“Clear ideas result in a clear design,” Matthias liked to say,
and one could generally rely upon his analytical intellect,
honed through a lifetime as a university professor. And so it
wasn’t any surprise that in furnishing the house, they generally
preferred pieces that were neither overblown nor domineering,
but instead sophisticated and restrained. Their three
children had long since moved out and were leading their own
lives, which meant that Anne and Matthias no longer needed
to weigh “practical considerations” with their furnishings
and were free to realize their highly individualistic tastes. And
there was one more dictum that Anne and Matthias consistently
maintained: never compromise on the materials! This
credo also applied to the small “incidentals,” including various
side tables, candlesticks and vases.
Materials and craftsmanship both needed to satisfy the couple’s
high demands. And because all the necessary elements
for their domestic furnishings could be found at Lambert, their
path often led to the same supplier. While Matthias was
responsible for the clean lines, Anne enriched the ambience
with a skillful juxtaposition of styles: in front of the stuccoornamented
fireplace, she placed a comfortable armchair
with a slim modern design. Above and around the restrained
forms of the dining ensemble, there were a luxuriant chandelier
and candelabra with a nostalgic touch, perfectly integrating
with the villa’s interior architecture.
