Time for Remembrance
In the spring of last year, someone in our Knitting and
Stitching group at St. John the Baptist Church suggested
a project for us. Perhaps we could knit or crochet
poppies for display on Remembrance Sunday? We all
agreed that this would be a very worthwhile project. We
found several patterns which members of the group
worked very successfully in a variety of shades of red.
Before long we had over 80 poppies which were used
in a display to depict the musical, Oh, What a Lovely
War! In the September flower festival. The exhibit
caused much comment; several people asked for the
patterns and offered completed poppies to the collection
in church. Very soon we had over 200 poppies which
were displayed around the pulpit on Remembrance
Sunday.
The war memorial in the churchyard has over 300
names of local residents who gave their lives in the First
and Second World Wars. It is our intention to continue
knitting and crocheting until there is a poppy to
commemorate every one of those lives lost
.
