The catalyser in the development of
modernising activities in the automobile
sector was the crisis-ridden development
of the automobile industry in the
mid-1980s. At the time there were widespread
forecasts of drastic reductions in
the number of supplier companies and
manufacturers – worldwide and regional.
Because the automobile sector was
already very important to Rhineland-
Palatinate at that stage, the Automobile
Supplier Initiative Rhineland-Palatinate
was set up with the support of the Ministry
of Economics in Mainz.
Over the years this has developed a number
of activities, supporting the automobile
sector and its employees during a period
of overall positive development. This also
applies to the crisis from 2007 to 2009.

Another action was initiated in the state
from 2005, specialising in the commercial
vehicle field. In addition there are a range
of regionally concentrated activities within
the state, such as the Turbo Cluster in the
Donnersberg district.
