POLYTEC INTERIOR – a new member of the POLYTEC GROUP POLYTEC INTERIOR – ein neues Mitglied der POLYTEC GROUP POLYTEC INTERIOR has its origins in the Sudetenland, today part of the Czech Republic, where in 1903 EMIL PELZ bought a carpentry business and founded EMPE Werke. He created the name EMPE for his company by combining the first syllable of his first name with the first syllable of his surname. After the death of Emil Pelz in 1936, his son Ernst Pelz took over the business with approximately 40 employees and, with a lot of energy and drive, expanded this to 400 employees despite the difficult economic situation. At the end of the Second World War the Pelz family were dispossessed and driven out of their home country. Ernst Pelz made his way to Saxony and tried to establish a furniture factory in Thuringia, failing miserably. The refugees found better opportunities in the Wolfratshausen / Geretsried area in Upper Bavaria. Many former employees were already living in the Geretsried area, where a new start was made with EMPE Werke Ernst Pelz GmbH & Co. KG. During the reconstruction of Munich the company was involved in the production of windows and window frames, doors and door frames, roof structures, and every other kind of wooden product that was needed. During the fifties radio and television housings were build for the “sound furniture industry”. During this period people at the Bayerische Motoren Werke (BMW) remembered the EMPE Werke that had supplied wood crates during the war. By 1953 the company was in business in the automotive industry as a supplier to BMW with the legendary BMW V8. After Ernst Pelz died in 1983 his son Peter Pelz and his son-in-law Heinz Stickling took over the management of the company, but had left by 1995. Even under Ernst Pelz in 1980 the manufacture of door elements had been successfully re-started as a response to the steadily growing demand from the automobile industry. The processes and products developed and patented both in the high-grade wood sector and for interior applications and panel components of all kinds for the automobile industry are still the basis of today’s range of products. Poor management resulted in a fall of the equity position to around 13 %, and the company was taken over in 1995 by American and European investors. The roof cover product sector was taken over by an American company with a factory in the Czech Republic and the door and side panel sector was taken over in April 1997 by Findlay Industries Inc., USA with its head office in Geretsried and four production plants in Germany and Spain. These were supplemented by one production plant in each of Poland, England and South Africa. The wood panelling sector was retained by an American- European investor and may still be regarded as a successful enterprise. During this period, with the models E36, E39, E46, E83 and E90, BMW became the most important customer of Findlay Industries Deutschland GmbH, with a share of sales of almost 50%. Even today the BMW Group is one of the most important customers of POLYTEC INTERIOR GmbH and accounts for 36% of sales of the automotive division of the POLYTEC GROUP. Other customers of POLYTEC INTERIOR include companies such as GM with OPEL, SAAB, VAUXHALL and FIAT, DAIMLER CHRYSLER, and FORD with LAND ROVER, VW with AUDI, PORSCHE and VOLVO.
