VALUABLE
COLLECTORS’ ITEMS
Each item in our new series of Limited-Edition Art Works symbolises a given point in
our 300-year history. Art collectors all over the world are, like our founder Augustus the
Strong before them, afflicted by the “maladie de porcelaine” – and certainly appreciate
the enduring value of this rare craftsmanship.

Art Collection
„Saxonia“.
Ich wünsche Ihnen viel Freude beim Entdecken unserer
Edition 2015!
Es grüßt Sie herzlich
Preface
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN,
LOVERS OF MEISSEN PORCELAIN®,
I have great pleasure in being able to present our 2015
series of Limited-Edition Artworks to you with this brochure.
It has again proved possible to select outstanding
items from every artistic period since the Manufactory was
founded over 300 years ago for this collection, allowing us
to submit an exquisite offering to collectors.
Our vases demonstrate just how broadly based
MEISSEN ® is. The showpiece potpourri vase from 1763
with figure painting after Boucher, for instance, really is a
bit special, an item that demanded the highest skills of all
concerned - from modellers, to repairers, to painters.
Our 300-year tradition is likewise reflected in Horst
Bretschneider’s state-of-the-art “Fragrance of Summer”
vase. Its shape, moulded features and painting complement
each other perfectly.
There are not one, but two dazzlingly distinctive offerings
for collectors of dog figurines. First there is a pug as
snuff box. The Meissen Manufactory has been producing
pug dogs since the mid-18th century. The cult of the pug
gave rise not only to 90 or so different models of the lovable
little dog, it additionally adorned boxes and is unusually
fashioned as a snuff box here.
The other dog guards a casket and will be able to watch
over your most special treasures. MEISSEN ® connoisseurs
will immediately spot the similarity to the “Russian Greyhound”
and this is sure to have also inspired Johann Daniel
Schöne, the box’s creator.
Two déjeuners, both devoted to the issue of figure painting
and both unique in their own different ways, will make
for greatly enjoyable coffee or tea ceremonies. The Gotzkowski
set transports its beholder to Venice and the world
of the Commedia dell‘Arte. The Stadler-style figure painting
on the second déjeuner, by contrast, takes us to far-off
China. Atmospheric scenes from everyday Chinese life as it
was imagined to be in 18th-century Europe join with a lilac
ground to imbue this set with a radiant sense of joie de vivre
and harmony.
You may have touched an elephant at some time in your
life. It was undoubtedly a pleasant experience - as is taking
hold of the elephant by Max Esser. Produced in Böttger
Stoneware ® , the Manufactory’s oldest material, the elephant
is notable for its soft-looking body areas and elaborate fine
detail. A hands-on approach is certainly the order of the day
here.
November 2014 saw the unveiling at the House of
Meissen of “Saxonia”, the largest free-standing porcelain
sculpture ever produced by MEISSEN ® , indeed the largest
in the world. Jörg Danielczyk, designer and Sculptor-in-
Chief at the Manufactory, fulfilled a life’s dream with this
work. Fashion has preoccupied the artist for several years
now. The model exudes elegant grace in her evening gown
and can be said to have served as a model for the somewhat
larger “Saxonia”.
Have fun browsing through our 2015 series.
Yours sincerely,
Liane Werner
EINE ZEITREISE DURCH
STILE UND EPOCHEN
A TIME-TRIP THROUGH STYLES AND EPOCHS
From the Rococo to art nouveau, from the impressionistic motifs of François Boucher to the
voluptuous Baroque shapes of Johann Joachim Kaendler, our Limited-Edition Artworks are a
time-trip through epochs in style – and the unique craftsmanship of the Meissen Manufactory.

300 JAHRE KUNSTHANDWERK –
SAMMLERSTÜCKE FÜR DIE EWIGKEIT
300 YEARS OF CRAFTSMANSHIP –
COLLECTIBLES FOR ETERNITY
In jedem einzelnen
Manufaktur in höchster Vollendung bestand.
Naturalistic flower painting on a wall plaque and exotic chinoiseries
as the motif on a dish. Profusely decorated vases and figurines
bear the stamp of the Rococo or Biedermeier: our Limited-Edition
Artworks are a time-trip through styles and epochs - and through
unique, rich-in-tradition craftsmanship.
MEISSEN ® has been creating artworks for eternity in a period spanning
four centuries. Their moulds are jealously guarded and stored
in our sizeable archives, from which they are brought back to life in
limited editions. This enables works from past heydays - by Kaendler,
Acier or Scheurich, from the Rococo to art nouveau - to be recreated at
any time. It is a globally unique treasure trove from which we tap, one
that inspires us over and over again. Our Limited-Edition Artworks
are thus invariably also a time-trip through epochs in style, through
300 years of Manufactory history and the great legacy of generations of
Meissen porcelain painters and paint chemists, repairers and modellers.
Born of a love of crafted art
All our limited-edition pieces are so challenging in terms of their
craftsmanship that they can only be made by the very best Manufactory
staff. That holds both for the sculptural sphere of porcelain shaping and
for their intricate decoration by hand. Every single work is marked
by ability and patience, by a great love and passion for centuries-old
craftsmanship that has been practised to utter perfection from the
Manufactory’s very beginnings. The fact that the various techniques
are still mastered at MEISSEN ® today is solely due to our training our
painters and designers ourselves and to know-how having been passed
down from one generation to the next. Many of our artists stay with
us all their working lives - thus becoming part of history and Europe’s
oldest porcelain manufactory.
Potpourrivase „Figurenmalerei nach Boucher“
Vase with “figure painting after Boucher”
270284-81M05-1
H 66 cm, Lim. 10
40 Jahren ihres Bestehens gebracht hatte.
Platz daneben verdient.
The Baroque and Rococo are regarded as ages of very exuberant
form in which splendour was given full rein. Extravagant potpourri
vases, copiously applied with moulded flowers and figurines,
were extraordinarily popular in the mid-18th century. They pool
the whole gamut of MEISSEN ® artistic skills from complex formal
design through sculpture and modelling to painting. They are similarly
evidence of the fact that, after just 40 years in operation, the
Manufactory was flourishing.
One of its most outstanding modellers, Johann Joachim Kaendler
(1706-1775), created this masterpiece at the height of his artistic powers
in around 1763. Opulent as the vase may be, the composition and
layout of its decoration are nevertheless perfectly proportioned. The
elegant verve and subtle charm of Kaendler’s figures are wholly in the
Rococo vein. They resemble the cherubs and nymphs that also adorn
his famous Swan Service. With their plasticity and extremely vibrant
posture, they augment impressionistic painted detail based on a picture
of “Autumn” from a Four Seasons series by the Frenchman François
Boucher (1703-1770). Court painter to Louis Quinze and favourite of
the Marquise de Pompadour, he was peerless in his ability to portray
the gallant world of the Rococo in motifs that are by turn lascivious,
mythological, allegorical and erotic. Some of his works hang in the Louvre
and the St. Petersburg Hermitage – Kaendler’s magnificent work of
art in porcelain would have merited a place next to them.
Von oben im Uhrzeigersinn: Beim
erweckt.
Clockwise from top: attention is paid to
even the smallest detail when moulding
the flower-heads. The source material for
the painting took the form of François
Boucher’s lascivious allegorical “Autumn”
motif, lent new life on porcelain.
Carpe diem, “Pluck the day when it is ripe”, is the motto of this
splendid time-piece from the mid-18th century. Meissen sculptor
Johann Gottlieb Kirchner symbolised the course of time – and
finiteness of life – in a consummate, multifaceted manner in his
mantelpiece clock.
In vielen Facetten symbolisierte Bildhauer Johann Gottlieb Kirchner
unterliegt stetem Wandel. Davon zeugen die in feinsten Pinselstrichen
gemalten, Gold gerahmten Miniaturen auf Sockel und Schild: Hafenszenen
aus den Niederlanden, England und Portugal. Der Handelsweg
über die alte Seidenstraße hatte im 18. Jahrhundert an Bedeutung verloren.
Jahrhunderts
nicht zweimal sagen.
The sculptor Johann Gottlieb Kirchner (1706-1768) symbolised
the course of time in a great many facets on a splendid mantelpiece
clock he produced at MEISSEN ® in 1727 and which Johann Joachim
Kaendler (1706-1775) subsequently reworked.
Tiny cherubs hold a fabric in gleaming blue – colour of the sky, distance
and infinity. Against this backdrop, the clock’s hands move round
the clockface from daytime, represented as a female figure with a sun,
to night-time on the lefthand side. Two sphinxes between the base and
the upper section are indicative of transience. The riddle with which,
according to Greek mythology, they confronted Oedipus recalls the
finiteness of life: “What walks on four feet in the morning, two at noon
and three in the evening?” – Answer: human beings during infancy,
adulthood and old age. The world around is likewise subject to constant
change. Gilt-framed miniatures painted with the finest of brush-strokes
on base and panel bear witness to this, portraying harbour scenes from
the Netherlands, Britain and Portugal. The trade route via the ancient
Silk Road dwindled in importance in the 18th century. Fabrics, exotic
spices and much more besides now reached Europe from distant lands
by sea. Maritime commerce boomed then much as it is doing these
days - though to a comparably more modest degree. And “carpe diem”
is still the watchword of this consummate clock almost 300 years on.
The overseas traders and adventurers of the time would have lost no
time taking up the suggestion in the mood of euphoria that reigned in
the 18th century.
Manufakturisten beherrschen.
Imitating oil-paintings is one of the Manufactory’s supreme skills,
as the wall plaque to a work by the Dutch painter Jan Frans van
Dael impressively demonstrates. Porcelain painters at Meissen have
succeeded in exquisitely rendering the naturalness of the spring
flowers down to the last detail – an art that only a few particularly
talented and experienced Manufactory staff are capable of.
ACCOMPLISHED CRAFTSMANSHIP
A bountiful array of roses, tulips, iris, plume poppies, bear’s ear
and other flowers of spring and summer shine out at us from this
masterpiece on porcelain, a slightly modified version of a work
by the great Dutch flower-and-fruit painter Jan Frans van Dael
(1774-1840).
Picture painting is one of the highest arts practised at the Manufactory,
one that none but a very few staff with long experience and exceeding
aptitude are versed in. The replica painting reflects to perfection
van Dael’s inimitable penchant for rendering flowers in a particularly
naturalistic, faithfully detailed manner. The colours are painted and
scumbled onto the glazed porcelain in several layers and fired several
times. Our porcelain painter most ably manifests his great talent, craft
skills and mastery of the colour palette in the process. The Dutchman
van Dael’s clients included Napoleon Bonaparte and Charles the
Fifth. His pictures can now be admired in the Hermitage Museum at
St. Petersburg, the Lyon Museum or the Louvre. The copy of “Still
life with vase of flowers” with its sumptuous gilt-tooled frame is an
exquisite counterpart whose splendour can be enjoyed anew in private
and every day. Its flowers will never wither and, unlike the original, this
choice work of art will never fade or lose its sheen.
Tassen haben als Sammlerstücke eine lange Tradition. Bereits
zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhundert entwickelte sich in bürgerlichen
Kreisen der Brauch, zu Anlässen wie Geburtstag, Taufe oder
Jubiläum und als besonderen Freundschaftsbeweis einzelne, reich
dekorierte Tassen zu verschenken.
Im Biedermeier wurde der Kaffee- oder Teetisch zum Mittelpunkt
der Familie und zum Treffpunkt der Frauen. Beim so genannten
bauchigen Tassen opulent dekoriert, in ausdrucksvollen Farben handgestuppt
Cups have a long tradition as collectors’ items. It had already
become customary in middle-class circles by the beginning of the
19 th century to make gifts of single, richly decorated cups as special
tokens of friendship on occasions such as birthdays, christenings or
anniversaries.
Coffee and tea-tables increasingly became the centre of middle-class
family life and a meeting place for women in the Biedermeier period.
Coffee mornings were held at which the latter would privately exchange
the latest news and improve their minds. These three, gaily coloured,
relief-moulded cups would have provided plenty to talk about as the
decorative point of focus on the table.
Their designs date back to between 1840 and 1850 and were the
work of Ernst August Leuteritz (1818-1893). As Head of the Model
Shop at MEISSEN ® , he championed a Rococo revival in order to reinvoke
the exuberance of the 18th century. His bellied cups are opulently
decorated with relief-moulded seashells, fig leaves and acanthus,
hand-daubed in strong colours and enriched with 23-karat gold – there
can be no more beautiful token of the preciousness of friendship. These
valuable showpiece items are as eye-catching in any collector’s cabinet
today as they ever were.
WELLENSPIEL-
VASEN MIT BELAG
SPRIGGED “WAVES” VASES
Tiny moulded flowers of enchanting delicacy make each of these
vases unique. Consummately modelled by hand, no two are alike.
The shapes that go to make up the “Waves” tableware service with
its flowing rims and fine relief-moulding were not created until 1996
at MEISSEN ® . They have already come to be regarded as modern classics,
however, by dint of their harmonious proportions. They blend
in with the applied decoration so typical of the early 18 th century in
literally the finest possible way. Roses, orchids and water-lilies alike
are all lent a radiance befitting spring by the pastel shades in which
they are coloured. And the painting that replicates the flowers in the
pattern instils such a natural sense of space into the tiny arrangements
that they seem to give off a fine fragrance. MEISSEN ® porcelain artists
have thus come up with a major gift for flower enthusiasts – florists
excluded, since their decorations are not sought here.
FALTVASE „BLUMENMALEREI
NACH MONIKA ZEINAR“
FOLDED VASE WITH
“FLOWER PAINTING AFTER MONIKA ZEINAR”
Monika Zeinars Inspirationen
stammen einmal nicht aus den
Archiven der Manufaktur,
sondern aus der freien Natur.
Monika Zeinar draws
inspiration from Mother
Nature rather than the
Manufactory archives.
The world of flowers has always conspired to engross us with its
inexhaustible variety of colours, shapes and fragrances. Tulips, an
exotic rarity from distant Constantinople at the time, once triggered
a veritable craze in the Netherlands: there were those who risked
house and home to acquire just one of them in the 1630s.
Shares began to be traded in tulip bulbs. The show was over within
seven years, however, culminating in the first stock-exchange crash in
history. But far more exotic plants still were now brought to Europe
by circumnavigators, conquerors, adventurers and naturists. They
were coveted to such a degree that even pictures of them fetched top
prices. Flower painting unfolded to the full in the Baroque. And it
evolved into the most steadfast of all genres in Germany’s first porcelain
manufactory at MEISSEN ® – in the form of “dry flower painting”
based on etchings by the painter and naturist Maria Sybilla Merian in
the mid-18th century, thereafter as decorative “mannered flowers” or
the “scattered flowers pattern”.
“Naturalistic flower painting” of the sort our painter Monika
Zeinar has now interpreted in a modern guise began to take over on
porcelain from the 19th century. Inspiration for patterns was drawn
not from archives but from Nature herself. Minor irregularities and
peculiarities give a sense of authenticity to every leaf and petal. Finely
graduated colours and the play of light and shade heighten the optical
illusion. Monika Zeinar incorporates the shape of the vase, designed
in the year 2000, into the arrangement to lend it a spatial dimension
– her tulips, too, are a costly rarity as a result.
SCHALE MIT BLÜTENBELÄGEN
PLATE SPRIGGED WITH FLOWERS
Frankreich her Reliefdekore in Mode kamen.
Proof of how beneficial competition can be to creative endeavour
is to be found in this plate with its relief-moulded rim and finest
painted decoration in the Old Style.
It is formally related to a dessert plate from a service for Count Brühl
(1700-1763), designed in around 1730 during the MEISSEN ® Manufactory’s
first heyday. Its creation was aided by rivalry between the
two great artistic skills brought to bear in the fashioning of porcelain:
painting and the lending of shape, i.e. modelling.
Hardly had Johann Gregorius Höroldt (1606-1775) developed his
sixteen new overglaze colours, and hence created the wherewithal for
painting porcelain in finely differentiated colours, than relief-moulded
patterns came into fashion from France. The relief-decorated pattern
of wickerwork trellising and intertwined floral tendrils on this plate’s
pierced rim is known as “Brühl’sches Allerlei”. The Old Style painting
with copper colours in the well of the plate was inspired by early
pieces from the Manufactory. It is also a fresh variation on a constantly
recurring MEISSEN ® theme: the rose, encircled here by dainty flowerheads
that do not seek to steal the show from the Queen of Flowers.
The sprigged detail on the relief-moulded rim is coloured to match,
underscoring the harmonious unity of consummate form and painting.
Moulded flower-heads coloured in the
Real flowers could never outdo the flourish of freshness that appears
to envelop this particular vase – a throw-back to early artistic outpourings
from MEISSEN ® .
Whilst the Manufactory was still in its infancy and coloured glazes
had yet to evolve, decoration of a sculptural nature predominated. It
was only once Johann Gregorius Höroldt (1696-1775) had added16
new colours to the palette that it became possible to produce richly
detailed porcelain patterns - chinoiseries, harbour scenes and oriental
flower painting for the most part initially. Within a short while, however,
our porcelain painters were drawing no end of fresh inspiration
from pictures documenting the exotic finds made on expeditions by
botanists and entomologists. Hand-coloured etchings found their way
into the graphic collections at MEISSEN ® back in the 18th century.
The gripping naturalistic representations of flora and fauna produced
by Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717) in “Metamorphosis insectorum
Surinamensium”, a milestone in both publishing and entomological
terms, still serve as ideal source material today.
Moulded flower-heads coloured in the manner of a copperplate
engraving really bring out the broad-wash painting in the vase’s decoration.
Single leaves, tooled in gold with an agate stick following firing,
create points of gleaming focus – enriching a floral profusion that will
thankfully never wither.
PURPLE GLAZE
Mit ruhiger Hand dekoriert eine Porzellanmalerin die
feinen Blüten der Dose mit verschiedensten, eigens
angemischten Farben.
With a calm hand, a porcelain painter applies a wide
variety of self-mixed colours to the frail flowers on the box.
waren dabei ein „must have“.
Coffee and tea-tables increasingly became the centre of middleclass
family life in the Biedermeier period – or the venue for coffee
mornings at which the ladies would exchange the latest news and
improve their minds.
Showy, opulently decorated collectors’ cups and choice services
were a “must have” at such events. No cake plates were required, since
the custom then was to pass round titbits or biscuits – preferably from a
porcelain box matching the splendid service – rather than slices of cake.
SEMPERVASE
„REICHE BLUMENMALEREI“,
PURPUR GLASIERT
SEMPER VASE WITH “OPULENT FLOWER
PAINTING”, RED BORDER GLAZE
Zwei prächtige Sommersträuße in
traditioneller Blumenmalerei zieren die
Vorder- und Rückseite dieses Kunstwerks
nach Gottfried Semper.
Two magnificent bunches of summer
flowers painted in the traditional style
adorn the front and back of this artwork
after Gottfried Semper.
Der frei denkende Architekt und Kunsthistoriker Gottfried
Semper (1803 –1879) hatte ohne Zweifel Sinn für Großes. Eindrucksvoll
The free-thinking architect and art historian Gottfried Semper
(1803-1879) certainly had an eye for grandeur, making an impressive
impact on the cityscapes of Dresden, Zurich and Vienna. He was
appointed Professor of Architecture at Dresden’s Royal Academy
of Fine Arts in 1834.
It was during this period of residence in the Saxon capital that he
worked with MEISSEN ® . He designed this showpiece vase, which was
to prove a major technical challenge even for the Manufactory’s practised
porcelain artists, in 1836. It was extremely difficult to fire owing
to its great size but the process was nevertheless a success, allowing the
spectacular masterpiece to be presented at the 1851 World’s Fair in London.
The original is no longer extant unfortunately. Luckily, however,
Gottfried Semper’s mould sections and plaster model have been preserved
in the Manufactory’s more than 300-year-old stock of moulds,
the MEISSEN ® archives, until the present-day. It has been possible
with their help to painstakingly reconstruct the Semper Vase, albeit
not completely, since the new edition comes without the original cover.
Its front and back show two magnificent bouquets of flowers, seemingly
just picked out of the garden, in a traditional flower-painting
style. The red ground underscores this warm summer mood and acts
as a decorative basis for refined gilding that sets the splendid piece off
to great effect.
The pattern with small woodland berries is
The Empire coffee service after Ernst August Leuteritz (1818-1893)
comes across as being capricious and full of fascinating detail –
wholly in the MEISSEN ® manner in other words.
As Head of the Modelling Department at MEISSEN ® , Leuteritz
championed a revival of the opulence engendered by the 18th century
nobility’s need for show. The present work is in the style of the Biedermeier,
an age in which the bourgeoisie withdrew into its own private
realm. Coffee and tea-tables became places where meetings with the
family and guests took place. Enthusiasm for showy porcelain reemerged
accordingly – not for day-to-day use, but as something to
be placed in a showcase cabinet or else as a means of demonstrating
affluence and an awareness of style on special occasions.
Small woodland berries, which our porcelain painter found whilst
out walking, and a large species of speedwell, which he discovered on a
trip through the Caucasus, inspired the artist to author a pattern full of
flowers and fruit. These are lusciously augmented by areas of moulded
relief picked out in gilt. Small berries crown the covers of the pot and
sugar basin – decoration enough for any coffee table or cabinet.
VERGISSMEINNICHT-VASE
„NATURALISTISCHE BEERENFRÜCHTE“
FORGET-ME-NOT VASE WITH “NATURALISTIC BERRIES”
Brombeeren und Erdbeeren erscheinen
auf der Vase zum Greifen nah. Seit
Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts wird die
naturalistische Frucht- und Blumenmalerei
in der Manufaktur perfektioniert.
Blackberries and strawberries seem close
enough to take hold of on this vase.
Naturalistic fruit-and-flower painting
has been honed to perfection at the
Manufactory since the mid-19th century.
Glanzlichter aufsetzen. Ohne sich unterzuordnen, machen die zauberhaft
zarten Blüten in ihrer symmetrischen Anordnung der Malerei
keine Konkurrenz.
The choicely gilt-framed panels on this covered vase afford a glimpse
into a prolific world of horticulture. The blackberries and strawberries
on the cover’s vaulted sides appear to be within easy grasp.
The realistic spatial quality of the red berries is largely down to
Matthias Steinert’s prowess as a naturalistic painter of fruit and flowers.
This is a style of painting that artists at MEISSEN ® have been honing to
a peak of perfection since the mid-19 th century. Use is made of the play
of light and shade as well as of extreme chromatic gradations to portray
even the finest of detail in such clarity that flower-heads and fruit
come across as being virtually three-dimensional. They are caressed by
hundreds of tiny forget-me-nots moulded onto the vase that are caused
to gleam by tiny dots of gilding. These beguiling, symmetrically arranged
little flowers do not seek to rival the painted detail, yet neither are
they about to take second place to it. Form and decoration enter into
a symbiotic union, just as in Nature, though with the advantage that
they know no autumn.
This wall plaque centres on a chirpy pair of great tits on the lookout
for insects. They may have up to twelve young in their nest, meaning
these gaily hued native birds are constantly engaged in filling all
their gullets in spring.
Precocious, intelligent and adaptable as they are, they are not at all
shy of humans and often come into their gardens. As clearly was the
case with our porcelain painter, for whom they constituted lively observation
material. She has certainly done a fantastic job of capturing the
movements of these colourful fellows – indeed, they look as authentic
as if we were watching them through the window. A stylised tendril
with leaves and berries encircles the motif on the frame and underscores
with the delicate course it takes the magic of this moment caught in
time. Branches and foliage are classily coated in platinum so they gleam
as if in the morning sun. A miniature work of art from the MEISSEN ®
about to fly away.
WANDBILD „EISVÖGEL MIT INSEKTEN“
WALL PLAQUE WITH “KINGFISHERS AND INSECTS”
Der flüchtige Moment des Abflugs,
virtuos eingefangen zwischen stilisierten,
mit Platin belegten Schilfzweigen.
The fleeting moment of take-off, ably
captured amidst stylised reeds applied
with platinum.Viennese manner.
Insektenjagd geht, geradezu exotisch an.
The onus at MEISSEN ® is generally on painting native birds, and
yet the splendid pair hunting insects in the reeds here are well-nigh
exotic in appearance.
Our porcelain painter discovered these kingfishers with their heads,
backs and wings in cobalt-blue and rust-red bellies by the river Elbe.
She was able to observe through the undergrowth how, with their
almost wedge-shaped bodies and long pointed beaks, they repeatedly
performed somersaults as they plunged into the water almost vertically
in order to catch insects, small fish, crabs and tadpoles. The artist captures
their taking off so vividly in the middle of the wall plaque that we
actually experience the splashing of the water as they home in. Encircling
the motif around the frame is a gently stylised spray of leaves and
berries. Reeds and foliage are coated with platinum in such a manner
that they appear to glint in the morning sun. The setting is so authentic
as a result that one fears the birds might dive under at any moment.
VASE „JAGDMALEREI NACH
VASE WITH “HUNTING SCENES AFTER RIDINGER”
ON A YELLOW GROUND
Die Farben der Parforcejagd,
der Hetzjagd mit
Hunden und Pferden,
Rahmen für die detailreiche
Jagdszene.
The colours of par force
hunting, where the game is
run down by hounds and
horses, form a perfect
framework for the richly
detailed hunt scene.
The Saxon Elector and Manufactory founder Augustus the Strong
(1670-1733) shared two major passions with his son Augustus III
(1696-1763) – for the fine arts and for hunting. These are simultaneously
symbols of a worldliness and power most lavishly articulated
in their hunting lodge at Hubertusburg.
The ravages of the Seven Years’ War put an end to all such pomp by
1761, however. It is accordingly all the more amazing that four of an
original set of five choice MEISSEN ® mantelshelf vases have survived
to the present day. They were modelled by Johann Joachim Kaendler
(1706-1775). The talented Höroldt pupil Johann Georg Heintze (1706-
1750) consummately adorned them with highly detailed par force hunting
scenes based on copperplate engravings by Johann Elias Ridinger
(1698-1767), who was famed for his ability to capture the essence of a
moment. MEISSEN ® made delivery of the famous series to crown the
St. Hubert’s Day celebrations on 3 November 1739. It is the largest of
the five vases, the central item, that provided the source material for the
present limited edition, depicting as it does a major round-table hunt
banquet attended by the prince and princess. The cover is embossed
with a hunter blowing his horn to announce the successful completion
of the hunt – the revelries can commence.
TABAKPFEIFE “CHINOISERIEN
NACH HÖROLDT” IN SEPIA
PIPE WITH “CHINOISERIES AFTER HÖROLDT”
IN SEPIA
Bereits die Meissener
Manufakturisten der ersten
Stunde zauberten kleine
Alltagsszenen aus dem
Reich der Mitte auf
Porzellan.
Some of the earliest artists
at the Meissen Manufactory
committed magical
little everyday scenes from
the Middle Kingdom to
porcelain.
Jahrhundert in ganz Europa
300 Jahre Handwerkskunst in Perfektion vereint.
The very first inventories drawn up for the MEISSEN ® Manufactory
list hundreds of tobacco-pipes. They were made in one piece
out of Böttger stoneware along the lines of clay pipes from Holland.
The brown material was eclipsed by “white gold” within two years
of the latter’s invention, however. Thus, from 1710, MEISSEN ® pipe
bowls were made in porcelain. This gets very hot when the pipe is
smoked, which led to multiple-section pipes with removable containers
for the residue and a pipe section made of wood being developed. The
slender smooth-faced pipe bowls provided porcelain painters with a
new means of fashioning miniature works of art.
The most beautiful source material for the chinoiseries so beloved
throughout Europe in the 18th century took the form of a sketchbook
by Johann Gregorius Höroldt (1696-1775) known as the “Schulz
Codex”. The pioneering spirits at MEISSEN ® had become adept at
transposing everyday scenes from the Middle Kingdom onto porcelain
back in the 1720s, at a time when there were just five colours
available for overglaze painting. They were experienced silversmiths
and enamellists and as such well versed in embellishing white surfaces
with golden silhouettes. It is these “Gold Chinese figures” from the
Manufactory’s early years to which this sumptuous replica of a porcelain
pipe refers. Such pipes were extraordinarily popular at the time,
the custom of smoking them peaking during the Biedermeier period.
It came to an end in around 1900 – good news for this splendid mix of
black ebony, white porcelain and sumptuous gold that combines over
300 years of craftsmanship to perfection.
Louis Quatorze (1638-1715) is famed for the pomp that attended
his every move but also for furthering the arts and sciences. 17th
century French culture blossomed during his reign.
He pursued an expansive foreign policy that enabled him to establish
France as a major power. The absolutist monarch, who ascended the
throne at the tender age of four, chose the sun as his crest. He sought
to emulate it by likewise becoming the centre of his universe. The “Sun
King” died on 1 September 1715 in Versailles. MEISSEN ® is marking
the 300th anniversary of his death with a small memorial in the form of
this consummately painted porcelain box. Finely detailed polychrome
miniatures in the style of figure, hunting and landscape painting bring
the past emphatically back to life. The front shows the Sun King and
his generals on horseback with a messenger bringing him news. The
back is decorated with the Apollo Fountain from the palace grounds
in Versailles. The right of the box is adorned by a medallion bearing a
portrait of the monarch and his signature, the left with the symbol of
the sun over the main gates at Versailles and the words “Roi Soleil”.
Crowning the receptacle is a royal-blue cover awash with golden Bourbon
lilies, emblem of his noble line. This is a miniature gem that injects
a little sparkle into the lives of us modern-day subjects.
Ich habe mir was
for his pleasure palace at Übigau, was likewise inspired by silverware.
The scent bottle’s relief-moulded basketweave pattern encircles two
gilt-framed cartouches. The bottle’s 275th anniversary is marked on the
obverse by a picture by the French painter Antoine Watteau (1684-
1721), whose work was extraordinarily popular during the Rococo.
Indeed, the Manufactory purchased a number of his etchings in 1741.
These have inspired our porcelain artists in manifold ways over and
over again ever since, cases in point being the modelling of the familiar
Four Seasons figures and richly detailed patterns redolent with coquettishness
such as this one. The legend to the etching on which it is based
translates roughly thus: “In withered love I find no joy. To find a new
one was my ploy“. The reverse of the scent bottle is embellished with
Old Style flower painting. This choice gem from the pleasure palace
accordingly symbolises two aspects of life crying out to be enjoyed: the
beauty of Nature and that of love.
„Commedia dell’arte“. Das effektvolle Dekor des barocken Dejeuners
zeigt nun eine außerordentlich sehenswerte Neu-Inszenierung.
This service was designed in 1741 to an order by Johann Ernst Gotzkowsky
(1710-1775), a Berlin businessman. He had a line in fashion
accessories and jewellery, ran factories and managed to become a
supplier to the court of Frederick the Great (1712-1786). He was a
middle-class self-made man who shared the consuming passion of
Augustus the Strong (1670-1733) for porcelain and the fine arts.
As was the fashion at the time, the service was decorated with relief
moulding and flowers. The cartouches on this re-interpreted version
enclose Commedia dell’Arte figures who throw long shadows against
a Venetian backdrop in the evening sun – a theme with a long tradition
at MEISSEN ® . The “Commedia dell’Arte”, a form of Italian folk
theatre that operates with masks and stock characters, was exceedingly
popular at Baroque courts. It was originally at home in Naples and
Venice, where travelling troupes would act out comedies on improvised
street stages.
The plot was invariably about figures from the lower echelons of
society, of which Harlequin was one, tussling with the upper classes
– figures who make complete fools of themselves on account of their
supercilious arrogance. The masks, body language and brightly coloured
costumes of the various characters inspired almost all great modellers
at MEISSEN ® , including Johann Joachim Kaendler (1706-1775)
and Peter Reinecke (1717-1768), to produce entire sets of such figures
in porcelain. The “Commedia dell’Arte” era ended with the French
Revolution. The feature-rich pattern on this Baroque dejeuner offers a
re-enactment that is uncommonly well worth seeing.
Die Chinoiserien Johann
Ehrenfried Stadlers sind
berühmt für ihre detailgetreue
Wiedergabe chinesischer
Szenen.
Johann Ehrenfried Stadler’s
chinoiseries are renowned for
their faithfully detailed
renditions of Chinese scenes.
Johann Ehrenfried Stadler (1701-1741) besondere Ausdruckskraft.
So verführt
These garden scenes, ably painted with the finest of brush-strokes on
this coffee set, simply ooze high spirits. A hand-daubed lilac ground
lends delicate motifs in the style of Johann Ehrenfried Stadler (1701-
1741) great expressive power.
Stadler acquired skills as a faience painter working with Eggebrecht
in Dresden before being appointed by Johann Gregorius Höroldt
(1696-1775) as a journeyman painter at MEISSEN ® in 1723. He was
soon looked upon as the chinoiserie specialist. With its sketchily drawn
lines, water-colour effect and asymmetrical compositions, his painting
reveals a proximity to the Japanese kakiemon style. His faces are left
white and outlined in iron-red. There is often a trellised fence in the
background, sometimes a pagoda roof or building.
Despite his never having set foot outside Europe, Stadler‘s Chinese
motifs are considered particularly “Chinese”. This is because he
always adhered very faithfully to the source material without adding
anything of his own. His figures generally wander through gardens
of exotic blooms carrying fans or shades in their hands. The motifs
on this coffee set relate to the rearing, feeding and nurturing of birds.
Cranes symbolise long life, chrysanthemums the life-force, and peonies
femininity in the Asian world. Birds in full flight and flowers in
magnificent bloom combine here to convey an unadulterated joy of life
that is underscored by the brilliant lilac ground as well as by the vibrant
orange and deep violet-blue of the painted detail. This is a set conducive
to pausing for thought during the daily coffee ceremony and thrilling
to such sumptuousness.
Singvögel auf Zweigen
Platin – das Service im
asiatischen Stil.
voller gelber Chrysanthemen sitzen.
It was the porcelain painter Wilhelm Wache (1860-1926), a master of
subtle, light-hearted hues, who created this Japanese rock, branch
and bird pattern, which so admirably suited the shape of Asian sake
vessels.
Colourful birds cavort between purple peonies on the decanter and
beakers. The tray is embellished with songbirds perched on sprays of
full yellow chrysanthemums. The consummate painting is sumptuously
underscored by gold and platinum. An opulent sun border in the
style of Wache is a theme unifying all the individual pieces. Peonies
stand for health, affluence and success in East and West alike. Yellow
chrysanthemums symbolise the sun and a long life. Their colour is that
of the Emperor. Hence, this choice little service is conducive to making
us happy even on its own. Enjoying a brandy or some other fine drop
from it is an act of some style and will truly crown any day: Cheers
and long may you live!
VASE „STEINBÖCKE“, KOBALTBLAU
VASE WITH “IBEXES” IN COBALT BLUE
Das Dekor wird als Negativ
angelegt. Hierbei skizziert der
Porzellanmaler mit feinen
Pinselstrichen Zweige und
Steinböcke im berühmten
Kobaltblau auf.
The pattern is laid on as a
negative. To this end, the
porcelain painter uses fine
brush-strokes to sketch
branches and ibexes onto the
famous cobalt blue.
This covered vase in the manner of the Palace Vases of MEISSEN ®
founder Augustus the Strong (1670-1733) elegantly combines
examples from three centuries of artistic creativity at the Manufactory.
Its shape dates from the mid-19th century; it is decorated in
cobalt-blue – the only underglaze colour available in Europe in the
Manufactory’s earliest years; the motifs, by turn, draw on a vase by
Otto Eduard Gottfried Voigt (1870-1949) from the art deco of the
1920s. They comprise four different renditions of an ibex embedded
in floral tendrils extending from the base to the cover. The pattern has
been produced in a particularly refined way as a negative: very lightly
shaded branches and ibexes within the white of the porcelain stand
out against a background coloured over in deep blue. Painting the blue
demands the greatest of dexterity, since the paint soaks deep into the
ceramic body with every brush-stroke and cannot be gone over. The
vase’s borders and finial have been sumptuously gilded so as to really
bring out the intense brilliance of the blue – a composition that harmoniously
combines over three hundred years of artistic traditions and
yet again demonstrates what a precious heritage there is waiting to be
re-interpreted in a contemporary vein in the Manufactory archives.
VASE „BLAUER BROKAT MIT
GOLDCHINESEN“
VASE “BLUE BROCADE WITH GILT CHINESE FIGURES”
Spezielle Glasurmaltechnik mit Goldüberlage:
Wie eingraviert wirken am Ende die
sogenannten „Goldchinesen“ und heben
sich glänzend von einer Fläche mattem,
23-karätigen Gold ab.
Special glaze painting technique with gilt
overlay: when complete, the gilt Chinese
figures seem to have been tooled in,
standing out brilliantly against a backing
of matt 23-carat gold.
Jahrhundert in ganz Europa
verbreitet hatte – vermittelt durch Meissener Porzellan ® . So genannte
This elegantly styled vase recalls the early MEISSEN ® “Palace
Vases” based on oriental models. Its splendid decoration has surprising
overtones of the Baroque even though the sumptuous gold
brocade painting, consummately combined with painting in underglaze
cobalt-blue.
This specialised glaze-painting technique with gilt overlay gives chinoiseries
after Johann Gregorius Höroldt (1796-1775) the appearance
of being engraved. These are taken from the “Schulz Codex”, a sketchbook
named after their collector, in which Höroldt captured scenes
from everyday life in China as source material for painters. Despite
being drafted from the perspective of a Central European who had
never set foot in the “Middle Kingdom”, they were central to the chinoiserie
craze that swept through Europe in the 18 th century - through
the agency of MEISSEN ® porcelain. The latter was already being adorned
with “Gold Chinese figures” in the 1720s, when there were just
five colours available for overglaze painting at the Manufactory. But
the pioneering spirits who first fashioned European porcelain were
experienced silversmiths and enamellists. They gilded white surfaces
with the silhouettes of chinoiseries which they then adroitly tooled and
polished with an agate stick.
Today’s Gold Chinese stand out brilliantly against an area of matt,
23-carat gold that is magnificently supplemented by decoration in
cobalt-blue. They successfully forge a link between the beginnings of
MEISSEN ® and modernity – also suitable as a work of art for purist
glass palaces.
SCHALE „FASAN AUF BLUMENKORB“
NACH MÜNCH-KHE
“PHEASANT ON BASKET OF FLOWERS” CHARGER
AFTER MÜNCH-KHE
Noch heute rekonstruieren die Meissener
Porzellanmaler Willi Münch-Khes
typische, beschwingte Malweise, hier in
kobaltblauer Unterglasurmalerei.
Meissen porcelain painters still try their
hand at reconstructing the flowing style of
painting typical of Willi Münch-Khe, here
in underglaze cobalt-blue.
Viele phantasievolle Grafiken in seiner typischen, beschwingten
In
MEISSEN ® is honouring the work of the artist Willi Münch-Khe
(1885-1961), an innovative crosser of boundaries between styles and
idioms, with a stylised golden pheasant on an opulent basket of flowers.
He lent each of his works a complex and invariably rather mystifying
slant as a means of transcending convention – including in MEISSEN ® .
Sculptor, graphic artist and painter in one, he produced vessels and
patterns straddling art deco and art nouveau in 1912 and 1913. He made
a surprising switch to humorous literary figures in the 1920s and, thereafter,
to conventional sculptures of cute baby animals.
The MEISSEN ® archives contain a great many fanciful works of
graphic art in his inimitably vivacious style of painting: floral motifs,
ornament, figures and never-ending birds of paradise symbolise the
beauty and uniqueness of Nature in art nouveau. His “Wonder Birds”
are all about transcending the severity of the old world. Flowing lines
painted in underglaze cobalt blue and subtly picked out in gold likewise
generate a sense of total momentum. Various forms of ornament
complementing the motif appear more frolicsome than framing. The
clash of clean-lined composition and lack of severity injects a singular
charm into the motif, just as the unconventional artist Willi Münch-
Khe intended.
The pug dog is more than simply a merry companion. From the
mid-1730s at the very latest, it was seen to symbolise loyalty, dependability
and steadfastness.
That was certainly the belief held by those who joined a masonic
lodge despite the threat of excommunication by Pope Clement XII.
Frederick Count Rutowski, an illegitimate son of Augustus the Strong,
set up a Masonic association called “To the three white eagles” at the
City Palace in Dresden in 1738. Two years later, the Archbishop of
Cologne, Clemens August of Bavaria (1700-1761), inaugurated the
“Order of the Pug”. Catholic women were also admitted. The customs
of the lodge accorded with the gallantry of the Rococo and, as a result,
soon caught on at royal courts and universities. Adherents called themselves
pugs and wore pug medallions around their necks. The advent
of the Order also led to a veritable glut of decorative motifs depicting
pugs. MEISSEN ® came up with no end of pug figurines under the
direction of Johann Joachim Kaendler (1706-1775), as well as diverse
boxes surmounted by figures of pugs. The Order was banned in 1748
and fell into oblivion. Its symbol has lived on in many forms, however,
and can still win over our hearts today. As the German comic Loriot
so tellingly put it: “A life without pugs is conceivable but would be
quite pointless.”
KANNE MIT HUND
POT WITH LITTLE DOG
Das Hündchen nach
Michel Victor Acier – Symbol
eines treuen Freundes.
Little dog after Michel
Victor Acier – symbol of a
loyal friend.
Jahrhundert in
West-Europa immer beliebter.
Kannen serviert – besonders stilvoll in feinstem Porzellan. Seit dem
letzten Viertel des 18. Jahrhunderts kamen klassizistische Geschirrformen
in Mode, deren strenge Formensprache oft durch plastische Verzierungen
mit mythologischen Figuren, Blumengewinden oder Symbolen
der Freundschaft und Zuneigung aufgelockert wurde. Besonders
Herzen erobert.
The flourishing of maritime trade in the 18th century also stoked
the popularity of tea-drinking in Western Europe, be it in Britain,
France or Germany.
The beverage is traditionally served from bulbous pots – to particularly
stylish effect in finest porcelain – to bring out its full aroma. The
final quarter of the 18 th century saw classicist vessel shapes come into
fashion whose severe formal idiom was often toned down by means of
moulded ornamentation involving mythological figures, floral scrolls
or symbols of friendship and affection. The artist Michel Victor Acier
(1736-1799) produced a particularly charming example of this with his
little dog on the cover of a teapot dated 1780. From 1764 onwards,
the Frenchman, who had studied Sculpture at the Académie Royale
in Paris, tapped the fashion of the day in his home country to set new
trends at MEISSEN ® . Present-day artists at the Manufactory faced a
huge challenge due to the decorative source material for his original
pot no longer being available. The clean-line styling is brought out by
stripes in royal blue, a colour that was only perfected in such intensity
at MEISSEN ® a short while before the shape, and choice gold. The
stripes all converge at the top of the ball, thus drawing attention to the
little dog – symbol of a loyal friend cum popular figure with the aid of
which this rare collector’s item will conquer people’s hearts in no time.
PAGODE MIT PAPAGEI
PAGOD WITH PARROT
Mimik, Gestik und Körperhaltung sowie der
Faltenwurf der Kleidung zeigen die typische
Handschrift Kaendlers.
Facial expressions, gestures, bearing and fall of
folds are all unmistakeably Kaendler.
Fine-looking porcelain ousted more than just silver from 18th-century
dining tables. The sugar-based “subtleties” that once adorned
banqueting tables were likewise increasingly replaced by “white
gold”.
The 1753 “Inventory Of All Porcelains” owned by the Saxon Imperial
Count Heinrich von Brühl (1700-1763) already listed some four
thousand sculptural items for the decoration of tables. And artists from
the Meissen Manufactory were to design a great many more in the
years to follow. Johann Joachim Kaendler (1706-1775) modelled his
Chinese man with fan and parrot in 1760. “Chinoiseries” had been en
vogue since the beginning of the 18th century. Painting and sculptures,
wall-hangings, works in silk and countless novels conjured up an
exotic fairytale realm that was revered as an Eldorado of good customs,
religion and administration by Enlightenment theorists such as Voltaire
(1694-1778). Our Chinese man is completely relaxed and smiling
happily as he sits with his parrot. His convincing facial expression,
gestures and bearing, the fall of folds on his kimono with its exquisitely
painted flowers, all betray the typical hallmark of Kaendler the great
artist – together with a friendly composure that we, too, would do well
to display more often in our day-to-day lives.
PHÖNIX-SCHWINGE VON
JÖRG DANIELCZYK
PHOENIX PINION BY JÖRG DANIELCZYK
Gibt viel Raum für Interpretation:
die moderne Skulptur von
Jörg Danielczyk bei den
Anfängen ihrer Bemalung.
Plenty of room for interpretation:
modern sculpture by Jörg
Danielczyk in the early stages
of being painted.
Wings and pinions are a subject of special focus for Jörg Danielczyk,
Sculptor-in-Chief at MEISSEN ® , in his discourse with modern
forms. He finds it particularly engaging to sound out the multitude
of aesthetic and sculptural meanings they acquire when divorced
from their physical context.
Thus this momentously upward-striving sculpture combines the
four elements of fire, earth, water and air: it resembles a flame as well
as showing the face of the Earth, the flow of water and an up-draught
of air. It also alludes to the wings of the phoenix, that mystical bird that
is burned up in the red of the dawn sky and emerges rejuvenated from
the ashes - a symbol of immortality in late Antiquity, of resurrection in
the Christian world. It is fascinating to note just how many interpretations
concrete form admits of once it is stripped of its material point of
reference. Our imagination is constantly being winged away – a choice
item that offers plenty to talk about and will never cease to inspire.
MODEL VON JÖRG DANIELCZYK
MODEL BY JÖRG DANIELCZYK
Die faszinierende Welt der
Haute Couture und edlen
Joaillerie, festgehalten auf
Meissener Porzellan ® .
The fascinating world of
haute couture and refined
jewellery, captured on
Meissen Porcelain ® .
Artist and Sculptor-in-Chief Jörg Danielczyk takes up a major
MEISSEN ® theme with his “Model” figurine. Fashion has been a
popular motif in porcelain figure sculpture throughout the ages
– from the Rococo pastoral look through the primly middle-class
clothing of the Biedermeier to the flowing garments of art nouveau.
And MEISSEN ® has long since realised the potential there is to be
tapped from the immeasurable wealth of its over 300-year-old archive
of colours, moulds and models. This serves MEISSEN ® as a basis and
source of inspiration for the manufacture of many other everyday luxury
items in addition to choice porcelain.
Jörg Danielczyk was stimulated to address himself to the subject
of fashion when visiting that mecca of haute couture, Paris. The evening-gowned
model is a product of his imagination. The choice gems
she parades are as in the MEISSEN ® jewellery collection. Her corset
dress likewise echoes the style of the new couture collection from
MEISSEN ® and in this way forges a link between the oldest and the
youngest forms of art from the Manufactory: choicest porcelain meets
top-notch fashion.
Dresden artist Hermann Hultzsch (1837-1905) captures the homecoming
of a young fisherman in a porcelain sculpture he created for
MEISSEN ® in 1885.
His net cast over his shoulder, the young man eyes his successful
catch. He seems to be pausing to ponder briefly on his way home.
Quite unlike any figure in porcelain from the Baroque, the work of this
freelance sculptor who went on to become a Professor at the Dresden
Art Academy is a study in focused tranquillity. There is something
impressionist in the way it spurns intemperate emotion in favour of
temperate motion. The subject’s body outlines and the fall of the folds
of his cape are modelled in a well-nigh painterly manner. The play
of light and shade is ingeniously underscored by consummate flows
of colour in the glaze. The figure of the young fisherman reflects the
ideal of simple beauty through the grace of his movements and, in so
doing, presages the advent of art nouveau. This choice little porcelain
sculpture is proof, at any rate, of just how much everyday moments
have to offer in artistic terms.
diem!“
So many international personalities have cast a gaze over the Elbe
from “Brühl Terrace” in Dresden that it has come to be dubbed the
“Balcony of Europe”. It was opened up to the public 200 years ago
and augmented by an imposing flight of steps.
The sculptor Johannes Schilling (1828-1910) enhanced the magnificent
Baroque ensemble in around 1861 with his allegorical “Times of
Day” figure groups, bronze versions of which now adorn each corner
of the steps. The work turned out to be the sculptor’s artistic breakthrough,
leading the famous architect Gottfried Semper (1803-1879)
to employ him for the “Panther Quadriga” in the portal of his Opera
House. He subsequently received numerous further commissions from
throughout Europe.
A windswept, goddess-like creature accompanied by two children
symbolises Morning on the top step of the flight. A smaller copy consummately
produced in porcelain at MEISSEN ® in 2013 is every bit
as gracious and beautiful. Located opposite her is Noon in the form of
a bearded young man with a halo in his curly hair. He holds a laurel
wreath up with his right hand. The boy reaching out for it by his side
symbolises the striving for fame. The second youth, by contrast, digs
the ground with a spade without looking up. He symbolises the nondescript
day-to-day toil that yields the fruit Noon is holding in his left
hand. The work of the great artist Johannes Schilling has lost none of
its symbolic thrust 150 years on: great art in a small format that places
the course of time before our eyes and calls upon us to “carpe diem!”
In MEISSEN ®
Early porcelain artists at MEISSEN ® transformed the fenghuang
bird, a mythical Chinese creature and auspicious symbol, into an
animal more commonly found in native climes, the hen.
This pot, which entered the Manufactory’s range of shapes back in
1735, is a typical example of the fanciful porcelain ware that featured in
the extravagant decorative settings for the opulent dining tables of the
Baroque. It also reveals how items imported from East Asia inspired
Saxon artists to come up with interpretations and forms of expression
all their own. The fenghuang guards over part of the Imperial Palace
in China, and it embodies elements of both the male and female. At
MEISSEN ® the pot was created in the shape of both a cock, a model
re-issued as a limited-edition artwork in 2010, and its female counterpart
the hen. Whether it can protect our houses is a moot point, but
it definitely brings happiness and joy: happiness at holding an early
porcelain masterpiece in our hands and joy at its bizarre shape, which
is likely to elicit a little smile from anyone.
Windhunde waren am
Tier hier Modell gestanden
endgültig überliefert.
Greyhounds were very
popular at the Tsarist
Court in the 18th century.
It is not however known
for certain which animal
this particular one was
modelled on.
Man darf
A moment ago our dog was snoozing on its cushion. Now it alertly
pops up its head, ready to go into action in an instant. It is, after all,
protecting any tiny treasures that might be kept in the porcelain
box.
Dog and box were created by Johann Daniel Schöne (1767-1843), a
master of European art of the Enlightenment and, from 1783, employed
as a modeller at MEISSEN ® . He succeeded in exactly capturing the
moment between ease and tension and in this way imbuing his tiny
porcelain figure with scintillating vibrancy. It can be assumed he had
some experience in dealing with dogs. The box he fashioned in 1833
has strong overtones of a greyhound that Johann Joachim Kaendler
(1706-1775) had modelled to a drawing just under 80 years earlier to
a commission by the Russian Count Grigori Orlov (1734-1783). The
borzoi breed of Russian wolfhound had been very popular at the Tsarist
Court since the late Middle Ages. The Russian aristocracy went hunting
in the woods with whole packs of them in the18th century. In 1776,
Orlov arranged for Kaendler to produce a monument in MEISSEN ®
to his favourite dog. The Manufactory also created a number of items
for the Tsarina Catherine the Great (1729-1796). There is no record of
which animal it was that sat for Johann Daniel Schöne. What is for sure,
though, is that he produced a very authentic copy, as can be seen in the
dog’s expression and body posture – from its snout, to its slightly pricked-up
ears to its crossed paws. The filigree painting underscores the
sculpture’s powerful allure. Our dog richly deserves to be enthroned
on a cushion edged in real gold.
PANTHER NACH ESSER
PANTHER AFTER ESSER
Eigentlich war Essers
„Lupardus“ Teil eines
großen Tafelservices. Nur
50 Objekte dieses
Meisterwerks werden nun
neu aufgelegt.
Esser’s “Lupardus” was
originally part of a large
tableware service. This
masterpiece is being
re-issued in a strictly
limited edition of 50.
What majesty and power there is in this recumbent panther! It
appears to be evading the beholder’s gaze with its slightly inclined
head. The sculptor Max Esser (1885-1945) ably underscores the
quintessentially feline quality of this animal – unapproachable yet
ready to pounce – with this subtle nuance.
His figures, with the aid of which he took the tradition of animal
statuary established at MEISSEN ® by Johann Joachim Kaendler (1706-
1775) to new heights from the 1920s onwards, are regarded as masterpieces
of art deco porcelain.
Max Esser joined the Manufactory in 1919 following a sculptor’s
apprenticeship, undergraduate studies and a course of training with
the great animal sculptor August Gaul (1840-1910), took charge of the
Master Studio in 1923 and was made a Professor in 1924. Like many
sculptors of his age he turned to producing figures of animals – possibly
because there was a greater degree of freedom and ease involved in
portraying them rather than people, in respect of whom tradition and
ethics always play a part too. Not that Max Esser’s panther “Lupardus”
is devoid of such qualities. The artist modelled it in the 1920s as part
of a major tableware service citing themes from “Reynard the Fox”,
a work by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749–1832). The panther
“Lupardus” is a confidant and member of the family of the King who
fails to see through the fox’s deceitful ways. It only plays a minor part
in the actual fable. Set off by the ensemble of figures in this choice tableware
service, however, our panther certainly does play a huge role in
the guise of this superb sculpture.
The tradition of animal
upheld in MEISSEN ®
workshops to the present day.
Our ram is down on its haunches, unsure of what is to come, and
returns the beholder’s gaze in a state of tense alertness. Its expressive
posture is evidence of just how ably the sculptor Max Esser (1885-
1945) revived the tradition of animal statuary begun at MEISSEN ®
by Johann Joachim Kaendler (1706-1775) from the 1920s onwards.
the wily fox Reynard and wrongly condemned to death for murdering
“Lampe”, the naive hare.
Fortunately, the figures from this tableware service can also be staged
in quite different ways. The ram may partly be a victim of its own
unthinking devotion in the fable – but it definitely plays a heroic role
as this magisterial sculpture.
SCHWANENTERRINE MIT „ALLIANZ-
WAPPEN DES GRAFEN BRÜHL“
SWAN SERVICE TUREEN WITH “COUNT BRÜHL’S
ALLIANCE COAT-OF-ARMS”
Neben Figuren der griechischen Mythologie
durften auch Putten auf einem
barocken Prachtstück wie der „Schwanenterrine“
nicht fehlen.
Cherubs were just as much a prerequisite
for a Baroque gem such as the “Swan
Service Tureen” as were figures from
Greek mythology.
This tureen’s circular bellied shape provides plenty of space for the
artistic skills of modellers and porcelain painters at MEISSEN ® . A
naked nymph on the back of a dolphin, her legs crossed, doubles up
as a grip on top of a cover completely moulded with a pattern of
shells in relief.
The tureen – part of the greatest masterpiece of Baroque porcelain
art, the “Swan Service” – is attributable to Johann Friedrich Eberlein
(1695-1749), who notes in his work report for October 1742: “Made 1
woman lying naked with a fish for the above tureen.” But cherubs were
just as indispensable as mythological figures to any seriously Baroque
tableware service. Using them as handles, Eberlein portrays them riding
on fish from whose mouths snails, crabs, seashells and flower-encrusted
festoons issue forth. These run right round the tureen to the alliance
coat-of-arms of the ordering party Count Brühl, which form the central
point of focus. It is, after all, his elitist taste we have to thank for
the splendours of the Swan Service. The tureen is testimony to the fact
that each individual piece constitutes a work of art in its own right that
would flatter any table. Good job seeing as it will be quite some time
before the service is available in its entirety again from MEISSEN ® .
BALUSTER VASE IN POLYCHROME ON A GILT GROUND
Eines der ältesten Werke
der Manufaktur besticht
durch kostbare Goldfonds
und feine plastische
Beläge.
One of the oldest works
from the Manufactory is
set off by a sumptuous gilt
ground and finely
moulded sprigging.
Irmingers.
One of the oldest pieces in the MEISSEN ® collection, experiencing
a dazzling renaissance here, dates back to between 1710 and 1720
and bears the signature of the court silversmith Jakob Irminger
(1635-1724).
He it was who conceived the characteristic artistic idiom of the earliest
porcelain from MEISSEN ® . It is very plain to see from the shape
of, and relief-moulding on this covered goblet that the Manufactory
derived artistic inspiration from pewter and silver ware early on. Irminger
first judiciously chased models in copper in his workshop and then
sent these to Albrechtsburg Castle, where he personally supervised
their execution in Böttger stoneware. The vessel that has now been reinterpreted
in finest porcelain is decorated with restraint and deference
to the whole, giving it a stylish, completed feel. Its choice gilt ground
possesses a classy metallic sheen echoing the precursors of porcelain
art whilst also emphasizing its shape. The finely moulded sprigging is
quietly traced in sepia. The overall composition harmoniously fuses
shape and decoration, wholly in keeping with Irminger’s own approach
to design.
WANDGEMÄLDE „PFINGSTROSEN“
“PEONIES” WALL PLAQUE
)Every brush-stroke has to be spot-on in
underglaze painting, as the paint is immediately
absorbed by the ceramic body and
there is no way of correcting mistakes.
Korrektur.
The painter Otto Eduard Gottfried Voigt (1870-1949) committed
delicate Chinese tree peonies to a MEISSEN ® wall plate in the 1920s.
They are regarded as a symbol of wealth and happiness in Chinese
culture, whilst in Japan they are also ciphers for the lives of the
emperors.
There was a time when peonies were so costly that only the aristocracy
could adorn their gardens with them. The artist may in the
first instance have been intent on authentically mirroring the flowers
as they open up. Voigt created numerous art nouveau and flower patterns
for MEISSEN ® from the period of transition to the 20th century
onwards – a major artistic challenge when the painting is done in highfire
or underglaze colours. Unlike the gouache technique he adopts
when drafting his designs, each brush-stroke has to be perfect, as the
paint immediately sinks deep into the ceramic body and cannot be gone
over. In his re-interpretation of the motif, our porcelain painter Horst
Bretschneider first engraved the floral shapes into the unfired porcelain.
This gives the picture a delightfully structured finish. Additional chromatic
highlights in overglaze enamels imbue it with a very distinctive
magic that, luckily, will neither pale nor wither nor pass away.
„SEEROSEN UND EISVÖGEL“
WALL PLAQUE WITH “WATER LILIES AND KINGFISHERS”
Der farbenprächtige Eisvogel steht im
Mittelpunkt des Wandbildes von Horst
Bretschneider. Die zarten Blätter in
Goldmalerei setzen künstlerische Akzente.
Horst Bretschneider’s wall plaque centres
on a gaily coloured kingfisher. Tender
gilded leaves create artistic points of focus.
Wandschale in Szene.
Der Künstler Voigt, der seit Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts zahlreiche
In seiner
In Aufglasurund
Goldmalerei setzt er zusätzliche Glanzpunkte. Besonders raffiniert
The painter Otto Eduard Gottfried Voigt (1870-1949) brought a
gaily coloured kingfisher, of the kind that can occasionally be observed
in the meadows along the river Elbe, to life on a MEISSEN ® wall
plate in the 1920s.
Voigt, an artist who produced several consummate art nouveau
and floral patterns for MEISSEN ® from the start of the 20th century
onwards, captures a wondrously perceived moment of Nature with
this motif. The shimmering bird lurks noiselessly in branches bordering
a pond full of white water lilies, ready to dive down at the right
moment to catch a fish – a motif that poses a major artistic challenge
when painted in high-fire or underglaze colours. The paint soaks deep
into the ceramic body as soon as it is brushed on and there is no way
of correcting mistakes. In his re-interpretation on a wall plaque, our
porcelain painter Horst Bretschneider has supplemented the motif with
engraved detail that gives the picture a consummately structured finish
once it has been glazed. He creates additional sparkle with spots of
overglaze painting and gilding. Leaves in various shades of gold blend
in with the arrangement in a particularly refined and filigree manner.
A dazzling performance by the little bird. Good job it can’t fly away.
single petal by hand and then joins them
all together to form a flower.
kommen scheint.
The hand-thrown vase shape, which is only being produced for this
limited-edition item, embodies to a unique degree the entire tradition
of porcelain art as it has evolved over the past 300 years and
more at MEISSEN ® .
Heads of hydrangea that look startlingly real reach out into the space
around the vessel. Each of their tiny petals has been modelled by hand
before going into forming the finished flower-balls. The chromatic idiom
establishes an ingenious bond between shape and mouldings. In a
departure from the usual approach to colouring figures, the moulded
elements are rounded off by finely executed naturalistic painting on the
body of the vase in addition to being picked out in colour. Capricious
clusters of consummate gilding impart great sparkle to the enchanting
flower-balls. The vase’s form is elegantly underscored by a silvery-grey
ground that oscillates between light and dark and endearingly sets off
the floral decoration, which seems to have come straight out of some
summer garden.
AFTER J. R. HENTSCHEL
Auch Generationen von
Malern nach Johannes
Rudolf Hentschel
übertragen die Liebe
zur Elblandschaft auf
Porzellan.
Generations of painters
since Johannes Rudolf
Hentschel have continued
to transfer their love of the
Elbe countryside to
porcelain.
Albrechtsburg Castle in Meissen as reflected in the waters of the
river Elbe is the theme of this porcelain plaque, a further in the series
of small works of art for collectors by Johannes Rudolf Hentschel
(1872-1951).
Along with his brother Julius Konrad Hentschel (1872-1907), who
modelled the famous “Hentschel Children”, he was one of the most
important exponents of art nouveau at MEISSEN ® . Several of the decorative
designs authored by the two brothers, including the “Wing Pattern”,
became icons of art nouveau in Germany. The pictures Johannes
Rudolf Hentschel produced bear witness to his love of the Elbe riverscapes
in which he spent his free time. They are scenes of tranquillity in
which light bathes the landscape in colours that take on a very special
magic for the beholder. Our porcelain painters manage to bring out
this heightened atmosphere to particularly expressive effect through
the interplay of underglaze and overglaze colours. Whereas the majority
of Hentschel’s pictures are imbued with a certain melancholy, he
portrays the oldest castle in Germany in dazzling sunlight. This was
where Augustus the Strong (1670-1733) set up Europe’s first porcelain
manufactory in 1710, two years after the invention of “white gold”
was first documented. Hentschel’s optimistic impression of Meissen
was to be shown to be true: following the MEISSEN ® Manufactory’s
tercentenary celebrations, the porcelain castle now once again shines
forth as of old.
SCHALE „FLORALE GOLDRANKE“,
BÖTTGERSTEINZEUG®
“FLORAL TENDRIL IN GILT” CHARGER,
In
Made in Böttger stoneware, the material with which it all began,
this opulently gilded dish achieves an elegant symbiosis of tradition
and modernity.
The reddish-brown ware, named after its inventor Johann Friedrich
Böttger (1682-1719), was the first porcelain in Europe, heralding a 300-
year MEISSEN ® success story. Its stylistic idiom echoes that of unfussy
utilitarian objects from the 18th century and demonstrates that, even
300 years on, good design can still outlive time.
Its sophisticated painted decoration in 23-carat gold has been applied
with magisterial verve and finished with delicately moulded outlines.
Trailing flowers hug the contours of the piece as it tapers inwards. It
is through this exquisite interaction that the awesome art of porcelain
painting is made manifest. The dish derives its great articulacy from
the contrast between formal simplicity rendered through clay and the
sumptuousness of its ornamental gilding: a thing of pure splendour!
With his idiosyncratic, deeply artistic approach, Max Esser (1885-
1945) breathed new life into the tradition of animal statuary begun
by Johann Joachim Kaendler (1706-1775) at MEISSEN ® .
He worked for the Manufactory from 1919 onwards after completing
a sculptor’s apprenticeship and a course of studies with the celebrated
animal modeller August Gaul (1869-1921) at the Academy in
Berlin. He became head of the Master Studio in 1923 and was raised to
the rank of Professor in 1924. His forte was the stylised portrayal of
animals - usually caught in some typical act, as in the case of his familiar
Otter, which won him a grand prix at the 1937 World’s Fair in Paris,
or his Seagull in Flight.
The elephant he modelled in Böttger Stoneware ® in the 1920s –
contemplatively at rest like some Buddha – was surprisingly different,
however. The Manufactory’s oldest material had just been re-invented
in a new composition that encouraged artists at MEISSEN ® to try their
hand at modern forms of artistic expression. Esser injects a certain
momentum into his sculpture despite its static posture, as is his wont.
He does this by contrasting large, gently curving body sections with
finely elaborated detail such as eyes and folds of skin. Calm as our
thick-skinned friend may be, it exudes a vibrancy that the beholder
would like to get to the bottom of – which is why this little work of
art manages to fascinate us over and over again.
KNÖCHELSPIELERIN
KNUCKLEBONE PLAYER
Abbild einer antiken
Mädchenfigur aus
Marmor, von MEISSEN ®
in Biskuitporzellan
verewigt.
Copy of an ancient Greek
figure of a girl in marble,
immortalised by MEIS-
SEN® in bisque porcelain.
melancholischer Abwesenheit.
The Ancient Roman original of this girl figure can be viewed at the
Pergamon Museum in Berlin. Christian Gottfried Jüchtzer (1752-
1812) modelled his small “Knucklebone Player” at MEISSEN ® in
1798 by taking a cast of the ancient marble sculpture from the second
century A.D., then held in the Mengs Collection at Dresden.
Jüchtzer had joined the Manufactory as a repairer’s apprentice in
1769, worked closely with Johann Joachim Kaendler (1706-1775)
and Victor Acier (1736-1799) and himself became Master Modeller
at MEISSEN ® in 1781. Thorough scrutiny of holdings in the Electoral
Ancient Art Collection led to his producing masterful copies in
bisque porcelain that were exceedingly popular in the classicist age. He
was particularly strong on single self-contained figurines like this one
whose quietly fashioned contours accord with the classicist ideal. The
melon-coiffure of the figure, entered in the model copybook as the
“Florentine Girl”, was very common at the time of her origination. So,
too, was her tunic with its ample fall of folds, following the outlines of
her body in accordance with the classicist ideal.
The initial impression gained of the girl being immersed in the game
she is playing is deceptive. Rather than being focused on the knucklebones,
her gaze is actually one of melancholy distraction.
die Individualität der Entstehung. Die Maße der Objekte
MEISSEN ® is a synonym for high-value, handcrafted art objects in
porcelain. Every piece is unique in its form and décor and reflects the
style of the modeller and painter; minor deviations from the pictures
in the catalogue only underline that these works are made individually
by hand. The measurements of the objects are also subject to minor
variations due to the ceramic process.
