Nejib Belkadhis unheimlicher Dokumentarfilm „VHS-Kahloucha” ist ein Tribut
an die Methode, den Wahnsinn und die Magie des tunesischen Amateurfilmers
Moncef Kahloucha. Der Malermeister aus einer der ärmsten Städte in
der Provinz Sousse und leidenschaftlicher Fan der Filme aus den 1970er
Jahren dreht mit einer S Panasonic 3500, castet Nachbarn und Anwohner,
schreibt Drehbuch und Dialoge, improvisiert Kulissen, Kostüme und die
Werbekampagnen für seine Produkionen. Nach Hits wie „I Had No Money
and Now I‘m Loaded” und „Misery to Get Rid of the Booze” zeigt Belkadhis
Arbeit Kahloucha beim Dreh seines neusten Spielfilms „Tarzan of the Arabs”.
Die Dokumentation feiert die unersättliche, unermüdliche Passion eines
Mannes, der seine Phantasien auf die Leinwand bringen möchte.

Nejib Belkadhi‘s uncanny documentary ”VHS-Kahloucha” delivers tribute to
the method, madness and magic of amateur Tunisian filmmaker Moncef
Kahloucha. A house painter in one of the poorest cities in the province of
Sousse, driven by a passion for 1970s flicks, Kahloucha shoots his features
on a VHS Panasonic 3500, recruiting locals for the cast, authoring script
and dialogue, makeshift set, costumes and advertising campaign. Claiming
such hits as “I Had No Money and Now I‘m Loaded” and “Misery to Get Rid
of the Booze”, Belkadhi’s documentary follows Kahloucha as he shoots his
most recent feature, “Tarzan of the Arabs”. At the heart of the documentary is
a celebration of a man’s insatiable and tireless passion for turning his
fantasies into films.

Omm Hassan möchte nicht alleine reisen und überredet ihre Nachbarin Omm
‘Ali, sie auf dem langen Weg von ihrem Geburtsort al-Mishtai in den Bergen
an der syrischen Küste nach Tell Banat, ein Dorf an der nördlichen Grenze
zum Irak, zu begleiten. Ihr Sohn arbeitet dort als Lehrer an einer staatlichen
Schule. Omm ‘Ali möchte eigentlich nicht fort. Doch am nächsten Tag machen
sich die beiden Frauen auf die Reise in eine ihnen ganz und gar unbekannte
Welt. El-Roumis lange Einstellungen fangen den Zauber der ländlichen
Regionen Syriens ebenso ein, wie die Zärtlichkeit, von der die solidarische
Freundschaft der beiden Nachbarinnen geprägt ist.
Reluctant to travel by herself, Omm Hassan is intent on convincing Omm ‘Ali,
her neighbour, to accompany her on the long travel from al-Mishtai, their
native village on the coastal mountains of Syria, to Tell Banat, a village at the
northern border with Iraq, where her son was dispatched to teach at the
public school. Omm ‘Ali attempts to resist. The next morning the two middleaged
friends set out on a voyage to the end of a world entirely unknown.
El-Roumi’s long pans capture the magic of the Syrian countryside and the
tenderness that coats the solidarity between the two neighbors.
