Cruise festival
When the port of Hamburg is bathed in a blue light,
the Queen Mary 2 parades along the River Elbe
and visitors from around the world stroll along the
waterfront by the landing stages, the Hamburg Cruise
Days are under way. This year’s event takes place
from 11 to 13 September.
n 2014, the Hamburg Cruise Days attracted
600,000 visitors. Katja Derow, Managing Director
of PR agency red roses communications and coorganiser
of the event, is delighted by such figures,
which demonstrate its resounding success – for the
city of Hamburg, which launched the Hamburg Cruise
Days in 2008, for the shipping companies presenting
their vessels and cruise offerings, and of course for the
public at large “Hamburg is crazier about cruises than
any other city in the world,” says Derow. And that’s why
the citizens of Hamburg enjoy the September Cruise
Days to the full. But they aren’t the only ones to do so:
some 52 per cent of visitors now hail from other regions
of Germany, or even from as far afield as the USA. Many
of them stay for the full three days of the event.
It’s a wise decision, as the Hamburg Cruise Days
have become a real cruise festival, and not just because
an entire fleet of cruise liners converges on the port of
Hamburg for the occasion. “That in itself takes some
doing,” says Derow, since the shipping companies plan
their itineraries some two to three years in advance. Of
course Derow is delighted that the Hamburg Cruise Days
have now become a fixture in the calendars of many of
these companies, and she’s looking forward to welcoming
eight particularly famous vessels this year, including the
MS Europa, the Queen Mary 2 and the AIDAbella.
But above all, the Cruise Days provide a lively and
varied experience on land, with a 4.2-kilometre stretch
of the waterfront devoted to the event this year. Each
shipping company has its own area in which to present
and promote its range of holidays. Not only will cruise
fans get their money’s worth, but golfers, spa-lovers
