AIRCRAFT DE-ICING
Aircraft de-icing – a task involving a high degree of responsibility and importance for aircraft safety – is
carried out at Munich Airport exclusively by EFM. Compliance with the relevant regulations combined with the
appropriate, recurrent training as well as careful operations ensure the safe and reliable execution of our task.
Our well-trained and conscientious employees have one of the world's most modern aircraft de-icing
fleets. It consists of 24 de-icing vehicles, which are all designed for one-man operations. As with our towing
tractors, third parties perform most of the maintenance and repair work on our vehicles. These suppliers
are either certified under the ISO 9001 standard or are periodically audited by us.
The De-icing Operations Manual (BHB) provides a process-driven description of the procedural steps.
Where appropriate the BHB is supplemented by procedural instructions, information materials and other documents.
The BHB is based on ISO 11076, the recommendations of the AEA (Association of European Airlines),
the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) ARP (Aerospace Recommended Practice) and the regulations of
the aircraft manufacturers. Requirements of individual airlines above and beyond these regulations can also
be fulfilled on request.
In addition to safety we also give high priority to the sparing use of aircraft de-icing fluids. Instead of automatically
spraying the entire aircraft, we target only the areas contaminated with ice or snow. We continually
study possibilities for even more efficient utilization of de-icing fluids with the intensive involvement of
our most experienced de-icing staff. However, compliance with the above-mentioned regulations and the
most exacting flight safety standards will always be the top priority, and will never be compromised in the
interest of environmental protection.
Remote de-icing
So-called remote de-icing is carried out directly before take-off with the engines running on remote areas at
the runway heads. The tower controllers direct the aircraft to one of the de-icing areas, where the head of the
de-icing crew (the team leader) coordinates the de-icing operation.
After completion of de-icing, a final check (with documentation) and the all-clear to the flight crew, the aircraft
can take off within a very short time thanks to the proximity to the runway. This minimizes the possibility
that the hold-over time for the de-icing fluid will be exceeded, necessitating a repeat de-icing operation.
Remote de-icing ensures safety, saves time, reduces costs, limits the quantity of de-icing fluid used and protects
the environment.
