Comparison of the Structures and Interdependencies
in the Slovak Economy in 2000 and 2005
0 Abstract
Mikulas Luptacik, Martin Labaj
The article deals with the comparison of the structures and interdependencies in the
Slovak economy in the year 2000 and 2005. The analysis is based on Open Static Leontief
model. This model allows us to analyze complex structural relations that are not visible
at the first glance. Using this model we computed production multipliers as well as
employment import and value added multipliers. Slovak input-output tables for the year
2005 are in constant prices 2000 that is quite unique even in the European context. This
allowed us to decompose the changes in import and employment into the several factors
and to distinguish between price and technology changes.
1 Introduction
“The competitiveness of the EU economy is not the result of merely aggregating individual
industries´ performance but the result of a complex network of relationships between
them.” (European Commission 2005, 33). Input-output analysis allows us to
analyze these complex relationships that are not visible at the first glance. Through
input-output analysis we can answer for example the questions like: „How many employees
worked in 2005 directly and indirectly for export in the Slovak republic?“ „How
many jobs are generated directly and indirectly by one unit of final consumption expenditures
by households?“ „What are the import requirements of export?“ „Is the labor
productivity of export oriented industries higher than the average productivity?“. In this
paper we tried to answer these questions.
The structure of the paper is as follows. Data required for analysis and methodology
used for computations are explained in the first part. Than we present some basic characteristics
of the Slovak economy. Standard multiplier analysis based on Leontief model
is made in the next part. We compared production, employment, value added and import
multipliers as well as the structure of the Slovak economy in 2000 and 2005. After that
we analyze the structural changes in import and employment requirements using structural
decomposition techniques explained in following section. The final section deals
with results obtained by structural decomposition and include some concluding remarks.
