Thomas R. Müller, Chefredakteur PLAYGROUND@LANDSCAPE Citizen Commitment of major importance Many communities are in “intensive care” and saving for financial collapse. City treasurers have less and less room for manoeuvre. More and more playgrounds are falling victim to this everdecreasing scope of action. In some, there have been acts of blind vandalism, and thus damage to play equipment. Irresponsible dog owners have been allowing their dogs to use sand areas as toilets. Shards, cigarette butts and rubbish have thoughtlessly ended up in children’s play areas. The consequence: Playgrounds are closed or no longer have any play value. In order to remedy this abuse, a playground patron can be brought in to carry out regular inspection visits. Citizen commitment will become even more important in the future. Playgrounds looked after by parents’ associations are particularly popular, because they are clean and safe. As a result, an entire village in Haigerloch-Gruol became active in “cleaning up” Gruol playground – on a voluntary basis: There are ten volunteers, and they are young and unstoppable. The Gruol project team "By the Youth for the future”, led by Alexander Brendle, had been determined to “clean up” the playground next to the Gruol Sports Club. All completely voluntary. Many helpers were needed to achieve this and, in fact, there were many willing and wanting to help out. The teenagers in the Gruol youth centre, most of the clubs/associations, companies, an architect, the town of Haigerloch, the Town Council and many others from the village had decided: “We are helping, because today’s children are tomorrow’s future”. Without this kind of voluntary commitment and dedication, many play areas will be closed off in the future. And local authorities should continue to appreciate this honorary service right up to Federal parliament and not just once a year in specially-formulated speeches – only then will voluntary commitment become important again in this country. Local authorities are required to effectively combine the Main Office and the Honorary Office. It is imperative that we avoid the impression of the volunteer being a “cheap-skate” option or a stopgap. It is far more important to publically portray the voluntary committed persons as indispensible guarantors for attractive, varied facilities in the local community. Thomas R.
