The renaissance of the ‘Sommerfrische’: A cool lakeside summer retreat in Pörtschach
Around 1900, Pörtschach am Wörthersee was one of the most popular destinations for
the so-called ‘Sommerfrische’ – a practice of the rich, the fashionable and the aristocracy
to spend the summer outside the city in a beautiful summer retreat. The Austrian,
German and English nobility, who enjoyed the summer months in the idyllic Austrian
lakeside villages seeking recreation in the Mediterranean climate and the breathtakingly
beautiful landscape, made the Wörthersee ('Lake Wörth') region famous. Among those
appreciating the Wörthersee as a place of wellbeing for body and soul was the famous
German composer Johannes Brahms.

The holiday region Wörthersee

lakes. Over a length of 17 kilometers and with a width of 1.600 meters the lake with its
clear, turquoise-blue water offers all the recreation and sports possibilities guests could
want. And there is much to be discovered ashore as well: innumerable enchanting manor
houses, mansions, traditional boathouses and bathhouses are part of the lake’s architectural
landscape. The characteristic ‘Wörthersee Architecture’ was established during the late
1800s and early 1900s and to this day shapes the appearance of the villages around the
lake, with more contemporary structures starting to appear here and there.
