India – a continent with many faces
What does the future hold after the financial and economic crisis?
An attempt to describe possible development in the future.
by professor Franz Maier, Nycomed (deutsche Version siehe Seite 4)
The traditional emerging nations – India, China and
Brazil – have shown ever since the economic and financial
crisis that they have survived this recession
surprisingly well. A large part of these countries has
"weathered" the turmoil in the financial markets better
than many western industrial countries (one need only
think of Greece within the EU, and possibly also Portugal
and Spain) and are now emerging as the victors
of the crisis.
This is evident above all from the growth rates of these
countries: 8.9% in China, followed by an anticipated
8.8% for India this year. A fundamental shift in the economical
and financial balance of power towards the emerging
markets has been evident for some years. The percentage
of global economic output generated by these countries has
been increasing significantly over recent years and has been
more than 50% since 2009.
Hard times have fallen on the pharmaceutical industry in
the industrial nations and never before have so many drugs
lost their patent protection as is the case today. This is
down to the imitators and generic drugs companies, many
of whom are located in India, who are generating massive
pressure. In 2010 pharmaceuticals with a market value of
25 billion dollars lost their patent protection. Statistics assume
that there are over 3,000 pharmaceutical companies in
India, 300 of which are regarded as being "large".
Sooner or later you will be asking yourself what has Waldner
got to do with India? It was around five years ago that
the story started with WALDNER Laboreinrichtungen, India
and ALTANA in Konstanz. Since the mid-1990s ALTANA has
been operating in India and was planning a 50:50 joint venture
in India with one of the largest Indian pharmaceutical
companies, Achmedabad-based Zydus Cadilla. The business
hub of Mumbai was a possible location in India, as this city
and its surroundings accounts for 40% of economic output in
India and is the key business heart of the country.
We created a wonderful "campus architectural style" in a
formal Botanical Garden, whilst paying the greatest attention
to and retaining the existing environmental structures
as well as striving for and achieving sustainability. The
furniture systems, including a number of laboratory flue
cupboards, were supplied by Waldner, which emerged as the
winner of the international competition. The mc6 range was
the premium quality defining product that, with its many
well-known innovations, is still satisfying, enthusing and
inspiring laboratory staff today.
