Editorial
Jeurink in Hamburg abgewickelt.
Editorial
Dear members of the ESU European Diemaking Union
Among our MagazineTeam - our and our members contact person has retired. Marlis Kirschner retires! I would like to take advantage of the
opportunity to say ‘Thank you’ on behalf of the association for her exemplary execution of the work tendered since 1996 in the association and
the FDS magazine, later our ESU magazine. She was the one who was responsible for the advertisements, who managed the dispatch of the
magazine in an excellent way, who made sure that our association magazine flourished!
Many thanks to you, dear Ms Kirschner - with our best wishes for good health and for a happy
future. Enjoy the leisure time with your daughter and your grandchildren who may say: she is
not away - she has only retired!
We are also very glad that Ms Kirschner has taken care in advance regarding our magazine
together with Jürgen Jeurink and her daughter Susanne Schmidt. Susanne Schmidt will take
care for the display area. The dispatch will continuously be handled by the company Jeurink
in Hamburg.
The closing remark of our cover story, adopted by PROCARTON, regarding the most important
consumer trends in 2013 focuses on the transparency. Quotation: For brands it is no longer sufficient that they “do not have anything to conceal”.
Moreover, they must show and prove actively that this is the case “… real, unambiguous and clear evidence or statements about concrete
results are required”. Is this also a valid requirement for our diemakers At least it would do them credit as also the packaging manufacturers
as consumers of the diemaking industry place them in their supply chain. Openness among diemaking producers regarding the application of
new technologies and business models beside the technical methods of production could contribute to a better relationship and mutual trust.
And to improve the mutual trust seems to me a good possibility: chin up - I refuse this kind of profiteering.
Oeko trends, digital technology and apps might be the key words for the trends among consumers, among the diemaking producers the trends
of their clients in purchasing policy always produce new innovative ideas: concentration/takeover in the European packaging industry allow new
bonus claims. Before establishing new business contacts, the new/former suppliers are first of all required to pay a bonus of 5% on deliveries
made in the previous year.
The invitation to our members and non-members to Strasbourg is a further subject of this edition.
All of you - exhibitors and visitors - should not miss the general meeting and the ESU TECHNOLOGY FORUM 2013 in September. This key
industry event in Europe which is only offered every two years provides the unique opportunity to explore and discuss with your colleagues the
latest products regarding the state of technology in the diemaking industry.
Nachlese zur ESU-Mitgliederversammlung 2012 / General Meeting 2012
Looking back to two interesting days in the European capital
Strasbourg and the General Meetings in 2012 were
and with regard to 2013 are worth a trip! This view of
the mood among the participants was objective after
two days full of working sessions, event programmes
and a lot of time for networking.
Nearly eighty ESU members from Italy, the Netherlands,
France, Switzerland and Germany had been travelling
to Strasbourg despite the bad weather forecasts in the
previous days. Friday morning was scheduled for ESU
and ESU France Board Meetings as well as for meetings
of the Study Groups regarding the subject “Compendium
of diemaking”.
The sun and the mood brightened in the afternoon.
That was in particular when Dr. Hesse succeeded in
implementing the necessary increased contributions and
the successful replacement respectively reoccupation
of the available positions of the FDS Board members.
Dr. Hesse was reappointed as Chairman, Marc Butenuth
as 3. Chairman, Olaf Abendroth as treasurer and Harald
Stangenberg as secretary. Stefan Kiermeier has been
newly appointed as 2. Chairman of the FDS Board.
Edith Budaschik, the former 2. Chairman, unfortunately
was no longer available for re-appointment after three
years’ terms of office. Dr. Hesse and the Board members
thanked Edith with a bouquet of flowers.
The following ESU General Meeting was translated
simultaneously into English, French and German.
Through the reports submitted by the Board and the
Chairmen of the Regional Associations one could not see
and feel any sign of joy despite the positive economic
data regarding cost-/price development!
To counteract the pressure on prices of the major clients
in the packaging industry will be a further serious task
for our manufacturer’s members. To control the costs
but remain up-to-date in technics and employee training
is urgently needed. The latter especially in view of the
demographic development of the population, the personnel
resources.
5 ESU-MAGAZINE März 2013
Nachlese zur ESU-Mitgliederversammlung 2012 / General Meeting 2012
In his report Dr. Hesse compared the ESU Technology
Forum in Luxembourg in 2011 with other fairs as DRUPA
and Fachpack. He emphasized the outstanding priceperformance
ratio of our ESU Technology Forum for
exhibitors and visitors. A further advantage of this
industry exhibition, unique in Europe, was that only
here in connection with the ESU General Meeting
exhibitors and deciders meet to such a focul point of
diemaking. After three events of the Technology Forum
in Luxembourg in 2007, 2009 and 2011, the next event
takes place in Strasbourg in 2013. The participants are
cordially invited for 2013 and are recommended to take
time in knowing personally the city, the country and the
people.
As scheduled within the Management Board the treasurer
and the secretary have been newly reappointed. The
Management Board consists now of Dr. Hesse (G) as 1.
Chairman, Stefan Kiermeier (G) as 2. Chairman, Patrick
Gil (F) as 3.Chairman, Marcel Tigchelaar (NL) as treasurer
and Harald Stangenberg (A) as secretary.
The appointments for the Management Board involved
a replacement of the treasurer Rocco Cafarelli from
Italy who was not available for reappointment. New
appointed was Marcel Tigchelaar from the Netherlands.
In this respect the 1. Chairman Dr. Hesse thanked Rocco
Cafarelli for his considerable amount of time and
money he had managed as a Board Member. By the
additional international mandates in the Management
Board increased travel expenses will be necessary. A
proportional takeover of the financial contribution for
ESU travelling expenses is necessary and has therefore
been agreed upon.
Due to the activity of the study group “Compendium“,
Board Member Arthur Schmidgall and Senior teacher
Dieter Peter of the Vocational Business School in Lindau
reported about the current situation by compiling a
manual for the production of cutting dies.
After the General Meetings the participants could
finish off the Friday with a dinner and enough time for
networking. On Saturday a common event programme
followed. By an extense guided tour by bus, on foot,
by boat and time for window-shopping the participants
learned about the historical past, the current and political
present of Strasbourg. Getting to know a city this way
can really be funny, amusing and entertaining which was
demonstrated by the two guides led by Michel Schirch
on the occasion of an all-day event in Strasbourg - the
capital of Europe.
7 ESU-MAGAZINE März 2013
Neues aus dem Markt / Market News
The institute “trendwatching.com“ has predicted 10
trends for the year 2013 which include interesting
approaches for the design of packaging: sustainability
will be an essential for the supply chain, while
transparency, authenticity and globalisation will
present packaging design with new challenges.
1. Presumers & Custowners
Presumers love to get involved with, push, fund, and
promote products and services before they are realised.
And thanks to countless new crowdfunding platforms
and new manufacturing technologies, the coming 12
months will see Presumers have more opportunities
than ever to do so. Custowners are consumers who
move from passively consuming a product towards
funding/investing in the brands they buy. However,
these increasingly business-savvy consumers are often
looking for both a financial and an emotional return, and
therefore only brands that are open, friendly, honest,
trusted, transparent, and somewhat “human” will prove
able to attract enthusiastic Custowners.
2. Emerging Markets 2
While the last 20 years were about developed markets
catering to emerging ones, and emerging markets
increasingly catering to developed ones, the time has
now come for an explosion in products and services
from emerging markets for emerging markets. Think
of Chinese and Brazilian brands selling to the middle
classes in Turkey, India or South Africa. Or vice versa.
The numbers certainly look good: in 2013, the GDP of
emerging markets will exceed advanced markets for the
first time (measured in Purchasing Power Parity terms)
to USD 44.1 trillion versus USD 42.7 trillion (Source: IMF,
October 2012). One can expect the next global players
on the mass market coming from emerging markets.
3. Mobile Moments
Everyone contemplating the future of Mobiles & Co has
enough worth thinking about: in 2013, consumers will be
looking to their mobile devices to make maximum use
of every moment - lifestyle multi-tasking if not hypertasking
their experiences, shopping and entertainment.
Micro-convenience, mini-experiences and digital “snacks”
will rule in 2013. Hectic, urban lifestyles mean that
no amount of time will be too fleeting, or activity
too absorbing, to cram in more content, exchange,
consumption or simply more fun. The next 12 months
will see an explosion in mobile moments.
ESU-MAGAZINE März 2013
10 wichtige Konsumtrends 2013
Dank zahlreicher neuer
Crowdfunding-Plattformen und neuer Produktionstechnologien
werden die kommenden zwölf Monate
Presumers mehr Möglichkeiten bieten als je zuvor.
Custowners sind Konsumenten, denen passiver Konsum
eines Produktes nicht genügt, sie finanzieren und
investieren in Marken, deren Produkte sie benutzen.
Allerdings erwarten die Konsumenten, die immer
besseren Geschäftssinn beweisen, vermehrt auch
Gegenleistungen, und zwar nicht nur finanzieller, sondern
auch emotionaler Art. Daher werden nur Marken, die sich
als offen, freundlich, ehrlich, zuverlässig, transparent und
“menschlich” erweisen, enthusiastische Custowners
anlocken können.
übersteigen (gemessen in Kaufkraftparitäten); 44,1
Billionen USD gegen 42,7 Billionen USD (Quelle: IMF,
Oktober 2012). Es ist zu erwarten, dass die nächsten
Global Player auf dem Massenmarkt von aufstrebenden
Märkten hervorgebracht werden.
3. Mobile Momente
4. New Life Inside
Setting standards for the eco-trend 2013: products
and services that quite literally contain new life. These
products can be planted and grown or re-used otherwise
to create something new - with all the accompanying
eco-status and eco-stories.
Recession or no recession, in the long term sustainability
is one of the most important objectives of a brand. Of
course, “a second life” is not going to solve the major
ecological challenges. But more than ever in 2013, there
is great symbolic value in creating new, environmentally
beneficial life from a consumer product.
5. Appscriptions
Digital technologies are the new medicine. This year,
consumers will be consulting their doctors and expecting
them to recommend and even “prescribe” health apps
and other technologies as part of a course of treatment.
With over 13,000 health apps in the Apple app store it
is no longer a matter of finding an app, but finding the
BEST one, and one that is accurate and safe.
Even if you are not involved in the health industry, it pays
to spend an hour thinking about the bigger underlying
trend - towards mobile driven service delivery.
6. Celebrating Heritage
Emerging markets will proudly export and even flaunt
their national and cultural heritage in the next year.
Symbols, lifestyles and traditions that were previously
downplayed if not denied, are being brought up to date,
to become a source of pride for domestic consumers
and of interest to global consumers. Global cultural
capital will continue to be promoted as will its financial
equivalent.
Dienstleistungen.
It’s time to partner with a local brand from an emerging
market and bring their flavour to your customers!
7. Data “Myning”
To date, the “big data” discussion has focused on the
value of customer data to businesses. Now, consumers
are becoming conscious of the value of their lifestyle
data and will use it, turning to brands that use this data
proactively to offer customers help and advice on how
to improve their life and/ or save money.
Of course, this is nothing new in the world of entertainment,
but in 2013 expect even “mundane” industries
to start taking consumers’ data and putting it to use.
However, brands will have to walk a fine line between
offering consumers a valuable and ideally seamless
service, and unsettling them with aggressive if not
downright scary promotion. Consumers want a feeling
of service, not of being watched.
8. Back to Local Manufacturing
The craving of consumers for all things new, the
expectation of getting the right product instantly, ecoconcerns
and the desire for more interesting stories, will
all combine with the spread of new local manufacturing
technologies. 3D-printing and “make-on-demand” will
6. Die Herkunft zelebrieren
Aufstrebende Märkte werden im kommenden Jahr ihr
nationales und kulturelles Erbe stolz hervorkehren und
exportieren.

all combine with the spread of new local manufacturing
technologies. 3D-printing and “make-on-demand” will
contribute to the renaissance of local production in
developed markets.
In view of new technologies and business models this
is certainly more than just being about local production.
And of course, this will be welcome news for industry
concerned with rising labour costs in China and, long
lead times and fragile global supply chains.
9. Total Transparency
The trend towards transparency will increase in 2013:
brands must move from “having nothing to hide”, to
pro-actively showing and proving they have nothing to
hide. Lofty statements on “values” or “culture” will no
longer suffice; real, unambiguous and clear evidence on
actual results is required.
Not all consumers will be this demanding, but total
transparency is becoming a hygiene factor. Even less
demanding customers will expect brands to prove their
ethical and environmental credentials to those that do
care. Only brands offering the utmost confidence in
their product and themselves will be able to be fully
transparent.
10. Demanding Brands
In 2013, ambitious brands embarking on the journey
towards a more sustainable and socially-responsible
future will demand that their customers also contribute,
and in doing so earn the respect of even the most hyperdemanding
of consumers.
knüpfen, und aggressiver oder sogar beängstigender
Werbung. Konsumenten möchten bedient werden, aber
nicht beobachtet.
8. Wieder lokal hergestellt
verbinden. 3D-Druck und Produktion “on demand”
Kunden ebenso dazu beitragen.
Pressemitteilung 2012 Fachverband Faltschachtel-Industrie e.V.:
Deutsche Faltschachtelindustrie 2011 – Allzeithoch beim Produktionswert
abgeschlossen.
Nach Angaben des Statistischen Bundesamtes (BUSTA)
hat die Gesamtbranche den Produktionswert auf 1.907
Milliarden EUR (+4,5%) gesteigert. Diese Entwicklung
beim Produktionswert ist umso erfreulicher, als dass
sich im Dreijahreszeitraum 2009 bis 2011 eine deutlich
langsamere Veränderung beim Produktionsvolumen
ergeben hat. Im aktuellen Berichtsjahr 2011 “stagniert”
die Produktionsmenge der Gesamtbranche bei 860.000
Tonnen (-0,3%).
FFI Bedeutung an der Gesamtbranche wächst auch
2011
Zu den Ergebnissen der im Fachverband Faltschachtel-
Industrie (FFI) e.V. zusammengeschlossenen Unternehmen
Deutsche Faltschachtelindustrie herausragend deutlich
geworden ist. Die 85 FFI Mitglieder haben 2011 ihren
Produktionswert um 5,9% auf 1.494 Milliarden EUR und
ihre Produktionsmenge um 4,5% auf 599.000 Tonnen
gesteigert.
78,3%.“
Rückläufige Kapazitätsauslastung in 2011
aller Faltschachteln in Europa hergestellt. Dabei
2009 richtig erholen konnte. Aufgrund der seit Jahren
allgemein dynamischen volkswirtschaftlichen Entwick-
Kreuzwalztechnologie.
Was sind kreuzgewalzte Bleche
Salzwasser.
Steel production and processing - basis for the production of cutting dies
Cutting rules and cutting plates are essential for the
quality and precision that guarantee long service
life of cutting dies. What demands do the diemakers
and their customers of the packaging industry make
These questions, frequently asked by our members,
were the reason for planning such an on-site seminar.
The seminar took place on 13 to 15 March 2013 at
What means “crossrolled plates“
With this special rolling techology - Cross Rolling forming
is done in longitudinal and transversal direction.
This rolling procedure combined with a special
heat treatment (solution annealing with following
precipitation hardening) causes isotropic properties in
the dimensional change and mechanical properties and
leads to higher lifespan.
Through this Cross Rolling Technology round grains are
produced compared to coil plates which are rolled only
in one direction. As a result of this, isotropic mechanical
and physical properties (e.g. thermal expansion) are
achieved. These properties are responsible for good
flatness also at changing temperatures.
Böhler Bleche offers cross rolled and precipitation
hardened grades “BÖHLER N702” and “BÖHLER
Stainless Superhard N713”. Böhler has developed both
materials for the application as Die Cutting Plates.
25 ESU-MAGAZINE März 2013
Aus der Verbandsarbeit
Precipitation hardened plates = hard plates
Materials used for “hard“ Die Cutting Plates, Böhler
Stainless Superhard N713 (according to AISI XM-16)
and Böhler N702 (according to AISI 630) are precipitation
hardened steel grades. After solution annealing and
following quenching an austenitic martensitic grain
structure is achieved. Final hardness is achieved by
precipitation hardening. Intermetallic phases are created
which are giving high and uniform hardness and good
wear resistance.
The most important advantage of Böhler’s material
compared to competitor’s material AISI 420 ist the
uniform hardness over all the plate. At hardened and
tempered material AISI 410/420 “soft spots” may
occure.
For precipitation hardened material best flatness is
achieved without any following roller leveling This way
a stress relieved plate is produced as precipitation
hardening is done on a quite low temperature (on a
temperature stess relieving is done).
Very important for the use of Die Cutting Plates is
also corosion resistance. Evidence is given by testing
in corrosive media (test of following picture is done in
splash water at Helgoland - North Sea).
Austenitic steel - coldrolled = medium hard cutting
plates
Material Böher A500 with hardness of approximately 35
HRC is an austenitic steel. Hardness is reached by cold
rolling, while N702 and N713 are precipitation hardened.
This product was developed within the past years as
customers demanded a “medium hard” Die Cutting
Plate for medium high to high lots.
As this grade is used for thin cutting plates thickness
range is from 1 to 1,6 mm.
