Green R&D Services
The focus of the joint European
project Green R&D Services was the development
of a sector specific methodology
to enable European Research & Development
(R&D) organisations to adopt
the Eco-Management & Audit Scheme
(EMAS II) and to implement environmental
benchmarking, based on indicators and
processes from EMAS II.
The methodology, which has been
developed, meets the specific demands
of R&D organisations by the identification
of measures to improve the environmental
performance of R&D processes and
further to influence the environmental impact
of R&D products in their lifecycle, all
embedded in the processes of EMAS II.
The implementation steps of the
process oriented environmental management
instrument “EMAS II” in the participating
six European R&D organisations
were supported with the benchmarking
on process oriented indicators such as
water-, energy- and material resources
used and waste-, waste water, air emissions
produced within the R&D processes.
Through this benchmarking existing weak
points of the participating partners could
be identified, goals formulated and
remedial measures taken.
The research has been accomplished
by an empirical study to identify complementary
product (outcome) oriented
environmental management systems
such as ABC-Analysis, Environmental
Impact Assessment (EIA), Ecological
Accounting, Ecological Checklists (EC),
Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Environmental
Performance Indicators (EPI), Product
Line Analysis (PLA) and Eco Design/Design
for Environment (DfE) and evaluate their
potential usage in R&D organisations. The
results highlight some trends for the utilisation
of these systems and the gained
indicators obtained by the application
of these systems, can now be used for
product oriented benchmarking.
All along with the implementation and
validation of the EMAS II and further with
the accompanying research activities,
Best Management Practices (BMPs) and
supportive tools have been developed
and are now available to help European
R&D organisations to define and
implement EMAS II. With the provision of
a web-based information platform under

a broad dissemination of the project
results, with the focus of promoting EMAS
II implementation and environmental
benchmarking in European R&D organisations,
is ensured.
