Large octavo. Contemp. half calf. – Döhne (1811–1879) was a
lexicographer and philologist from the Berlin Missionary Society,
who was responsible for compiling this dictionary, after spending
20 years documenting the language and dialects. “By far the most
comprehensive work of this description issued up to this period.”
(Mendelssohn). “Combines both Xhosa and Zulu, but shows how
a dictionary ought to be arranged as regards etymology and colloquial
examples”. (Shapera). – Binding with some signs of wear,
corners bumped. Very slightly browned throughout. On the whole,
a good copy of a scarce book.

giltstamped cloth. – Ellis (1794–1872) visited Madagscar several
times. He was finally allowed to preach Christianity there and
stayed from 1861 to 1865. In 1868 a Christian Queen ascended
the throne of Madagascar. Binding scuffed and shaken, some foxing
to the text.
