Great Mountain Films in a Perfect Mountain Setting
The scenic valley of Tegernsee, with its lake nestled at the foot of picturesque mountains, will for the ninth
time host the annual Tegernsee International Mountain Film Festival in October 2011. This festival is supported
by the ‘Deutscher Alpenverein’ (German Alpine Club), ‘Bayerischer Rundfunk’ (Bavarian Broadcasting
Corporation) and ‘Tegernseer Tal Tourismus GmbH’.
The patron of the event is Dr. Heiner Geissler, former secretary for youth, family and health in Germany –
who has been an active alpinist for decades.
Since the festival’s premiere in 2003 the event has been attracting entries from around the world every
year. In 2010, nearly 6000 guests were able to enjoy the 75 films which were presented in six venues. The
baroque hall of the former monastery and castle, with its wonderful fresco on the ceiling, is a unique setting
for the films and especially for the festive award ceremony.
The Tegernsee Mountain Film Festival is a competitive international event, bringing the best films on
mountains and their spirit of adventure to the heart of the Bavarian Alps. The festival provides a forum for
filmmakers to exchange ideas and to experience the emotions of the audience „live“.
The Great Prize of the Town of Tegernsee is represented by a lovingly ornamented, rustic hiking stick and
includes a monetary prize of € 3,000. This stick has previously gone to director Philipp Stölzl who sent renowned
actors such as Benno Fürmann to the north face of Mt Eiger, to German mountain film maker Gerhard
Baur, who has also been invited to join the jury and to Austrian film maker Gerald Salmina who was
honoured in 2010 for his spectacular documentary on the ski descent from Mount St. Elias. Some of the
laureates of previous years will return to Tegernsee with their most recent productions.

The festival accepts films depicting any aspect of life in the mountains.
Thus the films reflect the wide range of today’s mountain film genre: It includes breathtaking alpine action,
of course, but also social, historical, ecological topics; and it reaches from a classic documentary to feature
and fiction film, to portraits of mountain landscapes as well as mountain people. The essential aspect is
that mountains or the encounter with mountains play a significant role in the film.
Entries are judged in the following categories:
n Mountain Experience – Alpinism, Mountain Sports, Adventure
n Mountain Nature – landscape and Environment
n Mountain Life – Culture and Science
n Extra: Water in the Mountains

The ‘Großer Preis der Stadt Tegernsee’ (€ 3000) will be awarded for the best film of the categories Mountain
Experience, Mountain Nature, Mountain Life. The prize by the "Deutscher Alpenverein" (German Alpine
Club) (€ 1.000) goes to the best film in the category "Mountain Experience". There will be three first prizes
(€ 1.000 each) in the categories Mountain Nature, Mountain Life and Extra: Water in the Mountains. The
Otto-Guggenbichler-Prize (€ 1.000), named after the founder of the festival, will be awarded for the best
film by a junior film maker (under 32 years of age).
