Intermediate Strings Concerto<br />
Competition Winner<br />
Michael Helvey<br />
Michael Helvey, is a 14-year-old 9th<br />
grader who is home schooled by his<br />
parents. His violin studies began with<br />
Betsy Wade Masterson at the age of 6.<br />
He later studied with Helen Kirklin and is<br />
currently a student of Dr. Janna Lower.<br />
He has won numerous awards in<br />
violin including winning the <strong>FSMTA</strong> District<br />
III Concerto Competition for strings in<br />
2008, honorable mention in 2010, and winning again in 2011.<br />
He was the winner of the <strong>FSMTA</strong> <strong>State</strong> Concerto Competition for<br />
strings in 2008. He was also the winner of the Betsy Schnell<br />
Youth Award and the winner of the Virginia Clayton Summer<br />
Study Award in 2008. This year he was the <strong>Florida</strong> Junior Strings<br />
winner of the 2010-11 MTNA <strong>State</strong> Competition where he then<br />
went on to compete in the MTNA Southern Division Regional<br />
Competition in Columbus, Georgia, receiving an honorable<br />
mention. Michael was the 2011 David Hubbell Concerto<br />
Competition winner which gave him the privilege of being the<br />
featured soloist at the Alachua County Youth Orchestra's Spring<br />
Concert. He has been invited to perform in many recitals<br />
including the FPM Stellar Student Recital in 2009 and 2010.<br />
In addition to the violin, he is also an accomplished pianist<br />
who studies with Wanda Louie. He has received Honors at<br />
Student Day in 2007-2011 and was selected for the Student Day<br />
Honors Recital in 2007-2009. Michael has also participated in<br />
the FFMC <strong>State</strong> Competition where he was named state winner<br />
in piano solo in 2008 and received honorable mention in piano<br />
solo in 2009.<br />
Michael enjoys chamber music and had many performances<br />
with the Alba Trio as the violinist including performing in the<br />
Marion County Chamber Music Concert Series in 2009 and<br />
Spotlight on Youth. He has been a member of the Alachua<br />
County Youth Orchestra for 2 years. Michael hopes to pursue<br />
music in college.<br />
Junior Strings Concerto Competition Winner<br />
Julia Lee<br />
Julia Lee, is in the 5th grade at Lawton Chiles Elementary School. She started playing cello at the age of six<br />
with Mr. Muschlechtner and currently studies with Dr. Steven Thomas and Dr. Chungsun Kim. Julia was declared<br />
state winner in both cello solo and concerto in 2008 and 2009 and in cello solo in 2010 at the FFMC state<br />
competition in Jacksonville. She had her first recital in December 2009, performing Allegro Appassionato by<br />
Saint-Saëns, the Mozart Piano Trio and the Monn Cello Concerto with a Chamber Orchestra of UF Music Students. She was inspired by<br />
Jaqueline du Pré’s performances, but Mstislav Rostropovich is her favorite cellist. Her biggest dream is to play the Elgar concerto<br />
someday in the near future. Julia also loves to play chamber music with her Alba Piano Trio and especially with her sister (flutist) and<br />
her mother (pianist).<br />

Jonathan<br />
Reichenberger<br />
Jonathan Reichenberger, is 10 years<br />
old and in the fourth grade. He has been<br />
playing the piano for more than five years.<br />
Since 2006, Jonathan has received many<br />
local and state awards and honors in<br />
FFMC and <strong>FSMTA</strong> in piano. In 2008 he<br />
was the first-place winner in the piano solo,<br />
duet and hymn events. In the last two years,<br />
he was a first-place winner in piano solo,<br />
concerto, duet, patriotic and hymn events. Jonathan was<br />
nominated for the Irene Muir award in the piano concerto event<br />
at FFMC in 2009 and 2010. Jonathan studies piano and music<br />
theory with Maria Gomez.<br />
In the Pompano Beach Children in the Arts Piano<br />
Competition, Jonathan won first place consecutively in the<br />
Elementary II, Elementary III and Intermediate I division in 2008,<br />
2009 and 2010 respectively. In March 2009, he was a firstplace<br />
winner in the <strong>FSMTA</strong> district concerto competition in the<br />
Elementary division. The following year, Jonathan was the firstplace<br />
winner in the <strong>FSMTA</strong> <strong>State</strong> Concerto competition in the<br />
Junior division. He has performed on WXEL radio and appeared<br />
on WLRN-TV’s American Ideal program with his brother. In<br />
October 2009 Jonathan performed with the Symphony of the<br />
Americas at Parker’s Playhouse in Fort Lauderdale for the SEAS<br />
Program. In January 2011 he performed at the Broward Center<br />
for the Performing Arts with the Symphony of the Americas for<br />
the same program.<br />
Jonathan plays on the AAA <strong>Florida</strong> Jr. Panther’s travel ice<br />
hockey team. His favorite subjects are math and reading. He<br />
enjoys playing tennis, golf and street hockey with his brother.
