked for 22 years at various
airlines. One of her many trips took her to Honduras. That was
1985. Back then she was given the opportunity to spend one night
with two medical students in the ER of the University Hospital in Tegucigalpa.
“The lack of health care and the need of the patients that I experienced
that night changed my life”, explained Eggenberger. This
gave rise to her dream of setting up a hospital, a dream that eventually
became reality: in June 2000 the
“Medical Center La Ceiba” opened
its doors, an institution she has supervised
personally ever since.
Ten years later, Doris Eggenberger
got to know the representatives of the
Child & Family Foundation. When she
found out that the CFF wanted to
set up its first Lyoness Foundation
School in Honduras, she was immediately
enthralled and got fully behind
the project. “The fact I was then
appointed head teacher of the
school is a particular honour for
me”, she admits. “I put my heart and soul into this project and want
to be here for as long as possible.”
As the head teacher of the Escuela Lyoness in La Ceiba she has
one overarching objective: to provide the 60 pupils who began their
first school year last autumn with a comprehensive and sound education.
The educational concept put together by CFF, the Lyoness
Education Program, will be a great help in this respect. “We will be
expanding and optimising the running of the school every year to

„Ich bin nicht aus der Schweiz ausgewandert, weil es mir dort nicht
mehr gefallen hat, sondern um etwas in Honduras aufzubauen“, versichert
sie. „So bin ich meistens zweimal im Jahr in der Schweiz, und das
Schönste ist, dass ich hier und dort zuhause bin.“
Doris Eggenberger hat in Honduras eine
neue Aufgabe gefunden: Vormittags koordiniert
sie als Direktorin den Schulbetrieb der
Escuela Lyoness, am Nachmittag erledigt sie
ihre Arbeiten im Spital, das sie im Jahr 2000
gegründet hat.

verve and energy from the gratitude of those affected by the school.
The friendly hugs from the people she supports, the happy faces of
the children, the joy and the willingness of the helpers to do something
good – this all motivates her to provide even more help and
support.
Doris has never lost her connections with her homeland. “I
didn’t emigrate from Switzerland because I didn’t like where I was, I
came to Honduras to build something special”, she assures us. “I
generally travel back to Switzerland twice a year, and the best thing
is that I feel equally at home both here and there.”

Bis zur Eröffnung am 2. August
2012 erhielt die Schule eine
Rundumerneuerung: Das gesamte
Gelände wurde renoviert, Neubauten
bieten Platz für zusätzliche
Räumlichkeiten, und Schüler wie Lehrer
dürfen sich über eine brandneue
Schuleinrichtung freuen.
So wurden die 16 Klassenzimmer, die Hauswirtschaftsräume und
die Schulklinik mit neuen Sesseln, Deckenventilatoren, großen Fenstern
und elektrischem Licht versorgt. Außerdem wurde die desolate
Kantine abgerissen und von Grund auf erneuert. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit
galt dem Anlegen des kleinen Parks, denn hier können die
Schüler ihre Pausen von nun an inmitten der grünen Naturkulisse
genießen. Die Lehrer verbringen die Pausen währenddessen im renovierten
Konferenzzimmer. Die komplett erneuerte Theaterbühne ist
das Glanzstück der Renovierung und bietet den jungen Schauspielern
ausreichend Platz sowie eine entsprechende Beleuchtung für Aufführungen.
Lyoness CEO Hubert Freidl, zahlreiche Lyoness Führungskräfte
sowie Mitglieder des Presidents Team feierten die Neueröffnung in
großem Rahmen. Darunter auch der Ungar Antal Gergics, der als
erstes Lyoness Premium-Mitglied das Karriere-Level 8 erreicht hat
und dem die renovierte San Roque Elementary School gewidmet
wurde. Ein besonderes Unterhaltungsprogramm boten die Schüler,
die traditionelle philippinische Lieder sangen und dazu tanzten. Als
Überraschungsgeschenk für einen optimalen Schulstart erhielt jedes
der knapp 400 Kinder ein School Starter Kit der CFF.
Doch mit der abgeschlossenen Renovierung ist das Projekt noch
nicht zu Ende: In den nächsten Monaten wird noch an der Infrastruktur
und am Bildungsangebot an der Schule gearbeitet. Zusätzlich wird
ein Schulungsangebot für die Lehrer initiiert.

refurbished by the time it re-opened on 2 August
2012: the entire grounds were renovated,
new buildings now provide space for additional
rooms, and both the pupils and the
teachers can look forward to working with
brand-new equipment and materials.
For example, the 16 classrooms, the utility
rooms and the school clinic were supplied with new chairs, ceiling
fans, large windows and electric lighting. The dilapidated canteen was
also pulled down and reconstructed from scratch. Particular attention
was paid to designing the small park as this is where the pupils will now
be able to enjoy their breaks in the middle of a natural green area. The
teachers, meanwhile, will spend their intervals in the renovated conference
room. The completely reconstructed theatre stage is the highlight
of the renovation project, offering young actors and actresses an optimal
amount of space and proper lighting for performances.
Lyoness CEO Hubert Freidl, many Lyoness managers and members
of the President’s Team celebrated the re-opening of the school in
fine style. They included Antal Gergics from Hungary, the first Lyoness
Premium member to reach career level 8 and to whom the newly renovated
San Roque Elementary School was dedicated. The pupils put on
a fantastic programme of entertainment, singing traditional Philippine
songs accompanied by dances. Each one of the almost 400 children
received a surprise present of a CFF School Starter Kit to make sure
their first days back are perfect.
However, the end to the renovation does not mean the whole project
is completed: over the coming months, work will continue on the infrastructure
and on the curriculum offered by the school. Training
courses will also be offered for teachers.

Frederick Akhelumele, geborener Nigerianer und Mathematiklehrer,
hat sich seinen Traum erfüllt: 2005 eröffnete er in
Uromi im Süden Nigerias eine Schule für Kinder aus ärmlichen
Verhältnissen. Bedarf dafür gibt es in Nigeria zur Genüge. Die
Schulen des bevölkerungsreichsten afrikanischen Landes sind oft in
einem schlechten Zustand, und viele Kinder können nicht zur Schule
gehen, weil sie arbeiten müssen, um ihre Familien finanziell zu unterstützen.
Unter der Leitung von Frederick Akhelumele werden in der
Gesamtschule mittlerweile rund 1.000 Schüler unterrichtet; sie alle
stammen aus teils stark verarmten Regionen rund um Uromi. Zum
ausgezeichneten Ruf der Schule hat auch der einzigartige Lehrplan
beigetragen: Die knapp 50 einheimischen Lehrer unterrichten nach
westafrikanischem Lehrplan, der durch österreichische Standards wie
Anwesenheitspflicht und einen Förderunterricht für schwächere
Schüler ergänzt wird.
Die Renovierung schreitet rasch voran
Im Mai 2012 hat sich die CFF der Schule angenommen und mit Renovierungsarbeiten
an den fünf existierenden Gebäuden begonnen. Ein
Teil der geplanten Schutzmauer ist vollendet, die Fundamente der
Sanitäreinrichtungen sind gelegt, und die Grundmauern der Multi-
Purpose Hall stehen bereits. In dieser Multifunktionshalle können in
Zukunft Abschlussprüfungen und offizielle Schulveranstaltungen
abgewickelt werden. Darüber hinaus wird sie neben einer Bibliothek
auch diverse Labore für den naturwissenschaftlichen Unterricht beherbergen.
„Wenn alles nach Plan läuft, können die Arbeiten bis Ende
des Jahres abgeschlossen werden“, verrät Frederick Akhelumele, der es
kaum erwarten kann, seinen Schülern ein noch besseres Lernumfeld
bieten zu können.
Frederick Akhelumele, a maths teacher born in Nigeria, fulfilled
his dream: in 2005 he opened a school in Uromi in
southern Nigeria for children from poor backgrounds, and
there is certainly a great need for this in Nigeria. The schools
in this the most populous country in Africa are often in a bad
state of repair, and many children are unable to attend school
because they have to work in order to provide financial support
for their families.
Under the leadership of Frederick Akhelumele the school
now educates roughly 1,000 pupils; all of them come from
the regions around Uromi, some of which are extremely poor.
The unique curriculum has contributed to the excellent reputation
of the school: the almost 50 local teachers organise
their classes according to a Western African curriculum,
which has been supplemented by certain Austrian standards
regarding obligatory attendance and remedial teaching for
weaker pupils.
Renovation making rapid progress
The CFF took the school on in May 2012 and began renovating
the five existing buildings. Part of the planned protective
wall has been completed, the plumbing foundations have
been laid and the walls of the Multi-Purpose Hall are already
standing. In the future, this Multi-Purpose Hall will be able to
accommodate end-of-year exams and official school events.
Furthermore, alongside a library it will also provide space for
various natural science laboratories. “If everything goes to
plan the work will be completed by the end of the year”, explained
Frederick Akhelumele, who can barely wait to offer
his pupils an even better learning environment.

In the Nigerian city of Jos the CFF is supporting the
running of a small school for children in need – a place of
hope in a city of violence.

Seit mehr als zehn Jahren wird Jos von schweren Unruhen
erschüttert. Der Konflikt zwischen Christen und Moslems
entflammt in der 860.000-Einwohner-Stadt im Herzen
Nigerias immer wieder aufs Neue. Durch die eskalierende Gewalt bekommen
die Kinder in Jos Armut, Krankheit und mangelnde Bildung
stärker zu spüren denn je. Ein Grund mehr für Amina Zwindila, ihr
ambitioniertes Hilfsprojekt voranzutreiben.
Vor vier Jahren beschloss die Nigerianerin, eine Schule für arme
und schutzbedürftige Kinder zu gründen. Während sie noch an der
Universität in Jos studierte, begann sie, heimische Früchte und Säfte
zu verkaufen. Mit dem Erlös mietete sie ein kleines Gebäude am Rande
der Stadt und richtete darin mit großem Einsatz einen Kindergarten
und eine Schule ein, deren Besuch für die Kinder kostenfrei ist.
Auch den Eltern ihrer Schützlinge bietet Amina Zwindila Unterstützung
an. Mehrmals wöchentlich veranstaltet sie Informationsabende,
um vor allem die Mütter zu beraten und bei ihnen das Bewusstsein
dafür zu stärken, dass Bildung die Zukunft ihrer Kinder sichert.
Zurzeit werden in der Amina Zwindila Foundation School 78 Kinder
unterrichtet. Um den Fortbestand und stetigen Ausbau der Schule
zu gewährleisten, fördert die Lyoness Child & Family Foundation
dieses Projekt. Mit ihrem Engagement hat Amina bereits viel bewegt.
Mit der CFF als Projektpartner kann sie in Zukunft vielen weiteren
notleidenden Kindern in Jos eine Bildungsmöglichkeit eröffnen und
ihnen dadurch die Chance auf eine bessere Zukunft geben.

For more than ten years, Jos has been shaken by severe unrest,
as conflicts between Christians and Muslims flare up again and
again in this city of 860,000 people in the heart of Nigeria. This escalating
violence is exposing the children in Jos to poverty, illness
and a lack of education more than ever before. This is just one more
reason for Amina Zwindila to push forward with her ambitious aid
project.
Four years ago this Nigerian woman decided to set up a school
for poor and needy children. While she was still studying at university
in Jos, she began to sell local fruits and juices. Using these proceeds
she rented a small building at the edge of the city and thanks
to her dedicated work she managed to set up a nursery and a
school, which are free for the children to attend. And Amina Zwindil
also supports the parents of her pupils. Several times a week she
organises information evenings, principally to advise mothers
and raise their awareness about how education is the key to their
children’s future.
78 children are now taught at the Amina Zwindila Foundation
School. The Lyoness Child & Family Foundation is supporting this
project to secure the future and expansion of the school. Amina has
achieved a great deal with her commitment, and now with the CFF
on-board as a project partner she can offer education to many more
children in need in Jos in the future, giving them a chance to secure
a better future.

In Dramatik ist die Geschichte Nigerias nicht zu überbieten, und
wenn man vom Land der Extreme spricht, trifft das nicht nur auf
seine Natur mit saftigen grünen Ebenen und unbewohnbaren
Wüs ten zu. Jeder sechste bis siebte Afrikaner ist Nigerianer – und wenn
man sich nur die absoluten Zahlen in den Statistiken ansieht, dann
könnte man glauben, dass die mehr als 150 Millionen Menschen des
bevölkerungsreichsten Landes des Kontinents ein verhältnismäßig angenehmes
Leben führen.
Die Realität sieht anders aus: Mit dem Reichtum an Erdöl und der
massiven Ausbeutung dieses Rohstoffs seit den Siebzigerjahren hat es
nur wenige Gewinner gegeben. Und diese sitzen heute oft im Ausland.
Anstatt die Erlöse im eigenen Land nachhaltig in Bildung und Infrastruktur
zu investieren, blüht seit den späten Siebzigern die Korruption,
und die Armut trifft immer größere Bevölkerungsschichten. Der Reichtum
ist – extrem wie in keinem anderen afrikanischen Staat – nur bei
einem Bruchteil der Gesellschaft zu finden. Daran hat auch das Ende
der Militärdiktatur nichts geändert.
Schichtarbeit statt Schule
Dabei ist Nigeria der sechstgrößte Exporteur von Erdöl weltweit. Die
Stimme des Landes innerhalb der OPEC ist von Gewicht, und die Einnahmen
aus dem Öl sind für 80 Prozent der Staatseinnahmen verantwortlich.
Doch auch mehr als 20 Jahre nach Ende der Militärdiktatur
fließt mehr Geld in die Armee als in das Bildungssystem. Und weil die
Lehrer schlecht bezahlt werden, sind sie oft nicht motiviert – und müssen
mit einem weiteren Job ihre Familie ernähren. Hinzu kommt, dass
die Regierung oft monatelang die Gehälter nicht bezahlt und die Schulen
komplett geschlossen werden. Für Hilfsorganisationen – und auch
für die Child & Family Foundation – Grund genug, um Schulen aufzubauen
und ein Unterrichtssystem zu installieren.
Obwohl die gesetzliche Schulpflicht eigentlich bis zum 15. Lebensjahr
dauert, müssen viele Kinder mit 13 Jahren schon arbeiten – entweder
auf den Ölfeldern oder, neuerdings, in den Diamantenminen, die in

It’s difficult to beat the history of Nigeria when it comes to drama,
and if we’re talking about a country of extremes this applies not only
to its natural environment with lush, green plains and uninhabitable
deserts. One in every six or seven Africans is a Nigerian – and if we
only take a look at the absolute figures in the statistics we could be
forgiven for thinking that the more than 150 million people in the most
populous country of the continent lead a relatively comfortable life.
The reality though, is somewhat different: following the discovery
of oil and the extraction of this resource on a massive scale since the
1970s there have been few winners, and they often reside abroad. Instead
of investing the proceeds sustainably in education and infrastructure
in Nigeria, corruption has been rife since the late 1970s, exposing
ever greater sections of the population to poverty. The wealth
is shared among a very small fraction of society – to an extent not
seen in any other African country. And nothing changed following the
end of the military dictatorship either.
Shifts instead of school
Nigeria has become the sixth largest exporter of oil in the world. The
country exerts significant influence within OPEC and the proceeds
from selling oil account for 80 percent of the country’s revenue flow.
But now, even after more than 20 years have elapsed since the end of
the military dictatorship, more money is channelled into the army than
into the education system. And since teachers are poorly paid they often
lack motivation – and have to take on another job to support their
family. What is more, the government is frequently months late in paying
salaries, and schools are shut down completely. This is reason
enough for aid organisations – and the Child & Family Foundation
– to build schools and set up an education system.
Although compulsory school education should last until the
age of 15, many children have to start working from the age of 13
– either on the oil fields, or, more recently, in the diamond mines
discovered in the late 1990s. Yet once again it is not the population
that benefits from this wealth of natural resources. Quite the contrary

irgendwie, so schreibt der Nigeria-Experte Heinrich Bergstresser in seinem
Buch „Macht und Ohnmacht am Golf von Guinea“, glauben die
Menschen daran, dass Gott oder Allah es schon „irgendwie“ richten
wird. Gott oder Allah? Moslems und Christen halten sich in Nigeria in
etwa die Waage, in jüngster Zeit flammen auch religiöse Konflikte auf.
Dennoch sieht Nigerias Zukunft durchaus positiv aus, das 150-Millionen-Land
kann auf die größte afrikanische Diaspora der Welt blicken:
Nigerianer leben in westlichen Demokratien, arbeiten als anerkannte
Mediziner oder produzieren illustre Filme für das Kino, „made in Nollywood“,
wie die nigerianische Filmhochburg genannt wird. Und alle
miteinander haben sie ihre Wurzeln nicht vergessen – und wie es momentan
aussieht, wird das Land der Extreme nicht von innen, sondern
von außen erneuert.

Films made in “Nollywood”
The Niger Delta, formerly one of the largest biotopes in the world with
an extremely wide range of species, has been contaminated by the
extraction of oil. Although this should lead to an increase in prosperity,
the number of people in Nigeria with access to clean drinking water is
steadily falling. The environmental organisation of the United Nations
reckons the environmental damage represents a severe threat to
more than one million Nigerians. Rehabilitating the worst contaminated
areas would take 25 years and cost one billion US dollars. But
somehow, writes Nigeria expert Heinrich Bergstresser in his book
“Power and Impotence in the Gulf of Guinea”, people believe that
God or Allah will “somehow” straighten things out. God or Allah?
There are roughly the same numbers of Muslims and Christians in Nigeria,
and recently there has also been a flare up of religious conflicts.
Nonetheless, Nigeria’s future seems altogether positive, this
country of 150 million people has the largest African diaspora in the
world: Nigerians live in western democracies, work as reputed doctors
or produce outstanding films for the big screen, “made in Nollywood”,
as the Nigerian film stronghold is known. And all and sundry have not
forgotten their roots – as it stands just now, the land of the extremes is
not being renewed from the inside, but from the outside.

XO-Laptops für die Ecole
Robespierre in Saint-Denis
Gemeinsam mit der Child & Family Foundation realisiert
OLPC Frankreich ein Projekt in der französischen Schule
Robespierre in Saint-Denis. 50 XO-Laptops stehen dabei im Fokus.
Der Pariser Vorort Saint-Denis ist seit 2005 nicht nur wegen
seiner kulturgeschichtlichen Denkmäler bekannt. Als
sozialer Brennpunkt mit einer Kriminalitätsrate von über
35 Prozent, Krawallen und Unruhen gehört er nicht gerade zu den
bevorzugten Wohngegenden von Paris. Die dort ansässige Schule
Robespierre spiegelt als sozialer Treffpunkt die täglichen
Probleme wider: Schulklassen mit extrem hohem Ausländeranteil,
Kinder aus desolaten Familienverhältnissen, Jugendliche
ohne Zukunftsperspektive.
Das Recht auf Bildung
Gerade diese Missstände waren es, die die Child & Family
Foundation zum Handeln animierten. Gemeinsam
mit OLPC Frankreich stellte die CFF den Kindern und
Jugendlichen der Schule Ecole Robespierre 50 XO-
Laptops zur Verfügung. Der
XO-1 der Initiative „One Laptop
Per Child“ (kurz OLPC) ist
ein robuster und speziell auf Kinderbedürfnisse
angepasster Laptop, der
für den Einsatz im Schulunterricht, insbesondere
in Entwicklungs- und Schwellenländern, vorgesehen ist. Der Laptop
wird im Unterricht in der Schule Robespierre sowohl als neues
Kommunikationsmittel als auch als integriertes Medium verwendet:
Schüler erleben neben einem virtuellen Leseerlebnis auch einen innovativen
Mathematik- und Geometrieunterricht.
Nach ersten Ergebnissen fördern die XO-Laptops neben der
sozia len Kompetenz, etwa durch die spontane Bildung von Lernteams,
auch die Konzentration der kleinen Anwender. Die Kinder und Jugendlichen
sind restlos begeistert von der neuen Art des Wissenstransfers,
sodass nun nach einer Möglichkeit gesucht wird, den Schülern
auch in den Sommerferien den Lernspaß mit den XO-Laptops zu
ermöglichen.
XO laptops for Robespierre
School in Saint-Denis
Together with the Child & Family Foundation,
OLPC France is carrying out a project in the French
school of Robespierre in Saint-Denis involving 50
XO laptops.
The Parisian suburb of Saint-Denis has been renowned since
2005 not just because of its monuments of cultural history. As a
social hotspot with a crime rate of more than 35 percent, riots
and unrest, it is not exactly one of the preferred residential areas
of Paris. Robespierre, one of the local
schools, is tackling the problems head-on
as a social meeting point: school classes
with an extremely high proportion of foreigners,
children from neglected family
backgrounds and young people with no future
prospects.
The right to education
It was these very grievances that prompted
the Child & Family Foundation to take action.
Together with OLPC France the CFF provided
the children and teenagers of Robespierre
school with 50 XO laptops. The XO-1
of the “One Laptop Per Child” initiative
(OLPC for short) is a robust laptop specifically designed
with children’s needs in mind, which can be used for school education,
especially in developing and emerging countries. The
laptop is used for teaching at Robespierre school both as a new
means of communications and as an integrated medium:
alongside a virtual reading experience, pupils experience innovative
ways of teaching maths and geometry.
According to early findings, the XO laptops promote not
only social skills but also improve the concentration of the
young users with spontaneous learning groups for example.
The kids and teenagers are extremely enthusiastic about this
new way of learning, so much so that efforts are currently underway
to enable them to keep learning with the XO laptops in
the summer holidays.

Ein neues Zuhause für
Kinder A New Home
for Children
In der philippinischen Gemeinde Padre Burgos unterstützt
die CFF ein Kinderdorf, in dem mehr als 90 Sozialwaisen
Zuflucht finden.
Padre Burgos ist ein Dorf auf der Insel Leyte und liegt etwa
1.100 Kilometer südöstlich der Hauptstadt Manila. Fernab
vom Bildungs- und Lebensstandard der Großstadt wachsen
immer mehr Kinder in Familien auf, die sich nicht ausreichend um
ihren Nachwuchs kümmern können. Zumeist fehlen finanzielle Mittel
für Bildung; zwar können die Schulen kostenlos besucht werden,
doch nur wenige Familien können sich Schulbücher leisten. Auch für
grundlegende Bedürfnisse wie Kleidung und Lebensmittel fehlt oftmals

gelegenen Schulen zu ermöglichen. Das Dorf besteht aus 11 Häusern,
die Platz für derzeit über 90 Kinder bieten und jeweils von einer eigenen
Hausmutter betreut werden. Der Alltag ist gekennzeichnet von
gemeinsamem Kochen, Essen und regelmäßigem Schulunterricht.
Die Child & Family Foundation unterstützt das Kinderdorf bei der
Instandhaltung der Gebäude und stellt Güter des täglichen Bedarfs

In the Philippine community of Padre Burgos the
CFF is supporting a Children’s Village providing
refuge for more than 90 social orphans.
Padre Burgos is a village on the island of Leyte, some 1,100 kilometres
south-east of the capital city Manila. Far away from the education
and living standards of the capital, an increasing number of
children are growing up in families that cannot take proper care of
them. Most of the time they cannot afford education; although attending
the schools is free, only a few families have the means to
buy school books. And the necessary money is also often lacking for
basic necessities such as clothing and food.
The Children’s Village in the community of Padre Burgos with its
7,000 inhabitants was built in 1986 by the KinderHilfe Philippinen
e.V. organisation to satisfy the basic daily needs of children at risk
and those from socially disadvantaged backgrounds, and enable
them to visit nearby schools. The village comprises eleven
houses which provide accommodation for more than
90 children just now, and each of the houses has its own
“house-mother”. Everyday life for the kids involves cooking
and eating together as well as enjoying regular school
education.
The Child & Family Foundation is supporting the Children’s
Village by helping to maintain the buildings and providing
supplies for both the houses and the school.

Ziel bestimmt nicht zu hoch gesteckt.

tailored products are sold in the project shop in the village, and the proceeds
are used to support the women and their families. “The CFF is
now helping to expand the areas of sales, organisation, marketing and
product design, so that the project can develop into a sustainable and
independent organisation in two to three years’ time”, explains CFF Director
Nina Passegger. And just looking at the colourful bags and other
products made so enthusiastically by the women of Parajuru, this is certainly
not an unrealistic objective.

Strasser hat sein großes Ziel, die Titelverteidigung beim
Race Across America 2012, nur knapp verpasst. Nach
etwas weniger als neun Tagen passierte der Botschafter
der CFF als Zweiter die Ziellinie in Annapolis.

just missed out on achieving his ambitious goal of defending
his title in the Race Across America 2012. After
somewhat less than nine days, the CFF Ambassador
crossed the finishing line in Annapolis in second place.

Einmal quer durch die USA: Bereits zum dritten
Mal nach 2009 und 2011 bestritt Christoph Strasser
das Race Across America. Wie schon im Vorjahr
trieben ihn die Lyoness Mitglieder, die ihn über
Posts auf Twitter und Facebook motivierten, zu
Höchstleistungen an.

Strasser completed the Race Across America for the
third time. Just like last year, he was driven on to achieve
this fantastic result by Lyoness members, who sent motivating
posts via Twitter and Facebook.

So spannend wie noch nie: Trotz anfänglicher
Magenprobleme, sengender Hitze
und gefährlicher Tornados lieferte sich
Strasser ein spektakuläres Kopf-an-Kopf-
Rennen mit dem Schweizer Reto Schoch.
Am Ende musste er sich dem Rookie nur
knapp geschlagen geben.

stomach complaints, scorching heat and dangerous
tornados, Strasser raced neck-and-neck with
Swiss rider Reto Schoch. But in the end he had to
admit defeat to the outstanding rookie.

Auch dieses Jahr lieferte sich Christoph Strasser
beim Race Across America (RAAM) wieder ein
unglaubliches Duell mit den weltweit besten Extremradsportlern.
Das dafür notwendige Selbstvertrauen hatte
er sich bereits Anfang Mai beim Race Around Slovenia geholt,
das er mit klarer Bestzeit gewonnen hatte.
Ein Rennen mit Höhen und Tiefen
Der Botschafter der CFF reiste bereits einige Tage vor dem Start
des RAAM 2012 in den USA an, um sich vor Ort an die hohen Temperaturen
von bis zu 40 Grad Celsius zu gewöhnen. Dennoch machten
die sengende Hitze und Magenprobleme dem Extremsportler zu
Beginn des Rennens erheblich zu schaffen. Doch dank seines eisernen
Willens konnte Strasser seine Leistungen aus der monatelangen
Vorbereitungs- und Trainingszeit
abrufen. Dazu kam noch tatkräftige
Unterstützung seitens der
Child & Family Foundation und
zahlreicher Lyoness Mitglieder, die
dem Österreicher mit motivierenden
Posts auf Twitter und Facebook
den Rücken stärkten. Dabei
wurden die drei originellsten Posts
wie im vergangenen Jahr mit
einem Lyoness Geschenk belohnt:
einem T-Shirt der CFF, handsigniert
von Strasser und seinem
Team.
Nach einem packenden Kopf-an-Kopf-Rennen mit zahlreichen
Führungswechseln fuhr der Titelverteidiger hinter dem
Schweizer Reto Schoch auf den hervorragenden zweiten Platz.
„Es war ein hochklassiges, spannendes Duell mit knappen,
teilweise nur einminütigen Abständen“, meinte ein völlig
erschöpfter Strasser nach der Zieleinfahrt. Der faire Verlierer
zollte Schoch großen Respekt und gratulierte dem Rookie zu
seiner Leistung.

hat Christoph Strasser einmal mehr den Charity-Gedanken
„Bildung. Chancen. Zukunft.“ über fast 5.000 Kilometer
quer durch die USA getragen. Sein Vorhaben, auf benachteiligte

Platzes ein voller Erfolg.
Race Across America
This year, Christoph Strasser was once again locked in an
amazing battle with the world’s best extreme cyclists in the
Race Across America (RAAM). Winning the Race Around Slovenia
in early May in what was easily his best time gave him the
self-confidence that is so crucial for the RAAM.
A race of ups and downs
The CFF Ambassador travelled to the USA a few days before
the start of the RAAM 2012 to acclimatise to the high local
temperatures of up to 40 degrees Celsius. However, Strasser
was still bothered at the beginning of the race by the scorching
heat and stomach problems. But his will of iron meant that he
was able to call upon his months of preparatory and training
work. And he also enjoyed energetic support from the Child &
Family Foundation
and many Lyoness
members, who
pushed on the Austrian
sportsman with
messages of motivation
posted on Twitter
and Facebook.
And just like last
year, the three most
original posts were
rewarded with a
small Lyoness gift: a
CFF t-shirt, signed
by Strasser and his team.
After a gripping neck and neck race with the lead changing
many times, the title holder eventually crossed the line in second
place behind Swiss racer Reto Schoch, a marvellous result.
“It was a superb and exciting duel with only short stops, sometimes
for just a minute”, said a completely exhausted Strasser
after finishing the race. Always fair in defeat, Strasser had the
utmost respect for Schoch and congratulated the rookie on his
performance.
As an Ambassador for the Lyoness Child & Family Foundation,
Christoph Strasser once again took the charity message of
“Education. Chances. Future.” almost 5,000 kilometres across
the USA. Thus in spite of finishing in second place, his goal of
raising awareness about disadvantaged children and doing
something for them was a resounding success.

Gemeinsam mit Lyoness veranstaltete die CFF am 23. Juni
2012 ihren ersten Lyoness Kinderflugtag in Graz, um
benachteiligten Kindern und Jugendlichen den Traum
vom Fliegen zu erfüllen. Schauplatz war das Segelfliegergelände am
Flug hafen Graz. Das Veranstaltungsareal und mehrere Kleinflugzeuge
wurden der CFF für diesen besonderen Tag zur Verfügung gestellt.
Darüber hinaus erklärten sich zahlreiche Piloten bereit, den Charity-
Event zu unterstützen. Für die Verpflegung aller Beteiligten sorgte das
Lyoness Partnerunternehmen „Clocktower“ aus Graz.
Der erste Lyoness Kinderflugtag war ein voller Erfolg. Über 200
Kinder und Jugendliche verschiedener karitativer Organisationen
fanden sich am Flughafengelände ein und konnten neben den Rundflügen
auch ein abwechslungsreiches Rahmenprogramm erleben –
vom Bungee-Run über zwei Hüpfburgen bis hin zu einem OLPC-
Stand (One Laptop Per Child), wo sie sich mit multimedialen Lernmöglichkeiten
vertraut machen konnten.
Die Kinder waren begeistert. Sie alle haben einen unvergesslichen
Tag erlebt, der sie Sorgen, Krankheit oder Trennungen zumindest für
kurze Zeit vergessen ließ.
„Fly for Kids“ in Hohenems
Die CFF hat es sich nicht nehmen lassen, den Kinderflugtag im vorarlbergischen
Hohenems zum zweiten Mal zu unterstützen. Für den
10. Juli stellte sie ein Flugzeug zur Verfügung und organisierte einen
Malstand, damit die Kinder vor Ort ihre eigenen T-Shirts gestalten
konnten. Dank der CFF und dem Team des Flugplatzes Hohenems
hatten rund 500 sozial und körperlich benachteiligte Kinder die Möglichkeit,
eine Auszeit zu erleben und sich den großen Wunsch eines
Rundflugs zu erfüllen.

In conjunction with Lyoness the CFF held its first Lyoness Children
Flying Day on 23 June 2012 in Graz to give disadvantaged
children and young people the chance to fulfil their dream of flying.
The venue was the gliding area at Graz airport, which was
made available for the CFF along with several small planes on this
very special day. Furthermore, many pilots agreed to support the
charity event too. Lyoness loyalty partner “Clocktower” from Graz
made sure that everyone was well taken care of.
The first Lyoness Children Flying Day was a resounding success.
More than 200 children and young people from various
charity organisations made their way to the gliding area, and besides
a sightseeing flight were also able to enjoy a varied programme
of activities – including bungee running, two bouncy castles
and an OLPC stand (One Laptop Per Child), where children
and young people were able to find out more about multimedia
learning.
The children were extremely enthusiastic: they enjoyed an unforgettable
day, which allowed them to forget their worries, illnesses
or being separated from families, at least for a short time.
“Fly for Kids” in Hohenems
The CFF took full advantage of the opportunity to support the “Fly
for Kids” event in Hohenems, Vorarlberg for the second time. For
the event on 10 July the CFF provided a plane and organised a
painting stand so that the kids could design their own t-shirts.
Thanks to the CFF and the team at Hohenems airport, roughly
500 children with physical disabilities or from socially disadvantaged
backgrounds were able to take some time-out and fulfil
their dream of a sightseeing flight.

In keeping with the launch of the new design for the Child & Family Foundation we now
also have a brand-new merchandising collection bearing the new look of the CFF.
Colourful t-shirts with various prints, caps, bags and the Lyco entertainment
products for children are both fun and useful, not to mention trendy. The
Lyoness community reached a collective decision after playing its part in creating
the designs for the new products on the CFF Facebook page.
The greatest priority for CFF is the welfare of people
in need. This is why all of the proceeds from the
sale of the merchandising articles go straight to
helping projects of the Foundation. It’s never been
this easy to help!
