people. "Il tombe enfin! ... et se relève Roi!"
- quotes Franz Liszt at the end of his episode.
("In the end he falls and rises as king!")
In Beethoven's "Appassionata", the inner
passionate conflict with fate finds no triumphant
ending. The sonata acts as Beethoven’s
mirror – reflecting his increasing
deafness, his inner struggle and his overpowering
emotions which in his work are
rendered not only audible, but palpable.
The sonata is so vivid that already with
the first three notes one is immersed in
the dark underworld of the subconscious.

piano arrangement. No one else succeeds
in presenting such a magnificent work as a
piece for piano so brilliantly, without diminishing
or reducing it in any way. In defiance
of all of life's dangers, Beethoven as well
as Liszt appear here in the fullest bloom
of themselves. A rebel and a virtuoso appear
united.
The "Sonata quasi fantasia" is a jewel of
classical piano music. While the title is reminiscent
of Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata",
