2011 FSMTA State Concerto Competition Report submitted by Kyung-Ae Gibson, Chair The 2011 Florida State Concerto Competition took place at the FSU College of Music in Tallahassee on May 14. Thirty students from eight districts participated including 17 pianists, 11 string performers and 2 vocalists. Mozart, Vedrai Carino (Don Giovanni) Melodie Dickerson (teacher) Debussy, Nuit d’E tioles Quilter, Love’s Philosophy Enoch Wong, who will be age 16 in June 2011, was born in Tampa, Florida. Currently residing in Orlando, Enoch is a sophomore in the AP program at Timber Creek High School. Enoch speaks English, Cantonese and Mandarin. When Enoch was five years old, he began private piano lessons under Zalina Guverich, and at age eight, Oleg Barsov became Enoch’s teacher. Enoch has won numerous awards starting when he was seven and has had many concert opportunities the past two years. In 2009 he received 1st place in the Central Florida MTA’s Annual Student Competition, won the Irene Muir Honorable Mentions in Concerto, Hymns and Duet in the FFMC, and placed 1st in the Florida State Competition for MTNA and 1st for Piano and 3rd in the overall final round that included vocals, strings, percussion and piano in the Rollins College Bach Festival Society. In 2010, Enoch placed 1st in MTNA’s Southeast Regional Competition, placed 3rd in MTNA’s National Competition, performed a Concerto at the FFMC Award Ceremony, placed 1st in Piano Concerto Junior III-B, received Honorable Mentions for Piano Solo and Piano Hymns, performed in the MTNA Competition Winners Recital, and placed 1st in Piano and 2nd overall in the final round that included vocals, strings, percussion and piano in the Rollins College Bach Festival Society. Enoch is faithfully working to expand his musical talent. He not only plays classical music, but he also plays worship music at Living Stone Community Church. As a devoted Christian, he seeks excellence in Christ. He is passionate about music and enjoys swimming, spending time with friends and family, and basketball. Enoch aspires to major in either Law or Medicine and will minor in Music.
Senior Vocal Concerto Competition Winner Selena Masters Selena Masters, soprano, is a sixteenyear-old Junior attending Lehigh Senior High School in Lehigh Acres, FL. She has nine years of experience in the classical music art form, having professional vocal and instrumental training and many performances in various venues. She has entered and been successful in several vocal competitions at the local, state and national levels. In 2010 she was given the opportunity to attend the Walnut Hill School for the Arts Summer Opera Program near Boston, which included a week of intensive training in the art of vocal and opera performance and culminated in a one-week trip to Italy to experience opera and other classical art culture. In 2009 she was the State Winner of the FSMTA Junior Concerto Competition for Voice. For five consecutive years, she has been a State Winner for Art Song and Musical Theater at the NFMC Junior Convention. Her goal is to continue to improve on her existing talents and to pursue her dream of becoming an opera singer. Senior Strings Concerto Competition Winner Queenie Edwards Queenie Edwards, is an active violinist and chamber musician. Her principal teacher has been Yan Jiang Lu for the last eleven years. She has won several awards for her performances, including twice winning the FSMTA State-wide String Concerto competition. She also was the winner of the 2006 and 2009 Mid-State MTA scholarship competitions. In 2008 she earned 2nd place in the Junior Strings Division of the Florida Orchestra Young Artist Competition. Her most memorable accomplishment was winning the Imperial Symphony Orchestra competition and performing as a soloist with the orchestra. She has three times been associate concertmistress for the FMEA All-State Orchestra. At the 2010 FFMC Junior Convention, she won the Violin Solo Performance and was nominated for the Irene Muir Award. Queenie has been playing music with the Tampa Bay Patel Conservatory since she was ten years old and currently is the concertmistress for the Patel Conservatory Youth Orchestra (PCYO). In 2007, the PCYO performed at Carnegie Hall. This past summer, she was named the 2010 Florida recipient of the Emerson Scholarship from Interlochen Arts Camp and performed in the World Youth Symphony Orchestra with two-time Grammy-Nominated violinist Philippe Quint and Avery Fisher Prize winning clarinetist David Shifrin. Page 11 Junior Piano Concerto Competition Winner Nadia Azzi Nadia Azzi, is 12 years old and a 7th-grade student at The Center for the Gifted Studies Magnet Program housed at Dunedin Highland Middle School in Dunedin, FL. She began playing the piano at the age of five with Kinuyo Engelbrecht who is now teaching her music theory. Her current teacher is the renowned international pianist Leonidas Lipovetsky, and she receives additional tutelage from Dr. Grigorios Zamparas, a concert pianist and professor at the University of Tampa. She has won numerous piano and music competitions at the county, district, state, national, and international levels. Some of her most recent achievements include being the winner in the Early Music Open Junior Category at the 2011 Walgreens National Concerto Competition held in Fort Sheridan, IL; 1st place winner in the piano category at the 2010 Orfeo International Music Competition held in Vipiteno, Italy; Gold Medalist at the 2010 Passion of Music International Music Festival; has performed at the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in NY; received the 2010 Ruth B. Lockmiller Memorial Award at FFMC; nominated for Irene Muir Memorial Award at FFMC; and numerous other awards/scholarships at FFMC and FSMTA piano competitions. In the past, she also had the honor of studying with Dr. Rita Fandrich of Florida Southern College and had the opportunity of attending the 2010 Orfeo Music Summer Festival in Italy studying under Vladimir Khokhlov. She will make her orchestral debut in Cambridge, MA with the Boston Neo-Politan Orchestra in June of 2011 and will attend the Aspen Music Festival and School this summer studying under Yoheved Kaplinsky of the Juilliard School. Nadia also studies violin with Lei Liu, Second Assistant Concert Master of the Florida Orchestra. She became the concert master in the 2009-2010 All-County Middle School Orchestra as well as the advanced orchestra at her middle school. Besides her music interests, she has excelled at many area of studies. She has won several awards such as the 2010 MathMovesU Middle School Scholarship and Grant Program sponsored by the Raytheon Company; 2009 Math P.R.I.D.E Award; and Award of Excellence in Odysseys and Expeditions at the Arts Center in St. Petersburg, FL. She is fluent in Japanese and English. She has attended Japanese pre-schools and elementary schools for 2 months almost every summer since she was 3 years old. She received a bronze award in the 2009 Fukui Prefecture Japanese Calligraphy Competition.
