Monica Bonvicini (geb. 1965 in
Venedig, lebt und arbeitet in Berlin
und Wien) hat in rund 25 Jahren ein
gewaltiges Konvolut an zeichnungen
geschaffen. Es sind skizzen, Entwürfe,
Konzepte für ihre weltweit
bekannten skulpturalen, installativen
oder medialen Werke sowie viele freie
arbeiten, die einen völlig eigenen Part
ihres Œuvres ausmachen. Dieses zeigt
eine große Bandbreite an kraftvollen,
aggressiven ausdrucksformen und
intimen psychologischen inhalten wie
Verletzbarkeit, nacktheit, isolation
und unterdrückter Gewalt. Das Buch
zeigt eine große auswahl aus mehr
als 1000 Blättern. Die Größe variiert
von kleinen Din-a6-zetteln bis zu
großformatigen Bögen. Die Materialien
sind Bleistift, tusche, Deckweiß
und häufig schablonen, außerdem
Fotografien und gefundene Drucksachen,
die in die zeichnungen in der
für Bonvicini typischen, expressiven
Poetik einmontiert sind.
Mit texten von Harald Falckenberg,
susanne titz und einem Gespräch zwischen
Monica Bonvicini und Lawrence
Weiner. Vorwort von Dirk Luckow und
susanne titz.
Over roughly twenty-five years, Monica
Bonvicini (b. Venice, 1965; lives and
works in Berlin and Vienna) has created
a vast collection of drawings, including
sketches, designs, and concepts
for the sculptures, installations, and
works of media art that have earned
her worldwide renown, as well as many
standalone works that constitute a
significant part of her Œuvre in their
own right. these drawings evince
a wide range of forms of forceful
and aggressive expression as well as
intimate psychological themes such as
vulnerability, nakedness, isolation, and
repressed violence. the book presents a
large selection from more than a thousand
sheets, ranging from small pieces
of paper measuring around four by
six inches to large formats. the artist
uses pencils, inks, and opaque white,
and often employs stencils, as well as
photographs and found printed matter
she inserts into her drawings, another
instance of Bonvicini’s characteristically
expressive poetics.
With essays by Harald Falckenberg,
susanne titz as well as a conversation
between Monica Bonvicini and
Lawrence Weiner. With a preface by
Dirk Luckow and susanne titz.
Das Wesen des Menschen
The Nature of Man
Michael Dannenmann (geb. 1959 in
stuttgart, lebt und arbeitet in Düsseldorf)
gehört international zu den wichtigsten
Vertretern der Portraitfotografie. ihm
gelingt es, im Bruchteil einer sekunde
das Wesentliche eines Menschen einzufangen
– das ist große Kunst.
Besonders häufig fotografiert er Künstler
in ihren ateliers. Das Wichtigste ist
immer das Gesicht, und meist blickt
der Portraitierte direkt in die Kamera.
Günther Uecker scheint gerade erst eingezogen
zu sein, Markus Lüpertz hat noch
die Malerschürze um – das Geheim nis
besteht aus einer Mischung aus Planung
und spontaneität. sie macht die eigentliche
Faszination der Bilder von Michael
Dannenmann aus. Mit Beiträgen von
Michael Dannenmann (b. stuttgart
1959; lives and works in Düsseldorf)
is one of the most important representatives
of portrait photography on the
international stage. in fractions of a
second, he manages to capture what is
essential about a human being—that is
a high art. He frequently photographs
artists in their studios. the face is always
what matters most, and the great
majority of his sitters look straight into
the camera. Günther Uecker seems to
have just moved in; Markus Lüpertz is
still wearing his painter’s apron—the
secret is a blend of planning and spontaneity,
and it is this fusion that ultimately
makes Michael Dannenmann’s pictures
so fascinating. With essays by Ulrich
lonelyFingers
„Einen Gegenstand zum Schweigen zu bringen,
bedeutet eine Person zum Schweigen zu bringen.“
“Silencing an object means silencing a person.”
lonely fingers, 2011
in den Werken von Diango Hernández
(geb. 1970 in sancti spíritus auf Kuba,
lebt und arbeitet in Düsseldorf) geht
es um seine eigenen Erlebnisse und
persönlichen Beziehungen, die er in
weitergehende gesellschaftliche und
politische Reflexionen einbindet. Ein
zentrales thema der künstlerischen
suche von Hernández ist das nachdenken
über die traumatischen und
oft unvollständigen Übergangsphasen
der kubanischen Gesellschaft: das
schmerzhafte Erbe der sklaverei, die
Widersprüche der Entkolonialisierung
und der Castro-Revolution, die suche
nach einer neuen „möglichen zukunft“
nach dem zusammenbruch der sowjetunion.
Hernández interessiert sich
seit Mitte der neunziger Jahre, als er
noch in Havanna lebte, für Materialien
des täglichen Lebens. Folgerichtig
ist die installation Lonely Fingers
(2011) nicht nur eine weiße Wand mit
Gitarrensaiten, sondern vielmehr ein
Resonanzkörper, ja Musikinstrument.
Diango Hernández’ arbeiten wurden
u.a. auf den Biennalen von Venedig
(2005), são Paulo und sydney (2006)
sowie Liverpool (2010) gezeigt und von
bedeutenden sammlungen wie der des
MoMa in new York angekauft.
the works of Diango Hernández (b.
sancti spíritus, Cuba, 1970; lives and
works in Düsseldorf) examine his own
experiences and personal relationships,
which the artist embeds in larger social
and political reflections. a central
theme of Hernández’s artistic quest are
his reflections on the traumatic
and often unaccomplished transitions
of Cuban society: the painful legacy of
slavery, the contradictions of decolonization
and the Castro revolution, the
search for a new “possible future” after
the collapse of the soviet Union. since
the mid-1990s, when he was still living
in Havana, Hernández has been interested
in materials from everyday life.
the installation Lonely Fingers (2011)
is accordingly not just a white wall
covered with guitar strings, but rather
a sounding box, and indeed a musical
instrument. Diango Hernández’s art
has been presented at the Venice
(2005), são Paulo, sydney (2006),
and Liverpool (2010) biennials, among
other exhibitions, and is included in the
collections of major institutions such as
the MoMa, new York.
Produktive Zerstörung
Productive Destruction
Jan albers (geb. 1971 in Wuppertal,
aufgewachsen in namibia, lebt und
arbeitet in Düsseldorf) gehört zu einer
jungen, konzeptuell arbeitenden Künstlergeneration,
die sich in ihren arbeiten
immer wieder auf die sprache der
Moderne bezieht, diese hinterfragt und
in ihrer ausdrucksdimension auslotet.
seine Objekte sind weder skulpturen
noch Reliefs, seine Bilder weder reine
zeichnung, noch Malerei, noch Collage.
albers eröffnet der Kunst neues
terrain, er demonstriert, dass es auch
nach der Moderne und der Postmoderne
noch immer möglich und notwendig
ist, Kunstwerke zu schaffen, die
neu und unverwechselbar sind. seine
Kunst changiert nicht zufällig zwischen
nelson Mandela und Ellsworth Kelly, es
ist gerade diese ungewöhnliche spannung
zwischen politischem Engagement
und spiritueller sehnsucht, die das Werk
von albers faszinierend und überzeugend
macht. Er zeigt mit seinen arbeiten,
dass sich künstlerischer Erfindungsreichtum
und gesellschaftliche Relevanz
nicht ausschließen, sondern einander
geradezu bedingen können.
Mit texten von Kay Heymer, Brigitte
Jan albers (b. Wuppertal 1971, grew up
in namibia; lives and works in Düsseldorf)
represents a young generation of
conceptual artists whose work returns
time and again to the language of modernism,
scrutinizing it and exploring
its expressive dimensions. His objects
are neither sculptures nor reliefs; his
pictures neither pure drawing nor
painting nor collage. albers conquers
new territory for art, demonstrating that
it is, even after modernism and postmodernism,
still possible and necessary
to create works of art that are new and
unlike anything we have seen before.
it is not by accident that his art moves
nimbly between nelson Mandela and
Ellsworth Kelly: this unusual tension
between political engagement and spiritual
yearning is what renders albers’s
oeuvre so fascinating and persuasive.
His works show that artistic invention
and social relevance, far from being
mutually exclusive, may in fact sustain
each other.
Dialoge
Einfachheit und innovative Raffinesse beim heutigen Bauen
Simplicity and Innovative Ingenuity in Today’s Building
Wohnhaus/apartment building, Berlin
v Baugruppe/Unit auguststraße, Berlin
Was ist Raum? Wie kann er sinnlich
erfahren, wie in seiner städtischen und
kulturellen Dimension verstanden und
neu gedacht werden? Diese Fragen
sind ausgangspunkt für die arbeit
des architekturbüros Grüntuch Ernst.
Der Komplexität der anforderungen
heutigen Bauens begegnen sie mit der
Rückbesinnung auf traditionelle Einfachheit
und gleichzeitig mit technischinnovativer
Raffinesse – und kehren
dabei doch immer zur zentralen Frage
nach dem Raum zurück. neben einem
Rückblick auf die Vielfalt der preisgekrönten
Projekte der letzten zehn Jahre
zeigt die neue Monografie auch jüngere
arbeiten und Wettbewerbserfolge wie
die Deutsche schule in Madrid oder
den Umbau der ehemaligen jüdischen
Mädchenschule in Berlin zu einem
Ort für Kunst und Kultur. Klassische
Projektbeschreibungen werden ersetzt
durch persönliche zwiegespräche, in denen
das architektenduo Grüntuch Ernst
über die Motivationen und Entwicklungsprozesse
ihrer Projekte reflektiert.
Einen besonderen zugang zur architektur
des Büros erlauben beispielsweise
die Gemälde des dänischen Malers
asmund Havsteen-Mikkelsen, der sich
mit der architektur von Grüntuch Ernst
in einer Reihe von Bildern künstlerisch
auseinander gesetzt hat.
What is space? How can we experience
it with the senses, how understand and
rethink its urban and cultural dimensions?
these questions stand at the
beginning of the work of Grüntuch
Ernst architects. they meet the complex
requirements of building today
by going back to traditional simplicity
while producing innovative and ingenious
technical solutions—and yet they
return, time and again, to the central
question of space.
the new monograph offers a review
of Grüntuch Ernst’s award-winning
projects from the past ten years as well
as more recent works and successful
competition entries such as the German
school in Madrid and the conversion
of the former Jewish Girls’ school in
Berlin into a venue for art and culture.
instead of traditional project descriptions,
the book contains personal conversations
in which the two architects
reflect on the motivations that drive
their projects and trace their evolution.
For instance the paintings of the Danish
artist asmund Havsteen-Mikkelsen
provide a unique view of the studio’s
work; he has engaged Grüntuch Ernst’s
architecture with the means of his own
art in a series of pictures.
lebt und arbeitet in Berlin) gehört zu
figürliche Positionen in die Gegenwartskunst
bringen. Der Künstler studierte
zeitgleich mit Eberhard Havekost, Frank
Hochschule der Bildenden Künste in
Dresden.
painters who have attracted a great deal
of attention by bringing new figurative
positions back to contemporary art. the
artist trained at the Dresden academy
of Fine arts, where Eberhard Havekost,
Frank nitsche, and thomas scheibitz
were his fellow students. Knobloch’s
paintings show the mundane world;
ostensibly trivial motifs he has observed
in his immediate environment. His gaze
is distant, impartial, though not without
sympathy. His works seem strangely
aloof, abstracted from the temporal
world. By withdrawing the painted
action from any sequence of events,
isolating it from narrative contexts, he
renders the beholder aware of the object
he depicts, urging him to complete it by
supplying his own recollections.
the book is published in conjunction
with the exhibition of Knobloch’s work
at the Kunstmuseum Dieselkraftwerk,
Cottbus (2012), and the städtische
Galerie Dresden (2013). it offers a
survey of the different periods of
Knobloch’s oeuvre and presents new
motifs from his most recent grand tour
of america. With essays by Max Henry,
Die Bilder von Eberhard Havekost
(geb. 1967 in Dresden, lebt und arbeitet
Hier findet Havekost Motive
the pictures of Eberhard Havekost
(b. Dresden 1967; lives and works in
analysis of the outward appearance of
our world. the city constitutes a central
environment of his life and experience,
supplying Havekost with motifs and
situations that phenotypically reflect the
urban lifeworlds of a rising consumer
society. He integrates these complex
structures into his works by using
details, for example, of façades, streets,
cars, shop windows, and passersby. Filtered
and transformed by the painter’s
art, these views of everyday life
condense into a stocktaking of contemporary
manifestations of architecture,
mobility, communication, consumption,
and leisure. as part of the culture
Die Frühen arbeiten
nach der gefeierten Wiederentdeckung
auf der documenta 12 richtet sich das
weltweite interesse an das Werk von
Charlotte Posenenske (1930–1985)
vornehmlich auf die technoiden
Objekte, mit denen die minimalistische
Konzeptkünstlerin bekannt wurde,
und nur gelegentlich auch auf ihre
Malerei – als Vorarbeit. Diese im
Besonderen zu behandeln, ist nun
an der zeit. nach den aussagen der
Künstlerin sind ihre Bilder an Cézanne,
Mondrian und El Lissitzky orientiert.
Den kontinuierlichen Übergang zu
Objekten, den sie gleichwohl als Bruch
empfand, bilden ihre Reliefs. Welche
künstlerischen Positionen die frühen
Raster, die schwebenden strukturen
und die impulsiven Farbschmisse ihrer
spachtelarbeiten beeinflusst haben
mögen und welche Ähnlichkeiten es
mit arbeiten von zeitgenossen gibt,
diskutiert zum ersten Mal Philipp
Kaiser in seinem Essay.
the interest in the work of Charlotte
Posenenske (1930–1985) aroused by the
celebrated rediscovery of her art at documenta
12 focuses primarily on the technoid
objects that earned this minimalist
conceptual artist her renown, with only
occasional glances at her paintings—
seen as preparatory studies. the time
has come for a dedicated examination
of these works. according to the artist’s
own statements, her pictures drew inspiration
from Cézanne, Mondrian, and
El Lissitzky. Her reliefs constitute the
seamless transition—though she saw it
as a clear break—to the objects. Which
artistic positions may have influenced
the early grids, the floating structures,
and the impulsiveness with which she
flung paint on the canvas in the works
she created using a palette knife? in
which ways does her art bear similarities
to the works of her contemporaries?
these are some of the questions Philipp
Kaiser’s essay begins to address.
den zeitgeist von 1967 hatten beide
Wiederholung als Gesetzmäßigkeit
natürlicher, industrieller und sozialer
ihrer Kunst wiedergefunden. sie arbeiteten
in serien, entsubjektivierten die
arbeit und liquidierten so den traditionellen
status des Künstlers, der Unikate
als Basis des kommerziellen Kunstbetriebs
schafft. „Less is more“ galt für
beide Künstler, deren arbeiten als radikale,
[the same thing another way / always
Charlotte Posenenske (1930–1985) and
Peter Roehr’s (1944–1968) joint exhibition
at the Kunsthaus, Wiesbaden. Both
artists, who contributed to documenta,
did not achieve fame until after their
early deaths. against the zeitgeist of
1967, both recognized that repetition
constituted the law of natural, industrial,
and social processes, and found
in it the guiding principle of their art.
they worked in series, stripping their
productions of subjective qualities and
liquidating the traditional status of the
artist as the creator of unique objects
on which the commercial art world is
based. “Less is more:” that was true
for both artists, whose works are now
widely acknowledged as representative
of a radical late-modern critique of
commercialism. their art, which was
rarely shown during their lifetime, is
now included in the collections of leading
museums in Germany and abroad.
Wolken, 2010, installationsansicht/installation view, Kunstsammlung nordrhein-Westfalen, Düsseldorf
integrale Bestandteile der arbeiten
von Michael sailstorfer (geb. 1979 in
Velden/Vils, lebt und arbeitet in Berlin)
sind alltägliche Objekte, aber auch
Gerüche, Lärm, Bewegung und zeit,
die sich zu einem poetischen Gesamtbild
verbinden. Die Werke Forst und
Schwarzwald sind ausgangspunkt und
stehen exemplarisch für die schnittstellen
und Überlagerungen von naturraum
und künstlichem Raum. Welche Funktion
diese Überlegungen des Künstlers
in seinen arbeiten einnehmen, ist
thema eines längeren Gesprächs,
das Guido Fassbender und isabelle
Lindermann mit ihm geführt haben.
Bebildert mit zahlreichen arbeiten von
sailstorfer und anderen Künstlern, die
im Gespräch erwähnt werden, bildet
das Buch einen lockeren spaziergang
durch sein vielschichtiges Gesamtwerk.
Die Publikation beginnt und endet mit
von sailstorfer zusammengestellten
Passagen aus Expeditionsberichten des
norwegischen Rechtsanwalts, Verlegers
und abenteurers Erling Kagge. Diese
schildern Momente extremer naturerfahrung
und stehen so in Beziehung
zu arbeiten wie den Unterwasserskulpturen
oder Schwarzwald, die
Michael sailstorfer an extremen Orten
der natur aussetzt und dort sich selbst
überlässt.
Everyday objects are integral
components of the works of Michael
sailstorfer (b. Velden/Vils 1979; lives
and works in Berlin), but so are smells,
noise, movement, and time, which
blend to form a poetic overall picture.
the works Forst and Schwarzwald
form the point of departure for
this book. they are exemplary
representations of the interfaces and
overlaps between natural and artificial
spaces. an extensive conversation
between sailstorfer, Guido Fassbender,
and isabelle Lindermann explores the
role reflections on such issues play
in the artist’s work. illustrated with
numerous works by sailstorfer and
other artists whose names come up in
the conversation, the book presents an
informal stroll through his multifaceted
oeuvre. it opens and closes with
passages the artist has selected from
the norwegian attorney, publisher, and
adventurer Erling Kagge’s accounts of
his expeditions, narratives of moments
when their author experienced the
extremes of nature—thus their relation
to works such as the underwater
sculptures or Schwarzwald, which
Michael sailstorfer abandons in
extreme locations, exposing them to
the forces of nature.
akzeptierten Codes an, in denen sich
unser Verhalten, unsere sprache und
unser Bild von anderen Epochen und
Kulturen bewegen. in zeichnungen,
Objekten, installationen, Performances
Grenzen offen und holt hervor, was
durch koloniale Denkweisen in Vergessenheit
geraten ist. als wichtige
instrumente dienen ihr dabei sprache
so lange als Kommunikationsmittel,
wie wir uns in einem allen verfügbaren
Rahmen bewegen. aber wer entscheidet
darüber? Und was existiert jenseits
davon? Der Körper als ausgangspunkt
der codierten Blickweisen, richtigen
Mariechen Danz (b. Dublin 1980; lives
hierarchies. she takes measures against
the accepted codes that constrain our
actions, our language, and our view of
other eras and cultures. in drawings,
objects, installations, performances,
and music, she reveals unquestioningly
accepted boundaries and unearths what
colonial habits of thought have obliterated.
Her most important instruments
in this endeavor are language and the
body. Language functions as a means
of communication as long as we remain
within the universally established
frameworks. But who determines them?
and what exists beyond these confines?
the body, as the point of departure for
liefert mit seiner arbeit einen wichtigen
Beitrag zur Entwicklung der
Kunst im öffentlichen Raum, deren
klassische Verortung er durch den
Entzug wesent licher Determinanten
zugunsten einer utopischen Dimension
aufhebt. so erzählt auch 54° 4 min.
von einer Reise zu sehnsuchtsbesetzten
Orten unserer zeit. Mit der konkreten
wie gleichzeitig bewusst unvollständigen
Ortsbestimmungen eröffnet
Goldberg das spektrum seiner künstlerischen
Reflexionen: vom historischen
schlaraffenland bis zum virtuellen
Palmenstrand als Bildschirmschoner,
von der Wegbeschreibung entlang des
54. Breitengrades über ferne inseln bis
hin zur strahlenden Wolke, der man
in entlegene Paradiese folgen könnte.
Erstmalig wird der Multimedia-Künstler
in einer großen Retrospektive vorgestellt,
die in drei ausstellungshäusern
in Deutschland und Polen gezeigt
wird. Das Buch liefert einen medienübergreifenden
the work of thorsten Goldberg (b.
to the evolution of art in the
public sphere, whose classical localization
he suspends by removing crucial
determinants in favor of a utopian dimension.
54° 4 min., too, tells the story
of a journey to places that embody the
yearnings of our time. By proffering
definitions of places that are as specific
as they are deliberately incomplete,
Goldberg unfolds the spectrum of
his artistic reflection before us: from
the historic Land of Cockaigne to the
virtual palm-lined beach adorning a
screensaver, from directions guiding us
along the 54 th parallel to far-off islands
and the radiant cloud we might follow
to reach remote paradises. the exhibition,
which will be on display at three
exhibition institutions in Germany and
Poland, represents the first major retrospective
of the oeuvre of this multimedia
artist. the book offers glimpses
of Goldberg’s work in several media; it
portrays realized as well as unrealized
works in public space, objects, photographs,
drawings, and video works.
of copies. as he works with the
material’s resolution, reduction, and
reconstruction, unusual experimental
motifs come about. Freudenberger then
prints these collages directly onto the
canvas. traces remaining in the work
recall models and sketches; the open
canvas texture results in textile and
painterly surfaces. Everyday objects
become utopian designs reminiscent
of modernist prototypes, early science
fiction visions, or indefinable presentday
occult objects. these are situated
in fictional studio and model spaces
and undefined temporal and spatial
dimensions.
Changing Habits of Seeing and Unsettling the Viewer
Die arbeiten des Konzeptkünstlers
Jochem Hendricks (geb. 1959 in
Frankfurt am Main) sind spektakulär
und präzise zugleich. Hendricks, der
seine sinnreichen ideen mit verschiedensten
Methoden und Medien (Video,
Fotografie, Objekt, text) umsetzt, geht
in seinen arbeiten von uns vertrauten
sehnsüchten und Ängsten aus, die er
dann kritisch, oft humorvoll und nicht
selten ironisch kommentiert. seine
arbeiten zeichnen sich durch eine auf
den ersten Blick nüchtern erscheinende
Ästhetik aus, mit der er ganz bewusst
die Fantasien, Erinnerungen und Vorstellungen
der Betrachter in Gang setzt.
so kreisen seine Konzeptionen seit
vielen Jahren um die Frage, wie Wissen,
the works of the conceptual artist
Jochem Hendricks (b. schlüchtern
Hendricks, who implements his ingenious
ideas using a variety of methods
and media (video, photography, object,
text), takes longings and fears that
are familiar to all of us as his point
of departure in order to comment on
them in a manner that is critical, often
humorous, and not seldom ironic. His
works are characterized by an aesthetic
that seems rather sober at first glance
and that he deliberately uses to activate
the viewer’s fantasies, memories, and
ideas. For many years, his works have
examined how knowledge, suppositions,
and desires arise.
Wie dieser integriert er die politische
teils großformatigen zeichnungen und
begehbaren skulpturen um. Dabei
spannt er den Bogen von Comic strip
situations that quote various forms of
presentation from classical modernism
a systematic interrogation of painting,
unflagging critical engagement of
Das Werk von Kris Martin (geb. 1972
vermittelt die intensive Erfahrung der
Endlichkeit des Lebens. Die zeit ist
essentiell für den Künstler, dessen unablässige
Beschäftigung mit sterblichkeit
und den flüchtigen Eigenschaften
der Kunst seine bisherige Laufbahn
bestimmt hat. seine arbeiten umfassen
installationen, skulpturen, Fotografien,
zeichnungen, schrift und sound. Darin
fragt er auch nach der Möglichkeit von
spiritualität, Ewigkeit, Religion und
Gott. trotz ihrer melancholischen und
romantischen aspekte blitzt in ihnen
oft auch skeptischer Humor auf.
Martin benutzt gefundene Dinge, die
stets ihre eigene Geschichte mitbringen,
oder lässt Objekte, deren Formate
von ganz kleinen bis zu raumfüllenden
installationen reichen, aufwendig
produzieren. Das vorliegende – vom
the art of Kris Martin (b. Kortrijk,
conveys an intense experience of the
finitude of life. time is essential to this
artist, whose relentless engagement
with mortality and the evanescent qualities
of art has defined his rising career.
His works, which include installations,
sculptures, photographs, drawings,
writing, and sound, also inquire into
the possibility of spirituality, eternity,
religion, and God. Despite their melancholy
and romantic aspects, they often
also display flashes of skeptical humor.
Few positions in art currently attract
more attention than the works of
the young sculptor alicja Kwade
(b. Katowice, 1979; lives and works in
Berlin). they show how easy it would
be to lift our construction of reality
off its hinges. in her installations,
objects, and photographs, experiments
in philosophical thought take concrete
shape, reminding us that we cannot
understand everything. Both social
conventions and the laws of physics
are at stake. alicja Kwade’s discreet
interventions in scenes of everyday life
can invert gravity, transmute pebbles
parallel worlds.
the texts in this book are likewise
unusual: in addition to an introduction
about why artists are different, and
Georg Hornemann – Goldschmied
lebt und arbeitet in Düsseldorf) – hat
seit den frühen 1960er Jahren seinen
persönlichen stil und damit verbunden
einen souveränen Umgang mit technik
und Material entwickelt. in seinen
Werken ließ er sich immer wieder von
den unterschiedlichsten stilrichtungen
inspirieren; auch anregungen aus
anderen Künsten setzte er in seinen
Goldschmiedearbeiten um. Bereits
1967 bekam er die erste internationale
auszeichnung für herausragende
schmuckgestaltung und gewann in
Folge fast alle bedeutenden Wettbewerbe.
Das Buch zeigt Hornemanns
frühe schmuckentwürfe der 1960er
und 1970er Jahre, seine faszinierenden
Ringkreationen und seine grandiosen
Juwelenarbeiten, die wie kleine
since the early 1960s, the goldsmith
has developed his personal style and
perfected the masterful use of his
techniques and materials. His works
have drawn inspiration from a wide
range of stylistic sources; he has also
looked to other arts for creative ideas
he has implemented in his goldwork.
since 1967, when he received his first
international award for outstanding
jewelry design, he has won virtually
all important competitions. the book
presents Hornemann’s early jewelry
his fascinating ring creations, and
his splendid work with gemstones—
many of his confections look like tiny
Verwendung einer ungewöhnlichen,
neuen Bildtechnik zahlreiche hinreißende
arbeiten geschaffen. auf einem
hochauflösenden spezial-scanner
arrangiert sie die Blüten und Blätter
verschiedenster tulpenarten und
lässt so scanogramme von intensiver
farblicher Brillanz und ungeheurer
schärfe entstehen. Die scan-Daten
werden anschließend wie bei digitaler
Fotografie belichtet, auf oftmals raumfüllende
Bildträger vergrößert und
hinter Plexiglas montiert.
simons inszeniert die tulpen auch als
eine art Reverenz an barocke holländische
oder flämische Blumenstill leben.
Das lässt mitunter an die „tulpomanie“,
den zuletzt ruinösen Handel mit
tulpen und ihren zwiebeln im Holland
since 1996, Luzia simons (b. 1953,
Brazil; lives and works in Berlin),
employing a novel and extraordinary
imaging technique, has created a large
number of enchanting works that make
up her series stockage. arranging the
flowers and leaves of a wide variety
of tulip species on a specialized highresolution
scanner, she produces scanograms
of intensely brilliant colors
and tremendous acuity. as in digital
photography, the data produced by
the scanner are then output onto often
very large physical media and mounted
behind plexiglass.
simons also stages the tulips as a
sort of homage to Baroque Dutch or
Flemish still lifes with flowers, sometimes
suggesting the “tulipomania”
in seventeenth-century Holland, the
ultimately ruinous trade with tulips
and their bulbs.
Die arbeiten überführen organische
paradoxe und rätselhafte anordnungen.
neben autobiografischen Quellen spielt
Die inspiration durch Fernsehserien
aus der Kindheit und Jugend,
die Bewunderung für Filme macher wie
alex Müller (b. Düren, 1971; lives
to painting and sculpture and stages
rooms as walk-in pictures. Her works
transpose organic materials such as
apples or opium poppy and objects
taken from everyday reality into
fantastic, paradoxical, and enigmatic
arrangements. in addition to autobiographical
sources, the cultural memory
of a society defined by media plays a
central role as the artist devises these
constellations. inspiration drawn from
the television shows of her childhood
and youth, her admiration for filmmakers
such as Peter Greenaway, and
her fascination with mythological
crucial importance in this process. Her
works accordingly oscillate between
identification and secrecy, between the
creation of meaning and hermeticism.
A Fusion of Man and Nature, of Time and Space
Das über dreißigjährige Werk von Leiko
ikemura (geb. 1951 in Mie, Japan, lebt
und arbeitet in Berlin und Köln) besteht
aus Gemälden, aquarellen, zeichnungen
sowie terrakotta- und Bronzeskulpturen.
in den 1980er Jahren widmete
sich die Künstlerin der Malerei, die in
dieser Frühphase über die intensität der
Farbe und den expressiven Duktus eine
starke Emotionalität transportiert. seit
den frühen 1990er Jahren tauchen Mädchenfiguren
als zentrales thema in ihren
Bildern und als Plastiken auf. Leiko
ikemura versteht sich als Grenzgängerin
zwischen japanischer und abendländischer
Kunst. Die okzidentalen Einflüsse
finden sich auch im Kopfmotiv, einem
zweiten Hauptthema ihres schaffens.
in den 2007 begonnenen großformatigen
Landschaften findet eine auseinandersetzung
mit japanischer Kunst in Form
von stilisierten Bergen, Flüssen und
Wolken statt.
Mit einem text von Julian Heynen.
Over more than thirty years, Leiko
ikemura (b. Mie, Japan, 1951; lives and
works in Berlin and Cologne) has built
an oeuvre that encompasses paintings,
watercolors, drawings, and terracotta
and bronze sculptures. in the 1980s,
the artist devoted herself to painting;
in this early phase of her oeuvre, intense
colors and expressive brushwork convey
a sense of strong emotions. since the
early 1990s, figures of girls appear as a
central theme in her pictures and sculptures.
Leiko ikemura sees herself as
an interloper between the arts of Japan
and the Western world. Occidental
influences are also evident in the motif
of the head, a second central theme of
her art. the large-format landscapes she
began work on in 2007 engage Japanese
art in the forms of stylized mountains,
rivers, and clouds.
conjunction with her solo exhibition
artist’s book is divided into four
sections. the first section consists
of black-and-white photocopies
of the sort that frequently
figure as preliminary stages for
the artist’s abstract pictures on
paper and canvas. the second
section contains essays by the art
historian Mihaela Chiriac and
adam szymczyk, the director
of Kunsthalle Basel, that discuss
Chirulescu’s work in depth.
Details from all prints and paintings
on display in the exhibition
appear in full-size reproductions
in the third section. in the fourth
section, illustrations show the
works in their entirety.
group of works from the 1990s
consists of numerous variations
artist who interrogates the images
that define women’s social
bilden eine organische summe aus Material
sind aus transparentem acrylglas oder
durchsichtiger PVC-Folie geschnitten,
gebogen und gefaltet und nehmen
den Betrachter sofort für sich ein. Die
strahlenden neonfarben, gelb, blau,
erleuchten den Raum auf magische
Weise, wobei ihre Ränder durch das
Berta Fischer’s sculptures are of poetic
lightness and luminosity; they constitute
an organic sum of material and
form. Most of her works are cut from
transparent acrylic glass or sheer PVC
film, bent, and folded; they immediately
captivate the beholder. their radiant
luminescent colors—yellow, blue, red,
green, orange, or pearl white—fill the
room with their magical light; natural
light sets their edges ablaze in dazzling
colors, creating lines that look like
drawings in their own right.
in order to render the unparalleled
color effect of the sculptures of Berta
Fischer (b. Düsseldorf, 1973; lives
was printed in nine colors. the stitch
international art scene. in his works,
which occupy their exhibition sites
like organic structures, he envisions
scenarios for possible architectures
the balloon-like spheres, most of which
the works of Henning Bohl
(b. 1975, lives and works in
what the artist himself does as
well as to other (tendencies in)
art. Bohl, that is to say, aims
both at a narrative register and
at how a story is told. the book
presents his new installations,
which are pared down to the essential.
Large-format canvases,
for instance, onto which the
artist has collaged figures cut
from paper, are mounted on
plasterboard elements; the latter
are in turn arranged in stacks
on wooden trestles, constituting
a hybrid between sculpture
and architecture: the pictures
become props; their supports,
conversely, are imbued with a
sculptural and conceptual value
of their own. With an essay by
dreidimensionalen Räumen: eine
bezieht sich auf einen konkreten
um die Differenz zwischen
den Ebenen von Wirklichkeit,
Wahrnehmung und erinnertem
Bild. Für seine ausstellung
Working with extraordinary
precision, Christian Haake
(b. Bremerhaven, 1969; lives
miniatures of three-dimensional
spaces: a kitchen, a trailer, a
ticket counter, a compulsive
hoarder’s apartment. His objects
never refer to a specific existing
place, as his aim is not to
generate an identical replica, but
rather to bring out the difference
between the planes of reality,
perception, and the remembered
image. For the exhibition White
Elephant, which this book documents,
Haake built a model of
a sixties-style store entrance set
into the elongated room of the
hosting institution. the architecture
he found thus becomes a
backdrop for potential plots.
Farbe, Raum und Kontext im Werk von Sauerbruch Hutton
Colour, Space and Context in the Work of Sauerbruch Hutton
Umweltbundesamt/Federal Environment agency, Dessau
v GsW-Hauptverwaltung/GsW Headquarters, Berlin
Performance.
Mit Essays von Jonathan Glancey,
Louisa Hutton und Matthias
sauerbruch.
sauerbruch Hutton are unique among
contemporary architects in their redefinition
of colour as an essential material
of architecture. the polychromatic
treatment of their buildings created
over the past twenty years reflect and
concentrate the colours, forms and
energies of the contemporary city.
simultaneously image and sculpture,
ornament and text, they allow the complex
technical reality of a building to
disappear behind a powerful aesthetic
experience.
Beside sauerbruch Hutton’s renowned
buildings such as the GsW Headquarters
in Berlin, the Federal Environmental
agency Dessau or Munich’s
Brandhorst Museum, this book also
shows their more recent work. Highlighting
the sensual force of colour,
noshe’s vibrant photographs reveal the
architects’ search for the expression of
an architecture of sustainability that
transcends both technical perfection
and energy-efficient performance.
Words by Jonathan Glancey, Louisa
Hutton and Matthias sauerbruch
Fotografische Dokumente einer aufregenden Zeit
Photographic Documents of an Exciting Era
“Wigstock” Concert at Tompkins Square Park, 1988
v Ai Weiwei. Williamsburg, Brooklyn, 1983
Die Jahre 1983 bis 1993 verbrachte
der Chinese ai Weiwei (geb. 1957 in
Peking, lebt und arbeitet in Peking)
in new York. in dieser zeit machte er
über 10.000 schwarz-Weiß-Fotografien.
nachdem sie jahrelang unberührt
geblieben waren, wurde 2010 eine
von ai getroffene auswahl von 227
Fotografien entwickelt und im Pekinger
three shadows art Centre ausgestellt.
Diese Bilder sind nun erstmalig in einem
Bildband zu sehen. in den 1980er
Jahren war new York für intellektuelle
aus China auch ein Ort der Befreiung
von jenen Repressionen, denen sie in
ihrer Heimat ausgesetzt waren. Mit
seiner Kamera fing ai die zustände in
new York ein: straßenschlachten im
tompkins square Park, transvestiten
beim Wigstock-Festival, Obdachlose
in der Bowery. Dazu kamen Porträts
von chinesischen und amerikanischen
Künstlern und Freunden.
Mit texten von John tancock und
stephanie H. tung, Kurator, three
shadows art Centre, Peking sowie
einem Gespräch zwischen ai Weiwei
und stephanie H. tung.
the Chinese artist ai Weiwei (b. Beijing
1957; lives and works in Beijing) spent
the years from 1983 to 1993 in new
York. During this time, he took more
than 10,000 black-and-white photographs.
after leaving them untouched
for years, ai made a selection of 227
photographs that were developed
and shown at the three shadows art
Centre, Beijing, in 2010. these pictures
are now shown for the first time in an
illustrated book. in the 1980s, new
York also promised Chinese artists
freedom from the repressions they
faced in their native country. ai’s
camera captured scenes of life in new
York: riots in tompkins square Park,
transvestites at the Wigstock festival,
homeless people in the Bowery. Other
pictures are portraits of Chinese and
american artists and friends.
With essays by John tancock and
Fashion Made in Germany—From the 1940s Until Today
v Rena Lange, German Vogue, 2009
Mitte der 1980er Jahre war zum ersten
Mal die Rede von den „Deutschen
es nicht mehr, Joop macht jetzt Wunderkind,
die igedo heißt CPD und statt
zur Münchener Modewoche fährt man
auf die Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week
mit den ateliers am Hausvogteiplatz
begann und mit den nachkriegsdesignern
Oestergaard und Richter ein
glamouröses zwischenhoch erreichte,
die deutsche Bekleidungsindustrie
einen Umsatz von 20 Milliarden Euro
the mid-1980s were the first time
grew—full of verve, its aim was
to advance awareness of the history of
German fashion, which had begun with
the studios near Berlin’s Hausvogteiplatz
and reached a glamorous zenith
with the post-war designers Oestergaard
art in new York; Yilmaz Dziewior ist
Direktor des Kunsthaus Bregenz und
der Bundesrepublik Deutschland;
Uta Grosenick ist Herausgeberin
zahlreicher anthologien zum thema
zeitgenössische Kunst.
Das Buch richtet sich an ein Publikum,
das heute schon wissen möchte, was
morgen in der Kunstszene läuft. Damit
wird es zum unverzichtbaren Kompendium
für sammler und Kuratoren, für
Kunststudenten und Kunstinteressierte.
aber auch Designer, Grafiker, Modemacher
und Werbeagenturen holen sich
anregungen in der bildenden Kunst.
Mit der auswahl der Künstler setzt
das Buch weltweite trends und wird
durch seine distinguierte, futuristische
Gestaltung zum „Must have“.
The Art of Tomorrow presents an
international selection of seventy-seven
young artists, with four pages dedicated
to each, who show great potential
for the future. they were selected by
three insiders from the art world: Laura
Hoptman is a curator in the department
of Painting and sculpture at the
Museum of Modern art in new York;
Yilmaz Dziewior is the director of
the Kunsthaus Bregenz and a member
of the acquisitions committee of the
collection of contemporary art of
the Federal Republic of Germany;
Uta Grosenick has edited numerous
anthologies on contemporary art.
the book is intended for an audience
that wants to know today what will be
happening in tomorrow’s art scene. it is
thus an indispensable compendium for
collectors and curators, for art students
and others interested in art. Designers,
graphic designers, fashion designers,
and advertising agencies all derive ideas
and inspiration from the visual arts.
With its selection of artists, the book
posits clear worldwide trends; its distinguished
and futuristic design make the
book a must-have.
sergeJ Jensen
Die erste lang erwartete Monografie
The First Long-Awaited Monograph
Untitled, 2005
Malerei im klassischen sinne spielt bei
sergej Jensen (geb. 1971 in Kopenhagen,
lebt und arbeitet in Berlin und new
York) nur eine nebenrolle: anstelle
von Leinwand verwendet Jensen Jute,
nessel oder Jeans. Er näht diese stoffe
zusammen und lässt dabei die nähte
sichtbar, um den flüchtigen Eindruck
einer zeichnung zu erwecken. andere
bemalt er mit Gouache, acryllack oder
textmarker, doch meistens appliziert
Jensen malereifremde Materialien
wie Flicken, Geldscheine, Gewürze,
Glasperlen oder Glitzerstaub. Er hängt
seine stoffe aus dem Fenster, damit
sonne und Regen sie patinieren, behandelt
sie mit Chlor oder mischt Bleiche
in die Farbe, um ihnen die Leuchtkraft
zu entziehen. Jensens Bilder stehen
ständig am abgrund, doch sie kippen
nicht. Gebrochenheit wird durch zarte,
sinnliche Gesten kompensiert, Verfall
und schmutz durch eine fast dekorative
schönheit.
Mit texten von Helmut Draxler, Peter
Eleey, Jacob Fabricius, Rainald Goetz,
Dirk von Lowtzow, Melanie Ohnemus,
susanne Pfeffer und Heidi zuckerman
Jacobson.
For sergej Jensen (b. Copenhagen,
1971, lives and works in Berlin and
new York), painting in the classical
sense plays only a minor role: in lieu of
canvas, Jensen uses jute, coarse cotton,
and jeans. He sews these fabrics together
leaving the seams visible to evoke the
fleeting impression of a drawing, and
he colors others with gouache, acrylics,
and markers, but Jensen more often
applies materials foreign to painting,
such as patches, paper money, spices,
beads, and glitter. Hanging his fabrics
from windows, Jensen lets the sun
and rain contribute a patina and treats
them with chlorine and paints mixed
with bleach to reduce their brilliance.
Jensen’s paintings are always at the
edge of the abyss, but they do not
fall. their brokenness is compensated
by delicate sensual gestures—their
decay and dirt by an almost decorative
beauty.
Michael sailstorfer’s (b. Velden/
visual perception and speak
through sound, vibrations, and
even smells that address the
viewer’s other senses. He removes
the most ordinary objects
from their original context, dissecting
and deforming and then
reassembling them, thus creating
powerful installations and
sculptures: he transforms street
Revealing the invisible in the
talents of alicja Kwade
Pebbles polished like diamonds,
a euro-pallet painted and buffed
Bekannt wurde tatjana Doll
Babuschkas … gemalt in
Lackfarben. Dennoch zeigen
sondern bewahren sich ihre
Unabhängigkeit. Ebenso verhält
es sich mit den feinen – oftmals
in ihrer Malerei bekommen die
Figuren durch die Künstlerin
eine eigenständige Existenz.
tatjana Doll (geb. 1970 in
in Berlin. im vorliegenden Buch
Her oversized enamel canvasses
of everyday objects put tatjana
Doll’s name on the map: cars,
trains, containers, pictograms,
babushkas … and yet the
pictures do not show reality.
instead they retain their
independence. this is also
true of her fine drawings. Like
the objects in her paintings,
the artist lends her figures an
thanks to the almost complete
absence of figurative elements,
Eberhard Havekost’s recent
works mark a visible caesura.
He questions the authenticity
of pictures, broaching the
issue within the medium of
painting. this is where means
that were developed earlier get
connected: reflective or matte
areas of projection, frontal views
and changes in per spective, or
the examination of culturally
standardized design. Eberhard
Havekost was born in Dresden
in 1967. today he is one of the
most important artists of his
generation. in October 2010, he
began his tenure as professor at
Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. the
authors of the texts are Ulrich
Loock, Barry schwabsky, and
Werke von zwei bedeutenden Künstlern des Surrealismus
A Collection of the Works of Two of the Most Important Artists in
Surrealism
Die sexuell aufgeladenen Werke
von Louise Bourgeois und Hans
Bellmer weisen bemerkenswerte
Parallelen auf, obwohl sich
die beiden nie begegnet sind.
Louise Bourgeois (1911 – 2010)
setzte sich skeptisch mit
dem tradierten Bild der Frau
auseinander, Hans Bellmer
(1902 – 1975) schuf mit der
Puppe die ideale Frau, in der
sich alle seine Wünsche und
Fantasien widerspiegeln. Die
Publikation setzt die beiden
Künstler erstmals miteinander
in Dialog: Werke, die durch
den männlichen und weiblichen
Künstlerblick sowie persönliche
Obsessionen und Begehren
geprägt sind. Mit einem bisher
unveröffentlichten text von
Elfriede Jelinek und texten
the sexually charged works
of Louise Bourgeois and Hans
Bellmer reveal remarkable
parallels, even though the artists
never actually met. Louise
Bourgeois (1911–2010) skeptically
examined the traditional
image of women, Hans Bellmer
(1902–1975) created in the puppet
an ideal woman in which
all his desires and fantasies
are reflected. this publication
establishes for the first time a
dialogue between two artists,
which are marked by the views
of a male and female artist,
respectively, as well as by
personal obsessions and desires.
Alle Skulpturen von Georg Baselitz erstmals in einem Buch
The First Book With All of George Baselitz’s Sculptures
Georg Baselitz, geboren
1939 als Hans-Georg Kern
in Deutschbaselitz, sachsen,
verstößt in seinem Werk kontinuierlich
gegen festgelegte Kategorien
und Regelmäßigkeiten. in
der skulptur, der sich Baselitz
ab 1979 widmet, kämpft er wie
in seiner Malerei gegen Harmonie
und symmetrie. Er bearbeitet
das Holz mit Kettensäge,
Beil und stecheisen. Durch den
rohen Kraftakt entstehen in der
skulptur schroffe Linien, Kerben
und Einschnitte. skulptur
ist, so der Künstler, primitiver,
brutaler und vorbehaltloser als
Malerei, viel weniger verschlüsselt.
Das vorliegende Buch ist
ein Catalogue raisonné, der
von Modell für eine Skulptur
(1979–1980) bis zu Volk Ding
Zero (2009) alle 58 skulpturen,
die in den letzten 30 Jahren entstanden
sind, dokumentiert.
Georg Baselitz, born Hans-
Georg Kern in Deutschbaselitz,
saxony, in 1939, continuously
contravenes set categories and
regularities in his work. in
sculpture, in which Baselitz first
began to work in 1979, he fights
against harmony and symmetry
just as he does in his paintings.
Baselitz works the wood with a
chain saw, hatchet, and chisel.
the raw feats of strength create
abrupt lines, notches, and incisions
in the sculpture. sculpture,
the artist has said, is more
primitive, more brutal, and more
unconditional than painting,
and much less encoded. this
volume is a catalogue raisonné
documenting all fifty-eight
sculptures created over the
past thirty years, from his first
sculpture Model for a Sculpture
(1979–1980) to his most recent,
the urge towards the new is the
driving force behind development
and creativity, pushing
on, revealing what was hitherto
undiscovered, and engendering
enthusiasm and longing. Yet
in the history of society, it has
never been as necessary as
today, at the beginning of the
21st century, to venture into
something new. in the face of
a worldwide economic crisis,
along with ecological, social,
ethnic, and cultural problems, it
is absolutely essential to change
structures of thought and action
on all levels. in this book, international
key personalities—
pragmatic thought leaders who
are at the same time hands-on
doers—explain how the new
emerges in conversations with
the entrepreneur Ulrich Dietz.
Michael schirner treats the
visual worlds of mass culture
and high culture as well as the
perception of images communicated
via media. He does not
create new images. His images
are images about images. He
reduces the elements of the
image to a minimum, leaving
everything out that can be left
out. Magazines, newspapers,
films, television, the internet,
advertising, and art are his image
Massenkommunikation wird Kunst
Where Mass Communication Ends and Art Begins
tobias Rehberger (geb. 1966
in Esslingen, lebt und arbeitet
in Frankfurt am Main), hat
seit den 1990er Jahren die Rolle
der Kunst in der Kommunikationsgesellschaft
entscheidend
weiterentwickelt. seine strategien
erweitern den traditionellen
Begriff des Künstlers, der
Kunstproduktion, der ausstellung
und des Publikums um die
interaktive Benutzerdimension.
in der Regel gehören Lampen,
Liegen oder Vasen zu dem Material,
das Rehberger im sinne
der Fragestellung bearbeitet,
ab wann die Dinge Kunst sind.
Das vorliegende Buch zeigt den
ansatz von tobias Rehberger,
Publikationen nicht als rein
funktionale informationsträger
zu gebrauchen, sondern als
elementare und eigenständige
Bestandteile zu entwerfen.
tobias Rehberger (b. Esslingen,
1966; lives and works in Frankfurt
am Main) has crucially
advanced the role of art in our
communication society. His
strategies expand the traditional
concepts of the artist, the production
of art, the exhibition,
and the public to include the dimension
of interactive uses. as
a rule, lamps, sofas, or vases are
the material Rehberger employs
to raise questions about when
objects become art. the present
book illustrates that Rehberger’s
approach is not simply to use
the publications that accompany
his exhibitions functionally, as
a medium for information, but
rather to design them as elemental,
autonomous components of
the exhibition.
