thoralf Knobloch (geb. 1962 in Bautzen,
lebt und arbeitet in Berlin) gehört zu
jener namhaften Phalanx ostdeutscher
Maler, die unter großer Beachtung neue
figürliche Positionen in die Gegenwartskunst
bringen. Der Künstler studierte
zeitgleich mit Eberhard Havekost, Frank
nitsche und thomas scheibitz an der
Hochschule der Bildenden Künste in
Dresden. Knoblochs Gemälde zeigen
das alltägliche; scheinbar belanglose
Motive, wahrgenommen in der nächsten
Umgebung. sein Blick ist dabei distanziert,
wertfrei, jedoch nicht ohne anteilnahme.
seine arbeiten wirken seltsam
entrückt, dem zeitlichen enthoben. indem
Knobloch das Bildgeschehen einem
temporalen Verlauf entzieht und es damit
aus einem erzählenden zusammenhang
löst, lenkt er die Wahrnehmung
des Betrachters auf den Bildgegenstand
und hält ihn dazu an, diesen mit eigenen
Erinnerungen auszufüllen.
Das Buch erscheint zu Knoblochs
ausstellungen im Kunstmuseum Dieselkraftwerk
Cottbus (2012) und in der
städtischen Galerie Dresden (2013).
Dargestellt werden darin die verschiedenen
Werkphasen Knoblochs sowie
neue Motive aus seiner letzten großen
amerikareise. Mit texten von Max
Henry, Perdita von Kraft, Johannes
schmidt und Jörg sperling.
thoralf Knobloch (b. Bautzen 1962;
lives and works in Berlin) is among
the renowned phalanx of East-German
painters who have attracted a great deal
of attention by bringing new figurative
positions back to contemporary art. the
artist trained at the Dresden academy
of Fine arts, where Eberhard Havekost,
Frank nitsche, and thomas scheibitz
were his fellow students. Knobloch’s
paintings show the mundane world;
ostensibly trivial motifs he has observed
in his immediate environment. His gaze
is distant, impartial, though not without
sympathy. His works seem strangely
aloof, abstracted from the temporal
world. By withdrawing the painted
action from any sequence of events,
isolating it from narrative contexts, he
renders the beholder aware of the object
he depicts, urging him to complete it by
supplying his own recollections.
the book is published in conjunction
with the exhibition of Knobloch’s work
at the Kunstmuseum Dieselkraftwerk,
Cottbus (2012), and the städtische
Galerie Dresden (2013). it offers a
survey of the different periods of
Knobloch’s oeuvre and presents new
motifs from his most recent grand tour
of america. With essays by Max Henry,
Perdita von Kraft, Johannes schmidt,
and Jörg sperling.

Erscheinung unserer Welt. Dabei ist die
stadt ein zentraler Lebens- und Erfahrungsraum.
Hier findet Havekost Motive
und situationen, in denen sich urbane
Lebenswelten einer aufstrebenden Konsumgesellschaft
phänotypisch spiegeln.
Die komplexen strukturen verarbeitet
er in ausschnitten, zum Beispiel von
Fassaden, straßen, autos, schaufenstern
und Passanten. Gefiltert und bildnerisch
transformiert, verdichten sich
diese ansichten des alltags zu einer
Bestandsaufnahme gegenwärtiger Erscheinungen
von architektur, Mobilität,
Kommunikation, Konsum und Freizeit.
im Rahmen des Kulturjahres „Deutschland
und indien 2011–2012: Unendliche
Möglichkeiten“ widmen zwei indische
Museen Eberhard Havekost als einzigem
deutschen Künstler Einzel ausstellungen.
the pictures of Eberhard Havekost
(b. Dresden 1967; lives and works in
Berlin) are the results of a persistent
analysis of the outward appearance of
our world. the city constitutes a central
environment of his life and experience,
supplying Havekost with motifs and
situations that phenotypically reflect the
urban lifeworlds of a rising consumer
society. He integrates these complex
structures into his works by using
details, for example, of façades, streets,
cars, shop windows, and passersby. Filtered
and transformed by the painter’s
art, these views of everyday life
condense into a stocktaking of contemporary
manifestations of architecture,
mobility, communication, consumption,
and leisure. as part of the culture
year “Germany and india 2011–2012:
infinite Opportunities,” two indian museums
present solo shows of Eberhard
Havekost’s work; he is the only German
artist to receive this honor.
