Draht und Kabel –
die Branche boomt
Demnächst findet in Düsseldorf die
Draht- und Kabelfachmesse wire 2008
statt. Der Veranstalter, die Messe Düsseldorf,
meldet, dass im Januar 2008
die Endergebnisse der wire 2006 bereits
weit übertroffen waren: Bis Mitte
Januar hatten sich 1.080 Aussteller aus
50 Nationen angemeldet, und rund
37.000 Besucher, davon 22.000 von
außerhalb Deutschlands, werden erwartet.
Die wire unterstreicht damit
aufs Neue ihre Stellung als Branchenleitmesse.
Vergrößerter
NIEHOFF-Stand
Leistungsprogramm vorzustellen.
Um die zahlreichen Gäste, die
NIEHOFF auf seinem Stand (10C18) erwartet,
zu Gesprächen in ungestörter
Konferenzatmosphäre zu empfangen,
bewirten und gleichzeitig einen repräsentativen
Querschnitt des Produktionsprogrammes
vorführen zu können,
musste die Standfläche erweitert
werden. Da die eben erdige Fläche
nicht mehr ausgeweitet werden konnte,
präsentiert sich NIEHOFF jetzt erstmals
mit einem zweigeschossigen
Messe stand.
Eine weitere Voraussetzung für eine
erfolgreiche Messeteilnahme ist auch
die NIEHOFF-Vertretertagung kurz vor
der wire. Angehörige des Stammhauses,
der Zweigwerke und Tochtergesellschaften,
der Vertriebs- und Ser -
vice büros sowie der weltweiten Vertretungen
treffen sich im Stammhaus.
Auf einem Zweitagesseminar werden
die jüngsten Informationen über die
Marktentwicklung, die NIEHOFF-Technologie
und NIEHOFF-Projekte vermittelt.
Auf der wire können die Kundenbetreuer
mit diesem Wissen wiederum
ihre Kunden unterstützen.
Energiebedarf und
Datenflut
In den industrialisierten wie industriell
wachsenden Ländern steigt der Bedarf
an Energie, weshalb große Mengen an
Kabeln und Leitungen benötigt werden.
Ähnliches lässt sich auch über das
Kommunikationswesen sagen. Die
Draht- und Kabelhersteller stehen unter
dem Druck, sich angesichts hoher
Anforderungen der Abnehmer, steigender
Rohstoffpreise und eines starken
internationalen Wettbewerbs behaupten
zu müssen. Eine wesentliche
Erfolgsvoraussetzung sind Produk -
tionseinrichtungen, die sparsam im
Verbrauch von Energie, Rohstoffen
und Betriebsstoffen sind, sich unabhängig
vom Geschick des jeweiligen
Bedieners sicher betreiben lassen, zuverlässig
arbeiten, und es ermög -
lichen, die in den verarbeiteten Werkstoffen
vorhandenen physikalischen
Eigenschaften voll auszunutzen. Die
von NIEHOFF und seinen Partnern entwickelten
Maschinen und Anlagen erfüllen
diese Kriterien und geben den
Anwendern die Möglichkeit, flexibel
auf die Marktentwicklung zu reagieren.
Das Programm, das NIEHOFF und
seine Partner aus einer Hand anbieten,
umfasst nahezu alle Maschinen und
Anlagen, die zur Fertigung von Drähten
aus Nichteisen metallen und von
Daten- und Spezialkabeln nötig sind,
und reicht hin bis zur Konzeption und
Einrichtung kompletter Draht- und
Kabelfabriken. Eine Produktauswahl
wird auf dem NIEHOFF-Stand (10C18)
und dem benachbarten Stand der
NIEHOFF-BÜHLER GmbH NBM (10D18)
vorgeführt.
Wires and cables –
industry is booming
Die wire 2008 wire 2008
Soon the wire 2008 wire and cable
trade fair in Düsseldorf will take place.
Messe Düsseldorf, the organizer, announced
that by January 2008 the final
results of the wire 2006 had already
been easily surpassed. By mid-
January 1,080 exhibitors from 50 countries
had registered and around 37,000
visitors, 22,000 from outside Germany,
are expected. This underlines once
again the position of the wire as the
leading trade fair for the wire and cable
industry.
Expanded NIEHOFF stand
For technology company NIEHOFF the
wire has always been the location to
present its range of products and services
with a large team of employees,
associates and subsidiaries from international
sales partners. To be able to
welcome the large number of guests
NIEHOFF expects to be visiting its
stand (10C18) and to be able to talk to
them and entertain them in a conference
atmosphere without interference,
while presenting a representative
cross-section of the company’s
range of products at the same time,
the stand has required enlargement.
With little available potential left for
expansion at floor level, NIEHOFF will
therefore be appearing with a twostorey
stand this time.
Another precondition for a successful
fair participation is the NIEHOFF
agents meeting which takes place just
before the wire exhibition. Representatives
from the company’s headquarters,
branches and subsidiaries, sales
and service offices and agencies from
all around the world come together to
meet at the company’s headquarters.
This two-day seminar is the platform
from which all the latest information
about market developments, NIEHOFF
technology and NIEHOFF projects is
shared. At wire, customer advisers will
then be perfectly equipped with this
knowledge to offer every assistance
and support to their customers.
Demand for energy and
floods of data
In industrialized as well as industrially
developing nations the demand for
energy is increasing. Therefore, extensive
amounts of cables and wires are
necessary. In principle, the same applies
to communication. Wire and cable
manufacturers are under pressure
to succeed in the face of higher customer
requirements, increasing prices
for raw materials and increasingly
strong international competition. One
of the key preconditions for success is
production equipment which makes
efficient use of energy, raw materials
and operating resources, which can be
run reliably without dependency on
the skill of each operator, and which
allows the physical characteristics offered
by the materials being processed
to be exploited to the full.
The machinery and lines developed by
NIEHOFF and its partners meet these
and other criteria while giving users
the means at the same time to react
flexibly to developments in the markets.
The range of products and services
offered from a single source by
NIEHOFF and its partners covers just
about every conceivable machine and
plant required for the production of
wires from non-ferrous metals and of
data cables and special cables. It also
includes concept development for and
fitting out of complete wire and cable
factories. A selection of these products
will be on display on the NIEHOFF
stand (10C18) and the adjacent stand
of NIEHOFF-BÜHLER GmbH NBM
(10D18) joint venture.
Die Branche blickt derzeit
nach Düsseldorf, wo
in Kürze die Branchenleitmesse
wire 2008
stattfindet.
Was Sie „eben -
Messestand. Die Vorteile dieser Glühen für die Fertigung
von Drähten aus Kupferlegierungen entnehmen
Sie dem Beitrag nebenan.
Dear Friends of NIEHOFF,
All eyes in the wire and cable industry are currently on
Düsseldorf where the leading trade show wire 2008 is
due to be staged shortly. The number of exhibitors has
increased once again, which underlines the importance
of the trade fair, but has also created the difficulty
for some exhibitors of not being able to extend
their exhibition space accordingly. In order to be able
to provide a representative range of our products nevertheless,
we at NIEHOFF have moved up on the first
floor and now wish to invite you to visit us for the first
time at a two-storey stand (10C18). What you will be
able to see at „ground level“ we explain on pages 4
and 5 of this issue of NIEHOFF-News. Some new developments
may appear somewhat insignificant at first
glance, but they certainly have something special, for
example the new opto-electronic traversing system
NBAT, which we will be demonstrating to you integrated
in a D631 bunching machine. This system, which
you can read about in more detail on page 6, enables
flawless stranded wires. This is the precondition for the
further processing of the strands at high speed and
without any risk of damaging them.
Another new development is the use of the RI series induction
annealers from the joint venture NBM for data
cable production. We will be showing you one of these
systems on the trade fair stand. You can read about the
advantages of this form of annealing for the production
of wires made from copper alloys in the report opposite.
The development of future-oriented technologies and
machines would not be possible without cooperation
with client companies. We would like to introduce you
E d i t o r i a l
Liebe Freunde des Hauses NIEHOFF,
Unternehmen möchten wir Ihnen in dieser
Ausgabe der NIEHOFF-News vorstellen. In
dem auf der gegenüberliegenden Seite abgedruckten
Interview spricht Herr Hentschel
von der Auto-Kabel Managementgesellschaft
über den Einsatz von Aluminiumkabeln
im Fahrzeugbau. Wegen der spezifischen
Werkstoffeigenschaften lassen sich
die für Kupferdraht bewährten Verfahren
nicht ohne weiteres auf Aluminium übertragen.
Das andere Unternehmen ist die in
Köln beheimatete nkt cables group, die die Tradition
der Felten & Guilleaume Kabelwerke fortführt
(Seite 7).
to two such companies in this issue of
NIEHOFF-News. In the interview printed on
the opposite page, Mr Hentschel of Auto-Kabel
Managementgesellschaft talks about the
use of aluminum cables in vehicle construction.
Due to the specific properties of the materials,
it is not possible to simply take the service-proven
processes which are appropriate
for copper and apply them to aluminum. The
other company is the Cologne-based nkt cables group,
which continues the traditions of the Felten &
Guilleaume Kabel werke (page 7). One of the remarkable
things about this company is that in spite of having
to relocate it has remained faithful to its home city
and demonstrated that it is also possible for firms in
the wire and cable industry to be competitive even
with operations in countries with relatively high wage
costs when applying efficient production lines.
Other noteworthy events are reported in the news
page, including the meeting of the members of the
„Intercable“ cable manufacturers association,
Moscow, which took place last December close to
NIEHOFF headquarters in Nuremberg and provided
delegates with the opportunity to gain a picture of
production at NIEHOFF (page 8).
Upstairs
We look forward to welcoming you to our trade fair
stand (10C18) in Düsseldorf and would also highly recommend
a visit to our neighbouring NIEHOFF-BÜHLER
NBM (10D18) stand.
I hope you enjoy reading this issue of NIEHOFF-News.
Drähte aus Kupferlegierungen:
Kupferwerkstoffe bilden eine der
größten Gruppen unter den industriell
genutzten Metallen. Nach
Aussagen des Internet-Lexikons
Wikipedia gibt es etwa 400 Kupferlegierungen,
die wegen ihrer
besonderen Kombination aus
technologischen Eigenschaften
auf vielen Engineering-Gebieten
gefragt sind. Zu den Anwendungsmöglichkeiten,
die an Bedeutung
gewinnen, gehören Erodierdraht
(EDM-Draht), Draht für
Batteriepins und Stifte für Micro-
Plugs sowie Draht für Siebe und
Filter.
Da viele Kupferlegierungen eine
niedrige Leitfähigkeit für Strom
und Wärme haben, lassen sich
Drähte aus Kupferlegierungen auf
den für Kupferdraht entwickelten
Widerstands-Durch -
Um die Vorteile des kontinuierlichen
Glühens auch für diese
Drähte nutzen zu können, hat
das Gemeinschaftsunternehmen
NIEHOFF-BÜHLER GmbH
NBM die induktiv-konduktiv
arbeitenden Durchlaufglühen
Typ RI entwickelt, die mit
Draht mit einer
sehr hohen Oberflächenqualität
und einem feinkörnigen,
Copper materials constitute one
of the major groups of industrial
metals. According to the
Wikipedia Internet encyclopedia
there are about 400 copper alloys
which are demanded by many
fields of engineering because of
their particular combination of
technological properties. Some
applications which gain importance
are electrical discharge machining
(EDM) wire, wire for battery
pins and pins for micro-plugs,
and wires for sieves and filters. Because
many copper alloys have
low electrical and heat conduction
characteristics, copper alloy wires
are difficult to anneal in continuous
resistance annealers designed
for copper. In order to use the advantages
of this technology for
these wires too, the joint venture
company NIEHOFF-BÜHLER GmbH
NBM has developed the RI continuous
inductive annealers which
can be combined with rod break-
Copper alloy wires:
fach bedienen bei deutlich verringerten
Betriebskosten, weil keine
Kohlebürsten, Schleifringe, Riemen
und Antriebe benötigt werden.
Die RI-Glühen eignen sich besonders
gut für Rund-, Flach- und Profildrähte
mit einfachem Querschnitt
aus Kupfer, Kupferlegierungen,
Edelmetallen und deren
Legierungen, Nickel und Nickel -
legierungen, und für Verbunddrähte
wie kupferbeschichtetes
Aluminium (Copper Clad Alu -
minum, CCA) und kupferbeschichteten
Stahl (CCS).
Auf der Fachmesse wire 2008 sind
die Versionen RI 170 und RI 250
dieser Induktionsglühen zu sehen
(Seiten 4 und 5).
RI annealers create
outstanding properties
down, intermediate and fine wire
drawing machines. The RI annealers
operate on the basis of the
(non-contacting) induction principle
and create wires with an excellent
surface quality and a fine
grained, homogeneous micro -
structure that gives it very good
processing and forming properties.
The RI annealers are easy to
operate at considerably reduced
operational costs because no carbon
brushes, sliprings, belts and
drives are needed.
The RI annealers are very well suited
for round, flat and profile wires
with a simple cross-section made
of copper, copper alloys, precious
metals and their alloys, nickel and
nickel alloys, and composite wires
like Copper Clad Aluminum (CCA)
or copper clad steel (CCS).
At the wire 2008 trade show the
RI 170 and RI 250 inductive annealer
versions are on display (s.
pages 4 and 5).

IM FOKUS
Interview mit Wolfgang Hentschel,
Auto-Kabel Managementgesellschaft mbH, Deutschland
Wolfgang Hentschel, einer der Geschäftsführer
der Auto-Kabel Managementgesellschaft mbH,
unterhielt sich mit Konrad Dengler aus der
NIEHOFF-News-Redaktion über Tendenzen auf
dem Automobilkabelsektor.
NIEHOFF-News: Herr Hentschel, Auto-Kabel ist
darauf spezialisiert, Leitungen und Kabelysteme
mit allen nötigen Komponenten für die Energieversorgung
in Kraftfahrzeugen zu entwickeln
und herzustellen. Vor welchen wesentlichen Herausforderungen
steht Ihr Haus?
Fahrzeug, also unserem Metier, verändern zur
Zeit zwei Faktoren die technische Ausprägung der
Produkte: Die weltweite Vorgabe, den CO 2-Ausstoß
zu reduzieren, und die rasante Entwicklung
der Kupferpreise in den letzten zwei Jahren. Die
Vorgabe kann man unter anderem durch Gewichtseinsparungen
im Fahrzeug erreichen. Wir
im Hause Auto-Kabel unterstützen diese Maßnahmen,
indem wir in unseren Leitungen Aluminium
statt Kupfer einsetzen.
sehr unterschiedliche Eigenschaften. Wie wirkt
sich das auf den Umstieg aus?
Wolfgang Hentschel: Der Werkstoff Aluminium
betrifft?
Interview with Wolfgang Hentschel,
Auto-Kabel Managementgesellschaft mbH, Germany
Firm customer
FOCUS
Wolfgang Hentschel, one of the directors of
Auto-Kabel Managementgesellschaft mbH, was
talking to Konrad Dengler from the NIEHOFF
News editing office about current trends in the
automotive cable industry.
NIEHOFF-News: Mr Hentschel, Auto-Kabel specializes
in the development and production of
wires and cable systems with all required components
for supplying power in automotive vehicles.
What key challenges does your company currently
face?
Wolfgang Hentschel: In principle, the task is to
identify customer requirements and develop and
supply innovative solutions. This requires that both
the organization and the employees involved in it
are focused on customer requirements. We manage
to achieve this with our sales and engineer centers
in proximity to our customers. This challenge is
also overlapped by our customers’ objective of cost
optimization at all times.
NIEHOFF News: What impact do these challenges
have on the wires produced by Auto-Kabel?
Wolfgang Hentschel: In terms of power supply
systems in the vehicle, which is our area of expertise,
two factors are currently leading to changes
in the technical design of the products, namely
the global requirement to reduce CO 2 emissions
and the drastic increase in the price of copper
over the last two years. One way of meeting this
requirement is to reduce weight within the vehicle.
At Auto-Kabel we make a contribution to
such measures by using aluminum in our wires instead
of copper. This substitution is also assisted
by the other influencing factor, with the aluminum
product also offering cost advantages as
well in many cases.
NIEHOFF News: Aluminum and copper have
very different properties to each other. What effect
does this have on substitution?
Wolfgang Hentschel: Aluminum as a material
does indeed present us with a whole new range
of challenges in terms of the design of the vehicle
wires and the process technology involved.
Auto-Kabel has therefore invested considerable
development work in process control for the
manufacture of aluminum wire in order to be
able to produce a stranded aluminum conductor
which is capable, in combination with the connection
elements and connection technologies
developed concurrently, of meeting the technical
requirements which have to be met by a complete
set of cables.
NIEHOFF News: Were there particularly tricky
tasks?
Wolfgang Hentschel: One major task was to produce
a reliable connection between the stranded
aluminum conductor and the brass contacts. In this
case, resistance to corrosion and mechanical
strength are particularly important. Auto-Kabel’s
solution was to use friction-welded connections.
NIEHOFF-News: How do you see the future development
of aluminum cables for power supply
systems in automotive vehicles?
Wolfgang Hentschel: In our view aluminum will
become the established material in vehicles within
the next few years, for the aforementioned reasons.
Products from our company are currently certified
for cross-sections of over 50 mm 2 . However,
we are working flat out on the further development
of our process technology to ensure that we
get certification for smaller cross-sections as well.
NIEHOFF News: That must certainly be one of
Auto-Kabel’s strengths...
Wolfgang Hentschel: But not just that. We have
rigorously worked on the further development of
our products and production processes and are
therefore the point of contact for innovative complete
solutions for the wiring sector. Thanks to a
combination of flexible and rigid wires made of
aluminum, we can produce wires and installation
routes which are perfectly tailored to the requirements
of our customers and which, thanks to new
installation and logistics concepts, also lead to savings
in both weight and costs. We believe that the
various aluminum wire technologies offered by
our company provide the basis for the future of
power distribution in vehicles.
NIEHOFF News: You will no doubt be hoping to
count on support from system suppliers such as
NIEHOFF.
Wolfgang Hentschel: Given our successful working
relationship to date we are certain that
NIEHOFF will provide us with support over coming
years in the development of new and optimized
production processes for manufacturing stranded
aluminum conductors, so that we in turn can meet
the objective of continuous optimization of products,
processes and costs.
NIEHOFF News: What needs to be done to ensure
that a company like Auto-Kabel remains market
leader?
Wolfgang Hentschel: Keeping a firm focus on
the customer at all times, in order to ensure that,
through networks and partnerships, we meet
every requirement made of us with style.
NIEHOFF News: Mr Hentschel, thank you for talking
to us. We would like to wish you and your company
continued success.
Doppelschlag-
Verlitzmaschine D 631
Die Doppelschlag-Verlitzmaschine D 631 ist
mit einem völlig neuen optoelektronischen
Automatikverlegesystem ausgerüstet,
das mit zwei Laser-Sensoren arbeitet. Die
stufenlos einstellbare Wickelkraft wird über die
gesamte Spulenfüllung mittels Kraftmessdose
in engen Grenzen geregelt. Da die Spulen perfekt
bespult werden, können die Litzen auch
bei sehr hohen Geschwindigkeiten schlingenfrei
und ohne Beschädigung abgezogen werden.
Zu den Besonderheiten der in fünf Größen
gebauten Maschinen der D-Reihe gehören die
Einbügelkonstruktion, die die Antriebsenergie
und die Geräuschemission erheblich reduziert,
und die berührungslose Übertragung der Maschinendaten
innerhalb der Maschine, was den
Wartungsaufwand deutlich senkt. Die D 631
nimmt Spulen mit einem maximalen Flanschdurchmesser
von 630 mm auf. Sie ist für einen
Litzenquerschnitt von 0,09 bis 6,00 mm 2 vorgesehen,
die Schlaglänge kann stufenlos von 6 bis
100 mm geregelt werden, die maximale Geschwindigkeit
beträgt 6.500 Schläge/min.
Hochgeschwindigkeits-
Umspulmaschine DSA
Die Hochgeschwindigkeits-Umspulmaschine
DSA „Niehoff System Hacoba“ mit CS
630-Spulabläufen für Mehrdrahtbündel
trägt durch ihre hohe Spulqualität erheblich
dazu bei, dass die Hochgeschwindigkeits-
Flechtmaschinen der BMV-Reihe ihre volle Produktivität
entfalten können. Die ausgestellte 4spindlige
automatische Umspulanlage mit einem
CS 630-Spulenablauf demonstiert das Umspulen
von einem Spulenablauf auf eine Spulspindel.
Unterschiedliche Anlagenkonfigurationen
erlauben eine effektive Auslastung der diesem
Prozess vorgelagerten Mehrdrahtziehtechnik.
So kann das Drahtbündel von einem CS 630
Spulenablauf auch auf zwei Spulspindeln aufgefacht
werden.
Doppelschlag-
Paarverseilmaschine DSI 631
Vorgeführt wird eine Doppelschlag-Verseilmaschine
DSI 631 mit Rückdrehablauf ARD
630 D und Längsbandablauf ALB. Die Besonderheiten
der Doppelschlag-Verlitz -
maschinen der D-Reihe wurden bei der Konstruktion
der Paar- und Viererverseilmaschinen
berücksichtigt und an das Verseilen isolierter
Leiter angepasst.
mm. Die Schlaglänge kann stufenlos von 8 bis
180 mm innerhalb eines sehr schmalen Toleranzfeldes
geregelt werden. Die Schlaglängenkonstanz
beträgt < ± 0,5% der effektiven
Schlaglänge. Die DSI-Maschinen können mit anderen
Systemen kombiniert werden, um alle
Arten von Daten- und Spezialkabeln einschließlich
LAN-Kabeln aller Kategorien – auch der
künftigen – mit höchster Präzision herzustellen.
Hochgeschwindigkeits-
Flechtmaschine BMV 24 mit
BAS 800-Auf- und Abspul-Einheit
Die 12-, 16- und 24-spuligen Hochgeschwindigkeits-Flechtmaschinen
der BMV-Reihe
eignen sich für die Verarbeitung von blankem
oder beschichtetem Kupferdraht, Aluminiumdraht
und Draht aus nicht rostendem Stahl mit
einem Durchmesser von 0,05 mm bis 0,3 mm sowie
von Garn und Fasern aus Kunststoff. Zu den
Besonderheiten gehören die stufenlose elektronische
Einstellung der Flechtgeschwindigkeit
und Flechtsteigung sowie ein automatisches
Zentralschmiersystem. Auf Wunsch kann
DSI 631 DSA MMH 50 / RM 121
Folie unter dem Geflecht oder ein Bandwickler
zum Umwickeln des geflochtenen Kabels mit
einer Metallfolie oder einem Textilband integriert
werden. Eine weitere Option ist ein Leerspulenerkennungssystem,
das die Maschine automatisch
stoppt, bevor eine Flechtspule entleert
ist, und die auf der Flechtspule verbleibenden
Drahtreste minimal hält. In der Standardversion
sind die Auf- und Abwickler für
Spulen mit einem Flanschdurchmesser von maximal
800 mm platzsparend unter dem Maschinentisch
installiert, für größere Spulen können
separat angetriebene Auf- und Abwickler installiert
werden.
Die BMV-Flechtmaschinen lassen sich zur Fertigung
von Daten-, Steuer- und Koaxialkabeln,
Hohlgeflechten für Batterie kabel und Litzengeflechten
einsetzen. Weitere Anwendungsmöglichkeiten
liegen in der mechanischen Verstärkung
von Druckschläuchen und der Produktion
von medizinischen Kathetern.
BOOTH
At the wire 2008 leading trade show in Düsseldorf, Germany (March 31 – April 4, 2008)
Maschinenfabrik Niehoff will display the production systems described below.
Among the innovations there will be a completely new annealing and preheating technology
for the inline production of data and telephone wires and a completely
new optoelectronic traversing system for double twist bunching machines.
MT 200 / RI 170 data and
telephone wire drawing line
The MT 200 data and telephone wire
drawing machine with integrated RI 170
continuous inductive annealer works
with an innovative annealing and preheating
technology, which derived from the proven
inductive annealers of the joint venture company
NIEHOFF-BÜHLER GmbH NBM. The simple
and contactless annealing principle generates
a high wire surface quality, while a
considerable reduction of the operational
costs is achieved by the omission of carbon
brushes. Optionally a calibration draft is
available which guarantees close tolerances
of the wire properties. The non-contacting
temperature measuring system controls the
wire temperature between annealer and extruder.
Via dancer control the line can be
combined and synchronized with all existing
types of extruder.
MMH 50 / RM 121
multiwire drawing line
The MMH 50 multiwire drawing machine
with integrated continuous annealer
RM 121 for fine wires has been optimized
for the production of finest multiwire bundles
with single wire diameters of up to 0.05
mm. The well-established multiwire drawing
machines of the MMH-series are capable of
drawing up to 48 wires which surpass the
strictest specifications and processing requirements.
In addition to multiwire drawing
machines for copper wire, NIEHOFF offers
8 and 16-wire drawing machines for aluminum
and aluminum alloy wires. The corresponding
continuous annealers have individual
drives. Therefore the rotational speed of
each contact pulley can be optimally
matched to different wire speeds. Moreover
a high wire surface quality as well as an extended
service life of the contact pulleys are
achieved.
D 631 double twist bunching
machine
The D 631 double twist bunching machine
equipped with a completely new
optoelectronic traversing system works
with two laser sensors. The winding force is
adjustable and controlled within tight limits
across the entire spool filling by means
of a load cell. As the spools are filled perfectly,
the strands can be paid off tanglefree
and without wire damages even at
very high speeds. The special features of
the double twist bunching machines of the
D-series, built in five different sizes, include
the one bow design which significantly reduces
both drive energy requirements and
noise emissions, and the contactless transfer
of machine data within the machine
which greatly lowers maintenance requirements.
The D 631 machine takes up spools
with a maximum flange diameter of 630
mm. It is designed for strands with a cross
section of 0.09 to 6.00 mm 2 , the lay length
can be freely adjusted from 6 to 100 mm
with a maximum of 6,500 twists/minute.
High speed rewinding machine
DSA
The high speed rewinding machine DSA
„NIEHOFF System Hacoba“ with CS 630
spool pay-offs for multiwire bundles
plays a key role in enabling the BMV series
high speed braiding machines to unfold
their full potential. The automatic rewinding
line, on display with 4 spindles and one
CS 630 spool pay-off, demonstrates the wire
rewinding from a spool pay-off onto a
spooling spindle. Various line configurations
allow the efficient utilization of the
upstream multiwire drawing system. The
wire bundle can be split to two spooling
spindles from a CS 630 spool pay-off.
Double twist stranding machine
DSI 631
On display will be a double twist stranding
machine DSI 631 with back twist pay-off
ARD 630 D and longitudinal tape pay-off
ALB 600. The characteristics of the double
twist bunching machines were incorporated
in the design of the stranders for pairs and
quads, which were also adapted to the requirements
of stranding insulated conductors.
The double twist stranders in the DSI series
are designed to combine insulated conductors
to pairs or quads and to strand conductor
pairs into LAN cables and other special
cables, either with or without back twist.
Depending on the respective machine version
up to three films can be applied. The DSI
631 is used for a wide conductor cross-section
range and a maximum strand diameter of 8
mm, while the DSI 1001 is built for a maximum
strand diameter of 15 mm. The lay
length can be freely adjusted from 8 to 180
mm with a very narrow tolerance band. The
lay length consistency is < ± 0.5% of the effective
lay length. The DSI machines can be
combined with other systems to manufacture
all types of data cables and special cables, including
LAN cables in all categories (including
the future ones) with utmost precision.
24-carrier high speed braiding
machine BMV 24 with BAS 800
take-up and pay-off unit
The high speed braiding machines of
the BMV series designed for 12, 16 or 24
spools are suitable for processing bare or
coated copper wire, aluminium wire and
stainless steel wire with a diameter of 0.05
to 0.3 mm and additionally for plastic fibres
and yarns. The machines feature an infinitely
variable electronic control of the line
speed and braiding pitch and an automatic
central lubrication system. Upon customer
request, a longitudinal tape inlet for the ap-
D 631 BMV
plication of a film below the braid can be integrated.
Optionally the integration of a
central taping device covering the braided
cable with metallic film or fabric tape is possible.
A further option is the empty bobbin
detection system for automatic machine
stop in time, before the bobbin is completely
empty. This system minimizes the wire
scrap on the braiding bobbin. The standard
version contains the space saving installation
of take-ups and pay-offs for spools with
a flange diameter of up to 800 mm below
the machine. For the use of larger spools the
machines can be equipped with take-ups
and pay-offs with independent drives. The
production range of braiding machines includes
the manufacture of data, control and
coaxial cables as well as hollow braids for
battery cables and stranded braids. The mechanical
reinforcement of flexible pressure
tubing and the production of medical
catheters are further special applications of
the braiding machines.
The joint venture company NIEHOFF-BÜH-
LER GmbH NBM will exhibit the inductive
continuous annealer RI 250 at their own
booth (booth 10D18) next to the NIEHOFFstand.
The line is designed for the production
wires in the range from 0.8 mm to 2.2 mm.
The RI annealers built in several sizes are
designed for round, flat and profile wires
made of metals with low electrical and
thermal conductivity like brass, bronze,
German silver, nickel and nickel alloys as
well as for wires for heating conductors, resistance
and compound wires. The induced
current heats the wire and produces a fine
homogeneous structure providing good
processing and reforming properties
Litzen fehlerfrei
aufspulen
6
Das neue optoelektronische Verlegesystem NBAT
Die Maschinenfabrik NIEHOFF hat für Verlitzmaschinen ein
auto matisch arbeitendes opto elektronisches Verlegesystem
entwickelt. Es trägt die Bezeichnung NBAT (NIEHOFF Bunching
Automatic Traverse).
Die Aufspul-Problematik
Beim Aufspulen von Litzen ist der Bereich
nahe dem Spulenflansch kritisch, wo die
Verlegerichtung sich ändert. Sind die Umkehrpunkte
der Verlegevorrichtung ungenau
eingestellt, besteht die Gefahr,
dass Litzenwindungen sich aufeinander
legen oder Freiräume bilden und schließlich
ineinander rutschen und sich verklemmen.
Beim Abspulen werden diese
Bereiche der Litze ruckartig belastet, wobei
die Drähte übermäßig gedehnt werden
oder gar reißen können.
Die NIEHOFF-Lösung
Das in der Praxis bereits erprobte Verlegesystem
NBAT gewährt eine gleichmäßige
Anordnung der Litzenwindungen. Das
NBAT besteht aus einer eigenständigen
Elektronikeinheit und zwei am Verlegeschaft
angeordneten Lasersensoren. Das
System übernimmt zwei wesentliche
Funktionen und entlastet damit den
Maschinenbediener von Einstellarbeiten
Faultless
strand take-up
Maschinenfabrik NIEHOFF has developed an automatic
opto-electronic traversing system entitled NBAT (NIEHOFF
Bunching Automatic Traverse) for its bunching machines.
The take-up problems
When strands are being taken up on spools,
the area close to the flange, where the traversing
direction changes, is critical. If the
turning points on the traversing unit are not
precisely set there is a potential of strand
loops overlaying each other or of voids being
created between them, causing them to
slide onto each other and tangle. This lay results
in poor and rough payout strand during
the next operation causing wire overstretching
and possible wire breaks.
The NIEHOFF solution
The traversing system NBAT, which has already
been successfully tested in the field,
guarantees that the strands are wound in a
uniform pattern. The NBAT comprises a separate
electronic unit and two laser sensors
located at the traversing pulley. The system
performs two essential functions and thereby
eliminates the need for the machine op-
The new opto-electronic
traversing system NBAT
erator to set up the machine again whenever
a new spool is loaded or whenever
the traversing settings are readjusted during
spool filling:
a) The system automatically detects the
flanges of the spool at the first traversing
stroke and continuously adjusts the
traversing turning points during the
spool filling operation.
b) The system continuously scans the
winding surface. Whenever it detects
any “hills“ and “valleys“, it sends control
commands to the step motor of the
traversing unit to ensure that they are
corrected out immediately for a uniform
and smooth lay.
The NBAT offers reliable service at all
bunching and traversing speeds. It makes
the winding quality of a spool no longer
dependent on the technical skill of the
machine operator and his continuous
presence at the machine.

The project attracted considerable interest,
not least because nkt cables is remaining
faithful to the richly historic city
of Cologne and is only moving a few kilometers
from the site which has been its
Ende Februar 2008 ging NIEHOFF-
Mitarbeiter Gunter Stegner (63) in
Pension. Er begann sein Berufsleben
nach Abschluss eines Maschinenbaustudiums
im Jahr 1971 bei einem
Gunter Stegner retires
At the end of February 2008, NIEHOFF
employee Gunter Stegner (63) retired.
He started his career with a top-name
manufacturer of forming machinery in
1971 after completing a degree in mechanical
engineering and moved to
NIEHOFF in Schwabach in the early 1980s
to join the company’s internal sales department.
Between 1984 and 1986, Stegner
was responsible for preparing the
Herborn steel wire drawing machine factory,
which still belonged to NIEHOFF at
two companies in the Nuremberg area.
NIEHOFF contributed to the symposium
with two presentations about the „Latest
developments in multiwire drawing
of copper, nickel plated copper and
bimetallic Cu-Al wires and a new generation
of double twist bunching machines“
and „Modern galvanic electroplating
lines for tin, silver and nickel
coatings on wire“.
The tour program offered the one hundred
or more delegates to the „Intercable
Meetings“ the opportunity to get
to know NIEHOFF headquarters in
Schwabach – where production, assembly
and testing facilities are located –
and the Leoni AG wire and cable plant
in Roth.
The „Intercable“ association currently
has 64 members from 20 different
countries. The next meeting of members
is scheduled for June 2008 in Bulgaria,
with the focal theme being
„Power cables 10 – 500 kV, technological
equipment, production materials
and measuring technologies“.
NIEHOFF brochures: Completely new and in
NIEHOFF has continuously expanded
and modified its product portfolio
over recent years. In order to
be able to present its range of
products and services in an appropriate
form, all information material
has recently been revised and, in the process,
updated and standardized. The completely redesigned
brochures, available in German, English
and Russian, will be published at wire 2008 trade
fair for the first time.
the time, for successful integration
in a new parent company. This was
followed by field service in Germanspeaking
countries and, starting in
1990, additional responsibility for
the markets in Russia and neighbouring
countries. Gunter Stegner
made a major contribution to establishing
NIEHOFF as a highly familiar
and reputable name in Germanspeaking
countries and in Russia and
other countries of the former Soviet
Union. Stegner’s successor for German-speaking
countries, including
Hungary and Slovenia, is Stefan
Gorgels, who has been working for
NIEHOFF for more than 3 years and is
a specialist in cable production machinery;
Stegner’s responsibilities in
Russia shall be taken over by Peter
Thäsler, director of the „Branch of
