The Launching of the Addis Ababa Street Children Programme
The former Urban Desk of the then council of the Lutheran
Congregations of Addis Ababa started the Programme in 1974
in co-operation with the Rehabilitation Agency for the Disabled,
a Government ran Humanitarian Agency based in Addis
Ababa. The number of children who were first re-unified was
17. Due to the ever-increasing magnitude of the need, the
number of the target groups and their benefits also started
rising from year to year; besides, the programme also tried to
reach most of the regions, namely, the Amhara National
regional state, the Oromia National regional state and the
Somali National regional state. Consequently, the number of
the beneficiaries has increased from 17 to 1014 now and the
centres have also grown up to 23 at present.
The former Addis Ababa street children, and the present
Family Re-unification Programme is supported financially by
the Marburg-Land Church Circuit. We know that the good
hearted great man Dr. Mommsen is behind this programme
who has approached and won the loving heart of his beloved
