defining fire protection measures in railway vehicles
A number of fires in rail traffic have raised questions about safety in
the minds of both those responsible for the systems and the public.
Even small fires can quickly take on the dimension of a catastrophe
because of the many people being conveyed or large amount of
freight transported, especially if such accidents occur in tunnels.
The most frequent causes of fire are defects in electrical systems or
the negligent setting of fires. Thus, an increasing number of vehicle
manufacturers and transportation companies require that materials
and components used in domestic and international rail traffic fulfil
the requirements of technical specification CEN/TS 45545, which in
Part 2 defines fire safety requirements.

test categories: flame propagation, heat generation, side effects
of fires (flaming droplets or particles), smoke generation (density
and toxicity), toxicity and corrosiveness of conflagration gases and
residues. In the test procedures for CEN/TS 45545, materials and
components are differentiated according to operating and design
classes to determine where they fit within various hazard levels as
predefined in the requirements profile.
