Color and performance

Color pervades our perceptual experience of the world. Given the ubiquity of color in our
daily lives, it is surprising how little we know, at present, regarding color psychology. Much
research has been conducted on color physics and color physiology; almost no conceptual
and empirical work has been done on color psychology. In my talk, I will present a general
model of the influence of color on psychological functioning. Then, I will discuss two
hypotheses derived from this model regarding the effect of the color red on motivation and
behavior in achievement contexts and affiliation contexts. I will then report results from
over 10 experiments that test these hypotheses, and conclude by suggesting future
directions for research in this surprisingly under explored area.
