Aluminium reduces the weight of automotive cables.
An increasing number of vehicle manufacturers is forced to move the
battery into the rear of vehicles to improve dynamics and because space
in the engine room is restricted. The power supply cables required because
of this measure, leading from the battery to the front part of the vehicle,
become very heavy when copper conductors are used. This weight can be
clearly reduced by using aluminium conductors.
Although the cross sections of comparable cables have to be increased
e.g. from 95 mm 2 to 150 mm 2 when using aluminium as conductor because
its conducting capacity differs from that of copper, the lower density of aluminium
nevertheless permits us to achieve a weight reduction of approx.
40% if aluminium is used as conductive material instead of copper. LEONI
meets the demand for a weight reduction and has developed cables with
multi-wire aluminium conductors.
Selection of the aluminium alloy has been the most important requirement
for finding a solution that would suit the automotive sector. The
practical knowledge as to how to draw aluminium wires and how to process
them into multi-wire conductors in bunching machines has a long tradition
at LEONI and this has considerably contributed to the fact that the
composition of the conductors had been determined before long and that
they could be manufactured as series products.
Making use of these aluminium cables together with flexible and heatproof
insulating materials, our developers have created cables, which, as
prefabricated parts, need to be subjected to extensive tests.
Special methods which guarantee low transition resistances are used for
the bonding of cables and during tests, the mechanical behaviour of bonded
cables, their corrosion-resistance and the fatigue strength of the aluminium
cables need to be proven.
With these newly developed cables, LEONI wants to contribute to
innovative solutions in the area of vehicle electrical systems. For new
vehicle developments, tailor-made strand structure and insulating material
designs can be made available.
ADR = Accord européen relatif au transport international
des marchandises dangereuses par Route.
Deutsch: Europäisches Übereinkommen über die internationale Beförderung
gefährlicher Güter auf der Straße.
Englisch: European Agreement Concerning the international carriage
of Dangerous goods by Road.
Beim Aufbau
LEONI automotive cables
with ADR/GGVS-approval
With directive 94/55/EC, the EU has committed its member states
to apply the ADR (which only regulates international transportation) both
on a national, intra-community and cross-border basis from the 01.01.97
onwards. This directive creates a standard basis from which the free
movement of goods within the community when transporting hazardous
substances can be controlled.
The ADR regulates all aspects of the transportation of hazardous goods,
e.g.: - classification of materials and articles
- safe packaging
- means of transportation
- execution of transportation
Apart from the requirements that have to be met by any means of transportation,
special requirements are placed on these means of transport.
One area of these special requirements deals with the electrical equipment
of vehicles. The component identification number issued by the Association
of Technical Inspection Agencies (VdTÜV), TÜ.EGG (Technical Inspection.
Electrical equipment. Hazardous substances) documents compliance
with the requirements on electric cables for application in vehicles used
for the transportation of hazardous substances made by the ADR. The ordinance
on the road transportation of hazardous substances (GGVS) contains
the ADR requirements for the national sector. LEONI manufactures
these cables with ADR/GGVS-approval.
The cables are multi-core sheathed cables with different insulating
materials used for cores and sheaths. As a rule, cores are thin-walled insulated
automotive wires and the sheath geometry suits the respective application.
Two new families of electric cables, intended to be used in transportation
units for hazardous substances, have been assessed for
their agreement with the requirements contained in paragraph
9.2.2 ADR and have subsequently been released.
Round cables make up the one group of new cables, while the second
group consists of flat cables. In all cases, cores and sheaths are made of
high-quality PVC materials, which permit thin-walled designs.
All cables with ADR/GGVS-approval manufactured at LEONI meet the
requirements for an area of application ranging from –40 °C to + 90 °C.
The scope of types comprises FLRY in a 2- to 15-core design and FLYYF in a
2-core design.
Two new LEONI product lines have been assessed for their agreement
with the requirements contained in paragraph 9.2.2 ADR by the TÜV
Southern Germany and have subsequently been released.
One of the product lines consists of FLRYY round cables with a 2- to
15-core design. In all cases, cores and sheaths consist of high-quality PVC
materials, which permit thin-walled designs. The second group consists of
FLYYF 2-core flat cables.
All new cables meet the requirements for an area of application ranging
from –40 ° to + 90 °C.
In addition to these new product lines, LEONI has already obtained ADR/
GGVS-approvals for multi-core sheathed cables with thin-walled insulated
PVC-cores and PUR-sheaths. For special requirements, a polypropyleneinsulated
data pair has been integrated in these cables.
Bevor elektrische Produkte in Nordamerika
in jeder Hinsicht erfüllt.
in unserem Produktprogramm. Hierbei handelt es sich um
spezielle H05VV5-F bzw.
LEONI multi-standard cables – one for all
In the course of European harmonisation, the member countries
accepted harmonising documents HD 21 and HD 22, so that
the use of
identified cables became possible without
further national certification.
However, this identification is not sufficient for export to the USA or
Canada. Before electrical products may be introduced to the North American
market, they have to be checked and approved for potential hazards
regarding combustibility, electrocution and in the case of certain devices
also for electromagnetic compatibility. According to the product liability
law, the manufacturer must guarantee by testing and certification of his
product that it meets the national statutory requirements in every respect.
A multi-standard wiring single core complies with the European harmonisation
approval
, the UL approval for the USA and the
CSA approval for Canada. One cable can therefore be used for the entire
European and North American area, thus the most important global markets.
Common harmonised, heat-proof cables such as H05V2 and H07V2 are
modified and, depending on the respective requirements, as a result comply
with styles UL 1007, UL 1011, UL 1015, UL 1028, UL1061 or others as
per arrangement. The cables can also be adapted to the specifications of
CSA types TR 64, T2, TR 32, T1 or TEW.
Standard cross sections for bare or solder-coated strands range from 0.5
mm2 (≅ AWG 20) to 120 mm2 (≅ AWG 4/0), larger cross sections are also
possible on request.
As can be gathered from our two catalogues ”Power lines” and ”UL- and
CSA-approved cables and wires”, our product range also includes shielded
or unshielded multi-core multi-standard PVC-control cables. These are
special H05VV5-F or H05VVC4V5-K cables, which correspond to UL style
2464 and can also be supplied according to the Canadian standard (CSA)
with solder-coated strands. Other combinations between HAR, UL and CSA
for multi-core cables are also possible.
The advantages of a multi-standard cable are obvious. Apart from the
worldwide application possibilities and the connected increase of its economic
efficiency, expenditure for technical documentation and storage is
also reduced.
Firmengeschichte
In Brake werden seit 1960 Fahrzeugleitungen hergestellt. Begonnen
Leitungen GmbH & Co. KG“ (SAL) ausgegliedert. Das damalige
Geschäftsvolumen der SAL betrug ca. 75,0 Mio. DM bei einer Liefermenge
von ca. 1,3 Mio. km Fahrzeugleitungen.
Am 2. Dezember 1999 kaufte die LEONI Kabel GmbH & Co. KG mit
wirtschaftlicher Wirkung zum 30. Sept.
Fahrzeugleitungen:
- Kupfer in to: ca. 9.500
- Kunststoffe in to: ca. 3.700
davon PVC: ca. 3.500
und PP: ca. 200
Die Produktstruktur in 2001 (bezogen auf Liefermenge) ist:
- Einadrige Fahrzeugleitungen: ca. 95 %
100 %
Company history
Since 1960, automotive cables have been manufactured at Brake. Production
had started under the name of ”Vohwinkel Wipperfürth” and – after
the merger with ”Märkische Kabelwerke AG” in 1967 was continued under
the name of ”Bergmann Kabelwerke AG”.
Thanks to development of the automotive business of Siemens, the
share in Bergmann Kabelwerke AG was increased from 49 % (in 1987) to
100 % (from 1991), to consistently carry on developing business in the
automobile supply industry.
In the course of the decision taken by Siemens to part with all cable
plants worldwide, business with automotive cables in Brake was separated
into a different company called ”Siemens Automobiltechnik Leitungen
GmbH & Co. KG” (SAL). SAL‘s volume of business at the time was approx.
75.0 million DM with a delivery quantity of approx. 1.3 million km of automotive
cables.
On 2nd December 1999, LEONI Kabel GmbH & Co. KG bought SAL from
Siemens with commercial effect from 30. September 1999 and integrated
it into the business field ”Automotive and Standard Cables” under the new
name LEONI Automotive Cables GmbH & Co. KG (LAC for short).
Current volume of business and material requirements
The current scope of the annual volume of business has remained virtually
unchanged. Products of a higher quality, such as lead-free PVC and polypropylene
insulated cables increasingly replace conventional lead-containing
PVC cables.
For a delivery quantity of approx. 12 million automotive cables,
LAC processed in 2001:
- Tons of copper: approx. 9,500
- Tons of plastics: approx. 3,700
of that PVC: approx. 3,500
and PP: approx. 200
The product structure in 2001 (referred to delivery quantity) is:
- One-core vehicle cables: approx. 95 %
100 %
- Sheathed cables: approx. 5 %
- Cross sectional area 0.22 to 1.00: approx. 84 %
1.00 to 5.00: approx. 15 % 100 %
5.00 to 25.00: approx. 1 %
Quality management
and environmental management certification
Already from the beginning, while still running under the name of
Siemens, the business with vehicle cables was audited by certification
bodies in accordance with the respectively valid DIN, ISO and VDA standards.
LAC quality management has last been audited and successfully confi
r m e db yt h eDQS in September 2001 in accordance with ISO 9001/2000,
stepped up by ISO/TS 16949.
LAC-environmental management has been audited according to DIN EN
ISO 14001 within the scope of a joint certification of the cable business
unit.
These certifications are an important confirmation of the quality of our
operating processes and process control, which form the basis of our ability
to successfully implement our quality and environmental policy.
The LLB, which has been part of the LEONI group since the beginning
of 2000, has been accredited in 07/2000 and acts as external and internal
service provider. The LLB only carries out tests on order, primarily to achieve
product releases from car manufacturers.
The LLB is impartial and uninfluenceable in its thoughts and actions –
a prerequisite for achieving the accreditation status.
This neutrality has been assured by LEONI AG (management) in a declaration
of impartiality and has been implemented such from an organisational
point of view that it is indeed maintained. The LLB is an independent
central function in the business unit cables, reporting to top management
on central quality management.
Accreditation by the DAP (Deutsches Akkreditierungssystem Prüfwesen
GmbH) has confirmed the technical competence of LLB-staff and the
impartiality and uninfluenceability of the LLB.
The LLB has been accredited by the DAP for more than 160 specifications
and customer regulations in accordance with DIN EN ISO 17025. The scope
of accreditation inter alia includes standards and specifications by the
following vehicle manufacturers:
- DaimlerChrysler
- Volkswagen
Was Sie uns schon
immer mal sagen wollten
What you have
always wanted to tell us
During 2000/2001, the business unit ”Automotive and Standard
Cables” carried out a customer satisfaction analysis.
We would very much like to thank you, our customers, for participating
in this survey. We have already taken some measures and will derive further
consequences from the results so as to be able to meet your requests and
suggestions in the best possible manner. We will also take steps that will
be tailored to individual customers. However, we trust that you will understand
that we cannot immediately take into account all the requests made
by our customers.
The individual assessment criteria made us realize that our strengths
are in particular quality, support during new developments, processing the
mehradrige Fahrzeugleitungen in unserem Werk in Roth aufzubauen.
gute Zusammenarbeit.
delivery of sample cables, drawings and specification sheets and the competence,
support and availability of our office and sales staff.
Our weaknesses you have discovered to be our delivery times, flexibility,
price policy and the meeting of deadlines. From these weaknesses we will
derive our measures.
To be able to reduce our lead times and to extend our capacities, we
are currently establishing a new production area for multi-core automotive
cables in our plant in Roth. Thanks to this new production area, storage
times will be kept short and lead times will be reduced. In addition,
a process-interlinking control room concept will be introduced within the
scope of a supply chain management project. This will ensure more efficient
planning and control of the order flow. Apart from that, LEONI Kabel
has built or expanded various facilities in the Czech Republic, Hungary,
Poland and Turkey. These have been established in the immediate vicinity
of our customers. In this manner, lead times are shortened, while logistics
costs are simultaneously improved. These facilities have been equipped
with new, efficient machinery – our Polish plant has even been equipped
with its own wire drawing shop. Concentrating on standard products at
these plants has facilitated an economical production with high production
speeds. This places LEONI in a position to increase flexibility.
Please keep on supporting us with our surveys, because this is the only
way to discover starting points for an improvement of our service. For the
future, we hope to be able to continue this good cooperation.
