Selbst gemachtes Gazpacho // Home-made. 1 kg Tomaten, ½ Salatgurke, 2 Paprikaschoten (1 grün, 1 rot) entkernt, 2 Zehen Knoblauch, 1 Zwiebel, 1 Tasse kalte Gemüsesuppe; Olivenöl, Balsamico, Salz, Pfeffer, Chili, Zucker. Gemüse pürieren, Suppe, Essig, Öl und Chili hinzufügen, mit Salz, Pfeffer und Zucker abschmecken. Im Kühlschrank kühlen und auf Eis servieren. // 1 kg tomatoes, ½ cucumber, 2 bell peppers (1 green, 1 red) with seeds removed, 2 cloves of garlic, 1 onion, 1 cup of cold vegetable soup; olive oil, balsamic vinegar, salt, pepper, chilli, sugar. Mash the vegetables, add soup, vinegar, oil and chilli, flavour with salt, pepper and sugar. Man kann der sommerlichen Hitze aber auch durch Kühlung von innen begegnen. Nein, keine gefrosteten Getränke. Diese Art der Kühlung ist sogar eher kontraproduktiv. Wirklich kühlend und den Körper entlastend ist hingegen die richtige Ernährung. Die hat nicht unbedingt etwas mit der Serviertemperatur zu tun, sondern mit den Zutaten und der Art, wie sie verarbeitet werden. (Un-)Vernunft Ein sehr wienerischer Tipp zur kulinarischen Kühlung findet sich auf der Speisekarte, die dem Gast im bezaubernden kleinen Innenhof-Gastgarten des „Mill“ gereicht wird. Klingt unspektakulär, schmeckt spektakulär: die Gurkenkaltschale. Und zum Nachtisch ein bisserl köstliche Unvernunft: das Mojito-Eis der „Gelateria Armando“. Selten war kühl so köstlich. Stay cool // One way of getting cool is to take refuge inside St Stephan’s Cathedral or on the Third Man tour through Vienna’s sewers. Another way of escaping the summer heat is internal cooling. No, not with iced drinks – that kind of cooling is, in fact, counterproductive. But the right kind of food can be very refreshing and relieve stress on the body. Nothing to do with the serving temperature but rather with the ingredients and method of preparation. Cool delights A very Viennese way of using food to cool down can be found on the menu in the enchanting inner courtyard of Mill restaurant. ‘Gurkenkaltschale’, a cold cucumber soup, sounds unspectacular but is delicious. And for dessert why not forget about those calories once in a while and treat yourself to a mojito ice cream from Gelateria Armando. Rarely has cool been so delicious. Die Landeskrone Österreichs, der Österreichische Erzherzogshut aus dem Jahr 1616, ist hier ausgestellt. Die reiche sakrale Sammlung umfasst den beeindruckenden Klosterschatz mit dem „Agnes-Schleier“ aus dem 12. Jahrhundert, zahllose Reliquien und detailreiche Elfenbeinschnitzereien wie „Das Jüngste Gericht“. Einen einmaligen Eindruck der Goldschmiedekunst des 12. Jahrhunderts vermittelt der weltberühmte „Verduner Altar“ in der Leopoldskapelle. Die Stiftsbibliothek ist mit 300.000 Büchern die größte Privatbibliothek Österreichs. The crown of Austria, the ‘Archduke’s Hat’ from the year 1616, is on permanent display here. The rich sacred collection contains impressive monastery treasures including the twelfth-century Veil of Agnes, numerous relics and detailed ivory carvings such as ‘The Last Judgement’. The world-famous Verdun altar in the chapel of St Leopold provides a unique impression of 12th-century goldsmith’s art. The monastery library has 300,000 volumes and is the largest private library in Austria. Fascinating art collection The art collection contains numerous Old Masters including Danube school panel paintings, while the Modern Gallery has works of 20th-century sacred art by the likes of Oskar Kokoschka or Hermann Nitsch as well as young talents like the photo artist Agnes Prammer. There are also four pictures painted by Stiftskustos Nicolaus Buhlmann, Stiftskurator Wolfgang Huber und Abtprimas Propst Bernhard Backovsky eröffneten die „Galerie der Moderne“ Anfang Mai Spannende Kunstsammlung Die Kunstsammlung präsentiert zahlreiche Bilder alter Meister wie etwa die Tafelbilder der Donauschule, in der „Galerie der Moderne“ findet man hingegen Werke zeitgenössischer sakraler Kunst des 20. Jahrhunderts wie Oskar Kokoschka oder Hermann Nitsch, aber auch junge, aufstrebende Talente wie die Fotokünstlerin Agnes Prammer. Auch vier Jugendbilder von Egon Schiele, der hier bei einer Ausstellung im Jahr 1908 erstmals sein Ausnahmetalent unter Beweis stellte, sind zu sehen. An einen Stiftsbesuch Napoleons im Jahr 1805 erinnert das Napoleonzimmer – er kam auch, um Wein zu akquirieren, der schon dazumal einen sehr guten Ruf hatte. Davon kann man sich im Aufregende Touren für Groß und Klein durchs prachtvolle Stift Mittelalterliches Juwel: der Verduner Altar Egon Schiele as a young man; in fact it was at an exhibition here in 1908 that the work of this exceptional talent was shown for the first time. Napoleon’s room recalls a visit by the emperor in 1805, amongst other things to purchase the monastery’s wine, which even in those days enjoyed an excellent reputation and still regularly wins awards – as the well-stocked wine cellar testifies. The monastery vineyard, like the monastery itself, celebrates its 900th anniversary in 2014, making it the oldest vineyard in Austria. Opera is also celebrated every year in the monastery.
