Tipped Ears – Glueing & Trimming

And then there are the
ears.…
As an adult Sheltie one third
– 1/3 – of the ear should
have the desired tip.
So how can we make this
happen?
As puppies the ears often tip
very nicely, but suddenly one
or both ears begin to rise.
Then we have to act quickly!
Do not let the ears be risen
for a longer period;
your chances of getting them
down will decrease!
As soon as you notice that
the ears are on the rise, start
by applying Vaseline on the
OUTSIDE of the tip (i.e. the
1/3 of the ear that should
tip). Apply richly, all the way
to down to the skin. When
this is done, apply talc or
baby powder. Brush up the
fur so you can apply the
powder close to the skin and
brush again. Repeat this
three to four times until the
ear almost dries because of
the powder. Make sure you
are being wasteful! Repeat
this procedure as soon as
you notice that the ears are
rising again. You may have
to do this every other day,
every week or every other
week depending on the ears.
But don’t give up!
This usually holds the ears
in place until the puppy is
four months old. At this
stage it will start teething
and the ears start living their
own lives.
