THE SOUND OF SAVOY GRAND IS VERY UNIQUE. IT IS HARD TO PUT IT INTO A SPEcIAL GENRE AND THERE ARE NOT MANY BANDS
TO cOMPARE WITH. HOW HAVE YOU BEEN INFLUENcED OF IN THE BEGINNING OF SAVOY GRAND?
GRAHAM: My songs have been influenced by all the music I listened to in my late teens and early twenties – The Smiths,
American Music Club, and Red House Painters in particular. I also think Billy Bragg was a big influence on me, too. His guitar
playing. And I have always been drawn to slower songs. I am just an old romantic. I realized recently the moment that what
was to become Savoy Grand was born for me; I was in a band at university. We were a weird mix, kind of grungey. Someone
once described us as a cross between Anthrax and The cure. We were doing a gig and it was going pretty badly, and the others
in the band got fed up and just walked off, but I wouldn’t leave, I stayed on stage singing very slowly and clearly, just me and
my guitar. It felt great. Then someone shouted “fuck off”. So I did. [Interview: Sebastian Gloser]
