Intermediate Strings Concerto Competition Winner Michael Helvey Michael Helvey, is a 14-year-old 9th grader who is home schooled by his parents. His violin studies began with Betsy Wade Masterson at the age of 6. He later studied with Helen Kirklin and is currently a student of Dr. Janna Lower. He has won numerous awards in violin including winning the FSMTA District III Concerto Competition for strings in 2008, honorable mention in 2010, and winning again in 2011. He was the winner of the FSMTA State Concerto Competition for strings in 2008. He was also the winner of the Betsy Schnell Youth Award and the winner of the Virginia Clayton Summer Study Award in 2008. This year he was the Florida Junior Strings winner of the 2010-11 MTNA State Competition where he then went on to compete in the MTNA Southern Division Regional Competition in Columbus, Georgia, receiving an honorable mention. Michael was the 2011 David Hubbell Concerto Competition winner which gave him the privilege of being the featured soloist at the Alachua County Youth Orchestra's Spring Concert. He has been invited to perform in many recitals including the FPM Stellar Student Recital in 2009 and 2010. In addition to the violin, he is also an accomplished pianist who studies with Wanda Louie. He has received Honors at Student Day in 2007-2011 and was selected for the Student Day Honors Recital in 2007-2009. Michael has also participated in the FFMC State Competition where he was named state winner in piano solo in 2008 and received honorable mention in piano solo in 2009. Michael enjoys chamber music and had many performances with the Alba Trio as the violinist including performing in the Marion County Chamber Music Concert Series in 2009 and Spotlight on Youth. He has been a member of the Alachua County Youth Orchestra for 2 years. Michael hopes to pursue music in college. Junior Strings Concerto Competition Winner Julia Lee Julia Lee, is in the 5th grade at Lawton Chiles Elementary School. She started playing cello at the age of six with Mr. Muschlechtner and currently studies with Dr. Steven Thomas and Dr. Chungsun Kim. Julia was declared state winner in both cello solo and concerto in 2008 and 2009 and in cello solo in 2010 at the FFMC state competition in Jacksonville. She had her first recital in December 2009, performing Allegro Appassionato by Saint-Saëns, the Mozart Piano Trio and the Monn Cello Concerto with a Chamber Orchestra of UF Music Students. She was inspired by Jaqueline du Pré’s performances, but Mstislav Rostropovich is her favorite cellist. Her biggest dream is to play the Elgar concerto someday in the near future. Julia also loves to play chamber music with her Alba Piano Trio and especially with her sister (flutist) and her mother (pianist). Page 12 Intermediate Piano Concerto Competition Winner Jonathan Reichenberger Jonathan Reichenberger, is 10 years old and in the fourth grade. He has been playing the piano for more than five years. Since 2006, Jonathan has received many local and state awards and honors in FFMC and FSMTA in piano. In 2008 he was the first-place winner in the piano solo, duet and hymn events. In the last two years, he was a first-place winner in piano solo, concerto, duet, patriotic and hymn events. Jonathan was nominated for the Irene Muir award in the piano concerto event at FFMC in 2009 and 2010. Jonathan studies piano and music theory with Maria Gomez. In the Pompano Beach Children in the Arts Piano Competition, Jonathan won first place consecutively in the Elementary II, Elementary III and Intermediate I division in 2008, 2009 and 2010 respectively. In March 2009, he was a firstplace winner in the FSMTA district concerto competition in the Elementary division. The following year, Jonathan was the firstplace winner in the FSMTA State Concerto competition in the Junior division. He has performed on WXEL radio and appeared on WLRN-TV’s American Ideal program with his brother. In October 2009 Jonathan performed with the Symphony of the Americas at Parker’s Playhouse in Fort Lauderdale for the SEAS Program. In January 2011 he performed at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts with the Symphony of the Americas for the same program. Jonathan plays on the AAA Florida Jr. Panther’s travel ice hockey team. His favorite subjects are math and reading. He enjoys playing tennis, golf and street hockey with his brother.

On May 7th 15 seniors received their $100 Award and 2 seniors received Honorable Mention. This is our way of showing appreciation for the student’s perseverance and their parent’s commitment to the study of music during the demanding years of high school. The students gave an outstanding recital at The Music Gallery for family and friends. Each teacher presented the award to her/his student. The students who participated are as follows: Charity Henry, student of Dr. Linda Pointer, Robin Zander, Jeffrey Marsar and Casey Wilkinson, students of Talia Dillahey, Caroline Leibrecht, student of Carol Alexander, Courtney Grace, student of Eva Hackett, Michaela Zupco, student of Ivanka Stefanov, Ivana Lam and James Tian, students of Kinuyo Engelbrecht, Zachary Carr, student of Stella Gaukshteyn, Victoria Perenich, student of Angela Baptiste & Karen Pasquarello, Ashley Larame and Kaitlin Stumpf, students of Angela Baptiste, Ambika Anand, student of Karen Pasquarello, and Nicholas James, student of Beverly Cross.
