Der Master of Advanced Studies in Landschaftsarchitektur
(mas la) ist ein einjähriges, englischsprachiges
Vollzeitstudium für Architekten, Landschaftsarchitekten
und Absolventen verwandter Disziplinen.
Ein zentrales Thema des mas la Programms 2007/08
ist die kritische Auseinandersetzung mit Fragestellungen
der Nachhaltigkeit im Bereich grossmassstäblicher Entwurfsarbeit
in urbanen Landschaften. Die Studierenden sind
aufgefordert, globale wie auch lokale ökonomische und
soziologische Anforderungen zu erkennen und in
ihren Entwurf zu integrieren. Das Programm ist in zwei
Hauptbereiche aufgeteilt – ein Entwurfsstudio und
ein Theorieseminar. Die filmische Auseinandersetzung
mit Landschaft, als Analyse- und Repräsentationswerkzeug
ist in beide Bereiche gleichermassen integriert.
Der Einsatz aktueller Modellierungs- und Visualisierungstechniken
unterstützen den Entwurfsprozess.
Im Theorieseminar diskutieren die Teilnehmer anhand
von Vorlesungen und Texten Argumente nachhaltiger
Entwicklung der Landschaftsgestaltung. Diese Argumente
gilt es im Rahmen einer eigenen Theorie- und Projekt-
arbeit zu prüfen, so dass jeder Teilnehmer ein eigenes theoretisches
Argumentarium und Referenzsystem aufbauen
kann.
MAS LA 2005⁄06
Das mas la 2005/06 untersuchte die urbane Landschaft
zwischen den beiden Städten La-Chaux-de-Fonds und
Le Locle (Le Crêt-du-Locle). Die Studierenden wurden dazu
aufgefordert, einen «Plan Paysage» zu entwerfen,
der die Landschaft zu einem Agenten der Entwicklung
werden lässt. Durch Strukturierung und Gestaltung
soll die Landschaft die Urbanisierung lenken und vorhandenen
Qualitäten des Ortes stärken. Die Vermessung
der Landschaft mit Hilfe der Videokamera zu Beginn
des Entwurfsprozesses liessen die raumprägenden, ostsspezifischen
Spuren aufzeichnen. Darauf basierend und
nach detaillierter Recherche untersuchten die Studierenden
programmatische Zukunftsszenarien, die auf den
vorhandenen Qualitäten aufbauen. Im «Thesis Semester»
führten sie alle Erkenntnisse in einem Entwurfsprojekt
zusammen. Abschliessend stellten die Studierenden
im Rahmen einer «table ronde» ihre Visionen für die
urbane Landschaft von Le Crêt-du-Locle den Verantwortlichen
der unterschiedlichen Gemeinden und Behörden
vor. Die Vorschläge wurden diskutiert, vor Ort ausgestellt
und in die Konzeption eines internationalen ausgeschriebenen
Wettbewerbes für das Projektgebiet integriert.

The Master of Advanced Studies in Landscape Architecture
(mas la) is a one-year, full-time, English-language
program for architects, landscape architects and graduates
in related disciplines.
A central topic of the 2007/08 mas la program is the
critical study of sustainability issues with respect to
large-scale design work in urban landscapes. The students
are required to recognize global as well as local economic
and sociological requirements and integrate them
into their design work. The program is subdivided
into two main areas: a design studio and a theory seminar.
Students integrate the use of film as a tool for analysis
and representation through which to engage with landscape
in both of these areas. They use the latest modeling
and visualization technologies to support the design
process.
In the theory seminar, the participants discuss arguments
relating to the sustainable development of
landscape design on the basis of lectures and readings.
The point is for students to question these arguments
in the context of their own theory-based work and in their
projects, so they can each build up a theoretical line
of argument and reference system of their own.
MAS LA 2005⁄06
The 2005/06 mas la investigated the urban landscape between
the two cities of La-Chaux-de-Fonds and Le
Locle (Le Crêt-du-Locle). The students were assigned the
problem of designing a landscape plan that would
allow the landscape to be an agent of development. By
means of structuring and design, the landscape is to
steer urbanization and enhance the existing qualities of
the place. Surveying the landscape with the help of a
video camera at the beginning of the design process allowed
the students to record the traces that shape the
space and are specific to the site. Based on these findings
and subsequent to detailed research, the students explored
programmatic scenarios for the future that use the
existing qualities as a foundation. In the thesis semester,
they assembled their findings in a design project. Finally,
the students presented their visions for the urban landscape
of Le Crêt-du-Locle to the public officials of the
different municipalities and authorities in a panel
meeting. The proposals were discussed, exhibited on site
and integrated into the conception of an international
competition for the project area.
