Vom Freizeitsport zum Profigeschäft
Beach-Volleyball galt seit seiner Entstehung an den Stränden
der USA lange Zeit als Trend- oder Freizeitsport. Heute wird der
Sport sowohl von Profis als auch von zahlreichen Amateuren ausgeübt.
Beach-Volleyball ist räumlich nicht auf natürliche Strände
beschränkt. Auch in Innenstädten, die weit vom Meer entfernt
liegen, existieren gute Spielfelder. Die WM 2007 fand sogar im
über 1’000 m hoch gelegenen Gstaad in der Schweiz statt. Durch
die zunehmende mediale Beachtung wird Beachvolleyball immer
beliebter. Neben den Hobbyspielern nutzen auch viele in der
Halle aktive Profis die Sommerpause zum Spiel im Sand. Einige
von ihnen überbrücken damit nur die Zeit zwischen dem Saisonende
und dem Beginn der Vorbereitung, andere starten gar mit
sportlichen Ambitionen bei Turnieren.

since 1998 with the exception of 2003, when the event was
elaborately staged at Zurich Central Station, garnering public exposure
and media attention. Switzerland’s beach volleyball capital however is
Gstaad. This upmarket resort in the Bernese Oberland hosted the 2007
World Championships and is the regular venue of a World Tour Major
event.
After the Germans, the Swiss men are the most successful nation to
compete at European Championships. The lion’s share of this success
is arguably due to two brothers – Martin and Paul Laciga – who won the
title in three consecutive years between 1998 and 2000 after coming
third in 1997 and reached the final a further two times. After losing to the
Laciga brothers in Getxo, Markus Egger and Sascha Heyer won the 2001
rematch and went on to claim a third (2003) and a second (2004) place.
Patrick Heuscher and Stefan Kobel added another three podiums to the
Swiss tally and also won Switzerland’s sole Olympic medal to date at
the 2004 Athens Games. Paul Laciga reached the World Championship
final twice – with his brother in 1999 and with Heyer in 2005, losing to
Brazilian teams both times.
The Swiss women have yet to claim an Olympic or World Championship
podium. Simone Kuhn was involved in all three European-level medals
– in 2001, she and Nicole Schnyder-Benoit reached the final (they then
went on to win the 2004 Timmendorf event). Simone Kuhn and Nadine
Zumkehr scored bronze in 2009 and came third at the 2012 World
Tour tournament in Gstaad. And at the 2014 European Championships
in Cagliari (Sardinia), Tanja Goricanec and Tanja Hüberli claimed silver
for Switzerland.
Switzerland’s country federation Swiss Volley opened its National Centre
of Excellence in 2009, with the aim of supporting and promoting the best
talent and securing the country’s status as one of the top-performing
nations.
Siegeszug durch Europa
Erst Ende der 1980er Jahre kam Beach-Volleyball über den Atlantik so
richtig nach Europa. Und dann ging es Schlag auf Schlag: 1993 veranstaltete
die südspanische Stadt Almeria die erste Europameisterschaft.
Bei den Olympischen Spielen 1996 in Atlanta war Beach-Volleyball erstmals
als offizielle Disziplin vertreten. Ein Jahr später, 1997, fand die erste
offizielle Weltmeisterschaft in Los Angeles statt. Spätestens ab diesem
Zeitpunkt entwickelten die verantwortlichen Verbände immer professionellere
Strukturen. Die USA und Brasilien dominierten zu Beginn das
sportliche und kommerzielle Geschehen, nach und nach wuchs aber die
Konkurrenz weltweit. Deutschland, Australien und China gehörten bald
auch zu den Medaillengewinnern. Heute werden, neben den offiziellen
Meisterschaften, weltweit pro Jahr vier sogenannte Major-Turniere sowie
je sechs Grand-Slams und Opens veranstaltet.
Erfolgreiche Schweizer Beach-Volleyballszene
1992 fand in Luzern die erste Schweizermeisterschaft statt, wodurch diese
Sportart ihren Siegeszug in der Schweiz antrat. Bereits ein Jahr später
entwickelte sich eine Turnierserie, die in den nächsten Jahren kontinuierlich
ausgebaut wurde. Seit 1998 ist der Bundesplatz in Bern der feste
Austragungsort für die Schweizermeisterschaften. 2003 wurde dieses
Finalturnier ausnahmsweise und medial aufwändig im Zürcher Hauptbahnhof
veranstaltet. In der Schweiz hat sich Gstaad als Beachvolleyball-
Hochburg entwickelt. Der noble Ferienort im Saanetal war Gastgeber
der Weltmeisterschaft 2007 und ist ständiger Austragungsort eines Turniers
der World Tour (Major-Turnier).
Die Schweizer Männer sind nach Deutschland die erfolgreichste Nation
bei Europameisterschaften. Den grössten Anteil an diesem Erfolg gebührt
wohl den Brüdern Martin und Paul Laciga, die das Turnier von 1998
bis 2000 dreimal in Folge gewinnen konnten.

From leisure pastime to professional sport
After its low-key beginnings on the beaches of California, beach
volleyball was long considered a trendy leisure game, but the
sport as it is known today is practised by both pro players and
many keen amateurs. Beach volleyball is in no way restricted to
natural beaches – it can also be played on sand courts in city
centres far from the sea. Case in point – the Swiss Alpine resort
of Gstaad, which lies at more than 1000 metres above sea level,
hosted the 2007 World Championships. Growing media exposure
is boosting beach volleyball’s popularity. Many indoor volleyball
pros now take advantage of the summer recess to play
on sand. Some are just bridging the gap between the end of the
season and the start of next season’s preparation phase; others
enter tournaments with aspirations to win.
