Manufacture of aluminium pigments 

In the production of aluminium pigments, atomized aluminium or 

aluminium foil granulate is milled with white spirit and additives 

in the so called Hall process. In this first milling phase the choice 

of the additives creates on "leafing" or "non-leafing" properties. 

The additives define the surface tension and thus the flotation 

behaviour in the paint. The milling conditions and the equipping 

of the ball mills allow products with various fineness and platelet 

thickness to be produced. After the milling, the resulting milling 

sludge is sieved and freed from excess white spirit by filter presses, 

as well as being homogenized and the exact proportion of 

metal adjusted. Standard aluminium pastes have a metal content 

of 66%. Depending on the demands on the product, the fine 

metal pigments are now dried, polished, dedusted, stabilized and/ 

or pastified. Blitz ® Aluminium pigments are lamellar and display a 

thickness-to-length ratio of 1:50 up to 1:100. 

Behaviour in the coating 

The aluminium platelets orientate themselves in the 

coating parallel to the substrate and thus form the desired barrier 

effect which is then also responsible for the high covering power 

and the good corrosion protection of the aluminium pigments. 


Erzeugung von Aluminiumpigmenten 

Bei der Produktion von Aluminiumpigmenten wird Aluminiumgrieß 

oder Aluminiumfoliengranulat mit Testbenzin und 

Zusatz stoffen im Hall-Verfahren gemahlen. Die Auswahl der 

Zusatz stoffe entscheidet schon in der ersten Mahlphase über 

„leafing“ oder „non-leafing“-Eigenschaften. Die Zusatzstoffe 

definieren die Oberflächenspannung und damit das 

Schwimmverhalten im Lack. Die Mahlbedingungen und 

die Ausrüstung der Kugelmühlen lassen Produkte mit verschiedener 

Feinheit und Plättchenstärke entstehen. Nach 

der Mahlung wird der entstandene Mahlschlamm gesiebt 

und mittels Filterpressen von überschüssigem Test benzin 

befreit, sowie homogenisiert und der exakte Metallanteil 

eingestellt. Standard Aluminiumpasten verfügen über 

einen Metallanteil von 66%. Je nach Anforderung an das 

Produkt werden die feinen Metall pigmente noch getrocknet, 

poliert, entstaubt, stabilisiert und/oder angepastet. 

Blitz ® Aluminiumpigmente sind lamellar und weisen ein 

Dicken-Längenverhältnis von 1:50 bis 1:100 auf. 

Verhalten in der Beschichtung 

Die Aluminiumplättchen orientieren sich in der 

Be schichtung parallel zum Substrat und bilden dadurch 

einen gewünschten Barriere-Effekt, der dann auch für 

die hohe Deckkraft und den guten Korrosionsschutz der 

Aluminiumpigmente verantwortlich ist.

Particle shape and particle size have a huge influence on 

the properties of the pigments in various applications. 

So-called Cornflake pigments contain a lot of fine particles, 

have a broad particle size distribution and an irregular pigment 

shape. This results in giving the application excellent 

hiding power. However, the coating appears somehow 

greyish and shows poorer image clarity. Mixed with colored 

pigments the color shades appear unclean. 

Silver dollar pigments on the other hand are characterized 

by a very regular particle shape and a narrow particle size 

distribution. Because they contain few tiny particles no 

graying occurs and when mixed with transparent colored 

pigments very pure colors are possible. The smooth surface 

results in a better-looking reflection and thus in higher 

brightness and brilliance.

Die Kornform und Teilchengrößenverteilung hat einen großen Einfluss 

auf die Eigenschaften der Pigmente in der Anwendung. 

Sogenannte Cornflakepigmente enthalten einerseits viel Feinanteil 

und weisen eine breite Partikelgrößenverteilung sowie eine unregelmäßige 

Pigmentform auf. Dadurch ergibt sich in der Anwendung eine 

exzellente Deckkraft, allerdings sind damit hergestellte Beschichtungen 

eher etwas grau und haben eine schlechtere Abbildungsschärfe. In der 

Mischung mit Farbpigmenten wirken die Farbtöne etwas unrein. 

Silberdollarpigmente auf der anderen Seite zeichnen sich durch eine 

sehr reguläre Partikelform sowie eine sehr enge Partikelgrößenverteilung 

aus. Weil sie dementsprechend wenig feinste Partikel enthalten, tritt 

keine Vergrauung auf, und es können in Abmischung mit transparenten 

Buntpigmenten sehr reine Farbtöne erzielt werden. Die glatte 

Oberfläche bewirkt eine verbesserte gerichtete Reflexion und damit 

eine bessere Helligkeit und Brillanz.

Leafing-Effect 

Due to the high surface tension of the pigments, this pigment 

moves towards the boundary surface - that is to say, 

the surface - of the paint film. The result is an enriching of the 

alu minium pigments at the paint surface which protects the 

paint film against weathering, radiation, abrasion and corrosion. 

Leafing pigments form a strongly reflective metal layer at the 

paint surface which can go so far as to a metallic mirror effect. 

It should also be noted that the leafing effect can be reduced 

or even completely destroyed by unfavour able formulations 

(too low surface tension of the solvent, water, tenside etc.).

Durch die hohe Oberflächenspannung der Pigmente tendiert dieses Pigment zur 

Grenzfläche – also Oberfläche – des Lackfilms. Es erfolgt eine Anreicherung der 

Aluminiumpigmente an der Lackoberfläche, die den Lackfilm vor Verwitterung, 

Strahlen, Abrieb und Korrosion schützt. 

Leafing-Pigmente bilden eine stark reflektierende Metallschicht an 

der Lackoberfläche, die bis zu einem metallischen Spiegeleffekt 

reichen kann. 

Zu bemerken ist noch, dass der Leafing-Effekt durch ungünstige 

Formulierungen reduziert oder sogar komplett zerstört werden kann (zu niedrige 

Oberflächenspannung der Lösungsmittel, Wasser, Tenside u.a.).

Non-leafing aluminium pigments distribute themselves evenly 

in the paint film and reflect the incident light due to the paint 

film. Due to this, they are very suistable for tinted paints like, for 

example, bright metallic bicycle paints or tinted hammer-effect

or intermediate coat paints as no adhesion problems are to be 

expected here.

Non-Leafing Aluminiumpigmente verteilen sich gleichmäßig im Lackfilm 

und reflektieren das einfallende Licht durch den Lackfilm. Dadurch eignen 

sie sich auch sehr gut für getönte Lacke, wie z.B. bunte metallische 

Fahrradlacke oder getönte Hammerschlaglacke. Auch für Primer- oder 

Zwischenschichtlacke werden Non-Leafing-Pigmente bevorzugt eingesetzt, 

da hier keine Haftungsprobleme zu erwarten sind.

In contrast to normal aluminium powder, Depuval is 

non-dusting. This effect is achieved by the addition of 

max. 0.2% of an inert material in a special process. The 

basic properties of the aluminium powder are not altered 

by this. Depuval is safer to incorporate than conventional 

aluminium powders, similar to aluminium paste, with 

the difference that it is solvent-free and can therefore 

be universally used. Due to the dust-free processing, no 

impurities arise - so there is increased safety. 

Depuval ist im Gegensatz zu normalem Aluminiumpulver nicht staubend. 

Dieser Effekt wird durch einen Zusatz von max. 0.2% eines inerten 

Stoffes in einem speziellen Verfahren erreicht. Die Grundeigenschaften 

des Aluminium pulvers werden dadurch nicht verändert. Depuval ist 

sicherer einzuarbeiten als herkömmliche Aluminiumpulver, ähnlich wie 

Aluminiumpaste, mit dem Unterschied, dass es lösungsmittelfrei und 

daher universell einsetzbar ist. Durch die staubfreie Verarbeitung entstehen 

keine Verunreinigungen – somit ist erhöhte Sicherheit gegeben.

Without any protective layer, aluminium would immediately 

react with water and so develop gas (hydrogen).

As this reaction in a coating causes a big problem already during 

the storage, it must be prevented by stabilization.

Mainly phosphororgano- (Blitz® Aquaral) and the silica coatings 

(Blitz® xxSI and Maxal EC-Pigments) have prevailed for reasons 

of quality, price and ecology. 

Blitz® Aquaral stands out due to its good opacity and its 

excellent pigment orientation at very good storage stabilities 

up to a pH 10. The use of Blitz® Stabil SI and Blitz® Maxal SI is 

recommended for achieving a sparkle effect and a very high 

chemical stability. 

Blitz® Stabil SI pigments are based on the metallic pigment 

form. Blitz® Maxal SI pigments in turn are silver dollar pigments 

with a regular particle form. Up to pH 13 and middle aggressive 

chemicals, Blitz® Stabil SI and Blitz® Maxal SI pigments would 

mean the best choice. If extreme stability is needed, we recommend 

our new Blitz® Maxal EC pigments. However, all our silica 

coated pigments show very good weather resistance and extraordinary 

intercoat adhesion.

Dabei haben sich aus qualitativen, preislichen und umweltrelevanten Gründen 

hauptsächlich die Phosphororgano,- (=> Blitz® Aquaral) und die Silikatbeschichtung 

(Blitz® SI und EC-Pigmente) durchgesetzt. 

Blitz® Aquaral zeichnet sich durch eine gute Deckkraft mit einer ausgezeichneten 

Pigmentorientierung bei sehr guten Lagerstabilitäten bis pH-Wert 10 aus. Blitz® 

Stabil SI und Maxal SI werden eingesetzt, wenn man den Sparkle-Effekt und 

eine hohe Chemikalien-Stabilität benötigt. Blitz® Stabil SI-Pigmente basieren auf 

Metallic-Partikelform, während Blitz® Maxal SI-Pigmente Silberdollarpigmente mit 

einer reguläreren Partikelform sind. Bis zu einem pH-Wert von 13 und mittelaggressiven 

Chemikalien sind Blitz® Stabil SI und Blitz® Maxal SI-Pigmente optimal. 

Für extreme Beständigkeiten sollte aber auf die Produktgruppe Blitz® Maxal EC 

zurückgegriffen werden. Alle silikatbeschichteten Pigmente zeigen zudem eine sehr 

gute Witterungs beständigkeit und hervorragende Zwischenschicht haftung.

their form and chemistry and thus help towards innovative 

problem solutions. The narrow paint pores are 

completely closed by conversion of the chemically 

base zinc into the higher-volume zinc oxide – 

one speaks of a compression effect. Due to the 

lamellar form of the pigment, the barrier, the 

compression and the cathodic effects are very

Blitz ® Zink Flakes besitzen durch ihre Form und ihren 

Chemismus enorme Vorteile und verhelfen so zu inno vativen 

Problemlösungen. Durch die Umwandlung des chemisch 

unedlen Zinks in das höhervoluminöse Zinkoxid werden 

die engen Lackporen komplett geschlossen – man spricht 

vom Verzementierungs effekt. Durch die lamellare Form 

des Pigments ist der Barriere,- der Verzementierungs- 

und der katho dische Effekt auch bei relativ geringen 

Zusatzmengen sehr gut ausgeprägt. Mit Blitz ® 

Zink Flakes sind auch bei niedrigen Schichtstärken 

sehr gute Korrosionsschutz beständig keiten erzielbar.

Blitz ® Goldbronze- and Copper Pigments

Blitz ® Goldbronze pigments consist of brass (copper-zinc alloy). 

Yellowish to reddish tones are achieved depending on the 

alloy. Goldbronze pigments are available in the standard colors 

Rich Gold, Rich Pale Gold, Pale Gold and Copper. If required, 

however, the special color tones Lemon, Sovereign Gold, 

Orange and Fire Red are also obtainable. These pigments 

produce a particularly noble gold color tone which cannot 

otherwise be achieved in this fieriness. 

To be noted, however, is the relatively high reactivity 

of the copper which can then shift the color tone into 

greenish brown. These problems can be prevented with welldirected 

selection of the resin and the application.

Blitz ® Goldbronzepigmente bestehen aus Messing ( Kupfer-Zink- 

Legierung). Je nach Legierung erzielt man gelbliche bis rötliche 

Farbtöne. Goldbronzepigmente sind standardmäßig in 

den Farben Reichgold, Reichbleichgold, Bleichgold und Kupfer 

erhältlich. Bei Bedarf sind aber auch die Sonderfarbtöne Citron, 

Dukatengold, Orange und Feuerrot beziehbar. 

Diese Pigmente erzeugen einen besonders edlen Goldfarbton, 

der in dieser Feurigkeit sonst nicht erreichbar ist. 

Zu beachten ist aber die relativ hohe Reaktionsbereitschaft 

des Kupfers, welches den Farbton ins grünlich Braune verschieben 

kann. Mit einer gezielten Auswahl des Harzes und der
