STATEMENTMy work departs from the interest in the body’s physical awareness of thespace that surround us as it literally unfolds and enfolds the viewer in itsembrace. Interested in surface and material presence applied in innovativeand economic ways, I work with the premise of assembling distilled andconcentrated forms to engage the viewer in an installation setting.A primary preoccupation in my practice is the role of perception as asubjective experience, set up through material explorations of both two andthree-dimensional juxtapositions with the intention of creating temporarysubtly destabilizing poetic environments. The purpose is to accentuate thehuman body’s sight based experience through light, texture and colorcontrasts, confronting space and architecture with gesture.Fascinated by the eye’s physiology and light, which is a primordial elementconfined in the world revealing the surface and dimensions of space, I workwith the dualities of light/shadow and color contrasts/transparenciestogether with translucent materials like plexiglas, theater and photographicfilters, electric lamps, glass, pigments, paper and fabric. Instead ofrepresenting texture, space and light, my work presents these elementsdirectly for the body to experience. In minimalism, phenomenology is applied to conceptualize the viewer asutterly embodied and immersed in a field of potential activity. It showsthat the specific qualities and possibilities of space are produced in partby that viewer, which is both subject and object of the environment. My workthen seeks to emphasize the context and qualities of the space andenvironment were the artwork is placed. Not necessarily adding another layerbut rather taking something away, deconstructing the relationship of how thebody of the viewer builds up a space, thus revealing once again itsappearance.
