VORWORT
1990 forderte der US-Zeichner Scott
McCloud seinen Kollegen Stephen
Bissette heraus, innerhalb von 24
Stunden einen eigenständigen
24-seitigen Comic zu entwickeln. Ziel
Herausforderung hunderte, tausende
Künstler:innen auf der ganzen Welt
gestellt.
Die Regeln für einen 24-Stunden-Comic-
Marathon sind simpel: Die Zeichner:innen
dürfen nichts vorbereiten,
das Thema wird erst kurz vor Beginn
bekanntgegeben bzw. ausgelost. Texte,
Entwürfe, Szenarios, Zeichnungen,
Reinzeichnungen, Farben und alles, was
sonst zu einem Comic gehört, muss
innerhalb von 24 Stunden entstehen.
Nachbearbeitungen sind nicht erlaubt.
Ob man 24 Stunden lang durchzeichnet,
lieber kleine Pausen einplant oder aber
den Comic schnell fertigzeichnet, um die
verbleibende Zeit für Verfeinerungen
zu nutzen … das entscheidet jede und
In 1990, U.S. cartoonist Scott McCloud
challenged fellow cartoonist Stephen
Bissette to develop a stand-alone
24-page comic in 24 hours. The goal
was to compress all the work that
goes into a month-long comic project
into one day. Since then, hundreds of
thousands of artists around the world
have taken up the same gauntlet.
The rules for a 24-hour comic marathon
are simple: artists cannot do any
preparatory work before the event and
the theme of the comic to be created is
revealed only at the start of the event
itself. Drafts, text, drawings, colouring,
and final artwork (in short everything
comprising a completed comic) must be
created within those 24 hours. Editing
after the fact is not allowed. Whether
you draw for the entire 24 hours, take
small breaks during the marathon, or
finish the comic quickly and use the
remaining time to refine your work is all
up to you. The goal is to finish the comic
and the journey is to have fun along the
way. "A mixture of jazz and endurance
sport" is how Peter Auge Lorenz,
exhausting, becomes a recurring event for many of the artists
who undertake it.
Exhibition visitors read comics from the first edition of the event.
Berlin has already seen many 24-hour comic events, mostly
small ones self-organized by artists. Neurotitan gallery has
also hosted such comic marathons in the past. The Literary
Colloquium Berlin invited the comics scene to its Villa am
Wannsee for the first time in 2019 — an initiative of journalist
Augusto Paim, who worked at the LCB at the time. Since
then, the event has taken place every year at the beginning
of autumn, with Augusto beating a gong on an hourly basis
to inspire and motivate participants and remind them of the
passing time.
In this exhibition at the neurotitan gallery in Haus Schwarzenberg
- an initiative of the artist Noémie Fantôme, we
exhibited the original comic pages precisely as they were
created during the four editions of "24-Hour Comic at
40 Comics ausgestellt. Doch das war
nur eine Auswahl aus den über 100
Comics, die während der vier Ausgaben
des »24-Stunden-Comics am Wannsee«
entstanden sind. Die teilnehmenden
Künstler:innen stammten aus unterschiedlichen
Ecken Deutschlands, aber
auch aus Japan, Italien, der Schweiz,
Österreich, Taiwan, Frankreich und
anderen Ländern. Einige Künstler:innen
hatten digital gearbeitet, an mehreren
Ausgaben teilgenommen (jede:r durfte
Wannsee". Artists were each allowed
to choose four pages from their story
(more if the comic was smaller than A4
format). The comics in their entirety
could be accessed via QR code and read
online while visiting the gallery. These
QR codes can also be found in this
brochure.
Artwork from over forty comics was on
display at the gallery, but even these
represent only a selection from the
more than 100 comics that have been
created over the last four editions of
the "24-Hour Comics at Wannsee"
event. Participating artists came from
across Germany, as well as internationally
from Japan, Italy, Switzerland,
Austria, Taiwan, France and beyond.
Some artists worked digitally, some
participated in more than one event (in
this case they were allowed to choose
only one comic), and some were not yet
satisfied enough with their comics to
exhibit them. All the comics, however,
that have been created over the last
four years of the event can be found on
LCB‘s website at lcb.de/skizzenblog.
Often, comics created during a 24-hour
comic marathon are at the heart of a
more ambitious project whose inception
just needed that one last push. For this
reason the exhibition also featured a
reading corner with comics that were
Anstoß gewartet hat. Deshalb gab es in
dieser Ausstellung auch eine Leseecke
mit Ansichtsexemplaren jener Comics,
die im Nachhinein angefertigt, ausgearbeitet
und veröffentlicht wurden – sei
es als Buch, Heft, Zine oder sonstige
Publikation. Viele dieser Werke können
auch im neurotitan Laden erworben
werden.
Wir zeigten in der Galerie auch
mehrere Fotos von den vielen schönen
gemeinsamen Momenten. Und Videos.
Und Erinnerungsstücke aus den vier
Ausgaben. Und noch mehr!
An dieser Stelle möchten wir, Noémie
und Augusto, uns vielmals bei den
engagierten Künstler:innen bedanken,
die uns bei der Idee der Ausstellung
und ihrer Umsetzung unterstützt haben.
Und für ihre Teilnahme an den vier
Ausgaben. Wir freuen uns schon auf die
fünfte!
subsequently edited after the event,
expanded, and/or published – whether
as a book, booklet, zine, or other publication.
Many of these works can still be
purchased in the neurotitan store.
Also on exhibit were photographs
of participants and many beautiful
moments experienced during the events.
And videos. And memorabilia from the
four issues. And more!
At this point, we, Noémie and Augusto,
would like to give our heartfelt thanks
to all the dedicated artists who helped
us with the idea of the exhibition and its
realisation, as well as for their participation
in all four editions of the event.
We are already looking forward to the
fifth!
„MATE“ – 12. bis 13. Oktober 2019 "MATE" – October 12 - 13, 2019
Peter Auge Lorenz (Comicbibliothek Renate), Annette
Köhn (Jaja Verlag) und Alex Chauvel (Éditions Polystyrène)
zusammensetzte.
Zudem fanden
For the first edition of the "24-Hour Comics at Wannsee"
an organisation committee was formed, comprising Peter
Auge Lorenz (Comicbibliothek Renate), Annette Köhn (Jaja
Verlag) and Alex Chauvel (Éditions Polystyrène), three artists
who share a keen enthusiasm for comic marathons. When
journalist Augusto Paim—then a staff member at the Literary
Colloquium Berlin and the event‘s initiator— suggested
organizing a 24-hour comic event at Wannsee, their eyes lit up
and a smile spread across all their faces.
Thanks to the experience of the organization committee, the
first edition was a great success. Everything was planned
down to the last detail and Alex Chauvel’s illustration for the
event was likely the inspirational force behind many of the
artists who joined the event.
20 Mate Mate 21
im Veranstaltungssaal kurze Podiumsgespräche mit einigen
Teilnehmenden statt, darunter der Comiczeichner Marcello
Quintanilha.
Franke.
On Saturday October 12, 2019 at
noon, the start-time for the marathon,
there were over 35 participants at the
ready when the theme "Mate" was
announced. Referring to "Chimarrão",
'mate' tea is consumed in South
America with the help of a drinking
tube from its calabash, an example of
which was provided by Augusto from
his office. Thanks to its high caffeine
content, Chimarrão helps people stay
awake. In South America, it is a drink
traditionally enjoyed in the company of
others, making it the perfect fit for the
24-hour comic artist all-night drawing
marathon.
Am Ende der Veranstaltung, am Mittag des 13. Oktober,
On that same Saturday evening the LCB opened its doors for
a few hours to the public for a collective studio visit, where
LCB guests were allowed to look over the shoulders of the
participating artists at work. In addition, the event hall hosted
short panel discussions with various participants, including
Brazilian/Barcelona-based comic artist Marcello Quintanilha,
who at the time was also doing a residency at LCB and won an
award at the 2016 Angoulême Comics Festival for his graphic
novel "Tungstênio". (He would subsequently win the festival‘s
main prize in 2022 for "Escuta, Formosa Márcia" published
in German by Reprodukt). Talks on stage were moderated
by journalist Lilian Pithan. A book table provided by Comic
Library Renate and wonderfully supervised by comic artist
Luise Franke was the icing on the cake.
The event ended at noon on October 13, and all the comics
remained at the LCB to be scanned and published on the
LCB website (lcb.de/skizzenblog) in the weeks to follow. A
selection of twelve comics, plus photos, a poster, and other
texts was published the following year under the title "MATE"
by Jaja Verlag, edited by Augusto Paim and Annette Köhn.

36 Limit Limit 37
„LIMIT“ – 10. bis 11. Oktober 2020
"LIMIT" – October 10 - 11, 2020
The first edition of the event was such a great success that
everyone looked forward with great anticipation to the
sequel. To add to the excitement, we asked Berlin-based comic
artist Mawil to create a motif image for 2020, using Alex
Chauvel‘s wave image from the previous year as inspiration.
He mastered it beautifully with his illustration of the LCB
Villa floating in the wind amidst waves of comic-book pages,
capturing the autumn mood characteristic of the "24-Hour
Comic at Wannsee" event. An additional save-the-date
postcard with his graphic was sent out, resulting in numerous
new applicants.
sogar zwei Aufenthaltsstipendien an zwei internationale
2020 was also the first year of the
corona pandemic.
The second edition of the event was
meant to have taken place in October
2020, only to be cancelled days beforehand
due to one of the several of the
lockdowns to come.
Everything was ready to go—the gong
was set up, the participants ready, the
"MATE" book fresh from the printers
was waiting to be presented on the
evening of the marathon—LCB had
even awarded residency grants to two
international comic artists (already at
Wannsee to participate in the event),
but the marathon was not to be.
Das Wedding-Team bei der Arbeit im Wohnzimmer.
A few artists refused to see this as an
obstacle. Both Noémie Fantôme and
Zora Sauerteig, who had registered to
participate in the now-canceled event,
gathered a small group of artists and
organized a small-scale comic marathon
for the scheduled date in their shared
apartment in Berlin-Wedding. Noémie,
Zora, Nicola Lonzi, alea rodriguez and
Franz Himmighofen abided by all the
corona-compliance rules, including
social distancing and necessary hygiene
precautions, creating comics with
the theme "limit". "Unforgettable"
and "incorrect" served as secondary
themes for the challenge. As a token of
our gratitude, we have also published
the comics created there on lcb.de/
„ZU ENG“ – 09. bis 10. Oktober 2021
"TOO CLOSE" – 09 - 10 October 2021
doch stattfinden. Wegen der Hygienemaßnahmen
kam die Entscheidung,
den »24-Stunden-Comic am Wannsee«
auf verschiedene Örtlichkeiten in
Berlin zu verteilen. Wieder haben über
35 Zeichner:innen teilgenommen,
diesmal wurden sie aber in kleine
Gruppen getrennt: Es gab eine Gruppe
am Wannsee, dann noch zwei in
Berlin-Neukölln, eine in Berlin-Mitte
und wieder eine Gruppe in Zoras und
Noémis WG in Berlin-Wedding. Es gab
auch Einzelkämpfer:innen, die allein von
zu Hause daran teilgenommen haben
(sogar aus Wien).
2021, the second year of the Corona
pandemic, began with little hope of the
"24-hour comic at Wannsee" being able
to take place. And indeed, the event had
to be postponed from April to October.
Fortunately by October the pandemic
conditions lessened to an extent that
the event could in fact happen, albeit
with many limitations. Due to social
distancing measures, 2021’s "24-Hour
Comic at Wannsee" took place at
various different locations throughout
Berlin. Once again over 35 artists participated,
but this time they were split
into smaller groups: one group gathered
at Wannsee, two in Berlin-Neukölln, one
in Berlin-Mitte and one group met once
again at Zora‘s and Noémie‘s shared
apartment in Berlin-Wedding. Additional
artists participated independently
from their homes from places as far
away as Vienna.
Diese Ausgabe konnte nur dank der
Unterstützung mehrerer Partner:innen
wieder ein Erfolg sein. Die kleinen
Gruppen haben sich selbstorganisiert
und blieben digital stets in Verbindung
miteinander. Am Samstagabend
wurde eine digitale Veranstaltung vom
Wannsee aus gestreamt, bei der die
Comicforscherin Marie Schröer als
Moderatorin per Video mit den unterschiedlichen
Gruppen ins Gespräch
kam und auch Zeichner:innen auf der
Bühne vom LCB interviewte, unter
denen die taiwanische Comiczeichnerin
Weng Yu-Hung aka HOM, damalige
LCB-Stipendiatin. Nach der Abendveranstaltung
ist der Gongspieler und Organisator
Augusto Paim durch die Berliner
Nacht gewandert, um die anderen
Gruppen zu besuchen. Ins LCB ist er erst
am Sonntagmorgen nach der kollektiven
Bewunderung des Sonnenaufgangs
auf der Terrasse der Wedding-Gruppe
zurückgekommen.
The success of this edition was due
largely to the support of several
partners. The smaller groups organized
themselves independently and kept in
touch with the other groups digitally.
On Saturday evening, a main event
was live-streamed from Wannsee:
comics researcher and moderator
Marie Schröer conversed with the
different satellite groups via video and
interviewed cartoonists on the LCB
stage, including Taiwanese comics artist
Weng Yu-Hung aka HOM, who was a
LCB scholarship recipient at the time.
Following the evening’s panels at LCB,
gong-beater and organizer Augusto
Paim wandered through the Berlin night
to visit the different satellite groups,
returning to LCB on Sunday morning
after admiring the sunrise from the
terrace of the Wedding group’s location.
Als sicher war, dass der »24-Stunden-
Comic am Wannsee« 2021 stattfinden
würde, haben wir Mawil beauftragt,
sein Motivbild vom Vorjahr passend zur
neuen Situation zu aktualisieren. Mawils
Kreativität kennt keine Grenzen, und er
konnte die Verteilung in kleine Gruppen
wegen der Pandemie in einer apokalyptischen
zugleich lustigen Zeichnung
darstellen. Als hätte er schon im Voraus
gewusst, dass 2021 das ausgeloste, für
den gemeinsamen Inspirationsanstoß
Thema „zu eng“ sein würde.
Da wir den »24-Stunden-Comic am
Wannsee« diesmal in verschiedenen
Gruppen und ohne Publikum veranstalten
mussten, war es sehr wichtig,
die sozialen Netzwerke zu nutzen und
viel zu posten. Für die Zusammenfindung
haben die Hashtags unten eine
Rolle gespielt!
#24hcomic #comicamwannsee
Upon receiving confirmation that the
2021“24-Hour Comic at Wannsee" could
in fact take place, we asked Mawil to
update his 2020 drawing, adapting it
to suit the Covid-19 safety measures
put in place for the event. Mawil‘s
creativity knows no bounds: he depicted
the pandemic-segregated groups in a
humorous if also apocalyptic illustration,
almost as if he had known in advance
that the 2021 theme drawn for all
participants would be "zu eng" (German
for "too close" or "too narrow").
Since the 2021 edition of "24-hour comic
at Wannsee" was made of separated
groups, there would be no opportunity
for a live audience. As a result social
networking and social media posts
became a crucial aspect of the event,
all of which were to be found under the
hashtags:
„MEIN KINDERGARTEN“
– 8. bis 9. Oktober 2022
© LCB
2022 haben wir die Zeichnerin Lucie
Langston beauftragt, das Motivbild
der Veranstaltung zu entwickeln. Lucie
hatte 2021 zum ersten Mal daran
teilgenommen, und die Umstände jener
Ausgabe haben ihren Schaffensprozess
deutlich beeinflusst: Auf dem Bild sieht
man die LCB-Villa unter einem Gewitter,
Sprechblasen deuten auf Teilnehmende
hin, die sich mit der Herausforderung,
zum Zeichnen wach zu bleiben, nicht
klar kommen – und sich im nächsten
Jahr trotzdem wieder dafür zu
bewerben.
In 2022, we commissioned illustrator
Lucie Langston to develop the motif
image for the event. Lucie had participated
for the first time in 2021, and
the circumstances of her participation
in 2021 clearly influenced her creative
process: the image of the LCB Villa
portrayed in a distant thunderstorm,
and the artists ensconced in their own
speech bubbles, all struggling with the
task of drawing all-night long; and then
re-applying to participate in the event
again.
"MY KINDERGARTEN" –
October 8 - 9, 2022
Tired but satisfied: the artists toast the end of the 2022 event.
Abgesehen von der fürchterlichen
Stimmung auf diesem Bild fand die
Ausgabe 2022 ohne jeglichen Schrecken
statt. Eigentlich sah sie genauso aus
wie die erste. Wir konnten 30 Zeichner:innen
am Wannsee unterbringen,
und die 24 Stunden hindurch mit
Verpflegung versorgen. Denjenigen, die
kleine Pausen machen wollten, boten
wir einen Raum mit Isomatten und
Decken. Bei gutem Wetter waren die
Terrasse und der Garten mit Blick auf
den See wunderbare Erholungsräume.
Wieder haben die Teilnehmenden
Zahlen von 24 bis 0 gezeichnet, die eine
nach der anderen gezeigt wurden, um
den Zeitverlauf durch einen visuellen
Countdown darzustellen. Wieder ist der
Gong immer zur vollen Stunde ertönt,
um an den 24-Stunden-Rhythmus zu
erinnern.
Wieder haben wir am Samstagabend
die Türe des LCB geöffnet, um
dem Publikum einen kollektiven
Atelierbesuch zu ermöglichen. Und der
Organisator Augusto Paim ist selbst aus
Brasilien eingeflogen, wo er mittlerweile
wieder wohnt, um den ganzen Comic-
Marathon zu betreuen und sogar die
Podiumsgespräche der Abendveranstaltung
auf der Bühne zu führen. Dabei
hat er sich etwa mit dem Comiczeichner
Animo Chen aus Taiwan, damals LCB-
Stipendiat, unterhalten.
© Augusto Paim
Tafel mit den Zahlen nach Ende der 24
Stunden.
Board with all numbers after the 24 hours
were finished.
Despite the somber mood of this image,
the 2022 edition took place with nary a
scare. In fact, the event was very much
like the first edition—We were able to
once again accommodate 30 artists at
Wannsee and provide them with food
and beverages over the course of the
24 hours. Those who wanted to take
a break could retreat to a room with
sleeping mats and blankets. When the
weather was good, the terrace and the
garden overlooking the lake also served
as wonderful rest areas.
Once again, participants drew numbers
from 0 to 24, which they then illustrated
as a visual countdown of the passage
of time. Once again, the gong sounded
every hour on the hour to keep the
chronological rhythm alive.

Neues war diesmal, dass ein Team
vom ARTE die ersten Stunden des
»24-Stunden-Comics am Wannsee«
mitbegleitet hat. Die zweiminütige
Dokumentation dazu seht ihr in der
ARTE-Mediathek.
Ebenfalls neu war diesmal, dass sich
ein Team aus Lissabon aus der Ferne
angeschlossen hat. Dies ist Nicola Lonzi
zu verdanken, der in den zwei vorigen
Ausgaben in der Wedding-Gruppe
war, als er noch in Berlin lebte. 2022
hat er in Portugals Hauptstadt eine
Ausschreibung gepostet und eine
Gruppe begeisterter Zeichner:innen
gefunden. Alle – in Lissabon und am
Wannsee – haben ihre Comics zum
Thema „Mein Kindergarten“ gezeichnet.
Die Comics aus Lissabon sind auch unter
lcb.de/skizzenblog zu finden.
Again, the doors of the LCB were opened
Saturday evening to allow the public in
for a collective studio visit. Organizer
Augusto Paim even flew in from Brazil
(to where he has since relocated) to
oversee the entire comic marathon and
lead the evening’s panel discussions
from the LCB’s stage, including an
interview with comic artist Animo Chen
from Taiwan, an artist-in-residence at
LCB at the time.
In 2022 for the first time a team from
ARTE was present for the first few hours
of the "24-Hour Comic at Wannsee";
their two-minute video documentation
on the event can be found at the ARTE-
Online media center.
Also new in 2022 was a satellite team
joining from Lisbon, thanks to Nicola
Lonzi, who participated in 2020 and
2021 in the Berlin-Wedding group
before moving to Portugal. In 2022 he
posted a call for entries in Lisbon and
gathered a group of enthusiastic artists
there. Both the Berlin Wannsee and
Lisbon artists drew comics on the theme
"My Kindergarten", all of which can be
found at lcb.de/skizzenblog.

Ja, eine fünfte Ausgabe dieses
„konkurrenzlosen Wettkampfs“,
wie es im »MATE«-Buch von Jaja
beschrieben ist, gibt es schon. Der
»24-Stunden-Comic am Wannsee«
findet 2023 am Wochenende
des 7. und 8. Oktober statt. Die
Ausschreibung wurde im Sommer
auf den LCB-Kanälen bekanntgegeben.
Und das wunderschöne Motivbild
stammt diesmal von der Comiczeichnerin
Zora Sauerteig.
Wir freuen uns riesig!
Yes, there is a fifth edition of this
"competition-without-competing", as
it is described in Jaja‘s "MATE" book.
The 2023 edition of "24-Hour Comic at
Wannsee" takes place on the weekend
of October 7 and 8. The call for applications
appeared across LCB channels
this summer.
This year’s beautiful motif image is
brought to us by comic artist Zora
Sauerteig.
We’re really proud of it!
