Collection of best practices to learn from them for future projects
In parallel, ÖGUT was commissioned to perform an accompanying investigation of the mediation
procedure on a high-speed railway line in Gastein Valley in order to obtain a “fleshand-blood”
empirical examination of a procedure and to prepare a clear documentation on it.
This procedure, which was successfully concluded in June 2001, will be presented for the
first time at the 1 st European Symposium on Environmental Mediation in Europe.
Reaching beyond national boundaries: Initiative for European networking
With the aim of initiating an exchange of information and experiences and obtaining an overview
of the level of experiences available in other European countries, the environmental
ministry commissioned Mediator/ISTM to carry out a comparative study. The study “Environmental
Mediation in Europe - Status and Experiences. Procedures for Resolving Environmental
Conflicts” (2000) yielded interesting results on the status and diversity of European
developments. This study constituted the impetus for organising the 1 st European Symposium
on Environmental Mediation in Europe in Vienna on 22 and 23 November 2001 that
also is to discuss possibilities for networking in Europe.
