First English edition. „The author, an Austrian Jesuit, was sent
to Paraguay in 1749. He worked among the Guarany, and later

among the Abipones, a tribe living in the Paraguayan Chaco, who
are now extinct. When the Society of Jesus was expelled from
South America, he returned to Austria where he published this
famous book. The first volume contains a description of Paraguay,
the war against the „mamelucos“ and other historical events. The
last two volumes are concerned with the Abipones.“ (Borba de
Moraes 267). – „Highly eulogized by Coleridge (whose daughter
translated it from the Latin), Southey, Charles Lamb, Lowndes,
and Brunet. It is almost the only work relating to this almost
unknown tribe of Indians, and it is a memorial of nearly sixteen
years of suffering and toil amongst a most savage race.“ (Sabin
20414). „The work is now considered to be of immense value,
both for its ethnolgical observations and as a history of the
Jesuit state of Paraguay.“ (Howgego).

ausführlich Lebensweise, Sprache, Handwerk, Bräuche und Religion
zahlreicher Indianerstämme. „A category of the Indians of
