Nach sieben Europa-Schauen
werden die International Shetland
Pony Games in diesem Jahr erstmals
international ausgeschrieben und
es ist eine Ehre für unser Land, dass dieses
bedeutende Ereignis im Landgestüt
Redefi n veranstaltet wird. Der Verband der
Pferdezüchter Mecklenburg-Vorpommern e.V.
und die ihm angeschlossene Rasseinteressengemeinschaft
der Shetlandponyzüchter haben
die Veranstaltung organisiert und es ist mir eine
besondere Freude, die Schirmherrschaft inne zu
haben. Für alle Freunde des Shetlandponys stellen
die Games in züchterischer und in sportlicher Hinsicht einen Höhepunkt dar.

Die Shetland Pony Stud-Book Society wurde 1890 gegründet und ist damit die
älteste Zuchtorganisation für britische Ponyrassen. Das Shetlandpony ist in der
ganzen Welt verbreitet. In Deutschland leben etwa 3.500 eingetragene Tiere,
in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern sind es 192 Stuten und 42 Hengste. Damit stellen
die Shetlandponys in Deutschland und in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern nach den
Hafl ingern und den Deutschen Reitponys die drittstärkste Ponypopulation.
Das Shetlandpony ist als Rasse überaus geeignet, Kinder an das Pferd und den
Pferdesport heran zu führen. Zudem fi ndet es häufi g im therapeutischen Reiten
Verwendung. Daher verwundert es auch nicht, dass zahlreiche Wettbewerbe
dieses Events speziell für Kinder ausgeschrieben sind.
Die Rasseninteressengemeinschaft Shetland war gemeinsam mit der IG der
Hafl inger die erste, die 1994 innerhalb unseres Landesverbandes gegründet
wurde und bis heute sehr aktiv ist. Von Beginn an wurde größter Wert auf
Leistungsprüfungen gelegt. Seit 1996 wurden bisher 476 Stuten und Hengste
im Landgestüt Redefi n geprüft, wobei sets ein besonderes Augenmerk auf
die Interieurbewertung gelegt wurde.
Die Eignung für den Umgang mit Kindern stand jederzeit im Vordergrund.
Die Leistungsentwicklung der Popolation unseres Landes fi ndet höchste
Anerkennung in Züchterkreisen, auch über unsere Grenzen hinaus.
Die Silbermedaillen für die Hengste Gordon und O’Neill vom Sidden bei
den letzten European Shetland Pony Games in Schweden zeugen von der
guten Arbeit der Shetlandponyzüchter aus Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
Die Kombination dieser alten Rasse mit dem traditionsreichen Veranstaltungsort
Landgestüt Redefi n hat schon etwas Ehrwürdiges an sich.
Ich bin mir daher sicher, dass sowohl die Teilnehmer als auch alle Zuschauer
auf ihre Kosten kommen werden und wünsche den Shetland Pony Games
2008 viel Erfolg.
After seven European shows, the International Shetland Pony Games will this
year for the fi rst time be internationally tendered, and it is a great honour
for our state that this important event is being hosted in the State Stud at
Redefi n. The Registered Horse Breeders Association Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and
their associated breed syndicate of Shetland Pony breeders have organised the event
with dedication and it is with great pleasure that I hold the patronage. In a breeding
and sporting aspect the Games present a highlight for all friends of Shetland Ponies.
The Shetland Pony Stud-Book Society was founded in 1890 and is therefore the oldest
breeding organisation for British Pony breeds. The Shetland Pony is widespread in the
whole world. In Germany there are about 3.500 registered animals, in Mecklenburg-
Vorpommern there are 192 Mares and 42 Stallions. Therewith, the Shetland Ponies are
the third highest Pony population in Germany and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern after the
Hafl inger and German Riding Ponies.
The Shetland Pony is a breed extremely appropriate to introduce children to horses and
equestrian sport. Furthermore, it can be found often used in therapeutic riding. It is
therefore no surprise that numerous competitions of this event are specifically for
children.
The breed syndicate Shetland, together with the Hafl inger, was in 1994 the fi rst to
be founded within our National Association and are today still very active. From the
beginning, great value was set on performance tests. Since 1996, as yet 476 Mares
and Stallions have been tested in the State Stud at Redefi n, whereupon particular
attention has been made to interior evaluation.
The suitability for contact with children was always in the foreground. The current
development of the population of our country fi nds the highest recognition
in breeder circles, also over our borders. The silver medals for the Stallions
Gordon and O’Neill vom Sidden in the last European Shetland Pony Games in
Sweden are evidence of the good work of the Shetland Pony breeders from
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The combination of this old breed with the richly
traditional venue of the State Stud Redefi n has something dignifi ed in itself.
I am therefore sure, that both the participants and also the spectators will
come at their own expense and I wish the International Shetland Pony
Games much success.
