As 2014 marks the 200th anniversary of the death of Johann Friedrich Reichardt, and the
Handel Festival will be paying tribute with a promenade concert in a verdant setting.
Reichardt’s estate has gone down in history as the “home of Romanticism” and is also
known as the “Giebichenstein paradise of poets”. “An irresistible desire for the country and
gardens seized people at that time,” wrote Goethe in 1797. Just as Reichardt would have
wished, this magical evening in the idyllic Botanical Gardens arouses all the senses thanks
to the numerous singers and musicians as well as delicious food.

Ein Sommerabend an Bord: Mit der MS Händel durch das romantische Saaletal mit seinen
vielen Natur- und Kulturschönheiten. Musikalische Genüsse ergänzen die Reise. Historisches
Vorbild hierfür ist Händels Wassermusik, deren Entstehung mit einer Lustfahrt des englischen
Königs Georg I. auf der Themse in Verbindung gebracht wird. Das österreichische
Sonus Brass Ensemble hat sich seit seiner Gründung 1994 zu einem der aktivsten, interessantesten
und innovativsten Blechbläserensembles Österreichs entwickelt. Virtuos, mit großer
Leichtigkeit, schlank und klar spielen sie Bearbeitungen von Händel und Zeitgenossen.
A summer evening on board ship down the romantic Saale Valley with its many natural and
cultural beauty spots on the MS Händel. Rounding out the trip will be some musical
enjoyment. The historical model for this is Handel’s Water Music, which is said to have been
written for a trip down the Thames by England’s King George I. Since its creation in 1994,
the Sonus Brass Ensemble has grown into one of the most active, intriguing and innovative
brass ensembles in Austria. It plays arrangements of music by Handel and his contemporaries
with virtuoso ease, leanness and clarity.

Das berühmte Londoner Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (OAE), das auf historischen
Instrumenten musiziert, arbeitet seit seiner Gründung Mitte der 1980er Jahre ohne festen
Dirigenten. In der Presse wird das Ensemble hoch gelobt. So schrieb ein britischer Kritiker:
„Das OAE ist ganz einfach eines der feinsten Ensembles, das auf historischen Instrumenten
spielt (…) Das Spiel war herrlich raffiniert und übersprudelnd“. Das viel gelobte Orchester
tritt gemeinsam mit der jungen Sopranistin Lucy Crowe und dem Tenor James Gilchrist unter
der Leitung von Steven Devine, der sich auch als Cembalist einen Namen gemacht hat, auf.
Es erklingt u.a. die in Deutschland selten aufgeführte Serenata „Solomon“ von William
Boyce, der 1757 von König Georg II. zum „Master of the King’s Musick“ berufen wurde.
The famous London-based Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (OAE), which plays on period
instruments, has worked since its creation in the mid-1980s without a permanent conductor.
The ensemble is highly praised by the press. One British critic wrote: “The OAE is, quite simply,
one of the finest ‘period’-instrument groups. Its playing…was superbly refined and exuberant”.
The highly acclaimed orchestra will be performing with the young soprano Lucy Crowe and the
tenor James Gilchrist and will be conducted by Steven Devine, who has also made a name for
himself as a harpsichordist. We will be hearing a serenata which is rarely performed in Germany:
“Solomon” by William Boyce, who in 1757 was appointed “Master of the King’s Musick” by
King George II.
