Die Frühen arbeiten
Gestik und Struktur
Gesture and Structure
Klebestreifen auf Papier, 1965
nach der gefeierten Wiederentdeckung
auf der documenta 12 richtet sich das
weltweite interesse an das Werk von
Charlotte Posenenske (1930–1985)
vornehmlich auf die technoiden
Objekte, mit denen die minimalistische
Konzeptkünstlerin bekannt wurde,
und nur gelegentlich auch auf ihre
Malerei – als Vorarbeit. Diese im
Besonderen zu behandeln, ist nun
an der zeit. nach den aussagen der
Künstlerin sind ihre Bilder an Cézanne,
Mondrian und El Lissitzky orientiert.
Den kontinuierlichen Übergang zu
Objekten, den sie gleichwohl als Bruch
empfand, bilden ihre Reliefs. Welche
künstlerischen Positionen die frühen
Raster, die schwebenden strukturen
und die impulsiven Farbschmisse ihrer
spachtelarbeiten beeinflusst haben
mögen und welche Ähnlichkeiten es
mit arbeiten von zeitgenossen gibt,
diskutiert zum ersten Mal Philipp
Kaiser in seinem Essay.
the interest in the work of Charlotte
Posenenske (1930–1985) aroused by the
celebrated rediscovery of her art at documenta
12 focuses primarily on the technoid
objects that earned this minimalist
conceptual artist her renown, with only
occasional glances at her paintings—
seen as preparatory studies. the time
has come for a dedicated examination
of these works. according to the artist’s
own statements, her pictures drew inspiration
from Cézanne, Mondrian, and
El Lissitzky. Her reliefs constitute the
seamless transition—though she saw it
as a clear break—to the objects. Which
artistic positions may have influenced
the early grids, the floating structures,
and the impulsiveness with which she
flung paint on the canvas in the works
she created using a palette knife? in
which ways does her art bear similarities
to the works of her contemporaries?
these are some of the questions Philipp
Kaiser’s essay begins to address.
Wiederholung als Prinzip
Repetition as Principle
Charlotte Posenenske, Drehflügel der Serie E, 1967, Repro
dasselbe anders / immer dasselbe, so
der titel der gemeinsamen ausstellung
von Charlotte Posenenske (1930–1985)
und Peter Roehr (1944–1968) im
Wiesbadener Kunsthaus. Beide documenta-teilnehmer
sind erst nach ihrem
frühen tode zu Ruhm gekommen. Gegen
den zeitgeist von 1967 hatten beide
Wiederholung als Gesetzmäßigkeit
natürlicher, industrieller und sozialer
abläufe erkannt und darin das Prinzip
ihrer Kunst wiedergefunden. sie arbeiteten
in serien, entsubjektivierten die
arbeit und liquidierten so den traditionellen
status des Künstlers, der Unikate
als Basis des kommerziellen Kunstbetriebs
schafft. „Less is more“ galt für
Michael Reiters Swinging Geometry
und Martina Wolfs Bewegte Bilder.
dasselbe anders / immer dasselbe
[the same thing another way / always
the same thing]: that is the title of
Charlotte Posenenske (1930–1985) and
Peter Roehr’s (1944–1968) joint exhibition
at the Kunsthaus, Wiesbaden. Both
artists, who contributed to documenta,
did not achieve fame until after their
early deaths. against the zeitgeist of
1967, both recognized that repetition
constituted the law of natural, industrial,
and social processes, and found
in it the guiding principle of their art.
they worked in series, stripping their
productions of subjective qualities and
liquidating the traditional status of the
artist as the creator of unique objects
on which the commercial art world is
based. “Less is more:” that was true
for both artists, whose works are now
widely acknowledged as representative
of a radical late-modern critique of
commercialism. their art, which was
rarely shown during their lifetime, is
now included in the collections of leading
museums in Germany and abroad.
the exhibition of Posenenske’s work
is accompanied by a program of events
featuring Michael Reiter’s Swinging
Geometry and Martina Wolf’s Moving
Images.
