If there was anything that could confound the firmly settled
order of Nick Singer’s home, it was weekends together with
his partner Paula. She left a trace wherever she went, be it
an abandoned magazine, a piece of clothing or a perfume
bottle. During the weekdays, Nick always put everything back
in its established spot. He wasn’t a quibbler, but he loved the
immaculate atmosphere of his home interiors. A truly beautiful
piece of furniture simply deserved to make an impact, just
through its design, materials and perfect workmanship. For
example, the minimalist form of the secretary desk gained an
unexpected power from the solid walnut construction and the
simple oiled finish, a power that Nick did not want to disturb
with supplementary objects. Nonetheless, it was inevitable
that Paula would choose exactly this desk and regularly convert
it into her makeup table, so that instead of his laptop,
he found it occupied with nail polish bottles, makeup tubes
and powder compacts, much to his dismay. With his practiced
eye, Nick could see that this accent piece had been made
by someone who understood the craft, working with great
attention to detail. The same applied to the candlesticks with
their finely hammered surfaces, objects that he knew had
been fashioned by sand casting before hand finishing and
nickel plating to a high gloss. There was great artistry within.

“So how would it be with a bit more color in your life?” asked
Ralph, sinking into the chaise longue and bobbing his vivid
blue sneakers in the air as if by chance. It was impossible to
overlook Nick’s taste for monochromatic color palettes, nor
his fondness for silver and other metals. On more than one
occasion, Ralph had been treated to a lengthy discourse on
the precise technique of a mirror edging or a handmade bowl.
Once you got Nick inspired, he didn’t run out anytime soon.
