FSMT Foundation Former Executive Director Remembered
by Paulette Kilts, FSMTF President
The Florida State Music Teachers Foundation Executive Board and FSMTA
members extend their heartfelt sympathy to past-President Sue Bentley
Colvert on the death of her beloved husband, Jim.
Rev. Dr. James W. Colvert, Sr. passed away on Friday, July 22, 2011. Jim
faithfully served the Florida State Music Teachers Foundation as it’s only
Executive Director from 1985-1997. During this time he provided
leadership by developing policy guidelines for awards and their
endowments, recommending updates to the Bylaws of the Foundation,
seeking donors, giving guidance on investment of the corpus and
promoting the work of the Foundation.
I remember the sincerity he displayed when presenting the Community
Service Awards to student winners at State Conferences as Foundation
Executive Director. He believed that the Foundation awards should be
endowed so that the interest from the corpus could support the awards.
He promoted providing awards which represented the dedicated work of
our talented young musicians. He also diligently reminded the Executive
Board members to make their annual donation to the Foundation.
We are also grateful for the Sue Bentley Colvert Young Artist Piano
performance endowment. This enables the Foundation to present an
award of $500 to the winner of the Florida segment of the MTNA Young
Artist Piano competition. Annually a donation is received from the
students of Sue Colvert and their families towards this award so that the
corpus can remain stable and earning interest. If you are interested in
making a contribution to the Foundation or endowing an award, please
contact me. At this time, donation checks are to be sent to my address
found on the back page of this newsletter.
